Hello,

Barbara Lind did lease the diner from its owner for several years.

The last we heard about Barbara was that she has recently closed her

latest restaurant venture. As for the American Diner Museums location

and status, you can read about it at the following URL.

We continue to work with our Heritage Harbor Museum partners

Thank You

I've never seen a decimal designation on a public road. Here in California we do

have something almost as strange. In Madera County, a flat farming county, the

N-S roads and the E-W avenues are numbered with the even miles having whole

numbers and the 1/2 miles having fractions. Such as Avenue 7 1/2, Road 16 1/2.

Ave 18 1/2 has its own Freeway ramps on CA 99

My name is Toshio Koshimizu. I'm living in Yokohama, Japan. I just joined

your e-Group.

We (my wife and I) love driving trip. We had 16 trips since 1966, in USA,

Canada, Australia

and New Zealand. It took two to three weeks each time. I posted photo album

and trip report

(written in Japanese) of these 16 trips on my web site.

I made English Version of my pages of last two trips (Route 66 in Spring and

Atlantic Canada

Dallas-area drive-in opens this week

Area's first new drive-in in years will start showing films on Friday

06:53 AM CST on Wednesday, December 15, 2004

By DAVID FLICK / The Dallas Morning News

Outdoor movie viewing returns to the Dallas area Friday. SpongeBob

SquarePants can now be seen in the open air.

The Galaxy Drive-In will start entertaining moviegoers Friday night. The

outdoor theater, near Garrett, is hoping to attract families with screenings

of films such as The Polar Express and Christmas with the Kranks.

The Galaxy Drive-In, the first outdoor movie theater to be constructed in

the Dallas area in decades, will open its box office at 6 p.m. with the first

film rolling an hour later.

The theater was supposed to open last summer on 10 acres near the Ellis

County town of Garrett but was delayed until the owners could construct a

sewer system that would satisfy code requirements.

"It's still a problem," co-owner Marsha Murray said. "We have a few more

parts coming in, but ready or not, we're going on Friday."

Belying the "passion pit" image of drive-ins, the Galaxy is aiming to reach

the family-oriented market. Its first films will be The Polar Express,

Christmas with the Kranks, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $2 for children older than 5, and free for

children younger than 5. Call 972-875-5505 for more information.

The movies will mark the first drive-in viewing in Dallas since 1998, when

an electrical fire closed the Astro Drive-In in Oak Cliff. The closest

outdoor movie theater was the Brazos Drive-In in Hood County, southwest of

Fort Worth.

Anticipation for the Galaxy opening has been high.

"The phone has been busy since we hooked it up, but after we put a sign that

said 'Open Dec. 17,' it hasn't given us a break," Mrs. Murray said.

What were those strange things you saw on the road and beside it in

Illinois these last several weeks? I have two of the answers. Keep

on reading.

According to the AP on Nov. 23, a man in Springfield, Illinois tried

to elude police on a stolen lawn tractor. He was spotted "speeding"

across a cornfield. When police tried to apprehend him, he made an

attempt to get away. Police officers were able to jog beside him

until making the arrest.

Police described him as a "happy drunk" and his ponytail

was "flopping in the breeze." Unfortunately for him, he violated

his parole so ended up back in prison.

This occurred in the town of Southern View which is south of

Springfield. This is where Rt 66 used to exit the Springfield area

and head south until Lake Springfield was made. Today, you can

check out the new Route 66 Hotel and Convention Center in Southern

View, an old Holiday Inn that has been turned into a roadies

paradise. Room rates are $66 a night for some reason.

Two blocks north of it, you will find the Cozy Dog, a Route

66 "must" since the 40s and serving up great breakfasts and, of

course, the World Famous Cozy Dog.

Across the fourlanes by the hotel, you will find the Curve Inn, an

original Rt 66 Roadhouse, dating from the thirties and a great place

to unwind and get a meal. Perhaps our lawnmower riding fugitive had

been here earlier.

According to the Chicago Tribune of Nov. 30, a man was pulled over

on the Chicago Skyway under the suspicion of driving under the

influence.

He exited his car, ran to the guardrail, and jumped over it. Those

of you who are familiar with the Chicago area know that the Skyway

is elevated. Fortunately, he didn't choose the highest part to make

his escape.

