It Is--just teasing--altho not sure of its' exact

meaning. Using USA as a standard, 'poor' doesn't work,

we have that: un-educated, we have that, not good

health, we also have that: bad roads, that too, we

have: most any term you could use would also apply to

USA. Sometimes also wonder about term: 'third world'.

What is considered 'first world' or 'second

world'--never hear that reference. Hmmm--just things I

wonder, in my travels. Things to pass the time on long

dry stretches.

Your trip on I-10 will be fine, just carry large

bottle of drinking water, and explore the little towns

along the way--they are all great in their own way,

with much history and things to see unique to each.

It's been nearly twenty years since as a medic in the Army I was stationed

at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas, and visited both Ciudad Juarez and southern

New Mexico regularly.

I was there for nearly two years and was too poor to own a car, so my main

mode of transportation was either by bus, thumb, borrowed motorcycle, or

foot.

Being in the military and at Ft. Bliss were generally miserable experiences,

but frequent solo trips to Ciudad Juarez, El Paso's "sister city," are

memorable. I would often take a bus or catch a ride to the bridge to cross

into Juarez and stayed in tiny downtown motels above the quieter bars or

shops, like maybe a mile or so south of the crazy border bars. I was no

"Juarez Warrior," but I was young, poor, and reckless and attracted to the

surreal outlaw decadence that permeated Juarez's streets. Weekends the

streets near the border were an extreme carnival of violence, homeless

children, addicts, prostitutes, con artists and petty thieves, drunken

soldiers, wasted teenagers, loud and chaotic music and lights. Juarez was

thoroughly corrupt and is the perfect setting for Orson Welles' super bleak

noir film Touch of Evil. For some reason, all of this was very attractive

to me during this period in my life, and the experience, interestingly,

taught me a lot about myself, the people around me, and the world I

inhabited.

Dead bodies are often found in the deserts north of Juarez:

http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers.../ciudad_juarez/

I also made good friends in Juarez, listened to excellent music and story

tellers, watched a few bull fights, ate good food, and learned a little

Spanish and a lot about how to drink tequila.

All of southern New Mexico is incredibly beautiful, and I look forward to

leaving the Midwest to visit it again. It is one of the greatest places on

Earth to ride a motorcycle. I have very fond memories of Cloudcroft and the

Lincoln National Forest areas and the deserts and mountains of Dona Ana and

Otero Counties.

Thanks for the memories,

Pbm

I have traveled extensively in Southern New Nexico and Arizon over he

past 30 years - there are so many wonderful roads to travel and so

little time - actually, time can be your worst enemy as the distances

involed make stopping to enjoy what you are experiencing and

sighseeing becomes problematic.

The drive from the Roswell and Artesia area of New Mexico to the west

and Ruidoso starts as flat as a billard table as you are actually on

the southwestern edge of the Great American Plains - lots of gas

wells - lots of cactus fields and jackrabbits.

I would be happy to recommend a route for you if I knew your actual

itinery - from Artesia, why not travel south to Carlsbad Caverns and

a wonderful desert secret - Sitting Bull Springs?

US Highways 62/180 out of Carlsbad takes you through the Guadelpupe

Mountains and the unique feature - El Capitan - in Texas. On the road

to El Paso, you pass what is known as Salt Flats - a natural

outcropping of salt that started a shooting war among locals vying

for control in the last part of the 19th Century.

I would be happy to finish the trip with stories of Cornudas Texas -

now Wallace Town and an Old West Tourist Trap being devloped thiis

year - Hueco Tanks and local Indian history abound - old Spanish

Missions and more at El Paso and on, and on, and on.

The trip out of Artesia on US 82, toward Cloudcroft and Alamogordo,

crosses the plains and takes travelers up to the Lincoln National

Forest - nearby Sun Spot Observatory is worth a short stop. At this

point you are in the Sacremento Mountains. Lots of hiking

opportunities here.

The trip out of Roswell on US 70/380 is fairly similar - across the

plains area of New Mexico and up into the northern part of the

Lincoln National Forest and the Mescalero Apache Reservation.

Following Highway 70 into Ruidoso will be a treat for horse racing

fans - they would enjoy Ruidoso Downs and the Museum of the Horse

(and casino style gambling at the Downs and the Inn of the Mountain

Gods run by the Mescaleros). Again, lots of hiking opprtunities here

and skiing in the winter.

