Yo Johnnie,

That is good news and then add that Congressmen Jerry Lewis and Joe Baca

have also been informed of the status of the funding. Which they were

surprised to learn that we were not getting the million each year that the

bill called for. And in fact both have directed their staffs to look into

and work with us to increase the funding. Now we need to bring the other

congressional leaders up to speed and get their commitment to support us.

Thanks for the travel information on DC. Are you going to be able to join us

in DC? If not can you set up a meeting with Heather's staff for us if you

feel we should make a courtesy call on them. Being that congress will be in

recess on the dates we will be there it will be their staffs that we get in

to see. As to the folks that we really want to see at the National Parks

Services and Bureau of Interior they are not in recess.

Here is the list of folks that are for sure going and then some possible

Subject: 66 to D.C.

Greetings travelers,

Just a note on getting around in D.C. The subway runs from Washington

National Airport with a station at the Smithsonian on the capital plaza and

I forget if there are other stations nearer the Congressional offices, but

you can check it out on the net. Anyway, I always use the subway when I

went to D.C. when I worked with Dept. of Energy folks and others. The

Hampton Inn you all are staying at, assuming it is in the beltway, may be

near a subway station or if not, many of the hotels have an on call free

shuttle that can pick you up and deliver you to the nearest subway station.

Meanwhile, I met with Congresswoman Heather Wilson here in ABQ Jan 12 along

with my VP Tom Willis. Heather was a key sponsor in the House of the Act.

Heather accepted our assertion the the program was at a point to be ramped

up and outlined a plan that would enable her to initiate a funding increase

for Fiscal Year 2005 (beginning Oct 2004). I want to discuss the plan with

Michael Taylor when he returns from Missouri before proceeding. After the

meeting with Michael, we'll do an info dump.

Lulu,

As I said, I HAVE been photographing and documenting these old slab

roads...for years! I luv 'em.

The images will be posted...in an article someday. (OK..maybe a teaser shot

on the group....sometime)

It ain't procrastination, its obligation...I have a book project, plus two

other articles to get out first! Thomas and I have talked about such an

article, but decided to do the other stuff first (including the Rte 66

Department!)

(Plus people keep wanting me to do paintings!)

I drove one of the slabs yesterday afternoon..ahhh, the "kathump-thump" of

the joints in the road.

Walgreens interest waning

By Dennis W. Sowers, Of The Press Staff

Walgreens apparently has pulled back from developing the southwest

corner at Garrison and Central avenues, according to one of the

property owners.

"They said they didn't have any more interest," said Vince Scott, who

owns the Boots Motel property with his wife Kristi. "That just came

from them, the Walgreens' people. I don't know."

Scott said the leasing firm negotiating for the purchase of the

property stopped further discussions last Thursday.

"There was a lot of interest in it," Scott said. "I don't know if

it's final. It seems like it. They may not be coming.

"We thought there was a pretty good deal on the property. It seemed

like a pretty sure thing."

The current Boots owner couldn't speculate on whether it was a matter

of market timing or whether Walgreens or its agents found something

in the demographics to delay funding or building at this time. The

city has said for weeks -- and met behind closed doors -- that a

major industry was interested in Carthage. City officials never

indicated if that business was Walgreens.

"I would say most everybody is disappointed," Scott said. "I would

say the city is the ultimate looser."

Scott said that he was basically taking a wait and see attitude and

did not plan to make any improvements to the property, "especially if

someone wants to use the land." He also said that he is

exploring "some possibilities."

Scott also said that Rolf Wilkin, the Arkansas owner of the former

Eureka Pizza was putting a for sale sign on his property; Scott was

not sure if selling the property separately was Wilkin's intention or

not. The sale of the pizza property could hurt any future joint sale

of the corner properties to a major player.

If the sale of Eureka Pizza went through to another buyer, Scott is

concerned that would create "inconsistent development." Scott

believes that his 325-foot by 200-foot property and the Eureka land

make up a good sized lot, and that "a major player can invest that

much capital in a piece of property."

