I took a picture of the Essex post office on my cross-country bicycle trip

in May 2003. Scroll to the bottom of the following link (you can click on

the photo to see a bigger one):

http://www.targetedsoftware.com/cycling/c2c/photos/0503.html

Note that the photo caption is incorrect since the P.O. closed in Feb. 2002.

Oh, well, it *looked* like it was still operating (I'll fix it soon, now

that I know). Anybody know how long the place next door has been closed? I

don't recall it being open when I drove the route in December 1990, but it

was a Sunday so they may have been closed for the day.

My bike trip basically followed US 80, US 180, US 380, US 60, AZ 260, AZ

89/89A, Route 66, CA 58, CA 41 and CA 46. There are plenty of photos at my

web site (many roadside-oriented), plus a daily journal.

Hi Everybody,

I don't have any info. to share on the Twin Bridges Grocery, but I thought I

would chime in long enough to put some dates on some bridges. The original US66

bridge over the Verdigris at Catoosa was built about 1/4 mile north of the

present 4-lane alignment in 1925. It was replaced in 1936 with the west-bound

bridge on today's 4-lane. The eastbound bridge that now sits next to it wasn't

built until 1957 (it is also 4 feet wider than its "twin"). More details can be

found on page 56 of Oklahoma Route 66.

Hope to see you all in Tulsa!

After all the bad news I've been spreading recently about the

loss of local landmarks, especially the old bridges, it's good to

report some hopeful news. Up on Clinton Highway (US 25W) just north

of Knoxville there's an old abandoned gas station, built in the

1930's in the shape of an airplane. It doesn't look like it's been

used in many years and is beginning to deteriorate. Just another

doomed derelict? Hopefully, not.

A group has been formed calling itself the Airplane Filling

Station Preservation Association with the goal of restoring the

building and perhaps opening a museum there. The building is

salvageable, but it's going to take plenty of time and money to pull

it off. The association is working with Knox Heritage, a local

organization chartered by the state to work on historic projects.

Also, the building has been placed on the National Register of

Historic Places.

I've talked to one of the association members and and he told

me there is going to be a meeting around July 1 that will be open to

the local community. This is considered a community project and

they are looking for local input and support.

They don't have a web page as yet, but they've contacted

someone at UT who is going to create a site for them, perhaps within

the next two weeks. I have encouraged my contact to join our news

group, so perhaps we will be hearing from him directly soon.

I've uploaded three pictures I took of the station last winter

into my photo folder, along with a scanned newspaper photo of the

station as it looked back in the 30's.

I'll be keeping track of developments and passing on news as it

develops.

Good travels to all,

Here's an update on Brian from Bob Moore at Route 66 Magazine in Laughlin,

NV. As you read his assessment of the damage to Brian's car from the hail storm

in Texas, imagine Bob, and the size of his fist!

While his car is soaking in the river, Brian is about town, as a call to his

room at the Edgewater found him out. Best guess is that Brian will stay in

Laughlin again tonight (7/8). Somehow, I doubt that the migrating family that

he's emulating, stayed in a hotel, but in Brian's case, I believe that he's

earned the right!

Great! Thanks so much for the detailed info!

dona <864@msn.com> wrote:If you are interested in seeing the Hill Country, then

here is what I would

recommend. This is the longer, driving route and will get you on the smaller

roads and small towns, but it easy to find. At the most, you are about 2

hours from San Antonio anywhere on the route. If you spent more time than

you planned and needed to cut it short and head back that shouldn't be a

problem.

A couple of words of warning about traveling in the Hill County. If you are

like me and decide to head down some little side road that looks

interesting, but you are not familiar with the area, then when it gets

around 5 pm, you will want to head towards one of the more main roads. This

is ranching country and some of the smaller roads actually go through

private property. There are areas where it is easy to get lost and you might

go 30 min or more and not see another vehicle. Or in some of the areas, if

it is after dark, you might not see anyone until the next morning. Not

really a problem during the daytime, but no fun after dark.