This whole area is known as "Billy" the Kid Country - the home of the

famous - or infamous - Lincoln County Range Wars that propelled "The

Kid" from being a ranch hand to a gunfighter. Some folks spend an

entire week just in this area alone. There are even "Billy" the Kid

tours.

I could go on about the many, many, art and culture opprtunities of

the area - I have been living and traveling in southern New Mexico

for 35 years and still have not benn able to see everything.

Following US 380 into Carrizozo puts you at US 54 and Valley of Fires

State Park and Three Rivers Petroglyphs Park where you can find

thousands of Native Marican Petroglyhps (incised rock art over 1,000

years old) and Pictographs (rock art paintings).

Below Alamagordo on US 70 you will find the world famous White Sands

National Park - the largest natural formation of Gypsum dunes in the

world.

I will try to post some more ideas for you in another posting - if

you have the time during you trip, I would certainly recomment that

you limit the trip on the Interstates to an absolute minimum - the

back roads may take longer but the chance to see and experience the

areas that you travel through cannot be compared to a 60 or 70 mile

an hour drive by.

It is galling to see a Chicagoan complain about impounding cars. At

least in New Mexico they do it to criminals. In Chicago they extort

cars from honest citizens who made the mistake of wandering into town.

Last year I parked my ten-year-old car at the Metra station, to take

the train to the Loop with my girlfriend. It was stolen. I

immediately reported it and then followed up my call with a visit in

person the next morning. The Chicago Police told me it'd probably

never be found.

A month later I was sent a form that my car had been sitting in

Chicago's impound yard for weeks, and I owed them a humongous storage

fee. I went in to deal with the matter, thinking it'd be a simple

matter, as it'd been stolen and reported after all. No, it was

strongly suggested that I should donate the car to the City of Chicago

to get rid of the fee I owed them.

Instead I got the car repaired at a garage by my girlfriend and went to

court to erase the fee. I didn't hire a lawyer of course, as it was a

simple matter and a lawyer probably would have cost as much as my car.

It was all a big joke on me. After I was told to make my simple case

of my car being stolen and reported to the cops, etc., I was not

allowed to say another word, as the presiding guy (not a judge but I

forget the term) told me to go jump.

I ended up actually paying as much as the car was worth. I only "broke

even." (The car was old enough that it wasn't worth being insured

against being stolen.) The only guy making out ok that morning at the

impound yard was a man whose son was a Chicago cop. His son was

getting the fee lifted for HIM. Unfortunately I didn't know any

Chicago policemen.

To those who are worried:

Worry no more a State Judge ruled the impounding as

Okay, let me get this straight--It's "galling" for a law-abiding

citizen from Chicago to complain about an unconstitutional

act--"galling" because somebody ELSE from Chicago got away with

something illegal (waiver of a fee for storage of a vehicle, an

illegal thing that YOU could not share in--it is difficult for me to

understand whether you are upset about the illegal act, or upset that

you could not share in the illegal largesse). This I do not understand.

What is "galling" to me is to be lumped in with your misfortune just

because I happen to live in Chicago.

I have lived in Chicago for 25 years now. But my car has only been

broken into once--and it happened 2 years ago in Santa Fe. But guess

what? As "galling" as it may be, I am NOT going to hold the illegal

act of one criminal against an entire city. I look forward to my next

visit to New Mexico, and of course to the fine city of Santa Fe.

As for the high fees charged by the Chicago Police Car Pounds, I also

find them extortionary. But the hearing about the waiver of the fee is

not a criminal matter--it's an administrative matter because it's

simply a storage fee. To compare this with the impoundiing of cars

because a person has been ACCUSED of a crime is apples and oranges.

In your case, gallingly rotten apples.

All the galling details of the last few posts aside, it is

unfortunately true that criminals often target vehicles that are

obviously non-local for their dirty deeds--whether theft of vehicle,

or breaking into vehicle. Out-of-state plates, rental car stickers,

etc. will be magnets for these people, mainly because if they are

caught in the act, the odds that an out-of-towner will return to

testify at a trial are much lower than if the victim is a local.

