Congrats on the new wheels, Pat and Jennifer! Glad you're getting to

cruise through MO this weekend, as '66 through our state is

fantastic.

Oh yeah; we bought a new Monte Carlo supercharged SS yesterday at

Route 66 Motors (where else?) in Pacific. Black with red trim and

all the bells and whistles. Not quite the same car as our V8 '87

Monte SS was but very quick and very sleek. Navigator and I decided

on another Monte a few months ago (it's #3 and we still have the

first one) and she chose the color. She's partial to black because

that was the color of my old Ford when I was "courting" her back in

the fifties, at least that's what she tells me. Good cruisin' in the

new year, everyone.....Bliss & Navigator

That's neat about Gatorade and Gainesville. It's going on my Palm

Pilot so I can research it a bit further at the library after I surf

over to Gatorade.com. Thanks much.

I wonder if we recall the history of the Cards. They started with the

league in Chicago (when the Bears were in Iowa and called the Staleys

after Staley Syrup, which is still in Decatur), then moved to Saint

Louis, MO, and currently reside in Arizona. I guess that makes them

the official TEAMS of Route 66.

Sounds like I'm going to need a ton of film, and not just for the

book. Thanks so much. Lake Superior is already one of my favorite

destinations.

Yanno, I used to live in the shadows of Marquette University in

downtown Milwaukee. Coincidence? Probably. It's a good three miles

from 41. Marquette High School isn't, though.

If 41 ever went through Indianapolis, I don't know about it. I'd like

to find out.

I do stand corrected on the Cozy Dog. Co-Z dog was a cheap imitation

by a local establishment called Mel's Drive-In. I didn't mind since

they gave an etymology, but they closed about a year ago. Too bad,

since they had Milwaukee's finest chili cheese fries.

41 still runs that way according to Mapquest. It changed alignments

in Southeastern Wisconsin, which includes the part I was born near.

If you have a map, the old alignment is County 241 in Milwaukee

County. 41 now shares road with Interstate 94 in Milwaukee County. I

can't see the logic of that move, since most of the kitschy

restaurants and one defunct drive in theater are on old 41. Why the

federal government wants to stab taxpaying businesses in the heart, I

don't know.

I support the Interstate system, because it keeps the maniacs off the

fun roads, but a bit of common sense is in order.

Toyota? Isn't that made in a small Japanese town called Maysville,

Yes, I do believe many Toyota models, in fact, are made in America.

That's OK. I think Jennifer is going to be happier with her trade-in.

Neons, alas, are bad cars. This isn't just my opinion, but also in

Consumer Reports, a used-car buyer we encountered and others. Alas,

the PT Cruiser has a Neon engine -- not a good sign for that model

getting repeat business.

I'm a happy Saturn buyer (going on 125,000 miles with no major

problems), but I've seen some troubling signs within the company

that's probably going to make me get a Toyota or Honda for my next

car.

I'll gladly buy American, but only if it's not a piece of crap.

Ron,

You are correct. Many Toyota models are made from genuine Toyota

Japanese parts which are assembled in California. Many American made

vehicles (I won't mention names) are assembled in Mexico. D'oh!!!!

BTW - The most reliable Toyota engine ever made was the 20R, 22R, and

22RE models. Those engines were primarily used the the Toyota 2WD and

4WD Pick-ups, 4 Runners, and Celica's. Toyota stopped production of

these engine models in 1994. That was the reason why I bought the

last 1994 model pick up truck. The reason why Toyota stopped

production of the engines (although they won't admit it) is because

those engines never made anymore money for Toyota once they left the

dealer's lot. Since they were known to last a minimum of 300,000-

500,000 miles without any breakdowns, consumers never had to bring

those engines in for repairs. Hence, Toyota figured that they were

losing repair cost and replacement parts revenues.

Try Honda. I've got a 1992 Honda Accord with 205,000 miles and still running

I think I answered this once before, but here it is again.

US 41 never went thru Indianapolis. It ran (runs) from Evansville to

Vincennes to Terre Haute to Rockville and on to Chicago. You can still

drive the old alignment from just north of Vincennes to about Carlisle.

The old road also went thru Sullivan but now bypasses it.

Since we have hi milage claims for foreign tin,

here's a few hi milages for "American" built cast

iron.

Between, say, the early 1970's to around 1990 I used

to buy American Motors Ramblers, the 440 American

model, station wagons. I'd find these cars with

80,000, 90,000 and one or two with at least 100,000

miles on them - and buyable for around $75.

4 or 5 years later they would wind up in the local

salvage yard with 225,000, 250,000 - and the last one

I had, a 1969 440 wagon, had somewhere around 290,000

miles on it. The only reason they went to salvage was

the bodies were gone - the 232 seven main bearing 6

cylinder engine was still going strong.

My maintenance costs on these cars - somewhat less

than $50 a year. Tho, I admit to replacing the upper

trunions on the front end of the last one, the 1969,

that cost me $175 for the parts - I did the job

myself.

I just never put any money into these cars - just ran

them into the ground, then went and bought another

one.

The 1986 Monte Carlo I just sold - bought that one

in the fall of 1998 with 112,000 miles on it and sold

it 2 months back for $300 with 178,000 miles - only

reason I didn't run higher milage was because I bought

a 1987 Dodge truck off a tow company in MA for the

outlandish sum of $1 - it had 107,000 miles on it when

I got it, and it naturally got used more than the

Monte Carlo - it currently has 135,000 miles on it.

These cars, especially the Ramblers, were built in

an era when they wereen't expected to be used by the

same owner much more than 3 years or 50,000 miles,

whichever came first.

My current ride?? A 1992 Buick LeSabre which had

108,000 miles on it when I bought it last October.