If a major business does not show interest, Scott said that he

has "toyed with the idea" of preserving the Boots. He said someone

would have to figure out some way to make it entertaining.

"Obviously, you have to make some uplifts," he said.

Despite his disappointment, Scott was trying to stay positive.

"It could be something even better," he said. "Things usually happen

for a reason."

>Do you have the inside decorated yet?

Yes, he does, and it is COOL. Last time Shellee and Jim got together with the

Tulsa

crew, we all sat around a big table at Ollie's, looking at paint chips and

discussing the

proper color combination for painting the trim and loft ladder in the cabin.

Shellee has been plotting this neon sign for months. I am very impressed that

she

managed to keep it quiet for that long. It looks great. Who was your

glassblower,

Shellee? The Ns seem to have Tom Carr's fingerprints all over them, but there's

another artist in St. Louis who does those exaggerated drop-turns, too. Nice

work.

Jim, I think that little redhead you've picked up is a keeper. :)

Hi Folks,

Thank you all so much for the comments on the neon sign and for the nice

birthday wishes (it's actually next month, but I don't mind an early present!).

Shellee also gets credit for the decorating inside. I've posted another photo to

Hey Emily and all the American Road friends,

Yes, I had been plotting the neon sign (for Jim Ross) for awhile. My neon glass

blowing man is ROSS Pettid, at All-Star Signs. Do you believe his name is Ross?

hehe. It took awhile to figure out if we could do the design the way I wanted,

we weren't sure if the sun rays at the top could be done in neon, but it all

worked out. In fact, I took photographs documenting the process of the glass

blowing, bending, finishing work: laying the finished neon into the thick black

paint to mask out what we don't want to see, etc. The folks at All-Star Signs

let me hang out there as long as I wanted, and I was there for 4 1/2 hours

documenting the process. It was really fascinating and you learn to really

appreciate the art of neon, the skill of glass blowing. I presented a little

photo book of the *Making of Jim's Modern Cabin* NEON sign to Mr. Jim Ross,

after he recovered from the initial shock of seeing his JMC sign.

If I can remember, I'll try to post a photo of Jim and I with the sign. It will

be great to finally see sign in the cabin window.

Thanks for all the good feedback. Another labor of Luv... :)

I posted this to Roadgeek but thought it might be intertesting to

folks on American Road as well.

The Center for Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College has put a

2300 postcard collection online. There are roads and highway

pictures among them dating back 100 years.

The collection can be found at:

You can scroll through the information to the postcard inventory.

There I found postcards showing.

Otto Mears' Toll Road (Silverton-Ouray CO)

Million Dollar Highway((Silverton-Ouray CO)

Lizard Head Pass (Delores-Telluride CO)

Road to Mesa Verde NP from Durango CO

Wolf Creek Pass (Alamosa-Pagosa Springs CO)

Roads around Mesa Verde

Many are not identified by their numbers--either because they are

pre-US numbered or the postcard makers didn't use them. But most of

the roads correspond to US Highways 550, 160, 666 and Colorado 145.

Not all the links work and that's a little frustrating.

I also found it was easier to find the postcards I was interested by

copying the list and from the web site and pasting it into an MS

Word doc. It came out to 63 pages but since the full Internet

address is listed for each card it was easier to use Word's Find

tool than Explorer's (for me anyway).

I threw out a trivia question a few days ago, which I realize is a

bit arcane even by the trivial standards of trivia, but nonetheless,

here is the question and a little "stuff" concerning the answer:

Q: Besides it's known eastern terminus that it shared with US 66 at

Chicago's Jackson Blvd and Michigan Ave, where else has US

34 "ended" on the east side of its run?

A: I know of three other spots, and there is a possible fourth. In

chronological order, the "possible" is the earliest.

The 1926 plan called for US 34 to run from Chicago to Council Bluffs

Iowa. It was to coexist with US 32 for the portion from Chicago to

Sheffield, IL. However, maps seem to show US32 only on the Chicago

to Sheffield run, so it is possible that in practice, 34 was only

signed from Sheffield to Council Bluffs.

