Sort of takes all the fun out of making a wrong turn

8 miles east of Keokuck and suddenly finding yourself

axle deep in some farmers field where the road ends,

doesn't it!!!

Guest Rob

Hi all,

I am new to the list, I have been readin the post and archives for better than

a week now. My name is Rob, and I live in south central Illinois. I am employed

as a union painter who works in the road construction business, striping roads.

My intrest in this group comes from hopes of helping me learn about roads of the

past, and the methods in which they were built. I am a serious model railroader

who wants to accurately depict the mid 1980's, but I am having trouble finding a

good source of info, and pics of the past. My latest road construction effort

has me working nights in St. Louis on several miles of the mother road. I hope

to learn a lot , and enjoy some of the memories you all may have of your

travels, as well as answer an questions that anyone may have about painting

roads.

Thanks,

While visiting my friend Olly down in Biloxi, MS he told me I could turn my

truck around in his yard.....he did it all the time.

I forgot that he had a small Nissan pickup......and I'm driving my one ton

Dodge with a diesel engine......about 7000 lbs....and was soon axle deep in

Mississippi mud. It only took the wrecker about 20 minutes to arrive and we

were soon on the road again.

You only need three things when you travel; credit

card, road service card and a cell phone!!! Takes

care of just about everything - and if you're driving

a new GM car with OnStar, you got it made - Made in

America.

American Road Volume 1 Number 1 looks great. It arrived just today

and it was while reading the letters that I first realized this group

existed. As the first person to join the group from a reference in

the magazine, I see I've got a lot of messages to get through to see

what you were up to before I got here. But I also have some nice

glossy magazine articles to digest so it may be awhile before I catch

up.

For now, just a hello from Ohio,

I stopped by the "new" Buffalo Ranch today and talked with the owner,

Terry Addington. They will be opening Thursday. No buffalo yet but

there are plans and some ongoing preparation.

I also stopped at the Pig-Hip on Saturday and discovered that Ernie

Edwards is now operating it as a museum. I imagine quite a few of you

knew that but it was news to me. That is the first time I've met

Ernie. He's a great guy and he's having fun.

I have, a few years ago. Little River Canyon, aka May's Gulf, is

located on Lookout Mountain near Fort Payne, AL, and has been billed

as the deepest canyon east of the Mississippi. It used to be a unit

of DeSoto State Park, but the last I heard it had been taken over by

the Department of the Interior for development as a national

monument.

To get there, exit I-59 onto AL 35 at exit 248. Head east, through

Fort Payne and up the mountain. Heading south on AL 176 leads you

on a delightfully twisty drive along the canyon's western rim with

plenty of overlooks. Once the road leaves the rim, the quickest way

back is to go straight where 176 heads left. This will take you

back down the mountain to US 11 at Collbran. Turning right will

head you back towards Fort Payne.

During the 60's, there used to be a chair lift ride that took folks

down to the canyon floor and back. Only a concrete pylon or two

remain today.

It appears to me that Thursday might be the day. All the signs went up

yesterday, and most of the parking lot is paved. Since my place is less than 2

miles down the road, and since I go past there at least twice a day, I'll let

everyone know when it's officially open. Betty Wheatley is helping to fill a

small display case in the new Buffalo Ranch, and I'm contributing some items as

well, so folks will be able to see what the old Buffalo Ranch looked like.

Anyone who plans to visit the site of the old Buffalo Ranch should come into the

center of Afton and visit me at Afton Station, where I have a pretty large

collection of Buffalo Ranch items, old original signs, and postcards on display.

Hey Ho:

Re the Pig Hip, there was a good article in the Chicago Reader last week

about it.

They had several nice pics, but the one of the fromt of the place made me

wonder who was in charge of making the sign.

Looked to me like it said "Route 66 Musem"

Dear Group,

Would anyone know the whereabouts of Jack Stewart, son of the late author

George R. Stewart? George R. Stewart wrote the well-known book "U.S. 40; A

Crossection of the United States of America". His son Jack went with the

author on one of his 1950 trips in preparation of the book.

I would like very much to make contact with Jack, if indeed he's even still

alive. Does anybody know?

Hi Jill!

Just wanted to tell everyone that your Highway 99 book series is an

excellent addition to every roadie's library! I really love "That

Ribbon of Highway" books I and II, and will certainly be looking

forward to completing the Highway 99 trilogy with book III. I highly

recommend to everyone to contact Jill, for I believe that there is a

special discount when all 3 books are ordered at the same time.

Right Jill? <http://www.LivingGoldPress.com>

Hats off to you Jill for a great multi-book production which

commemorates one of America's most important north/south highways in

the west!

God Bless and Happy Trails along America's Two Lane Highways!

Picked up a fascinating soft cover book at our local Borders

bookstore last weekend. "Americana - Roadside Memories"

Starts out with Rt 66 and goes thru each state going west. Then it

goes to Gas Station Memories and has chapters on stations, attendants,

pumps, globes, etc. The last chapter is devoted to Drive-In's and

titled Drive-In Deluxe. This covers the origins (how many know Steak

and Shake was started back in 1934 by Gus Belt, or has anyone heard of

Clown Hamburgers, or what the initials A & W (as in A & W root beer)

stand for - it's the initials of the two fellow that started A & W in

the 1920's - Roy Allen and Frank Wright.

There's lots of other great stuff in the nearly 300 pages of this

book - something to go hunt for on a weekend.

Hudsony,

Alex B

PS - Route 66 wasn't the only road to have a gasoline with it's number

on it - in this book is a picture of a logo - circular in shape around

the outside it says "HIGHWY FORTY GASOLINE" and has the U S 40 number

and shield in the middle.

Yes, $39 for all three, postage and tax included. That is the the Special

Offer going on right now via our flier (will send you one on request, or

just make up your own order form). And thanks so much for the accolades.

Alex,

I also picked up the same book at Borders last Friday. I believe it is a

compilation of three other books, two by Michael Karl Witzel, and one by Tim

Steil. As it turns out I have all three of those books but I couldn't pass up

this book at the price I paid, $7.95, and it's a brand new book, copyright 2003.
