Mike,

You are correct - it is a compilation of "Route 66"

by Tim Steil, 2002, Gas Station Memories and #3

Drive-In Deluxe, both by Michael Karl Witzel, 1994.

And the price I paid, off the discount table, was

the same.

Hey Alex

Glad you like the book. Actually, it is a compilation of three previously

released Motorbooks Enthusiast Color Series books, written by myself and

Michael Witzel..

Due to a bit of fine print in my contract with the publisher, they are able

to keep releasing it under different names without any input/approval from

the authors, and pay us pretty much nothing. In this particular instance,

they shafted us out of about 50K in royalty payments.

Anyway, hope you enjoy. I really need to read those contracts before I sign

them eh?

best

Tim

Timmy!

I take it then, by your email and our last phone convo, that if one

already has the previously and separately released books, then one

isn't missing anything from this new combined re-release?

Book publishers aren't the only culprit. Many music CD's are being re-

released, repackaged, and renamed. Especially when rights are sold to

overseas entities. A crime that the authors and music artists do not

receive their just due royalties in those cases!!!!

Either revolt or sign again with them in the future. Only two

choices. They won't quit those practices but then again,... it will

be decision time again...

Go indie.

God Bless.

Overseas entities. Neat phrasing. I recently

bought a 10 CD collection, Fabulous 50's, off ebay.

It's a great collection for somebody who grew up in

the 50's, as I did.

When the collection arrived from the seller, I did

wonder a little - the CD's were in paper envelopes,

rather than jewel cases. Then I took a good look at

the labeling. Jonata Recording Corporation, printed

in Malaysia. Knock-off's, more than likely.

You moist towlette of an ex-mailman you. How the hell are you. Best to

Melissa and the Turmelettes......

You're exactly right as far as, if you own the other three, nothing new to

see. They occasionally fix a typo etc, slap a different cover on it etc, but

other than that, its pretty much the same ole thing. On the converse however

at 7.95 I think it's a good deal for those that dont own the others, good

gift for new roadies or whatever. I'd rather see someone read about and get

into this stuff than not, no matter whose pocket gets the benjamins.

I assume it's a nice looking piece, but they never get around to sending me

a copy. Guess I'lll go to Borders and have a look myself.

They did this with my Route 66 book once already, put a different cover on

it, and called it "America's Route 66" and sold a few thousand of them to

Target.

When I protested, saying essentially "Hey...if someone goes and buys the

thing thinking it's a new book, and feel they got #$%'ed, who's name is

gonna be mud here?" The response i got was that their policy was caveat

emptor (buyer beware), and referred me to paragraph X, subsection y of my

contract..

Anyway.....Einstein on a bun I am, I signed for another book anyway. It's

due out in October. I supopose I ought to finish writing the damned thing.

Actually...it works out well in a twisted way. Now I'll have five books out,

and only have to write three. What the hell....it worked for Enron. For a

while..

What the hell, I have a great editor, and like driving around taking

pictures and writing about it. I'll probably sign for another still. It's a

wonderful life, and always preferable to the alternative.

Info at www.timsteil.com if anyone gives a rats end.

It appears to me that Thursday might be the day. All the signs went up

yesterday, and most of the parking lot is paved. Since my place is less

than 2

miles down the road, and since I go past there at least twice a day, I'll

let

everyone know when it's officially open. Betty Wheatley is helping to

fill a

small display case in the new Buffalo Ranch, and I'm contributing some

items as

well, so folks will be able to see what the old Buffalo Ranch looked like.

Anyone who plans to visit the site of the old Buffalo Ranch should come

into the

center of Afton and visit me at Afton Station, where I have a pretty large

collection of Buffalo Ranch items, old original signs, and postcards on

display.

I have a name for routes like US 62 and 52. I call them "cross

grain" highways because they go contrary to most of the other routes

in the US system. Both are even numbered highways, but they go as

much north-south as they do east-west. 62 goes from Canada to

Mexico, the only even numbered route to do so. I'm not sure if it

actually touches the borders, but if not, it's still pretty close.

US 52 begins near the Atlantic Ocean in Charleston SC and ends

up connecting with Manitoba route 39 in North Dakota.

