Hi (and hopefully on the right day and time)...

The Road Trip show on the travel channel was fun! The duo cruised from Orlando

to Key West, stopping at King Solomans castle in Ona (very eclectic place), a

"fountain of youth" then down 41, offroading to Captiva Island, then on to

Naples, Ochobee (site of a post office the size of a postage stamp) across the

everglades to Miami, South Beach and on to Key West!...the car du jour is a

Mustang reminiscent of the ones the wife and I took on trips to Key West and on

our 01 trip to Gallup, which made us shed a tear...the hosts are a bit "perky"

but its still a fun way to spend an hour...

Next week, however, should pique some attention: They start in Las Vegas, then

on to ROUTE 66 and a cruise from (it looks like) Kingman to LA...Tuesday 9 ct,

10 et, 7 pt, 8 mt, 11 at on the Travel Channel

A sad article on today's issues, but check out the vintage photo of

the gas prices at the 1950's Mobilgas Station and the Sears lot

full of beautiful old (new) cars!!! . . . Chris

(may require an easy subscription)

O price in America is more visible, indeed inescapable, than that

of gasoline. And Americans don't like the numbers they're seeing

today, and their anger has turned high prices at the pump into

highly flammable political fodder. OPEC's decision last week to

cut production has further fueled the fire.

Greetings and Happy Easter to one & all! Has it already been 6 1/2

months since this list was created? My, how time certainly flies.

We're currently at 99 members, and we haven't even had the first

issue in our hands! Some of you may have forgot, but the reason we're

here is because of AMERICAN ROAD magazine. So with that in mind, I'm

here to inform you the first issue has gone to press and will begin

its journey through the US Postal Service on April 28! For a sneak-

peak at the cover of Numero Uno, check out our updated Yahoo Groups

page at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AMERICAN_ROAD/ I'm sure most

of you have already subscribed, but if not, it's not too late to get

that first issue in your mailbox. Info for subscribing is as follows:

To subscribe to AMERICAN ROAD magazine, PHONE TOLL-FREE 1-877-285-

5434 WITH YOUR ORDER TODAY!

Or send payment to: Mock Turtle Press, PO Box 3168, Lynnwood, WA

98046-3168

SUBSCRIPTION RATES:

1 year (4 issues) for $15.95

(save $3.85 off the newsstand price!)

2 years (8 issues) for $27.95

(save $11.65 off the newsstand price!)

Some of you have mentioned to us in the past about the lack

of "traffic" (i.e., messages) in our list. This is to be expected

since there hasn't been an issue circulating. However, I fully expect

membership in our group to combust next month when the first issue

hits the public. And with increased membership we'll also see more

stories, news, and facts hit the list. Hang in there...it'll be worth

it!

able to > see it as I live in Indiana? >> Ed

Hey Ed,

Thank you for your inquiry about "BUILT FOR SPEED: The Coral Court Motel."

Our documentary currently being shown on local TV, includes an interview

with Bill Boll and myself, which extends the program to 90 minutes long. The

documentary will air a few more times this month, so it is possible that we

can record it and maybe make "bootleg" copies for those who simply MUST have

a copy.

A few folks have already asked me about doing this, so I am compiling a

SHORT list of names, addresses. There would be a fee for the cost of the

tape, shipping, etc.

The CCM program will also be making the rounds at film festivals around the

country throughout the year. Thanks for your interest.

Well I got mine on Saturday, and the only thing I am disappointed about is

the *#&$@&!@!!! USPS delivered it soaking wet, then dried, then wadded into a

pulp, then crammed into my little 2"x3" community metal mailbox... the first

20 pages are all stuck together and unreadable !!!!

GGGRRRRR!!!!!

Still waiting in New England - but we ARE at the end

of the delivery road. I think the postal service is

still using horses up this way. Same thing with the

Hudson auto club publication I get - the standing joke

in the club is, when I get my copy, I let the editor

know. Then he knows everybody else has theirs. LOL

Good things come to those who wait!!

I was getting worried. I joined the group and it went dead for over a

day. I thought it might be my fault but I'm now guessing everyone was

out watching their mailboxes. What a great looking magazine.

I've made it through the messages (maybe not EVERY word) and looked

at some pictures. The two cover pictures in "Yahoo! Album" triggered

a question. Was "egroupcover" used only for announcements &

advertising or...?

In the event that this is the Twin Bridges that's in northeastern OK, I'll

check it out next week when I'm up at Afton Station, which is close to Twin

Bridges State Park in Fairland. It certainly seems possible, since the woman

has

a nice mess 'o fish there, and that's definitely fishing country.