In the case of the ten-year-old car being stolen from the train

station in Chicago, for some criminals it is easier to hot-wire and

joy ride than to pay the train fare. True opportunistic crime.

In my case, we were in the process of unloading our luggage from our

car shortly after checking in to a motel in Santa Fe when we were

victims of a "smash and grab." Motel parking lots, train stations,

airports, etc are the prime areas for those with criminal intent.

This year I went for BBQ instead of turkey and headed to Nashville for

Thanksgiving. US-31E to Nashville, US-70 east, and US-27 north. At the turn

north, I hooked up with group member Baby Boomer Bob who showed me around

the Homestead/Harriman area. Pics & text at:

Anyone done this in the winter? We are moving my wife back from Washington

D.C. back out w/ me in Huntington Beach, CA (long story). We are huge road

trip fanatics and have done this drive back and forth 3x's now, this will be

our fourth. We've gone north, done the south, done a little bit in the

middle but would really like to take Route 66 back this trip. How is it

this time of year?

Also, we will most likely branch off the road and do some of the scenic

byways surrounding the area. My parents did this drive 2 years ago but in

the summer. Had always been my dads dream and he even bought new custom

plates for his vette that said "2 RTE 66" for the drive :D (They actually

live off 66 in Pasadena, CA)

Any tips would be great guys. Or any other ideas on alternate routes. We

think we are going to head down to the mississippi coast and stay w/ some

family in New Orleans first to see the devistation Katrina and Rita brought

(I know, it sounds depressing). We aren't sure if we'll head straight up to

St. Louis after that or angle over towards Oklahoma City.

and FYI, i'm a photography hobbyist so there will be a ton of pictures to

share :)

Carol and I took a February trip a few years ago. On the days when

the weather was clear, we had a great time. Those venues that are

open are happy to see some business, and much clearer photography

can be had of some buildings--no leaf-covered trees in the way of a

clear shot, and fewer cars parked in front of buildings as well.

The downside is that quite a few small businesses do close for the

season, and if it should be snowing, the usual concerns for winter

driving have to be considered. If you are driving in the more remote

areas, the chances of help during a storm can be problematic, since

snow removal resources will normally be busy on the Interstates and

main traffic arteries first. We ran into a zero-visibility issue at

Hooker Cut in Missouri that was pretty scary and forced us back onto

the superslab--where all the snowplows and salt-spreaders were.

If I was contemplating a winter trip, I would just attempt to build

a little flexibility into my schedule so that I could "lay low" if

weather should become a problem.

Greetings from the heart of Delta Blues Country; well, in my case

I'm sitting on the northern edge of it in Memphis.

Yesterday, the 27th of Dec, my daughter and I took a day and drove

to Clarksdale, MS, using Old Highway 61, as much as possible - which

is most of the way between Walls and Lula, MS. We did get off track

a couple of times as the road, whild adequately marked, is easy to

miss at times.

For me, this was a trip back in time - almost 50 years to be

exact. Of course 50 years ago I wasn't really looking at the

scenery. It's a tad difficult to enjoy the local color when you're

running 61 north at 80 or so with somebody behind you bent on

stopping you for the liquid refreshment you are carrying in the

trunk of the car.

But, I did recognize a few places, such as the Journey Inn and

Court (think thats right) on the south side of Memphis near the

TN/MS line. Most of the by-passed towns along Old 61 seem to have

retreated into stop sign cross-roads, now - the map shows places

such as Lake Cormorant, Newport, Evansville, but I didn't see much

of what could be called a "town".

Tunica proper hasn't changed a lot in 50 years - they do have a

wonderful Veterans Memorial on the south side of town that appears

to be well cared for and is worth a stop - there's a wide spot

across the street where you can pull over safely.

Most all of the old road is 2 lane, and narrow. But it is pretty

much empty now that the current "New" U S 61 to the east is 4 lane

divided for the folks in a hurry. The section between Grand Casino

Parkway N and Casino Strip Blvd, in Clack, is 4 lane - for the

convienence of the gambling tourists - but that's about it.

We actually made nearly as good time on the old road as we would

have on the new 61 - if you were just interested in driving from

here to there you'd only loose maybe 15 minutes or so. No traffic

for the most part, and what was out there was local and light.

