There is the Old 61 that I remember from the mid-50's - and the new one today that seems to by-pass most of the towns. I don't know when they built the new one. I'm trying to think - it seems to me that the old highway 60 of years ago ran thru a stretch of woods, and was quite narrow, on the MS/TN state line. Rather a good place, as I recall, for the 'revenooer's' to set up road blocks. I'm planning on making a run down to Clarksdale in January - plan on using the old road, at least in one direction, as much as possible. On the maps it appears to be intact all the way. Some of the members of our firm are very involved with preservation and work with the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana. One of the features in the latest issue of American Road under Tunnel Vision is about Fairmount High School, James Dean's alma mater (as well as Jim Davis, creator of Garfield). Guest Chris Posted February 11, 2005 Report Share Posted February 11, 2005 Fire damages Hightstown Diner Sunday, November 14, 2004 HIGHTSTOWN, NJ - The roof of the Hightstown Diner caught fire last night causing a substantial amount of structural damage to the landmark eatery. The apparent cause of the blaze was grease in the kitchen area that had splashed up into the duct work of the building and later ignited, officials said. The fire then built between the ceiling and the roof, where it created a large amount of smoke. "The location of the fire made it difficult for us," said Hightstown Fire Chief John Archer. "We had to cut through a lot of material and parts of the roof to actually get to the fire." Units from the Hightstown Fire Department, two East Windsor companies, Washington Township, Millstone and Cranbury responded to the blaze at 151 Mercer St. The call was initially received at 7 p.m. and the fire was brought under control in 30 to 40 minutes, Archer said. "We spent quite a while chasing hot spots under the roof after we got everything under control," Archer said. "That presented the most difficulty." Two firefighters sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene, Archer said. The diners were evacuated safely and none were injured. In fact (I swear I am not lying....I am just related to half that town), my uncle is a diver and has stories upon stories about when they had to go in and search for bodies that have jumped off of the Mackinac Bridge. He is the same one who painted the Mystery Spot? signs. I know the painting gig he does out of his home in his shop....as far the diving career, not sure if it's a local organization, or governmental or what. Guest jenniferrt66 Posted February 11, 2005 Report Share Posted February 11, 2005 I saw this interesting article about the safety of two lane roads by Dateline NBC and thought I'd share it here. http://www.msnbc.com/news/748422.asp On a Route 66 Yahoo group, there was a recent discussion about safety of interstates vs. two lane roads. I agree that Interstates have definite safety features over two lane roads (especially after reading this article). However, Interstates are by far 100% "safe." No matter how many safety features you design into any roads, it seems there are many more cars out there, and the people driving them are going faster and more reckless. I am, admittedly, not speaking factually or statistically – just an observation. It just seems like when you build straighter, "safer" roads, some people see that as an excuse to drive faster, thus negating the safety benefits trying to be achieved. In a related note, I don't know if anyone read about this – a semi truck driver was on U.S. 6 in northern Indiana and decided he needed to change his clothes. He'd probably been on the road for a long time, so that was probably a fairly typical thing to do. I would hope, however, that most drivers PULL OVER before they do this!! I guess this mindless fool didn't want to lose any time, and put his truck on cruise control anticipating a straight road ahead...wrong! There was a curve in the road and his truck flipped over. Guest jenniferrt66 Posted February 11, 2005 Report Share Posted February 11, 2005 I was curious when I read your post about My Tinman Diner, so I went to read the article in the latest issue; or, rather, the latest issue in my possession. I hadn't received the most current yet, so I went crazy looking in the previous issue! Now that I have the correct issue in hand, and read the article, I was even more curious!! Forgive me, it's my nature to make sense of things! The article in AR was primarily about the most recent person to run My Tinman, Barbara Lind and did indicate that she "never owned the diner's physical structure." I assumed Barbara rented it. In further discussing the diner's future after a devastating fire, it never did mention who the owner is/was, or what happened to Barbara (other than that she "was left out in the cold."). The article posted from the Cape Cod Times, addressed my curiosity about the owner of the diner, Claire Bergeron. I'm glad to know the diner will be restored to its former glory! However, this article doesn't mention anything about Barbara or what happened to her. Again, I'm always curious about things so I decided to investigate and I found another article about My Tinman Diner which gives a little more detail about the ownership, who ran it (Bergeron ran it herself at one point, but subsequently rented it to others to run), and briefly explains what happened to Barbara Lind. http://www.msnbc.com/local/CCT/charreddiner7.asp?0LA=aje9n