Later, in the early 1930s, US 32 was abandoned as US 34 was signed

to Jackson and Michigan, as the questions states.

At that point, 34 and 66 were cosigned from Jackson and Michigan to

Harlem Avenue at the border between Berwyn and Lyons, Illinois, a

distance of about 10 miles. The route was Jackson west to Ogden,

then Ogden southwest. The next change for US34 was to have it begin

at Ogden and Clark, on Chicago's north side, following Ogden all the

way to Harlem and avoiding Jackson altogether. The portion of Ogden

that connected to Clark Street is long gone, and there is a story in

that which I am still researching. It's a classic: Pork Barrel

spending by a corrupt Chicago mayor to build popular public works

projects and funnel money to cronies; the building of a viaduct to

bring tourists to Chicago's famed Lincoln Park Zoo, said viaduct

designed to transport those tourists UP and WAY over the city's most

horrible slum, known as "Little Hell."

The section of Ogden north of Little Hell near Lincoln Park was the

boyhood home of Walt Disney, at 1523 Ogden. It was also used as

the "getaway" route of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre gunmen, who

drove from the scene of the crime at 2122 N. Clark, south on Clark

to Ogden, SW on Ogden to North Ave, then west. Today, the viaduct is

gone, torn down in the 1980s, and Ogden comes to a dead end about a

mile north of Jackson near Chicago Ave. And you have to be making a

major wage to afford to live in the new homes being built in the

area that used to be Little Hell.

Back to US 34. For a time, it had its eastern terminus at the

Chicago border with its nearest suburb, Cicero, at the intersection

of Ogden, Cicero Avenue, and 26th street. This is the sight of

another long-gone bridge: Ogden used to soar over both cross streets

and the Burlington Railroad tracks here. On the north side of Ogden

here is the site of a huge industrial complex that once was the

Western Electric Hawthorne Works. The tower and many of the

buildings still stand. Much of the property is now the Hawthorne

Shopping Center. This was also the original starting point of IL-4,

the predecessor route to US 66.

Currently, US 34 begins-and ends-at Ogden and Harlem, the spot where

66 turned south and split from US 34. So at this point, 34 and

Historic 66 are not co-signed at all (In Illinois, the Historic 66

signs are posted almost as prevalently as "active" routes).

So, for those of you who have read down this far, thanks for reading

this trivial pursuit—hope I didn't bore you too much!

"MOTHER" OF ALL ROAD TRIPS ROLLS THROUGH GOFFS, CALIFORNIA

America's Biggest Road Trip Is Well Underway As "Roadside Attraction"

Route 66 Caravan Makes Its Way Across the "Mother Road"

WHAT: More than 40 years after he first traveled the legendary road, Jim

Conkle, a decorated Vietnam Veteran and proclaimed "Modern-Day Will Rogers of

Route 66," is leading a unique 66-day pilgrimage across the eight-state

stretch of what is commonly referred to as America's "Mother Road": Route 66.

Starting in Santa Monica, Calif. and landing in Chicago, Ill., Jim Conkle, in

conjunction with Hampton Hotels, will post more than 60 large "Roadside

Attraction" signs along the Route, including one at the GOFFS SCHOOLHOUSE

MUSEUM and CULTURAL CENTER. The signs, designed to be a new visual road map

for travelers looking for unique attractions to explore along Route 66, will

highlight and tell the story of special sites, treasured landmarks and

vintage establishments along the route's 2,448 miles.

SIGN POSTING: The GOFFS SCHOOLHOUSE MUSEUM and CULTURAL CENTER at 37198

Lanfair Road, Goffs, California (corner of Goffs Road & Lanfair Road) will

receive a "Route 66 Roadside Attraction" designation and sign recognizing the

GOFFS SCHOOLHOUSE MUSEUM and CULTURAL CENTER as a "Site Worth Seeing" along

Route 66. The GOFFS SCHOOLHOUSE is located on the original pre-1931

alignment of historic Route 66.