Well, I probably won't put much milage on it because

the truck is used mostly for local use, so the Buick,

like the Monte Carlo, will be used mainly for long

trips.

Happy - and Safe - travels in 2004. Maybe we'll get

to see some of you roadies along the way this year.

Hudsonly,

Naturally, I am horribly saddened by this. Betty and I had spoken a few

times about what it would take to buy the property, but the price was just

too high. Betty is a dear lady who has suffered so much loss recently -- the

death of her husband of many years, her 40+ year business (Dairy Ranch), and

now this. When I drive past Buffalo Ranch each day on the way to Afton

Station, I notice minor activity there, but so far (at least as of yesterday)

no demolition. I'll be driving past again tomorrow at 7 a.m. I'll be sure

to stop, and later give a report on what I see happening, if anything. I

will also be vigilant in making sure that nothing of historical value has

been heaped on a rubbish pile.

Just another tourist trap? Maybe, but not to those of us who understand the

joy that places like Buffalo Ranch gave to generations of traveling

Americans. This indeed is very, very sad news.

Greetings to All:

This morning I received some sad news regarding Buffalo Ranch on Route

66 outside of Afton, Oklahoma. The message came from Betty Wheatley who

operated the Dairy Ranch on site for decades. This is what she said:

"Lawrence Shumaker and Terry Addington have bought the Buffalo Ranch.

Everything is to be torn down. They are going to put a big Hotel, Cafe,

Casino and truck stop there. The Dairy Ranch has already got their

eviction notice. They have started a bldg, that some one told me was to

be a Quick Trip and gas pumps. I know these guy's, but I have not

talked to them. I am trying to get a hold of them to see about making

some kind of memorial to the Ranch. As I find out things I will let you

know."

So "progress" strikes again it would seem. I was sick to hear it.

St. Thomas, NV was flooded when the Hoover Dam was completed and the Colorado

River backed up to form Lake Mead.

The prolonged draught has caused this ghost town to resurface and I was able to

walk through there a few weeks ago.

I have posted a brief history & some photos including the "main" road which was

probably the only road. See:

How interesting! I am in Bullhead City, not too far from there.....is it

possible for just anyone to go check it out?? Can you tell me how exactly to

get there? That would certainly be worth checking out!!

I will go on record as saying this thoroughly stinks! The law of this country

is built on proprety rights, and so the uninhibited taking of our national

treasures in the name of those who "own" the land will continue...until, of

course, they are stopped by the means availabe to do so...if something can be

done by folks in St. Louis who are watching places like the Beacon Hill go to

let us know...as Lulu would say: from a (concerned/pissed off/pick one or both)

I haven't read Berg's book yet, but I keep meaning to get it. (His

web site's apparently the only place you can order it.) For those who

haven't peeked yet, you can see state-by-state excerpts of his

travelogue on his web site.

I also haven't read the following title yet, but this discussion

finally prompted me to order it from Amazon before it's too late

because I can't find it anywhere else.

Lonely Is The Road - U.S. 50: A Journey Across The Heartland

By Wendell Trogdon, et al

I did see one of Trogdon's other books about Indiana byways in the

regional section at a local book store recently, and it looked

intriguing. Didn't spend the money for it though, because it really

wasn't my specific topic of interest.

I have read the following title, published in 1993. (Someone

mentioned this book in a prior thread months ago but got the title

wrong.)

Highway 50: Ain't That America

By Jim Lilliefors

It's billed in the same genre as Blue Highways and Travels with

Charley. It's a mixture of trip log and the author's personal

discovery. I thought it was interesting, but I'm biased with a

personal interest in Route 50, so I'm guessing others might judge it

as a little weak, not quite in the same league as the aforementioned

books. If you're gonna read it, I'd say try finding it at your local

library first, rather than springing for it. (Won't the author be

thrilled at that suggestion!) See also http://www.fulcrum-

books.com/html/highway_50.html for details.

I once stumbled across a German web page (ran it through a garbled

web-based translation) that depicted a photo book of the German

author's U.S. 50 trip across America. Now I can't find the page, but

maybe I've got it logged somewhere. I'd love to have a copy of that.

In reference to this passage from the article:

"According to historians of the road, like Jamie Jenson, whose Web

site, RoadtripUSA.com, features a trip along Highway 50, the

designation dates back to a mid-1980's Life magazine article that

warned of the road's lack of services and sites."

It's an oft-repeated message that the "loneliest" designation came

from an article in Life magazine. However, the following source says

that the source of the monniker is Trailer Life (the magazine of the

Good Sam RV club).

From http://www.westcoastroads.com/nevada/us-050.html

"A popular story was that in a 1986 Life magazine article, U.S. 50

was listed as desolate road devoid of many services. The article

warned travelers to avoid U.S. 50 entirely. However, this article

never appeared in Life magazine; in fact, it appeared in Trailer Life

magazine."

I note, however, that the first paragraph of that U.S. 50 web page

refers to 50 as the Lincoln Highway, which is correct in that part of

the country, but the reference leads one to believe, with its

juxtaposed description of 50 as a cross-country route, that the

entire alignment was Lincoln, which is incorrect. Probably just a

sloppy choice of phrasing and missing details, but it makes you

wonder about the author's accuracy in general.

If the westcoastroads.com page is correct, a lot of authors

attributing the source of "Loneliest" to Life magazine ought to wipe

the egg off their faces. It's taken on the status of urban legend,

repeated so many times no one questions it. I haven't seen the

original article, but when you think about it, it's logical that an

RV magazine would warn its readers about steep grades and a lack of

RV-specific services on a long stretch of federal highway that might

not cause a similar degree of problems for car travel.

Can anyone confirm for sure that the correct origin of the Loneliest

Road honor is Trailer Life?