The other word of warning. The area is full of deer and they can dart out

in front of you very quickly. They are worse after 6 pm. There are also a

lot of exotic game ranches in the area, so you might see anything in the

fields along the way. I did have a wild turkey fly into my front grill.

You might want to head out of San Antonio on the NW side on Highway 16.

This will take you through Bandera, Media and up to Kerrville. Allow 2-3

hours from that part. That will allow you time to take photos and other "pit

stops".

In Kerrville, you might want to take a side trip to Ingram. You can keep

going and see if you can find "Stonehedge". That road will take you on to

I-10 or you can go to Crider's. http://www.cridersonthefrio.com/

Or you can continue on north out of Kerrville on Highway 16 into

Fredericksburg. Kerrville to Fredericksburg take about 30 min. In

Fredericksburg, you can take Ranch Road 965 up past Enchanted Rock State

Park. Continue on Ranch Road 965 and you find yourself back to Highway 16.

Turn right/south, and you can head back into Fredericksburg if you are

running out of time or take the Willow City Loop. If you have run out of

time, then take 87 out of Fredericksburg and head down to I-10 or 290 east

to Johnson City, then 291 down through Blanco and on to San Antonio.

Thanks so much for the comprehensive listing. This group is

wonderful! Actually, I'm only going down for a long weekend, so I'm

just looking to fit in a day trip. To answer your questions, I'm

more about scenic, desolate drives with small towns. I would also be

looking for a good diner on a highway that's not touristy. Any recs

are appreciated. I'll probably work in the Riverwalk, but leave the

rest of SA for another time. I'm actually going down there to see if

I might want to transfer to one of my company's operations centers

down there. Off to check out the links you sent...

Thanks again,

I got this message from Mac Dube, a Field Representative for San Bernardino

County 1st. District Supervisor, Bill Postmus. Mac visited the Goffs

Schoolhouse and Cultural Center several times while I was the Open House

Coordinator,

and since Goffs is on Route 66, Mac and the folks at Goffs assume that Brian

will stop there. The Dennis that he refers to is Dennis Casebier, who lives at

Goffs. Mac & Dennis were both Marines, and Mac's a 'car guy.'

I thought that Brian would get a kick out of the 'official' notice of his

trip, I'm just sorry that it's not on the supervisor's letterhead.

I've been wanting to get to Goffs to see you for some time but seems like

Brian's trip report has been updated to show a picture his car in the

Colorado River. I assume that after this beautifully framed picture was taken,

Brian

drove in so that all four wheels were submerged. The picture is courtesy of

No problem ;-)

I had a friend contact me about this one and while she was waiting on my reply,

the company computer techies came in and deleted the file off her computer, so

you are in very good company. There are a lot of computers without their little

A gentleman just joined another group I am on. He has an interesting hobby.

He designs computer generated textured maps. He gets requests from teachers

Guest Shellee Graham

Hello again and happy Sunday,

Kathleen Miller from ILLINOIS helped me realize that I haven't really

explained what I am looking for.

NEEDED: The month, date and year factoids from the PAST -- not the future.

I am looking for when this began, when this thing ended or someone won a

award, someone was born or passed away, OR some structure was placed on the

National Register of Historic Places.

Here?s an example of facts I have for my calendar ------------------------

January 1--

The Hotel Monte Vista opened on New Year’s Day, 1927. This historic hotel,

listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has played host over the

years to celebrities such as John Wayne, Bing Crosby, and Harry Truman.

Other guests include several spirits and ghosts. The old hotel, with its

tales of scandal and ghost stories, continues to entertain.

February 9--

1999: Songwriter/Actor Bobby Troup dies. In 1946 he wrote the classic

American roadsong "Get Your Kicks on Route 66," first recorded by Nat King

Cole.

