Hi Jennie,

Attached is a file containing half of the issues so

far - I've got the other 3 around here somewhere.

Couldn't find them today, but I did find some other

things I've been wondering where they were. So it

goes - I have a lousy filing system.

If I find the other issues will send along the rest

of it.

This is only a partial index - concentrating mainly

on the road articles. Which take up most of the

issues anyway.

Have a great week coming.

I have a small photo album purchased at the Goodwill of a road trip in the

1930s. One of the photos is of a woman holding a string of fish in front of

a store in Oklahoma called "Twin Bridge Grocery" and it looks like a log

structure. Anyone know where it might be? The trip took them through New

Mexico and Arizona and on to California. Thanks for your help. Jill

I took a stab in the dark with some Google searches. I would surmise

this was a grocery near the two bridges on the Verdigris River on

Route 66, several miles northeast from the outskirts of Tulsa. The

bridges, which were built in 1936 and are still standing, were often

referred to as the Twin Bridges. Given that this photograph came from

a trip that went through New Mexico, California, Arizona and

Oklahoma, it seems fairly likely it was taken on Route 66.

There also is a Twin Bridges State Park close to that area, but I

doubt it dates back to that time period.

If you can scan and post the photo on the "Photos" section of this

group, it might help us narrow it down. Plus, I'm curious.

Hope this helps. If anyone else has info that's more concrete, chime

in.

Good photo. The gravity feed gas pumps definitely put the photo in

the 1930s, maybe early 1940s. The rock foundation of the building

also would more likely put it in northeastern Oklahoma, also.

I was planning to go up to Las Vegas (7/6) today but I have

disappointed that I will not have a photo going over

Greetings, All:

I hope this short post finds you all well. I write for two reasons.

First, to the list member who finds it difficult to locate AMERICAN ROAD on=

their bookstore shelves. AMERICAN ROAD is currently available through the

large chains of Barnes & Noble, Hastings, Books-A-Million, and a number of =

others that Rebecca Repp, our General Manager, can list for you.

Furthermore, AMERICAN ROAD is also available through the largest internet

magazine seller--MagazineCity.com. Distribution of our magazine is handled =

by Prestige Periodicals, based in New York. They do not provide us with

listings of each individual bookstore that carries AMERICAN ROAD. Most of

the larger chains do not provide us with a list that indicates which of the=

ir

outlets carry our magazine either; however, Barnes & Noble is a happy

exception to this rule. Again, if you contact Rebecca at

becky@mockturtlepress.com, she can help you.

I respectfully ask that you would also send Rebecca the names of the

bookstores you have visited that tell you they have never heard of AMERICAN=

Barnes/Noble bookstores in Boulder,CO and Rogers,AR. Plus some local bookstores

and libraries in Longmomt,CO and Roger,AR area. They donot have it on the

shelves.

GEORGE

ROAD. Our magazine was recently cited as one of the most notable

magazines launched in 2003. Our distributor, as I've mentioned, works on an=

international scale. We are available in Canada, France, Australia, and Ne=

w

Zealand, as well as the good, ol' US of A. ANY bookstore can find our

magazine through the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) system.

Our number is 1542-4316. If you have encountered an individual unwilling to=

check the standard system, please let us know. We will pass this informatio=

n

along to our distributor to enlighten them.

Second matter: Although I do not find the time to post to this list as much=

as I

would prefer, I do read its messages every day. Over the last several days,=

I

have seen dialogue mire its wheels in the Route 66 re-certification debate,=

and I want it known that AMERICAN ROAD supports Pat and Jennifer Bremer

fully in their decision to pull the plug on that topic.

As to the magazine's official standing on this debate, I declare that the

magazine, at present, does not officially have a standing. While I do confe=

ss

strong personal convictions, I have not discussed this matter with Dan

Marriott, members of the National Scenic Byways Program, and any number

of others whose opinions this magazine values. The arguments of some in

our illustrious ranks—Jim Ross, Michael Wallis, etc.—are duly noted, and to=

be honest, they make good sense to me. But to be fair—as we have not

talked with all the "usual suspects" at this point—I do not believe it appr=

opriate

for AMERICAN ROAD to take an official stand at this time.