The two routes are coaligned (along with US 68) between

Aberdeen and Ripley, Ohio. If you are driving downstream along the

north bank of the Ohio River, you are westbound on 52 and eastbound

on 62:)

There's another kind of highway I call cross grain. That's the

kind that crosses ridges and valleys one after another. The

Tennessee Valley is full of ridges which makes for some interesting

drives. Two of my favorites are VA/TN 70 from Jonesville, VA, to

Rogersville, TN. Another is TN 61. This one starts going with the

grain, heading NE out of Harriman until it reaches Big Ridge State

Park. Then it takes a hard right, crossing ridges and valleys until

it gets to SR 33. It follows that road (with the grain) to

Maynardville where it heads south again through Luttrell (Chet

Atkins' home town), ending at US 11W in Blaine.

I've put a photo of SR 61 in the BabyBoomerBob directory. The

picture was taken by the side of the road, looking north, showing

the road crossing a peaceful valley.

One quick OT note. I'm gotten more behind than usual on my

posts. I've got several planned, but I've had some flooding in my

house, and cleaning up is taking most of my time. I'll try to do

better soon.

I've spent the last three months going through 11 years of 35

mm slides and getting them scanned before they degenerate too much.

I came upon a couple of pictures of an old car that was parked at an

overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The plate on the back says it's

an old Hudson. I immediately thought of Alex:) So I've posted the

two photos to the BabyBoomerBob directory.

Now, I'm no expert on old cars and I'm taking that plate's

word:) If I'm in error, somebody yell and get me straight:) In any

case, It's one knockout of a car. Enjoy!

Greetings, fellow Roadies! As you know, American Road is not only an outlet for

road stories, but it is concerned with the preservation of various historic

structures, some of which AR will have direct involvement. So periodically I'll

bring you some news of various preservation stories, as I find them. I also

encourage all of you to post any stories you may find locally regarding

preservation efforts.

I'll get the ball rolling by posting a link to what appears to be another "save"

by the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana and local activists. The old

Fairmount High School in Fairmount, IN has been closed since 1986 and has

recently been badly deteriorating. It's been on Historic Landmark's "10 Most

Endangered" list for two years now. Why the uproar about another closed school

falling into disrepair? American icon James Dean graduated here in 1949.

Fairmount hosts the "James Dean Festival" every September that attracts

thousands worldwide. The high school serves as a place for people to see where

Dean began his acting career. Thus the importance for many, especially the town

of Fairmount, to keep this structure standing.

Here's a link to a story regarding more about Fairmount High School:

http://www.indystar.com/print/articles/3/0...9-1493-047.html

Also, for more information on the work of the Historic Landmarks Foundation of

Indiana, visit their website at: http://www.historiclandmarks.org

You can get an idea (and maybe a little inspiration) of what can be done when

the right people and resources get together.

Hi Bob,

Aw, that's an easy one!!! That is a 1929 dual cowl

Sport Phaeton; one of the rarer cars in the Hudson

lineup. It is, also, the only Hudson recognized as a

Classic by the Classic Car Club.

I know of two others - both right here in New

England in Massachusetts. One is as produced - the

other was converted to a funeral truck.

Thanks for the post, Bob.

I, too, have been looking for an issue. I would also

like to see one before committing to a subscription.

I'll check my local Barnes & Noble(s) to see if they

Nice story. Too bad you didn't have my first guidebook to Oklahoma on that trip.

It was published in April of 1992. Of course back then not very many stores had

it and the network of 66ers as we know it today didn't exist. I hadn't even met

McClanahan at that point. That book's replacement, "Oklahoma Route 66,"

published in 2001, tells the whole story of the Key Bridge at Bridgeport.

FYI, the bridge's replacement, now known as the "Pony" bridge, opened to traffic

in 1934. The fire at the swinging bridge occurred in 1946. It was demolished in

1952.

Jim,

I just ordered your Oklahoma book the other day. There were a lot of

resources that I disovered after the 92 trip that I wish I had known

about before the trip. The great thing about it is it gives you a

great excuse to take another trip.

Thanks for the info about the bridge. My next long 66 trip I plan on

exploring a lot more of Arizona.

I can't claim a great road trip but I did get on the road today and had

lunch/dinner at Diner 23 (http://www.dennygibson.com/images/diner23.jpg) on

US23 in Waverly, OH. I didn't actually target it but remembered it was there

after meandering near by on various two-lane. I know some of it was what Bob

calls "cross grain". At least one intersection had both roads (OH28 & US62)

marked east-west.