March 19--

1939: Hollywood stars Clark Gable and Carole Lombard wed in the Route 66

town of Kingman, Arizona, then spent their honeymoon night at the Oatman

Hotel.

April 30--

1926: Highway officials in Missouri & Oklahoma agreed to end their battle

with the governor of Kentucky over the number originally assigned to the

highway from Chicago to Los Angeles. Instead of US 60, they choose one of

the few numbers not yet assigned ?66.?

May 6--

1940: A Pulitzer prize was awarded to John Steinbeck for his novel "The

Grapes of Wrath," which chronicled the fictional Joad family as they

migragted west on Route 66 from Oklahoma to California.

July 22--

1995: Groundbreaking commenced for the Route 66 Elementary School in

Edgewood, New Mexico. It opened the next year at a cost of $11 million, with

unique features such as a neon sign and a cafeteria called Route 66 Diner.

Their mascot is a Route 66 Roadrunner.

December 7 -- (Pearl Harbor Day)

1942: A day that still lives in infamy, December 7 marks the beginning of

World War II for the United States. Car production was halted, while tires

and gasoline were rationed. The state of California became a mecca of war

industry jobs, luring thousands across its borders each day along Route 66.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------

I am still waiting to get the exact DAY on this Illinois factoid...

Mid May 1998--

Nine area entrepreneurs created Route 66 Raceway, a state-of-the-art

1Z4-mile drag strip and 1Z2-mile dirt oval track facility, along the

Route 66 Raceway is a part of the Chicagoland Speedway

Facility. (The Chicagoland Speedway is where they have

NASCAR [That's Stock Car Racing for the gearhead

Besides being a person who would rather take the

Your invited to watch the ReGrand Opening of one of the oldest filling stations

on Route 66. The ceremony takes place during Oldham County Roundup on

Saturday, Aug.14 at about 1:30 pm Central Time. The Magnolia Station was

built in the early 20's and stood ready to serve motorists when Route 66 was

designated in 1926.

The link to this webcast is under the Events tab at route66today.tv. Sometime

next week it will have a link to get the latest Quicktime Player and a link to

get

the webcast live around 1pm. Stop by and enjoy. Better yet, come to the

ceremony in person and dine at the free BBQ.

In fact, that's all you can have as that's all they sell. They go to great

Sorry about that...Quinn and I thought the Route 66 diner in Gallup was

pretty good...as far as French Fries go, however, Dan's in Davenport and the

Cozy Dog take the cake--new category: best Calzone (outside of Chicago) that

I have had is at the Launching Pad in Wilmington...Tsingtao, Kip

Great travelog, traveldog? The site ran over it's data transfer limit

at page 11 or so. I have the same prob with my geocities world.

I'll go back later and pick up where I left off.

Wow! Extensive website, and Lady writes very well. She is very

knowledgeable about all the sites she and her driver visited.

Wish my cats would do the travelogue while I drive!

On July 25 I was returning from a road trip to San Saba, Texas to visit the

newly reopened Corral Drive-in Theater (different story), anyway -- on the

return trip I was driving up Hwy 16 between San Saba and Goldthwaite and

spotted this house:

http://www.worley-world.com/ww_images/hwy16house.jpg

I'm not sure what you call this style, but it sure appeared to be a gas

station at one time, just like the famous Lucille Hamons' place on Route 66

in Hydro, OK. I haven't seen another like this, except the private residence

on Route 66 near Bridgeport, OK.

I stopped to explore, found some old empty quart oil cans (the kind you stab

a spout into) and various old car parts in the storage shed, a basement under

the kitchen, and the upstairs gutted. There was nothing in the house, in

fact the place is about to fall down.

Now here is the strange part: When I was coming out of the basement, I

heard distinct voices - a man and woman talking. They sounded like they were

in the kitchen above. I was sure someone was coming to run me off. But

there are no houses that close by. I looked out the back and saw nothing. I

went out the front, walked around both sides, still nothing. There is not

another house, not even another car within 600 yards. Oh well... voices of

the past, perhaps. I stayed a while longer to see if they would visit me

again, but nothing.