I wish you all a happy Fourth of July. I hope, by Tuesday, I will be readin=

g

about some great road trips on this list.

This is a list of just the major things less than 100 miles from SA. With

all of them, you can take one route out and a different way back.

With the exception of Austin, they are all "small town" and are scenic

drives.

With exception of the last two, they are places that people come from all of

the world to visit.

Austin, of course is the state captital. Johnson City was the home of LBJ

and stonewall is the home of the LBJ Ranch.

During that period, a lot of the communities will be having Festivals.

We lived in Fredericksburg for 19 years, so if you have any questions about

the area, let me know. I will be happy to help you out.

mistyowl@hotmail.com

Are you more interested in scenic drives, history, local flavor, or getting

away from the crowds? Are you interested in tourists areas or avoiding

tourist hangouts. Do you like to shop or take photos?

Each of these are easy one-day "drives" as long as you don't want to make

any stops to check out the area. Each stop will probably cost you half a

day if you rush.

I am assuming you are planning on staying 2-3 weeks. You can spend a week in

just SA.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for your e-mail and with such wonderful news on your plans. I am

forwarding this on to both Kathie at The Aztec Hotel as well as a few of my

other friends that will be interested in this information. You will find

that the people that are involved with Route 66 want very much to share

their love, passion and knowledge with others. You now will have many folks

to use as resources and each of them welcomes the opportunity to assist you.

Check out our web site and use the 'links' page to find other sources and

I know the area of which you are referring to and applaud your efforts to

preserve and restore a motor hotel there. I will thank Adriene next time I

see her for passing on to you my contact information to you. If there is

anything else that you might need please let me know.

HI--I don't have Kathy's e-mail address, but Adriene Biondo of the LA

Conservancy Modern Committee, suggested that I contact her:

I am early in the stages of trying to save one of the many motor hotels in

NW Chicago's former Hwy 41. This used to be the main route into the city

from the northwest. But since the Interstate was built in the 60's, the many

motels on North Lincoln avenue have fallen on hard times. The area has

become more residential, and all the motels have become fairly synonomous

with drugs and prostitution. So the community is intent on demolishing all

the motor hotels.............

Right now, I am trying to learn all the history and politics of the area. I

finally found one nice and friendly motel owner who would talk to me. I am

hoping to analyze his costs, project my own, and see if I could viably

renovate the place back to the 60's again, attract actual tourists, and make

a living. Then, I will try to do a PR campaign to get city and community

support.

Any great stories and/or resources to offer?!

Thanks very much,

Thanks so much for the comprehensive listing. This group is

wonderful! Actually, I'm only going down for a long weekend, so I'm

just looking to fit in a day trip. To answer your questions, I'm

more about scenic, desolate drives with small towns. I would also be

looking for a good diner on a highway that's not touristy. Any recs

are appreciated. I'll probably work in the Riverwalk, but leave the

rest of SA for another time. I'm actually going down there to see if

I might want to transfer to one of my company's operations centers

down there. Off to check out the links you sent...

Thanks again,

Morning

I was planning to go up to Las Vegas (7/6) today but I have

discovered that the spokes on the wheels are drying

out quickly and I have 2 wheels that are very loose.

I have no idea how long they will last so I am forced

disappointed that I will not have a photo going over

I have not been able to get access at the libraries as

often as I thought. Holidays also confuse it. [brian is Canadian, I don't

I have to go on the I-state more often. [brian told me that the rumble strips

on the interstate really shake the tires. helen] 42 days

today. Don't want it to end. Car not overheating at

We've passed that suggestion on to Brian, we've also been told that

he'd soaked the wheels for a good half year, prior to his trip. His

trip is showing just hard it was for some to get to the "promised

Friends of Cadillac Ranch celebrate 30th birthday

By JIM McBRIDE

They couldn't have timed it better.

Tom and Bev Simpson were cruising down Interstate 40 headed

for Iowa. Then they spotted it.