WHEN: Friday, May 2, 2003, 9:00 AM

WHY: Last year, Hampton Inn Hotels turned its attention to helping

preserve one of the richest historical tapestries of the American travel

experience and the biggest landmark of them all: Route 66. The cross-country

road trip is sponsored by Hampton as part of its now four-year-long

commitment to preserve endangered roadside attractions and local landmarks

through its Save-A-Landmark campaign. During this time, Hampton has donated

countless volunteer hours and more than one-half million dollars toward

refurbishing and highlighting historic landmarks and vintage establishments

across the country for travelers.

Hey David,

That's great!!! I enjoyed your research - you've

done a great job of it.

Note on "Little Hell" - from what you say it

probably now could be called "Expensive Hell"!!! LOL

Thanks again for the time and effort - being a

technical researcher on the Hudson Motor Car Company I

know what your work entails.

Hi, My wife bought a couple 8oz drink glasses with a map and logo

showing the Snoq. Pass. Summit Inn. The highway shown is US10 so

the glasses are pre-interstate era. The Lk Washington Floating Bridge

is shown, so that means the glasses date back no farther than 1941.

The building is now the restroom/mini-mart facility just east of the

crest a few hundred feet. Does anyone know when this "inn" went out

of business. I've been crossing the pass regularly since the late 50s

and I don't ever remember it as an "inn", but I could be wrong. This

might be a good question for some of my fellow Yellowstone Trail

associates. Thanks.

Yep. Read the sign in the second photo on this page:

The fine print is hard to read, but basically it details which San Bernardino

County ordinances are to blame for this policy. The sign is posted on the front

door of the cafe.

If you are planning to See Us In September - please read. Some of you

received a similar letter in the packets you requested. Helen

San Bernardino Route 66 Rendezvous Information

The San Bernardino Convention & Visitors Bureau (SBCVB) conceived the Route

66 Rendezvous in 1990 and remains sole owner and sole producer of the event.

Jo Ann Webb is the SBCVB Special Events Coordinator and our main contact. Jo

Ann's office at the corner of 2nd and E Streets is ground zero for Rendezvous

operations.

Michael Wallis will be inducted into the Cruisin Hall of Fame at the Cruisin

Hall of Fame Brunch on Saturday, September 17, 2005, at the Radisson Hotel 295

N. E Street. The brunch is from 9:30 to 11:30 AM. Tickets are $25.00.

Contact the SBCVB at (909) 889-3980 to make reservations.

The downtown Rendezvous Club Hospitality Room will be at the Radisson. There

will be a second Rendezvous Club Hospitality Room at the National Orange Show

(NOS) Event Center. For more info or to sign up for the Rendezvous Club, go

to the Rendezvous website www.route-66.org and click on Rendezvous Club

(avail. in May).

The Artist & Authors and the State Association Exhibits will be located in

the City Hall Turnaround on D Street at 3rd Street, in the downtown exhibit

area. This is right in front of the City Hall Fountain (one of the coolest

places

in town, in more ways than one!) and also one of the busiest intersections

during the Rendezvous. This location has easy access to the Radisson for

parking and R & R at the Rendezvous Club. Jim Conkle will have a room available

at

the Radisson for exhibit materials storage also. The City Hall address is 300

N. D Street.

The closest parking to the Artists & Authors and State Association exhibit

area is at the Radisson and it's free, first come, first served. Enter the

parking lot from 2nd Street between E and D Streets. Park on Level 3 for

easiest

access to the exhibit area. There is also lots of free parking at the

Carousel Mall parking structure on E Street just north of 2nd. Additionally,

looking

at the map, there is beaucoup parking around the entire event, but the

Radisson is the best if you have to carry stuff.

You'll also have access to the exhibit area, by car, outside of the cruise

hours, so you can drop off or pick up before or after those hours. Once the

cruise starts, entrance and egress of vehicles, is limited to emergencies.