Anyone feel free to share this post with that Route 66 group that I used to

subscribe to. Maybe somebody can share some information on this style gas

station/house. I would be interested to learn more.

PRESS RELEASE:

Tucumcari, New Mexico

On Saturday, October 25th, at 12 noon, the owners of the Blue Swallow

Motel, Dale and Hilda Bakke, will be presented with the annual Cyrus

Avery Award by the National Historic Route 66 Federation. Due to

their motel business commitments, the Bakke's were not able to attend

the Cyrus Avery Awards Banquet held in Springfield, Illinois, this

past September. In light of this fact, the award will be hand carried

and personally delivered to the Bakke's by Ken Turmel, a noted Route

66 historian and artist, who will be representing the National

Historic Route 66 Federation, and Mike Callens, owner of the Teepee

Curios and member of the New Mexico Route 66 Association.

The National Historic Route 66 Federation is a nonprofit, worldwide

organization dedicated to promoting and preserving Route 66. Heading

this fine organization is David Knudson, who serves as the executive

director. It is with great pleasure that the Federation presents the

2003 Cyrus Avery Award to Dale and Hilda Bakke, for their timeless

and heartfelt efforts in their restoration of the famed Route 66

icon, the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

A single award is presented each year to a restoration project, which

a panel consisting of the previous John Steinbeck Award winners and a

representative of the Federation deem to be the best executed

restoration project from the received nominations. Nominations can be

made by anyone except the panel members themselves.

Although, the Blue Swallow has been a most popular stopping point on

Route 66 since 1939, the Bakke's have brought their own unique

touches and special affection for travelers from around the world to

enjoy.

The Federation is very proud of the work that Dale and Hilda have

done and continue to put in around the clock. To this end, the

National Historic Route 66 Federation wish that the Bakke's would

have been able to accept the award personally at the awards banquet

evening in Springfield, Illinois this year, but everyone attending

the banquet certainly understand.

A heartfelt congratulation goes out to Dale and Hilda Bakke of the

Blue Swallow Motel. Keep up the great work that you do along the

Mother Road.

You may have read in the latest issue of American Road Magazine the

story by Bob Williams about the My Tin Man Diner. Good news has come

to this diner. Our hope is that someday people will again sit at her

counter and in her booths drinking their cup of joe and ordering

their favorite diner fare.

Diner to be restored locally

By MONICA MacPHERSON, Cape Cod Times contributing writer

MIKE VALERI/The Standard-Times

Workers guide the trailer bearing the burned-out My Tinman Diner

yesterday. The classic structure will be renovated in Westport.

BOURNE -- Ashes and scorched stool cushions where customers used to

sit were the only things left in the landmark My Tinman Diner after

an arsonist's fire in November 2000.

Three years later, owner Claire Bergeron has teamed up with the

American Diner Museum to restore My Tinman Diner and replace it with

another vintage building.

"I want to get it back the way it was," Ms. Bergeron said. The diner

was put onto a trailer and it was moved to Westport yesterday.

Ms. Bergeron paid for the move, and the diner will be restored by

the American Diner Museum in Lincoln, R.I.

Museum director Daniel Zilka had been working with Ms. Bergeron on

restoring the diner even before the fire. "This is the last of its

kind, so it's very important to save," Mr. Zilka said.

The diner is among the last of the double-ended Sterling

Streamliners with their distinctive rounded ends. Mr. Zilka, who went

to school for historic preservation and architecture, appraised the

property after the fire. He said the diner was worth $18,500 in 1940

and $54,000 when it burned three years ago.

My Tinman Diner, situated on the southbound side of MacArthur

Boulevard just before the Otis Rotary, was destroyed in a fire set by

a man whose wife worked there as a waitress. The arsonist, former

Bourne resident William R. Taylor, was convicted and sentenced to

five years in federal prison.