"We saw it going by, made a U-turn and went back, drove up. We

had no idea it was a party, the 30th anniversary or anything," Tom

Simpson said. "I just said, 'Hey look, Cadillac Ranch. Do you

want to stop? I dunno. Do you? Let's stop.' And we stopped."

Hi everyone. I see that a few of you have had a bit of trouble finding

AMERICAN ROAD in various Barnes & Noble Stores. AMERICAN ROAD is

carried in approximately 100 Barnes & Noble Stores across the US. I can look

them up by state. It looks as if Rich was looking in the state of NY. Here is

the

address listing of B&N stores in NY that carry AMERICAN ROAD:

-20 Wolf Road; Colonie, NY

-Country Glen S C 91 Old Country Road, Carle Place, NY

-1972 Broadway, NY, NY

-821 Country Rd 64, Elmira NY 14901

-495 South Road, Pughkeepsie, NY

-3454 Erie Blvd East Syracuse, NY

-842 Sunrise Highway, Bayshore, NY 11706

-122 Fifth Ave. 4th Flr, NY, NY

The distributor also included three other stores in the NY area:

-Global Ink Inc., 2876 Broadway, NY, NY

-Shaker News @ 724 Loudon Rd, Lantham NY

-Fairview Books 160 Fairview Ave, Hudson, NY

I also include below a listing of Barnes & Noble stores in California for the

individual in Calif. seeking an issue of AMERICAN ROAD:

-Market Square 1725 Arden Way, Sacramento CA

-1600 Gateway Blvd, Fairfield, CA

-3485 Tyler St, Riverside, CA

-1440 Bear Valley Rd #107, Victorville, CA

-6050 El Cerrito Plaza, El Cerrito, CA

-11090 Foothill Blvd, Rancho Cucamonga

--40570 Winchester Rd, Temecula CA

The other shop that is listed in California is Fog City News at 455 Market St,

Ste 125, San Francisco, CA 94105

Colorado & Arkansas stores are listed below:

-Hastings: Conway Town Center #04, 1360 W Old Morrilton Hwy, Conway AR

-Hastings: Jacksonville Plaza Ctr., 915 W Main Jacksonville, AR

-Hastings: Military Plaza 1203 Military Rd, Benton, AR

--Hastings: Festa Square S/C 2999 North College Ave, Fayetteville AR

--Hastings: 1315 S Caraway Plaza, Jonesboro AR

--3051 East Main, Russelville AR

--Hastings, 105 North Poplar, Searcy AR

--Hastings: 6800 Rogers #A, Ft Smith, AR

--Hastings: 950 Highway 62 East Mountain Home, AR

--Hastings: 2340 Harrison St, Batesville, AR

--Hastings: 2400 West Sunset, Springdale, AR

Colorado:

--B&N: 4045 S College Ave, Fort Collins, CO

--B&N: 2451 Patterson Rd, Grand Junction, CO

--Hastings: 2401 North Ave, Grand Junction CO

--Hastings 2201-D S. Townsend Ave, Montrose, CO 81401

--Hastings: 3015 23rd Ave, Greely CO 80631

This information is taken from a list that was sent to me by our distributor

when

the Spring issue mailed. They only receive a list from the wholesaler that

stocks for Barnes & Noble & Hastings stores. I also left a message with our

representative to inquire as to why the Barnes & Noble stores are not being

more helpful to customers making an inquiry about AMERICAN ROAD. I hope

to learn more about that tomorrow.

In the meantime, I recommend that if you are in a shop that does not stock

AMERICAN ROAD that you request that start carrying it. If they are not familiar

with AMERICAN ROAD let them know it was in the Top 30 New Magazines

(out of 948 new publications) that came out last year. Incidently, since there

were 948 new magazines last year it might explain why the sales clerks are

not familiar with every title! One note, I have heard from some folks that

newsstands, in particular, are generally very happy to learn about new titles

and order them for their customers.

