Jim:

The quickest legal way I can think of to get this songs is to download

a free iTunes program from Apple and start buying the songs one by one

for 99 cents apiece. Broadband connection is recommended.

We are having an informal get together at The Aztec Hotel on Monday the 27th

of this month from 5 to 7 PM. Huel Howser is planning on attending as well

as many other supporters of the preservation project of The Aztec Hotel.

Please join us for a viewing of the 'California Gold TV show' that features

The Aztec Hotel in Monrovia and Wigwam Motel in San Bernardino. The show is

on at 6 PM.

This is not only a party but a show of support for the Route 66 community in

California.

Guest Jennifer

I use an MP3 player to hold all my music. I have a Dell DJ, which is

a 20GB hard-drive based MP3 / WMA player. Most of my songs have come

from my own CDs or else I purchase them individually from online

services such as iTunes or allofmp3.com.

I really like using the MP3 player and to me, it has made CDs the 8-

track of today. All my CDs would get scratched or start skipping,

and it's so bulky to carry CDs. I have over 2500 songs on my MP3

player, which is about the size of a deck of cards.

All of the music is organized using various fields called ID tags

which classify the Artist Name, Album, Track #, Song/Track Title and

Genre.

It's fun to group your music together to create playlists. I have

playlists like "Road Trip" and "Get Your Kicks" as well as "British

Invasion" and "Retro Vegas Lounge" which has gems by Frank Sinatra,

Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Wayne Newton, etc. "On a Mission from

God" contains songs by the Blues Brothers or others from the movie

soundtrack. I also have playlists involving specific decades, 60's,

70's, 80's. I have a playlist called "I Love New York" which

contains all songs about New York City, "Living at the Movies"

contains movie themes like Jaws, Raisers of the Lost Ark, James

Bond, Pink Panther, etc...the possibilities are endless.

I had a MGTD - my advice is to take along a lot of spare parts and

expect a significant problem every 1,000 miles or less. I gave my son

condolences when he excitedly called me to let me know of his 1988

Jaguar purchase. Those older English cars have great looks, appeal

and their unique fragrance is seductive - a great combination of

leather and oil - but don't expect them to be reliable. They are like

sailboats; they take a lot of tinkering and love of maintenance. They

are also very much like a high maintenance wife and you need to love

them unconditionally to put up with them and they take even more

attention to their quarky needs.

All my best,

Gene

Subj: INTERIOR: Idaho Gov. Kempthorne nominated for secretary post

Date: 3/17/2006 6:57:47 AM Pacific Standard Time

From: StuartG@sema.org

To: , stevem@sema.org

E&E: Friday, March 17, 2006

INTERIOR: Idaho Gov. Kempthorne nominated for secretary post

Dan Berman, E&E Daily reporterPresident Bush yesterday nominated Idaho Gov.

Dirk Kempthorne to take over as secretary of the Interior Department, a choice

likely to be approved by the Senate despite the wide range of controversial

issues surrounding the department and opposition from environmentalists.

Known as a states' rights conservative, the Republican governor was

considered the leading candidate to replace Gale Norton since she announced her

resignation last week.

"Dirk understands that those who live closest to the land know how to manage

it best, and he will work closely with state and local leaders to ensure wise

stewardship of our resources," Bush said in an Oval Office announcement

yesterday evening.

Kempthorne said he would work to improve the fractured relationship between

stakeholders on the divisive issues facing Interior. "One of the hallmarks of

my public service has been my ability to bring people to the table and to work

together to build consensus," Kempthorne said. "I pledge to you and to the

American people that I will continue in that role of reaching out and finding

solutions.

But environmental groups immediately opposed the nomination, citing

Kempthorne's record as governor and in the Senate during the mid-1990s.

"Dirk Kempthorne is Gale Norton in pants," said Chuck Clusen, senior policy

analyst with the Natural Resources Defense Council. "Dirk Kempthorne surely

will continue this administration's 'drill first, ask questions later' approach

to public land stewardship."

Confirmation could be quick

Senators in both parties applauded the nomination and predicted a smooth

confirmation process for Kempthorne, who served one term as senator from Idaho

in

the mid-1990s.