The initials JE are still visible on the side of the badly dam-aged

diner, built in 1941 and first owned by Vaudeville entertainer Jimmie

Evans in New Bedford. The eatery was moved to Bourne in the 1960s.

Volunteers will be needed to help with the restoration. It was moved

to Westport yesterday, where it will be restored.

"She's a beauty," said Mr. Zilka, president of the museum and one of

the people who will refurbish the structure. When the Sterling

Streamliner looks shiny and new, museum staff will find it a home,

selling it to someone who loves the iconic eatery as much as they do.

The organization tracks and tries to preserve the approxi-mately

2,500 diners left in the nation, seeing them as an important part of

American history.

While only a single brick from the foundation remains in Bourne,

plans for a new diner at the same spot are in the works for next

year. The museum helped Ms. Bergeron find a diner that she fell in

love with. Mr. Zilka is restoring that new diner, which is from

Signac, N.J., and made by the Mountain View Diner Co.

"We've got a lot of work to do," Ms. Bergeron said. "I want to get

the foundation in right away."

Ms. Bergeron hopes to have her new diner in place by spring and open

by the fall. The new diner will go back to the name The Otis Rotary

Diner, its name back in the 1970s, Ms. Bergeron said, adding that

she's looking forward to serving military personnel, locals and

tourists once again.

"All food that is going to be served there is going to be made

there," she said, adding that she takes pride in her homemade

cooking.

While the last three years have been difficult, Ms. Bergeron said,

she is thankful for the help she's been given.

"Without the help of the museum, I don't know what I would have

done," Ms. Bergeron said.

Go-o-o-o-d Mornin' road gang,

What I like about traveling with ghosts...is that they rarely bring a bag,

they don't increase the gas mileage because....well, they ...well....are as lite

as ......air.....And they usually like to sit on top of my mini-van and hang

on to the roof rack. Weeeee!

Humor aside, road "ghosts" are where so many of the flavors and inspiration

are. I wrote a song earlier this year entitled, "The Mother Road" and debut it

when I performed at the John Steinbeck Awards Dinner at this year's Route 66

Fun Festival in Springfield, Il. For those of you who were not in

attendence.....I'll paste the lyrics below for your reading enjoyment.

Hey, I have a serious side, too.....

Keep the "ghost" stories coming....

Keep on truckin',

Unkle Chesty

Verse 1

Stranded lives

Drift along the roadside

The skin of souls

Still praying for a ride

Distant lights

Beacons in the twilight

Draw the weary travelers

Seeking shelter from the night

Chorus

The Mother Road has a rhythm

The Mother Road has a feel

The Mother Road will guide you

When you slide behind the wheel

And if you close your eyes and listen

You will hear the desert sing

Of the Mother Road, of the Mother Road

Verse 2

Billboard signs

Weathered and abandon

Messages from yesteryears

Lay splintered and forgotten

But, if you peer beyond the peeling paint

And the faded aˆ?For Saleaˆ? signs

And youaˆ™ll see a breathing highway

Spinning dreams between the lines

Chorus

The Mother Road has a vision

The Mother Road has a feel

The Mother Road will guide you

When you slide behind the wheel

And if you close your eyes and listen

You will hear the mountains sing

Of the Mother Road, of the Mother Road

Bridge

Yeah, if you look real hard you will see the scars carved along her back

Etchings from the harvest plows that have churned across the cracks

Touch the beating asphalt that is worn and overgrown

And tell me where youaˆ™d be right now aˆ¦aˆ¦ if she had never led you home

Chorus

The Mother Road has a rhythm

The Mother Road has a feel

The Mother Road will welcome you

If you slide behind the wheel

And if you close your eyes and listen

You will hear the heartland sing

Of the Mother Road, of the Mother Road, of the Mother Road
