Rita,

Hi. I'll try to answer both your questions. With regard to question #1--you can

do a search when you are at the top of the message page. I just did a search

for Washington by typing in the same--and hitting the search button. You'll get

the messages with that word in them.

Regarding your second question, yes, we (the publishers) started the

American Road yahoo group. (We also are people who love to travel the US

and wanted to share our experiences!). We couldn't have started the yahoo

group without the assistance of Pat and Jennifer Bremer--the group hosts. A

BIG THANK YOU to both of them!

Hope this answers your questions.

I was just in Boston a few months ago for the Preserving Historic

Roads Conference. I didn't get a LOT of time to walk around and

enjoy it, but it is a pedestrian friendly city, with plenty of

history. Make certain that you follow the Freedom Trail. Allow at

least a day for it, but you can do it much quicker without really

seeing much. Plan on lunch at the market by Fanueil Hall. Plenty

of food there.

Unfortunately, that's about the only places that I got to enjoy this

last trip. You can head to http://www.boston.com/travel/boston/ for

more information on that city, though.

Unlike the newest eGroup members and potential subscribers, I joined in the

reverse sequence. Even though I've been "connected" for a long time, I

equated online groups with twittering juveniles in chat rooms and completely

avoided them. I learned of the American Road magazine through other

publications and immediately subscribed to what sounded like the magazine I

had been waiting for. This was before the first issue was anywhere near the

printers. When that first issue arrived, I was surprised to see that it

contained some "letters to the editor". How was this possible for a brand

new publication? They were "letters" from this very group whose birth

preceded that first issue by several months. So I looked into it and decided

to join. My view on online groups has changed and I now belong to several

(probably too many) of them. I've enjoyed every issue of the magazine and

almost every message to this group. I've met some group members and intend

to meet more. Maybe not all 1000 but you never know. Kudos to the Repps, the

Bremers, and all the other Mock Turtles.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Denny,

I remember being asked to provide a letter to the editor for that first issue.

American Road certainly fills a need for us inveterate roadies that wasn't

around until that first issue, and I offer my thanks to everyone who has

anything to do with the magazine. It's a great read.

Also, like you, I belong to about 20 other online groups and spend quite a few

minutes every day reading the posts. I truly believe it's time well spent.

Besides, I'd just be doing something else less worthwhile if I didn't have the

posts to read.

Mike

I agree with Mike - I belong to several road

egroups, as well as several having to do with Hudson

automobiles.

I've made several friends, even gotten to meet one

or two in my travels to Memphis every year and I also

have learned a lot.

I'm a charter subscriber to American Road - tho not

usually a magazine subscriber (American Road and

Smithsonian being about it - other than the great

publication, the White Triangle News, that comes with

my Hudson Club membership.

Many, many thanks to the staff at American Road -

and to the other roadies, especially those with

pictures and tales of old 66. While, over 50 years

since my good friend and I drove it, things on Rt 66

have changed beyond my memory to recognize I do get a

glimmer now and again.

Safe and Happy Travels.

Is the Casselman Inn near the Penn Alps Restaurant on old

40 near Grantsville, MD, Bob? Try it sometime, too. Good

food and a nice little store complete with milled grains,

regionally produced art, etc.

I am new to American Road and joined this list server mostly because

of the name. I am affiliated with a National, All American Road, the

Volcanic Legacy All American Road in northern California and southern

Oregon. Supporters of the VLAAR are very interested in partnerships

that result in promotion and enhancement of the many assets that we

enjoy in far-northern California and southern Oregon.

Has American Road ever considered doing a piece on traveling

nationally designated, All American Roads, and specifically the

Volcanic Legacy All American Road?

There is a place in southern Indiana about 30 minutes west off I-65

and the Columbus exit #68,in Brown county, called Story. The Story Inn,

serves incredible meals! It's a beautiful drive thru the Brown Hills!

Also in Madison,IN on US 421 and the Ohio River

there is the Historic Broadway Hotel and their restaurant there is

excellent.

For more info www.storyinn.com and www.historicbroadwayhotel.com

For those in the New Mexico area,in Socorro,NM visit the Val Verde

Hotel and the Val Verde Steakhouse(YUMMMY). It was the place to go in

New Mexico at the turn of the last century. It was

re opened a few years ago and has a marvelous restaurant.