"Everything I know about him tells me he will be confirmed and make an

excellent secretary," said Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Pete

Domenici (R-N.M.), whose committee holds jurisdiction on the nomination.

President Bush "made a fine choice," said Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho). "He is

talented, energetic and understands the issues that surround public lands and

endangered species."

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Energy Committee ranking

member Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) also praised the selection and predicted

Kempthorne

will be confirmed without much hassle.

Selecting Kempthorne was "a smart and cautious move by a weakened president,"

said Don Barry, vice president of the Wilderness Society and a former

assistant Interior secretary. "The last thing he needs is a draining

confirmation

battle."

The nomination of a former senator could also limit the temptation for

senators to place a procedural "hold" on Kempthorne in order to press the Bush

administration on Interior policy issues, including a proposal to allow oil and

gas

lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico's Lease Sale 181 area, a plan opposed by

the Florida delegation.

Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) last night told E&E Daily he would use the

confirmation hearings to revisit the lease sale 181 decision with Kempthorne.

"It

will certainly be an opportunity to discuss it more closely," said Martinez

said,

a member of the Energy Committee.

But Martinez demurred when asked whether he would place a hold on Kempthorne

to force the administration's hand. "I'm not going to go there now," he said.

After Norton's resignation, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) said he would block the

nomination for Interior secretary if the nominee supports drilling in the 181

area. But earlier this week, Domenici cast a stern warning to any senators

considering holds. "It's absurd to think you're going to get major American

policy changes by blocking a Cabinet member," Domenici said, saying he would

encourage the leadership to call for a vote on any hold (E&E Daily, March 15).

Barry said senators should use the confirmation process to press Kempthorne

on several controversial issues from Norton's tenure at Interior, including the

recent rewrite of National Park Service management policies, increased

Western oil and gas development and the proposed $1.1 billion in public land

sales

proposed by the Bush administration in the fiscal year 2007 budget.

"There's no shortage of bad policies that need to be reviewed, and we would

hope the confirmation process gets an agreement from Gov. Kempthorne to review

them and reconsider them," Barry said.

ESA record

If Kempthorne is confirmed, he could quickly become a major factor in the

push by Republicans to revise the Endangered Species Act.

While Norton supported changes to ESA as Interior secretary, she was not a

vocal advocate for them. But Kempthorne was part of a bipartisan coalition that

attempted to get an ESA bill out of the Senate.

"ESA may move up in priority" because of Kempthorne's prior experience, said

Barry, who represented the Clinton administration in 1997 negotiations with

then-Sen. Kempthorne, Sens. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Max Baucus (D-Mont.), and

former Sen. John Chafee (R-R.I.).

Kempthorne and supporters ran into opposition from conservatives who said the

bill did not adequately address property rights or water rights issues and

from environmentalists who said it would severely weaken statutory protections

for imperiled species. The legislation included language to provide incentives

to landowners to voluntarily conserve habitat and a streamlined agency

consultation process (E&E Daily, Sept. 18, 1997).

The bill "would have rolled back different provisions from ESA, but were

nowhere near as sweeping and damaging" as legislation promoted by House

Resources

Committee Chairman Richard Pombo (R-Calif.) in recent years, Barry said.

John Chafee's son and replacement in Congress, Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-R.I.),

has stated the 1997 Kempthorne bill would be a "starting point" for discussion

on new legislation to revise ESA. The Senate Environment and Public Works

Committee may take up legislation to revise the Endangered Species Act soon

after

the weeklong St. Patrick's Day recess.

As senator, Kempthorne was also prominently involved in an unsuccessful

effort to revise the U.S. EPA's Superfund waste cleanup program, and he

successfully led an effort in the 104th Congress to enact the Unfunded Mandates

Reform

Act, which limits Congress' ability to impose environmental and other costs on

states. In 1996, Kempthorne took a lead role in advancing amendments to the

Safe Drinking Water Act to President Clinton's desk for signature (Greenwire,

June 17, 2003)

"During his career in Congress, Gov. Kempthorne earned a paltry 1 percent

lifetime LCV score," said Tony Massaro of the League of Conservation Voters.

"Enough said."