I expect that when I get back to Connecticut to visit my family, that I'll take some time to get up to Cape Cod and visit Barbara's new restaurant, as well as Claire's. Some day when I do get back to the east coast, I'd like to visit there when it's complete. I went to college in Providence (majored in culinary arts at Johnson & Wales). I'm happy to know where Barbara has gone. Robert O. Williams, the author who wrote the Tinman piece for AR, said he couldn't find her. Looks like he didn't look hard enough! That said, immediately after the issue started hitting mailboxes, we received a call here at the main office from Dan Zilka of the American Diner Museum. He, too, had My Tinman comments to make. The great thing about all of this is that AR will be using Mr. Zilka as a diner touchstone from this point forward. In fact, he just snail-mailed us a "My Tinman update" to be used in our Tunnel Vision section of Issue #4. Roadtrips aren't the same on the interstate--don't get a feel for the land and the people. The freeways have taken the adventure and romance out of automobile travel just as jet airliners contributed to the demise of the passenger train. You are only about 10-15 miles from the US 50 corridor, Vikram. I did some of the drive this past summer....it is pretty heavily congested from DC until you cross the Bay Bridge at Annapolis. That 50 or so miles could easily turn into a two hour + trip. I have been on most of 50 down to the area DON'T do it on a Holiday weekend Vikram, you may sit at stop lights for miles on end. But Dorothy is right....a lot of beauty on the Eastern Shore (east of Annapolis) and it is more lightly travelled in the winter once you cross the bridge. Take the trip if you get the opportunity. Hey, rent a motel room in Ocean City or south of there and drive back the next day. Good overnight trip....kind of long for a day trip. The Goffs Schoolhouse was constructed in 1914 and served the region until 1937, at which time the present school was built in Essex and the Goffs School abandoned. It is one of the few remaining structures in Goffs located on the original 1926 alignment of U. S. Highway 66. The school served the needs of families of railroaders, highway people, miners, and ranchers. The Schoolhouse was restored to its 1914 configuration by the Association in 1998. Some work is ongoing, but it is now fitted out with displays of artwork and artifacts depicting the cultural history of the Mojave Desert. There are many artifacts (old vehicles, mining machinery, and much more) on the adjacent grounds. To facilitate public visitation, the Association has published a "Guide to the Goffs Cultural Center" booklet for the convenience of visitors which is keyed to 40 numbered stations inside the Schoolhouse and about 100 numbered pegs around the grounds. With the aid of this interpretive booklet, visitors can spend several hours enjoying the displays on a self-guided basis. Picnic areas are available for visitors. On October 11, 2001, the Goffs Schoolhouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U. S. Department of the Interior. It is one of the few buildings along old U. S. Highway 66 in California and the only one-room schoolhouse in all of southern California on that prestigious national register. The Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Association was formed as a nonprofit tax-exempt corporation in 1993 with a mission to: "Research and educate the public with the natural and cultural history of the Mojave Desert regions through operation of a regional research center including a library and archives, restoration of historic buildings, interpretation of backcountry trails, publication of educational guide books and historical monographs and periodicals in concert with government agencies and people of good faith everywhere." The Mojave Desert Archives, situated in buildings adjacent to the Goffs Schoolhouse, embraces more than 6,000 volumes pertaining to the history of the Desert west, more than 700 taped oral history interviews conducted with desert "old-timers" with firsthand knowledge, more then 40,000 historical photographs of the Desert west, 4,000 historic maps, and much more. These materials are in special collections that are made available with advance arrangement to qualified students and writers doing in-depth research on the Mojave Desert. The Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Association is a nonprofit tax-exempt corporation. No charge is made for admission to the Schoolhouse and adjacent property, donations are welcome. To get there. From the direction of Barstow take I-40 east about 110 miles to a point one mile east of Fenner Rest Stop and exit the Interstate where a sign says "Goffs Road." Turn left under the freeway bridge and follow blacktop Goffs Road for 11 miles to Goffs. From Needles or Las Vegas Area take U.S. Highway 95 south (from Searchlight) or north (from I-40 up out of Needles) to the point where 95 crosses the main line of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. Turn west on Goffs Road (south of the tracks) and travel 14 miles to Goffs. Monroe County is one of a handful of Tennessee counties with numbered county roads. We were driving down one of them (I can't recall the number, let's say it was Monroe 220) when we came upon a short dead-end spur bearing the number 220.1. Now, I can't help but wondering if anyone else has ever seen a road of any kind designated with a decimal number.