We almost went to Arkansas coming out of Lula. Wound up on U S 49

and turned right, when we should have turned left. Oh, well, I got

a nice picture of a marker telling about the Henando DeSoto Memorial

Bridge - did he REALLY get this far north?? However, we discovered

our navigational error before arriving at the bridge (should have

gone just a little further and took a picture of it) and returned to

61 and south to Clarksdale

While we entere Clarksdale on 161 (State Street) we didn't see any

signs directing us to the Delta Blues Museum. It seems we should

have taken 161 (or you can take the 61 by-pass and turn onto Martin

Luther King Blvd, as you should from 161. Turn onto Desoto Avenue

and then onto 3rd Street. Blues Alley, Ground Zero Blues Club

(Morgan Freeman's place) and several other attractions are just down

3rd on the left.

We found it the easy way. There was an old lady standing by the

side of the street waving to us. So we stopped, she wanted a

birthday hug and $2.99 to buy herself a birthday cake. We asked her

how to get to the museum; she told us to turn around, take a right

at the stop sign, a left at the next stop sign and another left at a

3rd stop sign. Yeah, right!!!!!!!! So we gave her $3 for

her "birthday cake" and followed her directions - right into the

parking lot at the Delta Blues Musuem!!!!! I told my daughter we

should have gone back and given the lady another $5!!!!

The Delta Blues Museum is a great place for Blues enthusiasts to

visit. Tons of photos with descriptive texts, guitars of famous

blues players, like Pinetop Perkins and B. B. King (the "B. B."

stands for "Blues Boy" by the way, and even Muddy Waters cabin from

the plantation he was raised on. They also have a audio/video

presentation. ( http://www.deltabluesmuseum.com/ )

After we left the museum we traveled south on 49 for about a mile

or so to Hopson Plantation, which is also the home of the Shack Up

Inn B&B (B&B =- Bed and Beer - the fellow told us they don't cook).

Since this narrative is getting rather lenghty we'll just give you a

URL to visit ( http://www.shackupinn.com/ ) for more information.

Rates are reasonable at $45, $55, and $65 - but you need to make

reservations way in advance as the place is very popular.

We returned to Memphis via "new" 61 - a lot more stress full, but

at least the truck traffic wasn't all that heavy. So if you get

down this way someday, take a quiet country drive down Old Highway

61. I'll post some photos when I get a chance to download them.

Hi all,

Reading all these posts brought back many memories ... from when I

was a kid... My mom and dad were teachers...and every summer, as

soon as that last school bell rang, we'd race home, throw the last

stuff into our station wagon (Country Squire with the roof-rack

already packed and most of the stuff already in the car, of course),

and hit the road. For a while we lived in Montana... and our

grandparents and cousins were all in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and

thereabouts. So we'd drive from Kalispell down to Billings, then

through the Black Hills of South Dakota (seeing the Corn Palace in

Mitchell), then into Minnesota (where we saw Paul Bunyan and the

Blue Ox in Bimidgi) and then cutting through the Chicago suburbs and

through Ohio and finally hitting the Pennsylvania Turnpike ... (I

remember stopping at a lot of Howard Johnson's --the orange roof and

all) Sometimes my sister would be the *navigator* and sometimes I'd

get the task. Most of the time (especially in big cities where

knowing the streets was critical--Mom would be the navigator)...

Later, our family moved to New Mexico... and we'd really do the road

trip... from New Mexico through Texas on up to Pennsyvania... then

from Pennsylvania over to Montana... before heading back down to New

Mexico through Wyoming and Colorado. *whew*!

My sis and I saw a *lot* of road and scenery from the back of our

station wagons... (dad wore a bunch of them out over about a 10-year

period)

After college overseas, I got married and we moved to California...

but we've driven with our two kids to New Mexico a bunch of

times ... driven from New Mexico up to Colorado... and our most

recent trek was driving from the San Francisco area up I-5 all the

way to Vancouver, British Columbia with our kids and one of their

cousins.

I absolutely love just driving and exploring the back roads... the

drives from the SF Bay Area to Yosemite or Tahoe are interesting

(this week there are snow warnings and chain requirements... but

well worth the trip).

A few weeks ago a friend from Thailand dropped by to visit (on his

way to a vacation in L.A.)... and we drove up to Marin and

Inverness... beautiful redwoods up there! And the beaches are not

crowded this time of the year.