He landed 15 feet below on a sidestreet and was knocked

unconscious. He was taken to the hospital.

Why did these two men do this? I guess it can best be summed up in

John Wayne's immortal words, "At the time, it seemed like the thing

to do."

Hey Scott, if you pick up the 66 in Springfield, Illinois, be sure

to stay at the Route 66 Hotel and Convention Center south of town.

Room rates are $66 a night. You're not going to believe all the 66

memorabilia they've collected. Within walking distance to the north

is Cozy Dogs, a Rt 66 fixture since the 40s. Across the street,

behind the McDonald's, is the Curve Inn, a great old 66 Roadhouse.

Welcome, Toshio! Glad to have you with us. I hope you will fins alot

of good information about U.S. road travel here.

For everyone on the list, do yourselves a favor and visit Toshio's

website. He has done a great job documenting his road trips and has

taken many wonderful photographs. On his Route 66 page, he has a

very cool graphic of a Route 66 postcard morphing from the couple on

the postcard to Toshio and his wife...and Toshio has told me that the

version of Get Your Kicks on Route 66 playing on the site was sung by

George Maharis! Great job!

Be sure to stop in the Route 66 Mother Road Museum located in the historic

Harvey House in Barstow. It's free and well worth the visit anyway. They have

information on stuff to see in the area. Also, like places to check out about

100 miles from the museum can be downloaded from their website under FREE

DOWNLOADS. The handout shows no services at the old Kelso Depot, but has

recently opened. www.route66museum.org or 760-255-1890

There's not much on the 15, but there are some nice things off road; Nipton and

Kelso (railroad ghost towns with a functioning hotel and a grand old station,

respectively)

aren't that far from the Cali borider.

I did a drive along I15 from San Diego, CA to Las Vegas, NV this summer.

There is alot of nothing out there. But I guess if you're going to go as

far as Baker, CA, you might as well see the infamous zzyzx road off of

I15. You don't really need to stop, just to say, "yea I saw it." :)

Wow, now this is just weird, an out-of-state resident bragging on

Missouri highways. I wondered which couple of states were under our

low ranking. If you felt nary a bump, you must be driving a Hummer

across the roads I'm driving a Saturn on! But seriously...

Let me just make a few points in Missouri's political defense. I'm

not saying Michigan's highways aren't worse, but I don't believe

Missouri should be held up as the most convincing argument to bolster

Michigan's case. Missouri is rarely cited as having very good roads

and bridges. This toll proposal is all discussion at this point, and

I'm not arguing in favor of it. Only saying that it's no where near a

done deal. Let's not equate the reported sentiments of some state

politican with the views of the average Missouri voter. Many will

view toll roads as just another scheme to tap their wallets.

As for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch article hypothesizing about a toll

on U.S. 50, that's speculation. A 6-cent gas tax hike imposed in 1992

was promised to pay for four laning 50 from Sedalia to I-44. Voters

know the state overpromised and couldn't deliver, so they'll be wary

of any new plan that costs them more money for what they didn't get

but are still paying for.

> Michigan has no toll roads and only charges for the Mackinaw

> Bridge - which is worth it! Our roads are really bad so we need

> some of that Fed Tax money goin' to MO.

My main point is that Michigan may need help, but I think you're

pickin' on the wrong state. Even though it ranks higher than

Michigan on federal payout, Missouri still gets less than a dollar

for every dollar in federal gas tax it sends to Washington, D.C.

Therefore, both of our states would be better off if the federal fuel

tax was abolished, all that federal bureaucracy laid off, and each of

our states kept its own share of the money generated within its

borders.

Happy travels.

Cosy Dog???? Sounds like a blind date I had one time

Hudsonly,

Alex B

roaddog_rt66 <roaddog_rt66@yahoo.com> wrote: What were those strange

things you saw on the road and beside it in

John Wayne's immortal words, "At the time, it seemed like the thing

to do."

Umm, hate to quibble, but Pixar's not one of the most successful studios

in Hollywood, mainly because it's in Emeryville, California, several

hundred miles to the north. It's a block west of San Pablo Avenue AKA

CA 123, which according to markers on the street was part of the Lincoln

Highway at one point. (See how cleverly I brought my post back on

topic?)

Wow! I have just gone through every photo on your Route 66 trip site.