We recently stayed at the Wigwams in Holbrook and in Rialto. Both were great. I

asked before we went about conditions and I can now report both are fine.

In Holbrook, some of the original lamps are still in use, which was fun.

Everything was clean and nice. We ate at Joe and Angie's for breakfast. If you

get a chance to have the apple chimichanga... oh my gosh... don't miss it...

it's like a fried apple pie that's 10 times better than any fried apple pie

you've ever had. Anyway, I really recommend the Wigwam in Holbrook. I stayed

there on my way back, too. And, Holbrook is so close to the Petrified Forest -

one of my favorite stops on the whole trip. I love rocks!

We also stayed at the Wigwam in Rialto, CA. I know there has been some

discussion that the neighborhood was bad. Frankly, I didn't see that. The

neighborhood is "urban" but not bad. There's one adult bookstore within a few

blocks, but there's one within a few blocks on my house in the little

midwestern town I live in and I live in a "good" area - so - there you go. It

was "urban" and not bad at all. The Wigwam facility is very, very nice. Each has

been freshly painted, the grounds are lovely, the pool is functional although we

didn't use it, and the people who are running it are very attentive. We were

only there one night but I would have been very happy there for an extended

period of time. The rooms also had little fridges, which is a nice touch.

I will be putting pix of both up on my website eventually. I just haven't gotten

around to it. But I took pix of the grounds and the individual rooms in which I

stayed so you can see for yourself. A great use of digital cameras.

A number of roadies are gathering at the Rialto Wigwam on Sept 14 for

STRICT is one thing--there is nothing wrong with strict enforcement

and strong prosecution of DWI and red light laws.

But impounding cars without due process goes beyond STRICT. This

ventures into the area of POLICE STATE. Let's all go back to the U.S.

Constitution and remember why the founders thought that separation of

powers was a good idea. The Police, who arrest suspects, serve an

We would love a few fictional short stories involving the theme of American

Roads incorporated into a mainstream genre such as Adventure, Mystery, Thriller,

Suspense, Science Fiction, Historical etc., and here's a special offer for

members...

...we have some spare space available for short stories in our forthcoming

series of paperback books...

This is a wonderful opportunity for aspiring authors to showcase their literary

talents in a quality printed paperback book.

This was never intended to be a competition as such but we have just recently

decided to offer a US$1,000 prize for the best story.

For more detailed information on Midici Books and this opportunity, you are

welcome to check out the website, www.midicibooks.net …it explains

everything.

If you also have friends who like writing stories, perhaps you could let them

know as well, the offer is open to everyone...

There is no fee to have a story included in Book #1, we just hope that authors

support us by purchasing a few of the books in which their story appears, they

will make wonderful gifts for family and friends, please also check out Q. 14 on

FAQ's for an extra special opportunity.

A few other notes. Yes, the METRA weekend pass is definitely the way to go.

Also, the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority now accepts E-ZPASS in

addition to their own I-Passes. They became interoperable this past

summer. The Chicago Skyway (I-90, toll $2.50) also accepts

I-Pass/E-ZPASS, but not the Indiana Toll Road (They're planning on

coming on line with that in the next year or so).

Whenever I go into downtown Chicago, I'll park at the Cumberland Av

park-and-ride ramp along the Kennedy Expressway (I-90), it costs $1.75

for the day, and CTA it downtown. I may be reconsidering that with the

Tollway cash toll increase, but even with it, that may still be the best

way for me to go, at least on weekdays.

BTW, although it is not marked as such (yet), Michigan Av through

downtown Chicago is also the routing of the Yellowstone Trail. The

Lincoln Highway passes through the south and west suburbs and is a well

marked, kewl drive in Illinois.

Sad to say, I don't recall those map puzzles. However, they still

exist and can be found on occasion in "Games" magazine. And they

*are* hard:)

I remember those little map puzzles in the Saturday Evening Post - and

you're right, they weren't easy to figure out.

Maybe the reason being people didn't travel around like they do today.

Today it's simply toss the kids in the back seat, get the family savings out of

the bank, put the luggage wherever and head for that vacation destination. 50,

60 years ago a road trip took the planning of an expedition to Mt. Everest.