The Crusin Hall of Fame (CHOF) Expo (they have been searching for a permanent

location for years, you all know how that goes?) will be in the Dome Building

at the NOS Event Center. The California Museum folks from Victorville will

be located there. Other exhibits, to be announced. For more information about

the CHOF, go to the Rendezvous website, www.route-66.org and click on Hall of

Fame.

The Hilton Hotel is located at 285 E. Hospitality Lane. This is the site of

the Steinbeck Awards Luncheon on Friday, September 16, 2005, and the E-Group

Breakfast on Sunday, September 18, 2005. For information on the luncheon go to

the Rendezvous website www.route-66.org, and click on Steinbeck Awards. For

information on the E-group Breakfast contact Mike Ward at

. Or, contact David Knudson at national66@national66.org,

or go to the

National Federation website at www.national66.org.

The Hilton is approximately 2.5 miles from the NOS Event Center, and 3.5

miles from the downtown exhibit area. They plan to have shuttles available from

the Hilton to the exhibit area, but they will not run as often as they did in

Tulsa! And with all the free parking and pretty easy straight shot access to

the exhibit area, we don't anticipate any transportation problems. To get to

the exhibit area from the Hilton you would turn left out of the parking lot and

go west on Hospitality Lane to E Street, turn right on E Street go north to

2nd Street, turn right on 2nd, then turn left into the Radisson parking

structure. Or to drop off or pick up at the exhibit area, continue east on 2nd

to D

Street and turn left on D Street, and then left into the City Hall Turnaround.

Piece of cake!

The Wigwam Motel is located at 2728 W. Foothill Blvd. in San Bernardino

(unless you need to mail something to them, then they are in Rialto, don't ask)

The

Wigwam is the site of the E-Group Pool Party on Wednesday, September 14,

2005. For information on the E-group Pool Party, contact Ken Turmel at

thelandrunner@yahoo.com. The Wigwam is approximately 3.5 miles from the exhibit

area,

4.5 miles from the NOS Event Center, and 7 miles from the Hilton. To get to

the exhibit area from the Wigwam you would turn left out of the parking lot and

go east on Foothill Blvd. Continue on Foothill, it will turn into 5th. Street

after about a mile. Keep going on 5th. Okay, now, when you get to the

downtown area, you can either turn right (south) on E Street, then left on 2nd

Street, then left into the Radisson lot. OR, you can continue past E Street and

turn right on D Street and continue to the exhibit area and turn right into the

turnaround. To get to the Radisson lot continue down D Street and turn right

on 2nd.

The RV Park is located in the NOS Event Center and is located at the corner

of E Street and Mills. The entrance is on Mills. I understand that Crocodile

Lile, Dennis Karlstad and Betty Halbe, have already made their reservations.

(Breaking news - there may be a second RV Park in the Downtown event area -

stay tuned.)

The Cruise Route is FIVE miles long! It basically goes from 5th Street on

the north to Sierra Way on the east to Rialto on the south and D Street on the

west. THEN, all the way down Arrowhead, to just below Mill Street and into and

around inside the NOS Event Center then back up Arrowhead. (This is the

addition to the cruise route this year). It is within that route, that all of

the

Rendezvous activities take place. Whew! Just as certain streets are set

aside for cruising, certain streets are also set aside as pedestrian walkways.

That's where the vendors, exhibits and entertainment venues are located.

There may also be registered vehicle parking on some of those streets.

(Registered vehicles are those 1973 and earlier, collector cars, as well as any

year

Corvette, Viper or Prowler) Those streets are basically E Street between 2nd

and

4th, D Street between 2nd and 5th, Court Street between E and Arrowhead, and

3rd Street between D and Sierra Way. There is also a vendor area in the park

on 4th Street, between E and F, and at Meadowbrook Park on Sierra Way between

2nd and 3rd. Whew again! Oh, and there will also be the new (for 2005)

vendor area at the NOS Event Center. Is any one tired of walking yet?