So.... Both of my kids are now all grown up... my son is in North

Carolina... so it looks like I'll have to pack up *ma* and get ready

for a long drive <grin>... and my daughter has also moved out of the

house... (She and a bunch of her girlfriends just drove from SF down

to San Diego and back..so I guess she has inherited the love for the

road from her dear old dad.)

Well... I guess that's enough blabbering for the moment...

C. W. McCall had several "road" songs, such as:

Four Wheel Cowboy

Wolf Creek Pass

Old Home Filler-up an' Keep On A-Truckin' Cafe

Long Lonesome Road

Old 30

Tho Four Wheel Cowboy is more about getting away from the cops until they

caught up with him after he went "thru the cornfields where the mary-juana

grows" and he wound up "with a rig that'll never fail, got a CJ-5 sittin' out

back of the jail!!"

Robert Mitchum recorded a great road song in "Thunder Road" and of course we

have to include Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen (is that right) with

their "Hot Rod Lincoln".

There are so many road songs out there - both obscure and well known that

you could put them on a CD and never hear the same song twice (except maybe by

different artists) driving from New York to LA (of course part of it on old

66). Many of them are to be found on a CD put out by Car and Driver called

"Greatest Car Songs And Other Lost Treasures Of The Road". These include:

Chuck Berry - No Particular Place To Go

Canned Heat - On The Road Again

Howlin' Wolf - Highway 49

Jackie Brentson & His Delta Cats - Rocket 88

Beach Boys - Little Deuce Coupe

- 409

- Shut Down

Robert Mitchum - Ballad of Thunder Road

Jimmy Dolan - Hot Rod Race

Ronny & the Daytonas - Little G. T. O.

Jan & Dean - Dead Man's Curve

- Drag City

Asleep At The Wheel - (Get Your Kicks On) Route 66

and the aforementioned

Commander Cody & HIs Lost Planet Airmen - Hot Rod Lincoln

Yes, many of these are familiar to the baby boomers who grew up during the

era these songs were popular and many are perhaps more memorable as hot rod

songs, rather than road songs. But they still evoke memories of an era we grew

up in and they apply to either Saturday nights at the local hambuger drive-in

with your buddies struttin' for the girls or out on the open road.

So sing along with the greats and enjoy.

Yak because it was used in the beginning of "The Great Outdoors"

when John Candy's character and his family were road trippin' to

their vacation destination...and Mess Around because of a classic

As we get older, my better half and I find ourselves listening to

less music when cruisin'. (Prefer the wind noise through an open

roof. I know - - weird.) The Monte has an awesome stereo system,

though. Haven't ever activated the satellite radio thing. But in

the spirit of this thread we sometimes cruise to CDs by:

Willie Nelson (her second-favorite old guy)

ZZ Top

Beach Boys

Neil Young

Gretchen Wilson

Eagles

Simon & Garfunkle

Elvis

anyone else of interest at the moment

I have this dream...a long stretch of highway in a rag top with

Golden Earring's "Radar Love" cranked on the box.

You know you're REALLY getting older when you never heard of half the

songs/artists people have listed are!!!!!!!!! And I mean the ones who, I

think, came along after 1970, 1975.

But on the other hand I turned the radio off after 1965.

the spirit of this thread we sometimes cruise to CDs by:

Willie Nelson (her second-favorite old guy)

ZZ Top

Beach Boys

Neil Young

Gretchen Wilson

Eagles

Simon & Garfunkle

Elvis

anyone else of interest at the moment

Jim:

The quickest legal way I can think of to get this songs is to download

a free iTunes program from Apple and start buying the songs one by one

for 99 cents apiece. Broadband connection is recommended.

> Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Road Trip Songs - what do you listen to?

>

>

> I noticed that RoadDog created a database of Road Songs, and

> recently the lyrics to Convoy were posted; combined with my fun of

> creating playlists on my MP3 player for the past 5 or so months, I

> thought it would be fun to start a thread about your favorite road

> trippin' music.

>

> I have both Route 66 and general Road Trip playlists.

> Yak because it was used in the beginning of "The Great Outdoors"

> when John Candy's character and his family were road trippin' to