Feel free to give a store representative needing information about stocking

AMERICAN ROAD my phone number--206-369-5782 and I will direct them

down the appropriate path. You can give them the ISSN# 1542-4316 and/or

the Bar Code/UPC information is: 0-74470-57928-1 to facilitate them looking

up the information in the database system. Alternatively, you may give them

the number for Prestige Periodicals--914-684-2317.

Please e-mail me directly at becky@mockturtlepress.com if you are trying to

find AMERICAN ROAD at a B&N or Hastings store in your state--as I check my

e-mail quite frequently. I am happy to look up that information.

Two other points also should be mentioned. You may want to check your local

library to learn if they carry a subscription to AMERICAN ROAD. If they do not,

they often will act upon requests from their clients. And, finally, if you are

striking out on all fronts, or even if you are not, you may order a single copy

from us.

I hope that the information in this message is helpful.

Have a great evening!

they have run out of stock. Please e-mail me at becky@mockturtlepress.com

to let me know--I want to make sure you get a copy of the current issue, one

way or another!

Hey it's me again,

Some of the links to newspapers want you to

register first before you have access to their

articles. This is a relatively benign process,

and I encourage you to do so. I have registered

with over 50 newspaper web-sites and have not

received one spam!

A real "Roadside Museum" to commemorate the

From around the world to Lancaster County.

The elite among chefs - those who work for heads

of state - got a crash course in, and full bellies from,

Pennsylvania Dutch farm-based cooking. Among

the fare: Stuffed hog's stomach and dandelion

salad. This included a meal prepared by the

famous Miller's Smorgasbord, an ages old LH

favorite:

For information on the Landis Valley Museum,

2451 Kissel Hill Rd., Lancaster, visit

The "World Leaders' Favorites," recipes shared by

the visiting chefs in the kitchens of the Willard

You probably know about MapQuest and Yahoo

Maps but there's a new kid on the block that may

just take over - Map24:

http://www.us.map24.com/

The map is interactive and dynamic and will find

and locate 60 categories from airports, motels,

restaurants to zoos. I have high speed cable and

it takes about 40 seconds to load so dial-uppers

please be patient.

Try this - at the first screen put it your address

and click next - wait for the map to load - then

click the details button - the window will extend -

then click the down arrow for category and select

one, say restaurants - then click the next button -

the map redisplays a numbered list of 10

restaurants in distance away from your starting

address - the table on the left lists the numbered

restaurants - click on the number in the table and

the map re-centers on that place - click the restaurant

name and you get the address and phone - is this

cool or what??!! The restaurant list also seems more

up to date than Yahoo Yellow Pages.

The map has other features I'm still trying to figure

out but looks very promising. One thing - the map

moves in any direction you click off center. Give it

try - you must have java script enabled in your

browser.

Yes, it is a neat looking restaurant and a bit of time travel with

the chrome table legs and black and white checkered floor. Also like

the horseshoe-shaped counters as you walk through the door and the

friendliness of the staff. Navigator did get the B.L.T. and said it

was okay. She also said that the bathroom was disgusting. That did

it for her. Once again I forgot to throw in a camera so no pics.

Bliss, Ron, etc.,

If you're out west, mostly in California with a few places in Arizona and

Nevada, have a burger, fries and shake or Coke at an In-N-Out Burger. In fact,

that's all you can have as that's all they sell. They go to great lengths to

let folks know that they cut their own potatoes, leaf their own lettuce, slice

their own onions and tomatoes, and it's all done on site, in sight of the

customers. They also advertise that there are no microwaves or steam tables to

be found in any of their restaurants.

They just moved into Arizona a couple of years ago, having been in California

for the previous 50 or so years.

Check out their web site at http://www.in-n-out.com/.. You see people wearing

their t-shirts all over this part of the country.

The Cozy Dog in Springfield, Ill., does. I've seen 'em. Yet another reason to

visit there during the Route 66 festival next week.

Here?s a thought from my boss, David F. Halaas, Ph.D., Museum Division

Director, Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center, who

coordinated a L&C exhibit we have here.

Brian Butko

?I?m sure the Montana Visitors? Bureau or any state visitor bureau along the

route would have plenty of photos. The L&C expedition is big business out

West, but especially in Montana and Idaho.?