Idaho record

Environmentalists are also concerned about Kempthorne's record over eight

years as Idaho governor.

Kempthorne "has allowed the energy and logging industries to wield a very

heavy hand in influencing how to mange our public lands," said Rob Vandermark at

the National Environmental Trust.

Under Kempthorne, Idaho was one of several Western states to go to court and

challenge the Clinton-era Roadless Area Conservation Rule limiting

roadbuilding, logging and other development on 58.5 million acres of national

forests.

Kempthorne also worked with the Interior Department to remove ESA protections

for the gray wolf in Idaho. He and Norton recently signed an agreement giving

Idaho more control over more than 500 gray wolves in the state as part of the

process to delist the wolves in the Rocky Mountains.

But President Bush cited Kempthorne's success in helping forge a deal on

water rights in the Snake River Basin between the state, federal government and

Nez Perce Indian Tribe.

In exchange for dropping its claim to most Snake River Basin water, the tribe

under the agreement will receive $80 million in cash and land, annual rights

to 50,000 acre-feet of Clearwater River water, and a pledge from state and

federal governments to provide tens of millions of dollars for fish habitats and

other environmental projects (Greenwire, Nov. 23, 2004).

Thanks for the link, Allen. Even though the petition is approaching

18,000 signatures, I wouldn't expect a wholesale change back to the

old format. I'd say the best we could expect is for them to tweak

this new version. As group owner, I was as surprised as anyone when I

logged in the other day and saw the format change. I would've thought

Yahoo would have at least informed the group owners of the upcoming

change, but that didn't happen. The best I can offer is for everyone

to play around on the new version to get comfortable with it....it's

probably here to stay.

I doubt that they'll do anything. Another group that I belong to did

move and will eventually close the site on Yahoo. How about something

more upbeat. Anyone planning any interesting road trips this summer?

Indiana and Kentucky officials have announced plans to replace the 77

year old Madison-Milton Bridge crossing the Ohio River from historic

Madison, IN to Milton, KY. It's carried US 421 traffic since around

1950. Although a slightly intimidating bridge to drive compared to

modern bridge engineering, the narrow lanes and ascension to the main

bridge span makes for a careful drive. If you're a fan of old steel

truss bridges and find yourself in the area, it's worth the drive

across and a visit to Madison. The future of the Madison-Milton Bridge

is uncertain once a new bridge is built. It could stay open as a

pedestrian bridge, according to transportation officials.

In continuing the thread on *interesting* street names...

There's a street in Alviso CA (just north of Highway 237 off First

Street--North of San Jose CA <although San Jose *claims* the area as

part of its jurisdiction>)... called

Hope Street

And when you see the *end of Hope Street* .. you are in the Salt

Marshes of San Francisco Bay.

(Just got this nice tidbit from the Silicon Valley Metro weekly

newspaper...) I've been on Hope Street and have explored Alviso a

bit (because I used to work down the street a ways and we'd walk

there for lunch)... just never noticed the street name in such a

way.

Subject: The Springfield Tornadoes of This Past Sunday (Including

Pictures)

To all,

My sister just sent me this wonderful link:

http://www.wnns.com/stormphotos.htm

In it you'll find over twenty pictures of the devastation Springfield

suffered last Sunday night.

In two of the pictures, you'll see that the Lauterbach giant lost his

head.

All three southern Springfield alignments of 66 were hard hit. T66 from

MacArthur to Chatham Road was particularly hard hit.

5th and 6th streets were also hit.

The Dirksen Parkway was also very hard hit.

I was with Beth that night and we were in the basement on 4 different

occassions (beginning at 8pm and lasting until 4am.). It was quite the

night. Beth's place was luckily a half mile north of the most severe

devastation. But our block had downed trees and downed power lines; but

nothing as severe as a half mile south of us. I was thankful that Beth was

so well storm prepared. We had candles and flashlights and were able to

listen to a battery powered radio all night long.

This was the worst storm Springfield has seen in 50 years.

We toured the area the following Monday and it truly was as bad as these

pictures show.

Anyway, I wanted to share this great link and these stark pictures.