Greetings All!

Have some news. Though it's a bit late, it may be of interest to some

roadies and owners of the Route 66 Postmarkart. I just found out this

morning that the Essex, CA. Post Office has closed it's doors for

good. (Sorry, the Post Office never announces anything timely). That

postmark is history and is now "lost in time". This closing occured

in February of 2002. This makes the second post office closing of

which the post office postmark appears on the artwork. More are sure

to close in the future. Many folks are now realizing just how

historic the artwork is.

The Essex post office still has it's sign and the building still

looks like a post office, but I don't know how long that will last

that way. The building owner could take down all the post office

signs and designation at a moments notice! So, when you travel by

there, be sure to take some pics of the post office building while

you still can.

God Bless and Happy Trails.

As I dig a little deeper into the old photo album I find that you must be

right about the location of Twin Bridge Gorcery since the fish were caught

on the same day as a visit to the Will Rogers Memorial in Claymore, OK. The

trip took place in Sept-Oct 1940. The photos are not in order but many are

dated, others are not. It does appear that the route was on 66. Another

photo in Oklahoma is titled "Just a lunch room" and the building is dressed

up with huge ice cream cones on the roof and (fake, of course) ice sickles

dripping off the sides. Any ideas on this one?

If you are interested in seeing the Hill Country, then here is what I would

recommend. This is the longer, driving route and will get you on the smaller

roads and small towns, but it easy to find. At the most, you are about 2

hours from San Antonio anywhere on the route. If you spent more time than

you planned and needed to cut it short and head back that shouldn't be a

problem.

A couple of words of warning about traveling in the Hill County. If you are

like me and decide to head down some little side road that looks

interesting, but you are not familiar with the area, then when it gets

around 5 pm, you will want to head towards one of the more main roads. This

is ranching country and some of the smaller roads actually go through

private property. There are areas where it is easy to get lost and you might

go 30 min or more and not see another vehicle. Or in some of the areas, if

it is after dark, you might not see anyone until the next morning. Not

really a problem during the daytime, but no fun after dark.

The other word of warning. The area is full of deer and they can dart out

in front of you very quickly. They are worse after 6 pm. There are also a

lot of exotic game ranches in the area, so you might see anything in the

fields along the way. I did have a wild turkey fly into my front grill.

You might want to head out of San Antonio on the NW side on Highway 16.

This will take you through Bandera, Media and up to Kerrville. Allow 2-3

hours from that part. That will allow you time to take photos and other "pit

stops".

In Kerrville, you might want to take a side trip to Ingram. You can keep

going and see if you can find "Stonehedge". That road will take you on to

I-10 or you can go to Crider's. http://www.cridersonthefrio.com/

Or you can continue on north out of Kerrville on Highway 16 into

Fredericksburg. Kerrville to Fredericksburg take about 30 min. In

Fredericksburg, you can take Ranch Road 965 up past Enchanted Rock State

Park. Continue on Ranch Road 965 and you find yourself back to Highway 16.

Turn right/south, and you can head back into Fredericksburg if you are

running out of time or take the Willow City Loop. If you have run out of

time, then take 87 out of Fredericksburg and head down to I-10 or 290 east

to Johnson City, then 291 down through Blanco and on to San Antonio.

Thanks so much for the comprehensive listing. This group is

wonderful! Actually, I'm only going down for a long weekend, so I'm

just looking to fit in a day trip. To answer your questions, I'm

more about scenic, desolate drives with small towns. I would also be

looking for a good diner on a highway that's not touristy. Any recs

are appreciated. I'll probably work in the Riverwalk, but leave the

rest of SA for another time. I'm actually going down there to see if

I might want to transfer to one of my company's operations centers

down there. Off to check out the links you sent...

Thanks again,

pascha

I just spoke to Paul Taylor at Route 66 Magazine. He said that Brian is in

Laughlin, NV, and will be there until sometime on Thursday (7/8). Brian is

soaking his wheels. They plan to do a photo shoot tomorrow morning of Brian

driving into the Colorado River.

Laughlin weather at noon, Wednesday (7/7) is 102 degrees with 11% humidity.

I just got this message from a reporter at the Needles Desert Star. I'd say

that Brian has gotten his money's worth from these wheels. Let's hope they

can go a few more days on Route 66, and then, a few more weeks on Hwy 101, as

Brian completes his trip home to British Columbia.