We do plan to have shuttle service between the downtown exhibit area and the

NOS Event Center. Also, a few of us California guys and girls, will have golf

carts and we'll be able to do a little schlepping.

All activities in the 37-blocks of the downtown exhibit area, where the

Artists & Authors and State Association exhibits will be located, are FREE,

including the live entertainment on the Sun Stage at Court Street Square. The

venue

at the NOS Event Center (new for 2005) has an entrance fee of $5.00. We don't

know yet what vendors and activities will be there, although Firestone will be

the anchor.

Each year the County Library has a book sale during the Rendezvous, I always

mean to get up there and never find the time, maybe this year? The library is

at the corner of 4th Street and Sierra Way.

You say that you have a classic car that you want to register and cruise? Go

to the Rendezvous website www.route-66.org and click on Registration.

The Orange Show Speedway is at the NOS Event Center. The Speedway is the

site of the Burnout and Flame Throwing contests, and is also the track that Jim

ran the Hampton Caravan Motorhome around last year, much to the delight of the

crowd, and the thirty or so roadies that he had on board.

The Aztec Hotel is located at 311 W. Foothill Blvd., Monrovia. It is the

site of the Tuesday and Wednesday, September 13-14, 2005 Preservation Work Shop

hosted by the NPS. For information about the workshop, contact Michael Taylor

at the NPS website www.cr.nps.gov/rt66. The Aztec Hotel is approximately 45

miles from the exhibit area. If you need directions, please email me at

bakerhab@aol.com. Basically, you continue west on Foothill, past the Wigwam and

into Los Angeles County, until you pass the Azusa Drive In Theater, where you

veer slightly on to Huntington Drive. When you reach Monrovia, turn right on

Myrtle and then left on Foothill Blvd. The hotel is just up a bit on the right.

Best bet, for driving the route in LA County, get Scott Piotrowski's book,

Finding the End of the Mother Road: Route 66 in Los Angeles County.

Communications during the Rendezvous are probably best handled via cell

phone. While we'll all be spending a lot of time together at the exhibit area,

it's a big event, and at any time, anyone could be anywhere. Mike Ward has

agreed to collect cell phone numbers from attendees prior to the Rendezvous and

give us each a list. Send your cell phone number to Mike at

flyboy1946@hotmail.com.

Another means of communication that works well at the Rendezvous are the

little FRS radios. If you have one bring one, and we'll use Channel 14.

The California Theatre, located at 562 W. 4th Street, just west of E Street,

was built in 1928 in opulent Spanish/Moorish style, and is beautifully

preserved both inside and out. It is the site of Will Rogers last public

appearance

in June of 1935. An enormous mural of Rogers adorns the east wall of the

building.

Art on 5th located at 468 W. 5th Street, may host a collectibles exhibit.

Talks are in the works.

The San Bernardino Route 66 Museum, known locally, as the McDonalds Museum,

as it's on the site of the original 1940 McDonalds Restaurant, is at 1398 N. E

Street. This museum is a delightful stroll down McMemory Lane and is so

authentic, that people regularly stop by and ask to buy a hamburger. (Albert

Okura, the new owner of Amboy operates this museum at no charge to the public.)

There is a Stater Bros. Super Market (Stater Bros. is the Rendezvous lead

sponsor) at 648 W. 4th Street. It is one block west of the California Theater.

Funny story, when my daughter was little, she thought that when I said that we

were going to Stater Bros., I was saying 'Stay at your brothers', and she

always wondered why we went to a store, instead of to visit Uncle Pat. There is

also a Stater Bros. near the Wigwam at 571 E. Foothill Blvd, in Rialto, and

near the Hilton at 2053 E Washington St, in Colton.

The Inland Center Mall is on E Street, south of Mill Street. It is very near

the NOS Event Center. The Carousel Mall shown on the map, is virtually

empty.

The Rendezvous dress code is Casual, Casual, Casual. Got an Aloha shirt?