Yours,

Carl Johnson

Emily and I have taken a shine to U.S. 77 through Oklahoma. North of

Oklahoma City a few months ago, we had a great meal at a place called

Lucille's, in a historic bank building in Mulhall, and enjoyed the

Oklahoma hills.

This time, after a rainy weekend in Texas and a nasty traffic jam

just before the border, we took U.S. 77 north from the Red River. The

highway takes a particularly scenic path through the Arbuckle

Mountains. Interstate 35, which shadows the old road, only hints at

the scenery. U.S. 77 takes you through the heart of it. It reminded

me of the Smoky Mountains. We saw tourist cabins, canoe shacks and

other mom-and-pop businesses along the sweeping bends in the road.

U.S. 77 also cuts through Pauls Valley, which has one of the best-

looking Art Deco gas stations I've seen. It's no longer an operable

gas station, but it looks like someone's trying to fix it up.

We noticed that U.S. 77 had a truck route through town. We found out

why. The regular alignment goes through brick streets in downtown.

Pauls Valley is a charming place; we'll have to check it out more

thoroughly next time.

One of the highlights of our trip on U.S. 77 is the Van's Pig Stand

in the University of Oklahoma town of Norman. Van's in Norman is a

satellite branch of the original 1930 barbecue stand in Shawnee.

Although the Van's in Norman has been there only since 1994, it is

unique because it took the remnants of an old gas station, complete

with the canopy, and converted it. The restaurant also is festooned

with a bunch of spectacular architectural neon. It reminded us of a

similar conversion of a gas station at the original Threadgill's in

Austin, Texas. By the way, the barbecue was terrific. The taste of

the curly-cut fries reminded me of the Cozy Dog in Springfield, Ill.

OK so this must be the night for announcements but this one is just as big as

the Universal one if not more important.

Our new newspaper will be called THE ROUTE 66 PULSE, the Heartbeat of

America's Mother Road. Our first issue will come out at the Albuquerque event in

June. It will be monthly, cover the entire road with articles that entertain,

inform and enlighten. We will have a web site soon.

We are looking for editors, writers, photographers, advertisers, sales people

and of course readers. We look forward to hearing from you with any suggestions,

ideas or advice to make The Route 66 Pulse your first choice for news about

Route 66.

Thanks

Yesterday was the grand opening of the new American Sign Museum here in

Cincinnati. I attended and, even though it's not exactly "on the road",

there are plenty of former road side decorations inside and I thought group

members might be interested. I've posted a few pictures at

http://www.dennygibson.com/asmopen . The normal "get bigger pic by clicking

little pic" does apply.

Hi!

Here are a few ideas for you:

--Warrensburg, MO...at the Johnson County Courthouse is the statue of Old

Drum and the "Tribute To The Dog" perhaps the most eloquent pieces of

scripting about the canine ever written.

--Jefferson City, MO--The State Capitol is a pretty cool one...if you take

the Bridge (US 54) across the river you get a great view of it across the

Missouri River...

--Bonnoits Mill, MO...If you are willing to take a little side trip, if you

turn left on CR A about 10 miles east of Jefferson City, about 6-7 miles

North the road ends in this extremely cute watering hole on the Missouri

River...there is a cool old saloon there called Krautmanns (on the National

Register).

--50 connects with I-44 just East of Union. If you are hungry, at the next

exit off I-44 (SR 100) is the Tri County Truck Stop/ Restaurant...the

Country Cured Ham is fantastic

--50 piggybacks I-44 to Lindbergh Blvd. in St. Louis...then connects with

I-255 to cross the Misssissippi and follows that to I-64...it follows I-64

for several miles before veering off to Lincoln, IL...real cute little

downtown there....

--outside of Lincoln you can turn right off of 50 and take old 50 through

Summerfield and Trenton...Trenton is a cool little town with lots of cool

signs, a great bowling alley and the Trenton House Restaurant, which may

have the best onion rings you will ever find...

--on to the East on old 50 is the little town of Breeze, which has Wally's

Drive In...a real throwback!

--East of Breeze is Carlyle, where you can access the lake...on the east

side of town is a park that has a little bridge you will see to the left; as

I recall it is from the 1800's...