Brought back tons of memories of my trips on 66. Your site is so well

done and I love the music and the way the opening postcard photo changed

to you and your wife. Can't wait to look at your Eastern Canada site.

Thanks for coming and glad you met friendly and helpful people all along

Sorry for the abrupt change of subject. This question will take us

well north of "The Mother Road". Does anyone know if the old Mullan

Road west of Missoula, Mt. is the actual YT route prior to Hwy 10

being opened? It runs about 15 miles from Missoula to Frenchtown,

closely paralleling the Milwaukee RR right-of-way, or what's left of

it. One of the Milwaukee's electrical substations is still standing

at the site of an old siding named Primrose, about 9 miles west of

Missoula and 6 miles east of Frenchtown. For years I had no idea

how to reach this location by car until I asked my uncle who

operated Milw substations and he told me you had to get off the

highway at Frenchtown and come in along Mullan Rd from the west or

Missoula from the east.

Additionally, does anyone know when Hwy 10 was built north of the

Mullan Road? I-90 now occupies much, if not all, of that route.

One last query: Was the Mullan Road in this location ever numbered

as US 10?

Between this group and the YT people maybe I'll figure this out.

Thanks in advance for any info provided. Merry Christmas and Happy

New Year!

It's an interesting argument to let the states keep the gas tax money,

but on closer examination, this would not be a good thing. There are a

number of Western states with low populations that wouldn't generate

nearly enough cash to cover their road construction and maintenance.

Montana has maybe 1 million residents; think they alone would generate

enough money to maintain all the roads in that vast state?

It's kind of like the salary cap in the NFL. The lower-market teams get

money from the big-market teams so there's more uniformity. Although

one can argue the quality of roads between states, there truly isn't

that much difference. Especially when compared to the first half of the

20th century, in which a main road could go from concrete to gravel to

mud in a heartbeat (example: the old Jericho Gap along old Route 66 in

Texas).

So if your state gets back just 86 cents on the federal dollar, you can

bet a few cents went to states like Wyoming, South Dakota or Idaho.

That's so you can drive to Yosmite, the Black Hills, a new job in the

Pacific Northwest, etc., in relative comfort.

Yahoo Groups has deactivated my address for the third time in four days. I

reactivated it then switched addresses to one where I hope the SpamCop BL is

not used. No one needs to do anything because of this nor is it all that

important that anyone even know. I just thought I'd explain in case anyone

noticed.

But something that folks may need to know about is the fact that there seems

to be a battle of sorts going on between Yahoo and SpamCop. Here is a quote

I've seen:

"SpamCop knows they are blocking yahoo and are

proud of it, their response is complain to yahoo

for not doing enough to block spam."

There's a good chance that this does not affect you by virtue of your mail

server not using SpamCop but you should probably at least be aware that some

folks may not be seeing all the messages.

Hoping the big guys get this all sorted soon,

Denny

Yo Johnnie,

That is good news and then add that Congressmen Jerry Lewis and Joe Baca

have also been informed of the status of the funding. Which they were

surprised to learn that we were not getting the million each year that the

bill called for. And in fact both have directed their staffs to look into

and work with us to increase the funding. Now we need to bring the other

congressional leaders up to speed and get their commitment to support us.

Thanks for the travel information on DC. Are you going to be able to join us

in DC? If not can you set up a meeting with Heather's staff for us if you

feel we should make a courtesy call on them. Being that congress will be in

recess on the dates we will be there it will be their staffs that we get in

to see. As to the folks that we really want to see at the National Parks

Services and Bureau of Interior they are not in recess.

Subject: 66 to D.C.

Greetings travelers,

Just a note on getting around in D.C. The subway runs from Washington

National Airport with a station at the Smithsonian on the capital plaza and

I forget if there are other stations nearer the Congressional offices, but

you can check it out on the net. Anyway, I always use the subway when I

went to D.C. when I worked with Dept. of Energy folks and others. The

Hampton Inn you all are staying at, assuming it is in the beltway, may be

near a subway station or if not, many of the hotels have an on call free

shuttle that can pick you up and deliver you to the nearest subway station.

Meanwhile, I met with Congresswoman Heather Wilson here in ABQ Jan 12 along

with my VP Tom Willis. Heather was a key sponsor in the House of the Act.

