Seems to me I've seen that somewhere else - maybe

Ohio, maybe somewhere in New England. Can't remeber

off-hand at the moment.

Yeah, TN IS a great place to go cruising on the back

roads during a holiday season in the winter. Here in

Memphis today it's absolutely beautiful outside - sun

shining, warm. Sure do beat New England by a country

mile.

Happy Holidays everybody

Hudsonly,

It's a Pixar film. It's one of the most successful studios in

Hello Ken,

Thanks for the recommendations. We will be arriving in OKC Friday

afternoon, Jan 21st. We will not pass thru Lawton, but rather come direct

from Dallas on I-35.

>What day and time you will arrive, where you are staying and have you made

any appointments with your legislative leaders staffs?

Is there a master schedule somewhere for these appointments that are already

set up? It's hard to make an appointment if we don't know if it's going to

conflict with another one that's already been set. What times and dates have you

set up meetings with other people?

I know it sounds good to have each of us call our congressmen and set up

appointments to meet with them, but that smells like a recipe for disaster.

Better

plan: Assign one person to be the point man for this. Give him the master

schedule for all the meetings that are already set. Then have everybody contact

their congressmen and get a phone number the point man can call to set up an

appointment for our delegation to meet with that representative. Point man

should of course drop the constituent's name during the conversation to make

sure

the representative understands that this is going to be worth his time.

This way, we have one person with one schedule setting up all the

appointments and making sure there are no scheduling conflicts. This will allow

all of us

to go, en masse, to each office instead of scattering our shot ... yet we'll

still have the advantage of making sure our congressmen are being lobbied by

the people who actually vote in their districts and not just a bunch of

strangers with some cause they've never heard of. Then when we go visit Jim's

congressman, Jim is the lead talker, and the rest of us are there to show

solidarity

and maybe throw in our two cents' worth if the congressman has questions Jim

can't answer. When we go visit Crocodile's congressman, we all show up, but

Crocodile is the lead talker. When we visit Guy's congressman, Guy is the lead

talker. You get the idea. This way, we've got our congressional representatives

being lobbied *primarily* by their own constituents, but nobody has to go it

alone, and we all get the benefit of the strength-in-numbers thing.

Does that make sense?

I would also personally like to see a detailed itinerary for the entire trip

so I can plan for it.

The plans have already changed two or three times since we first started

talking about this, and I have had to rearrange my work schedule based on things

I

thought were going to happen and later found out weren't.

Before I buy a plane ticket, I need to know what time and day everybody is

supposed to arrive in D.C., how many changes of clothes and what types of

outfits I should bring (I realize that's a very "girly" sort of concern, but I

already bristle at the idea of security schmucks pawing through my suitcase and

copping free feels as I go through the checkpoints, and I would like to

streamline this process as much as possible) and how much cash I need to have on

hand

for stuff like cab rides, meals (read: are we eating upscale, diner, or Mickey

D's, and how many of each sort of meal are we having?) drinks, entertainment

(are we wining and dining the politicians, hanging out in a bar somewhere, or

just sitting in our rooms watching TV?) and whatever else this trip is going to

involve.

I'm sorry to be so anal about this, but as hard as I try, I simply am not a

Type B personality and cannot kick back and let it all hang out and wait to see

what happens next. My schedule and my finances are both too tight to allow me

the luxury of last-minute flexibility.

I need details before I make any more plans for this trip.

Thanks,

Emily

Well folks we have made a major change to our plans to go to DC. I will not

be driving the motor home and doing a caravan.

Plans are now to fly into DC although those that want to drive can still do

so. So how you are getting there is your decision. I do need to know who is

Sorry folks I had to leave for an appointment and thought that I had saved

this to the 'draft' file.

So I will continue with the text;

What day and time you will arrive, where you are staying and have you made

any appointments with your legislative leaders staffs? The meetings with the

Department of Interior and National Parks Service have been set. As well as

with the staffs that I am already working with for Congressman Jerry Lewis

and Joe Baca.

Sorry for this change of plans and for any inconvenience it causes. Please

do not let this keep you form joining us for this very important event.

Okay Gang,

Here's a new one on me. I met with a fellow

today who used to travel the Old Road back in the 60's.

He told me a story that went like this....."KIngman, AZ

was very concerned about the interstate bye-passing the

town, because it had seen the hardship it was causing

other towns along the road. So, it changed it's name

to Poke-A-Dot City and painted dots on everything.

Either my laeg has been successfully pulled....or....is there any truth to this

malicious tale?

Emily,

You're suggestions aren't anal. In fact, I feel the same way about all the

points you've made. Without some sort of further organization, it's very

difficult to plan for, to prepare for, to budget for, and have a "lasting

impression" itinerary that will make a success of this trip. In fact, you

brought up cab fares...gee, I never thought of budgeting that!

I'm still trying to figure out if this trip is even financially feasible for

some.

There are several concrete sections of the original alignment of US 40

west of Indy that are driveable. Also, west of Terre Haute you can

plainly see the brick paving of the original alignment. Some sections

are still used for access to driveways.

Also, and I forgot to mention, that you can still drive the original

Greetings all! It was brought to my attention by a higher authority

that I hadn't been seen in a while. After looking back through the

archives, he's right!

Mrs. Moderator & I had a very productive trip out west over New

Year's weekend. A good friend of mine unearthed some vintage roadtrip

pictures from the late 1940's that his parents had taken with his

grandparents. My main goal was to hunt down a certain Mobil station

in Adrian, TX on Route 66. After a little bit of detective work, we

found the station in question. Here's a link on our website from that

weekend's trip: http://roadtripmemories.com/trips/oktx2005.htm

Be sure to click on the link next to the Adrian gas station pic for

another "Time Frame", as I like to call them.

We've both got some roadtrips planned for 2005, some solo, others

joint. We'll be leading a tour of Corvairs in May on a weekend trip

along Route 66 in Illinois. Then I'll be going solo out west to Cedar

Rapids, Iowa for a regional Corvair convention in late June, likely

picking up some of the Lincoln Highway along the way. Then in October

I'm heading up another Corvair trip to Ypsilanti, Michigan to visit

the National Corvair Museum, located within the Ypsilanti Automotive

Heritage Museum. There'll be plenty of spur of the moment trips in

between. Of course, there'll be "scouting" trips for the Illinois 66

trip and for the Ypsilanti trip that'll take place prior to the

actual trips. Nothing better than a roadtrip to plan for another

roadtrip, eh?

Happy Corvairing!

Dave Said: When was the last time you as in any of you drove

on some actual pavement from the 1920s, I would

like to hear the particulars.

Dave, There's still quite a network of one-lane concrete slab roads around

Corsicana..most, if not all, poured in the twenties!

One section passes a couple of blocks behind my studio. Some has been wedded to

(bad) asphalt in the city limits, while most of the county sections are still

only one lane of pavement with accompanying dirt/gravel, or even just a narrow,

grassy shoulder.

All of these slabs are on the lane leading into Corsicana (for the farmers to

bring in their loads of produce?)

I've been photographing and documenting them..maybe for an American Road article

some day.

Ahhh, I know what the problem was. We disabled the Polls feature last

fall after our daily "Bring Back Route 66" pollster was adding a poll

daily. (Note: Said pollster left our group months ago). So we're good

to go! I've enabled everyone to use the poll.

these folks made.

It shows there are a lot of great people in this old

world, despite what the media would have you beleive.