That is as far as I have gotten...I am sure others can chime in and correct

me if I am wrong....a guy names Wulf Berg did a book called "US 50 Coast to

Coast" that you can procure on line...enjoy your trip! Tsingtao Kip

I wonder how much data we have assembled on Old York Road's importance in

the colonial era? Granted, I'm talking about a time well before the

Automobile. But a road is a road is a road. . . .

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP (NJ) - The 1740s-era Inn of the Crooked Billet took a

step toward being preserved, as the township committee voted 3-2 to buy the

historic house that may have been visited by George Washington.

. . . "A piece of history has been preserved," Deputy Mayor Henry "Pete"

Chamberlin said after casting the deciding vote in favor of purchasing the

former inn, which is known as both the Inn of the Crooked Billet and the

Cattail Tavern. Mayor Douglas P. Tindall and Committeeman Mark Tobias also

supported the purchase.

The building was built as early as 1747 and served as a way station for

travelers between Philadelphia and New York, as well as a social center for

nearby farmers.

Ha!

My wife brought a story home like this a few weeks ago. She saw a lady

seemingly in distress standing outside the dental office where she

works. When my wife walked out and asked if there was anything she

could do to help, the lady cried that her automatic door unlocker

wasn't working on her car and that she was in a hurry and that her

phone was locked in the car so she couldn't call AAA.

My wife looked at the automatic key fob the lady was holding and saw

all the keys on it. She asked the lady if the key that she uses to

*start the car* was on that key chain. Well, yes. Then, my wife

suggested that she try the key in the car door. Well, by golly, the

key worked.

Before the lady drove off, my wife suggested that she stop by the

local mall and get a new battery for the key fob.

Wonders will never cease, eh?

Evening friends,

The folks at the Route 66 Chamber of Commerce in Deadwood, NM need our help.

They have a project where they are trying to get the state to change the

name of the old road to Route 66. They need us to write letters to their

governor in support of this project. If all goes well they will be able to

get this done in this the 80th anniversary of the road.

Please send your letters to Bill Richardson, Office of the Governor, 490 Old

Santa Fe Trail, Room #400, Santa Fe New Mexico 87501. E-mails will not work

although phone calls might.

Once again a fellow roadie needs the Route 66 Community to stand up and be

counted. Please pass this on to all your friends and fellow roadies. The

more letters the better.

For more information call Keith & Kerry Matson 505 832 0603 or e-mail them

at matson-3357@peoplepc.com

They want to not only thank everyone but invite you to stop by on your way

to and from Albuquerque and visit them.

Thanks

The Pay-Pal system is now up and working on the web site

www.2006route66festival.com

Also the tours will be up this week. The tour company has done an excellent

job of putting together five tours for our guests. Check them out and sign

up early.

The summit and e-group meetings are in the final stages. We have been

working on getting the cost down for each and that is why we have not posted

the locations.

Among the many things that will be happening at the event we will also have

a Serbian TV crew doing interviews. Quite a few new authors and artists. The

Route 66 Pulse first issue will be hot off the press. Michael Wallis and

Suzanne will be autographing their new book on CARS.

As always any questions please forward them on to us.

See you all in Albuquerque.

Are you from Arkansas or near Arkansas? I live in a little town

I wouldn't be born until 17 years after 1956. I would love to have

been able to drive on the highways the way they were back in those

days.

Cool. My long held simplistic theory was that the old road had been a

straight line across the gaps. After Saturday's visit, I realized that

couldn't be the case for the Great Miami crossing and figured Sullivan road

had to fit in there somewhere. The map explains it.

Thanks,

Denny

I still have the Stillwater section to checkout and I definitely want to

roam around Tadmor some more - on a dry day. It's kind of embarrassing to

think how many times I've driven US-40 over those dams and am only now

taking the time to get off of them. As I stood beside that old abutment on

Saturday, I did exactly what you said and tried to picture wagons passing

over it. Your comment on the Stillwater makes me a little more anxious to

take a look. I'll be near by coming home from my Dad's this weekend and may

just have to give it a try.

I'm guessing the maps you mentioned were attachments and this group just

doesn't allow them. You can post them to the group's photo or files section.

I'm sure I'm not the only one interested.