Once Brian gets to Needles, he's only about 270 miles from the western

terminus of Route 66. That's about 4 hours by modern car or almost 4 days, by

1930

Nash.

Brian called me this morning (7/7) and said he planned to head down to

Needles on Friday (7/9) morning. He will call me when he gets here. He said that

the

heat was rapidly drying out his wooden wheels, which were originally meant to

last only 15 years.

Hello everyone. I had a lengthy discussion with our distributor this morning

about difficulties with getting some Barnes & Noble stores to carry American

Road. Here is what I learned.

The list that they can look up titles that they are authorized to purchase (such

as American Road) is only available to the Magazine Department Manager at

the individual Barnes & Noble store. Not all sales reps have access to the

info. So, our distributor spoke with a Barnes & Noble manager who indicated

that the following steps be taken to get your local Barnes & Noble store to

carry AMERICAN ROAD if they are not on the regular distribution list handled

by the wholesaler:

1) The customer should request that store carry AMERICAN ROAD. It is

advisable that the request be made directly to the B&N store manager. Our

distributor indicated that the customer should indicate that they will regularly

come to that particular store looking for AMERICAN ROAD. Our distributor

assured me that AMERICAN ROAD is on the Barnes & Noble authorized title

list -- so the store Magazine Department Manager (when they receive the

request from the store manager) can order any title off that list based on a

customer request. It is done solely at the manager's discretion. (***If you do

not get results, our distributor said that if I forward the name of the sales

rep/

manager to them--that they would take the information to Barnes & Noble

Corporate. Or, that the customer could complaint to B&N corporate).

2) If the customer is not able to speak with a manager, and the sales rep is

unwiling to make the request of the manager, send (send it to me at

becky@mockturtlepress.com) the City & State information (for larger cities I

would need the address info) for that store I can request that our distributor

try

to arrange for that store to receive AR. This is not the best way to go,

however,

as it would need to go through multiple approval channels & may or may not

result in the store carrying the title.

I hope this is helpful. If we all work together, we can work to get AMERICAN

ROAD to the store nearest you!

Have a super Wednesday!

Should help some I'd imagine. Even better would be

to dump the wooden wheels and replace with wire or

artillery - those would fit the era.

Thanks for the update.

Russ!

No doubt. You'll find them on US 30, US50, US60, US62, US66,...

and list goes on.

Fred!

Thanks for shedding light upon the group. What you've mentioned is

true. From a personal trucker conversation to a road block involved.

Ron!

Historic Scenic Byways are a great idea indeed.

Can't wait until that happens. Sure you agree.

But, why wait to save those two lanes until then.

God Bless. Happy Tracks Soon.

Hi folks,

Just wondering if anyone knew the exact MONTH, DAY for these Route 66 facts

about Kansas. (This is for my upcoming Route 66 calendar.) Thank you kindly.

1929--

The Kansas stretch of Route 66 (13 miles) is completely paved.

1960s--

Kansas is the first state to be completely bypassed by the interstates.

Thanks and best regards,

Hey kids,

Here's one more fact that I wondered if anyone had any more detailed

information about the exact week, that Jack would have made this trip. It's

a real long shot, so I'm not expecting much -- but I had to ask anyway.

Thanks.

Shellee G.

------------

March 1946--

Jack drove his 1939 American Bantam coupe for a "last careful round in March

1946 to check my facts." Jack D. Rittenhouse published the very first "A

Guidebook to Highway 66." This book lists every community from Chicago to

Los Angeles that existed on old Route 66 along with attractions, lodgings.

It's just as wonderful as the premiere issue! Congrats to the staff and

writers for another info-packed edition. Mine arrived this afternoon, so I

haven't had time to read every word yet, but I'm getting there.

Hey again folks

and thanks for reading,

My factoids needed for my 12-month Route 66 calendar is going very well.

I've done scads of research and have had so much fun learning about the

spirits/ghosts in the Hotel Monte Vista AND that Stanley Marsh will give any

homeowner in Amarillo a free sign if they will put it up on their property.

(Makes me wish I lived there!)

Still--after going over all of them--

I am lacking facts in the months of

APRIL, JULY and DECEMBER.

I have 2 from these months, but would like more.

and

I am Lacking in factoids

from the states of:

ILLINOIS, KANSAS & NEW MEXICO.

I know it seems inconceivable that I could be lacking for 3 states, but I

wish to have more than I have now. Any fun dates (or serious ones) would be

most appreciated. I'm just trying to make this Route 66 calendar one that

really has Route 66 information on the days of the week.

Thanks for your interest/assistance.
