A fixture along US 40 on Indianapolis' far eastside for more than 50 years will

go by the wayside this summer to make room for a "much needed" strip mall.

The Drake Motel is one of the last motels along 40 in Indianapolis that serves

as a reminder of what was once a major cross country route. Like many of the

motels in the area, it was doomed as soon as Interstate 70 opened 2 miles to the

north in the 1960's. For many years, the Drake's "No Vacancy" sign has been lit,

as it has served only weekly and monthly rentals. There is (or was) a Drake

Motel on 40 in Springfield, OH that used the same sign as the one in

Indianapolis.

Well, if we can't save these places - which to us

are "historical", but to others is money - at least we

can save the photos to enjoy and remember the "Golden

Howdy folks,

I just wanted to brag about the awesome birthday present I just got from the

lovely and talented Shellee Graham of St. Louis (aka my main squeeze). As some

of you know, I have recently finished construction of a cabin in my back yard,

built in the tradition of vintage motels. I just posted this photo:

I had planned (in a few years) to have a neon sign made to hang in the window.

Well, I got one a lot sooner than I thought! Check it out.

I haven't hung it yet (have to have some glass work done), but it will hang on

the inside the window on the front of the cabin.

Thank you Shellee Gee!

Regards,

Congratulations, Jim! (And Happy Birthday.) It's beautiful, Shellee. And

Route 66 in that area can use another good motel, too. :)

Denny,

I believe I probably have one of the same "Paved Road Atlas of the United

States" you have, except mine was distributed by the Milwaukee Journal Tour

Club. It was also compiled by the George F. Cram Company of Indianapolis. Mine

has no copyright dates on it either but also has the mixture of the pole marker

legend as well as the "correct for the times" federal road numbers. The cover

of mine is 8 X 11 3/4 inches but immediately opens to 15 3/4 X 11 inches, and

shows "logs of transcontinental federal highways" including the incorrectly

listed Highway 60 from Chicago to Los Angeles.

Does this sound like what you have?

Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Numbers Game - atlas question.

Jim Ross's excellent article on the birth of nationwide highway numbering

provided both information and a chance to ask about an atlas in my

possession. This certainly qualifies as a Mike Ward question but maybe some

others have comments, too. There are no dates on the atlas and only a couple

of names. The front and back covers indicate that it was given away by the

Kansas City Journal-Post. I believe that I've seen photos of similar looking

atlases from Rand McNally. Undated copyright notices refer to the George F

Cram Company of Indianapolis.

Now the good part. Maps are "With New Federal Numbering System" plus the

"Pole Markers" for 32 "Named Highways" are shown. The route from Chicago to

L.A. carries the "Federal Road Number" 60 and "Federal Road Number" 62 goes

through Kentucky. Clearly, the atlas comes from around 1925-26 and shows

that the switch from names to numbers did not occur instantly. Can it be

dated even more precisely? Were these "mixed-mode" maps common?

The atlas is a great "time capsule" with a glimpse of the name to number

transition and the general state of roads (paved roads are marked and there

aren't many between Kansas City & California) and laws (Mississippi required

1 red tail light, over the line you needed both red & white in Louisiana,

but either red or yellow was alright in Texas).

HAPPY BIRTHDAYJIM,

Good lookin' sign. Tell Shellee she did good...LOL. I'm sure you

already have. I like the cabin too. Do you have the inside decorated yet? I'd

like to see pics of that too. I have a 12x20 building out back, that started

out to be storage for my motorcycles, and lawnmowers. Now, it's ended up

being a bar / motorcycle shop / place to hang some of the junk I've collected

over the years, etc. I like spending time out there. I can work on projects

(I have many), watch satellite TV, or movies, and later...have a drink if I

want to, all in safety of the back yard...LOL. I have it decorated with old

beer lights, licence plates, metal signs, flags etc.

There were a lot of misprintings in those days, a few cities were listed

as being from the next state over.

I have a list from BPR records and one from "American Highways" Vol VI,

No. 2, April 1927:

http://www.us-highways.com/1927us.htm

Compare your list to that one.

Right on, Lulu. '66 actually crosses herself 3 times within a very

short stretch in this area. Going west, almost immediately after

passing through Hooker Cut "new" '66 (Portland cement 4 lane) crosses

the 20's alignment. A left turn here takes you past the Elbow Inn

and across the 1923 steel truss bridge. If you don't take this turn

and continue west up the hill on the 4 lane you cross the 20's

alignment again and this is where the motor court you mention is on

the right side of the highway. That particular alignment crossed

current I-44 and then curved west (the pavement is still there and is

awesome) past an existing truck stop, curved south, and then joined

the 40's '66 alignment again with a right turn (west). This was and

still is a 2 lane alignment. Question to ponder....why was '66 a 4

lane highway for such a short distance and then funneled traffic into

a 2 lane highway? 'Ya gotta love it.

Another sight near Sedalia is the old US 65 alignment north of town. I have

several pictures of this road, I can post them if anybody's interested.

Bob I'm getting the page is no longer there. On bridges, they are

going to be replacing the Hiwassee river bridge in Meigs county,

Tenn. but it seems I read they will keep the old bridge standing. I

was told the bridge was a toll beidge until the bond was payed off

and the house next to the north end was the toll keepers residence.--

Oh really? I thought it was also used by a short-line that provided

local rail freight service. What are the rail-freight customers

doing? Are they just going to abandon the entire line, then?

I made it home from Tulsa last night but too late to say so. Also too late

to finish the page for the last day. The whole outing is at

http://www.dennygibson.com/rt66fest04 with everything in Tulsa on days 2, 3,

& 4.

What a wonderful event and I want to add my thanks to Laurel, David & Mary

Lou, and Mike plus all the others who put this thing together. I had a great

time.

Hi everyone,

I kinda found ya by accident but I'm glad that I did. I have traveled

66 several times. The first time was in I was about 6 years old

(1961) with my family. Took a 3 week road trip in 1992 and a shorter

trips in 94 and again in 96. Just did Illinois in 99. Traveled the

route through Carlinville (Illinois 4) and found the old brick

sections. In 94 and again in 2001 was at the base of La Bajada (New

Mexico) wishing I

had 4 wheel drive. I'll try and post some photos in the near future

if anyone is interested. Remnants of the past are vanishing rapidly.

Santo Domingo trading post burned down a few years ago as did Pop

Hick's.

When ever I have time I try and explore old

highways. I've taken 41 from Chicago to Copper Harbor Mich. Next big

road trip will be 61 to New Orleans. And advice on where to find old

maps to follow the old two lane sections?

Allen,

Welcome aboard! It sounds like you're quite the diverse two-lane warrior,

which American Road is based on. Nice to see you mention Copper Harbor, MI. I

was there in '85 with my parents on a week long Great Lakes road trip. That trip

really is what got me going (as a mere 17 year old) on motels, cafes, and two

lanes. It doesn't get much better than a drive on the Brockway Mountatin Drive,

does it?

SIDE NOTE: For those out of the know, Copper Harbor is at the northern terminus

of US 41 in the extreme U.P. of Michigan, darting out into Lake Superior. Here's

a link to some pics: http://community.webshots.com/album/51759342atAcIq

As for old maps, you can try some antique shops, flea markets, and the like. But

your best bet might be eBay.

We look forward to you swapping your road trip stories with us!

Regards,