Heather accepted our assertion the the program was at a point to be ramped

up and outlined a plan that would enable her to initiate a funding increase

for Fiscal Year 2005 (beginning Oct 2004). I want to discuss the plan with

Michael Taylor when he returns from Missouri before proceeding. After the

meeting with Michael, we'll do an info dump.

I just got back to my daughters this afternoon after a two day visit

with friends of mine who recently moved to Alma, AR (from the Dallas

area). Alma is almost in Oklahoma, being about 10 miles east of Fort

Smith. Thursday nite my friend and I did drive over to Van Buren to

see what the new I-540 by-pass into Fort Smith has done to kill the

town. A lot of shut down buildings, but being practically in Fort

Smith has helped the town from dying completely - as yet.

Having a whole day to get back to Memphis we decided to make a road

trip out of it - so, of course, it rained today. Why not. Anyway

some of our slightly damp findings.

Alma is known as the spinach capitol of the country - so if you like

spinach, go to Alma. I guess they have plenty of it. They also have

a life size statue of good old Popeye holding his can - and next to

him, painted on the side of the water district office is a cartoon

with all the characters; Wimpy, Jeep, Popey and Olive Oyl sailing over

the ocean.

I took 64B out of town to 64 and a few miles down the road came on a

Burma Shave sign someone had planted on their front lawn which was

wide enough to set the signs the correct distance:

Passing Cars

When you

Can't see

May get you

A glimpse

Of eternity

Burma Shave

Sort of neat.

To the west of Ozark we found some beautiful scenery and some hills

that would do credit to West Virginia!!! Getting thru that we found

outselves in Ozark and got a couple pictures of the Franklin County

Courthouse. Beyond that we found one what is probably one of the

original bridges - well, at least one of the shots came out ok.

Arriving in the Russellville area we got some good shots of the

Illinois Bayou and U S 64 coming across part of it.

We went back to I-40 in Russellville as 64 goes north of Little Rock

at Conway. We did want to do at least part of 70 east of Little Rock

and it was getting on toward noontime.

We picked up 70 in Galloway and headed east. As we drove along we

kept noticing what appeared to be some sort of right-of-way on our

left. Grown over, but still noticible. I think it may have been a

railroad right of way at one time - simply because in several towns,

like Hazen, we found "Kansas skyscrapers", but with no railroad tracks

anywhere around them In Hazen we found a railroad station, with no

tracks, except a short stretch just to the east with a Union Pacific

caboose on the tracks. In another town, back to the west we found the

same thing with a UP boxcar and caboose on the tracks. Perhaps the

townspeople were putting up an offering to the gods in hopes their

railroad would someday return.

East of De Volls Bluff we found an old drawbridge over the White

River that still carries 64. However, if you want to travel over it

as U S 64, you'd better hurry. They are already constructing a

bypass, over what appears to be the old railbed and bridge a short way

upstream (or maybe downstream). From this point on we found a rather

long stretch of the old road, complete with bridges about every 300

yards - these are the old style bridges with the low concrete railings

with the holes in them. There was one that may be a messenger of

things to come - crews were busy building a parallel bridge, so they

are either beginning to by-pass these old treasures, or starting to

open 70 up to 4-lane limited access as they have done to other U S

highways.

Just west of Brinkly we found a real treasure!!! Unfortunately,

this treasure is pretty near gone now. It was an old motel - with

garages between each unit!!! And, yes, I have pictures of it. Not to

good - lot of trees in the way. And in Brinkley itself we found an

old gas station that has been restored (or at least fixed up) and is

being used as an insurance office. Hope the occupants didn't mind a

wild eyed, wet Mainiac taking pictures of their little office. LOL

Since it was growing late we returned to I-40 in Brinkley, which is

about 60 miles west of Memphis. Thus we missed a photo op of the

steel truss bridge over the St. Francis River between Madison and

Widener - but it is close enough so we can take a couple hours to run

down and shoot it if we choose to. Again, I have photos - as soon as

I download all this stuff I'll be posting it. I really should invest

in a lap top. We may download them to my daughters computer, then

move them to a CD. Shall see this weekend.

I mentioned rain. We did manage to get ahead of it east of Conway

and Little Rock. So our U S 70 photos are a lot dryer - and so were

we.

Happy Traveling, everybody.

Hudsonly,

Alex B