We used to drive out to the Dayton, Ohio, area to visit friends and

relatives back in the late 40's, early 50's. Dad would start planning weeks in

advance - talking with long haul truck drivers (not many of those back the, but

some) about road conditions, etc; thumbing thru the AAA road guides; taking the

car (he even broke down, in 1949, and bought a new car - a 1937 Chrysler Royale

6 cylinder sedan) in for a total checkup. Tho that was many, many years ago I

can still remember the excitement of the trip - something new around every turn.

Not like today when it's literally the same town after town (of course on the

interstate you miss the towns), mile after mile - Mickey D's, Wendy's, BK at

every stop.

Yeah, I remember those little circles in the SEP. Miss those magazines,

Saturday Evening Post, Life, etc, too.

Speaking of "What State?"

Is anyone besides me (I'm 58) old enough to remember those map puzzles in the

Saturday Evening Post? For the younger folks, the SEP was a weekly magazine,

NOT a newspaper. It's best known as the venue for Norman Rockwell, whose art

decorated many covers of the magazine.

The map puzzles consisted of little circles lifted from road maps. There

would generally be one town name visible and maybe part of another. Plus some

numbered highways and maybe a river or something. You had to figure out what

state

it was in.

Those suckers were HARD.

Chet, those are some great lyrics that pretty well sum up the whole

Route 66 thing, or any old road for that matter. Would you mind if

I used it in my 7th grade classes when we study Route 66?

I remember meeting you at Tom Teague's Finding 66 seminar back in

September 2002. Sure enjoyed our talk at the Globe.

Guest Chet Nichols II

Hey RoadDog.....Hooowww-dee!

Hey, I write to share....so, please share the lyrics to the song "The Mother

Road" with your class. Too bad I'm not close by or I'd love to come and sing

the songs in person.

Below, I will also paste two other songs that were directly inspired by

Route 66.....The first is, "The Last Riders On Route 66"....and the second

is "Modern Progress".....which is the title tune to my CD dedicated to Route

66......enjoy.

Also, thanks for the kind words.

My Best,

Chet Nichols

PS I'll also attach all three songs as word.docs so you can just print them

out, if needed.

Verse 1

It was the Spring of ?67

When this story starts

It?s about two boys who hit the road

With their thumbs and their hearts

California was calling them

The blue skies and the beach

Were waiting down America?s Main Street

They were right there in their reach

And they heard Will Roger?s highway

Was about to change its name

To another nameless freeway

They knew they?d never get the chance again

CHORUS

They were the last riders on route 66

Hitchin? and crusin? and grooving ? on the Mother Road

They were the last riders on route 66

They were livin? and laughin? and lovin? on the Mother Road

Verse 2

They saw lots of paintings of Elvis

Using neon paint against black velvet

Blacktop ham and eggs and red corvettes

Along that 4-lane amusement park

The road was lined with strange landmarks

And desert Deco towns shining thru the dark

They learned about love on the highway

And in a rockin? little beach hotel

By the time they got back to Oklahoma

Lord, they had some stories to tell

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE

Every ride that picked them up

Was like changing a TV channel

They met hippies and hustlers and soldiers and truckers

And quite a few dangerous damsels

And the jackalopes in Arizona

Where just the right size to ride

Out where the tee-pee motels

Meet the desert sky

REPEAT CHORUS....end

VERSE 1.

Off in the distance and thru the mist

The towers beam the messages no one can resist

And along the lazy river where we used to play

Sits a gambling boat

They?ve built more storage lockers and more motels

?Cause no one is at home any more to ring the dinner bell

And the topsoil of dreams is being carried away

Flowing downstream

CHORUS

Ooo, that?s modern progress

But, down below the haze

The population?s in a daze

Ooo,,Ooo, that?s modern progress

Oh, but, Lord, when will we ever learn

VERSE 2.

Out on the hills the rigs nod up and down

To squeeze the oil that?s buried below the Texas towns

They fuel the mini power plants that drive us to the grave

Thru the smoky air

And the semis on the interstate slide in and out of lanes

Moving dreams to marketplace lit up like circus trains

Because someone?s found a way to stuff 10 pounds of scrap

Into a two pound bag

Repeat CHORUS

BRIDGE

Out on the desert red lights climb the grade

They?re all fighting for the parking spot that has a little shade

Everyone?s in a hurry to be leading the parade

To the shopping malls, to get the latest upgrade

Repeat CHORUS

To take it slow, give a little slack

Give one another what we want given back

When will we ever learn

When will we ever

Oh, will we ever learn