The louder, the better! Shorts, sandals, sundresses, cutoffs, khakis, rule the

weekend. Don't forget your sunscreen and a hat.

The weather will be hot or hotter. Last year it was 90 and the year before

it was 105. But it's a dry heat. Average for mid September: High 91 and Low

61.

Ontario Airport is the closest regular passenger carrier airport to San

Bernardino. It is approximately 20 miles west of the Hilton and there is an

airport shuttle available. If you are flying, let me know and I will send you a

special brochure with all the airport details.

By now, those of you, who will be exhibiting, either as an Artist, Author or

State Association, should have received the invitation and information letter

from David Knudson. If you have not received this information, please contact

David Knudson, at national66@national66.org, or Helen Baker, at

bakerhab@aol.com, and we'll send you the information, ASAP!

And, last, but far from least, the Rendezvous Exhibit Schedule is adhered to

strictly. To quote the standard vendor contract: "Vendors/Exhibitors must be

open during the hours of the event. Vendors/Exhibitors may open earlier than

times listed below, but closing time is enforced."

Thurs., Sept. 15th 5:00pm - 10:00pm(Cruise Starts at 6pm)

Friday, Sept. 16th 3:00pm - 10:00pm (Cruise Starts at 6pm)

Saturday, Sept. 17th 10:00am - 10:00pm(Cruise Starts at 10am)

Sunday, Sept. 18th 10:00am - 4:00pm (Cruise Starts at 10am)

Exhibitors should plan on a very long and busy four days.

In fact, as David Knudson stated in the Steinbeck Awards news release, "We

chose the luncheon format this year for two reasons. There are so many

Rendezvous activities going on in the evenings that we didn't want guests to

miss them.

And, secondly, the authors and artists participating in the Authors & Artists

Expo, the vendors and the state association representatives won't have to

leave their booths during these very busy times." For a list of all Rendezvous

activities, go to the Rendezvous website www.route-66.org and click on

Schedules.

The exhibit area is in a high foot traffic area, and we are planning signage

and additional activities, to attract the crowds to this area, and put them in

a Route 66 State of Mind.

Let me know if you have questions about what it's like to exhibit at the

Rendezvous, Debbie and Helen have done it! It's fun, but it's hard work, being

at

an exhibit, for up to 12 hours a day. You may be wondering who is left on

the streets at 10 o'clock at night. Ohmygosh! Just thousands of people,

adults, kids, teenagers. And, yes, it is a very family oriented crowd. In fact

last year, when Brian McKay was here exhibiting his 1930 Nash, he commented,

that

he was so surprised to see, so many families.

I just can't stress strongly enough, how important it is that your exhibits

open on time and stay open until the event closes. The crowds will be there,

and they'll be looking for both information and for souvenirs. This will be a

great opportunity to educate travelers about your state and sell your

merchandise.

For those of you, who are exhibiting, even though overnight security is

provided, as with any outdoor/non-gated event, we recommend that merchandise

and/or

small items, which can be easily carried away, be removed from your booth

space each night. Remember, if parked on Level 3, in the Radisson lot, you're

close to your car. Also, Jim Conkle's room at the Radisson will be available,

and we may have lockable storage available right at the exhibit area. More on

this later. Nevertheless, we'll take care of you. Trust us!

There is so much more to do and see, not just in San Bernardino, but also in

southern California, than I can write about here. If you have specific

questions or want additional information, let me know at bakerhab@aol.com.

How come nearly every time I click on my American Road bookmark I am

asked for my I.D. and password? I'm curious because other Yahoo

groups I monitor usually ask for this only if I want to post

something. Just wondering.

Big tomato Mike and the Catsup Bottle Lady are setting a candle in the window

Just bought a book or Route 1, coming from E. Boothbay, ME, book rate,

I'm glad to know that I wasn't the last person to receive their copy. I got

mine last Saturday.

Oh dear. Sorry about that. The story was about the TN state road

92 bridge across the French Broad River at Dandridge. Another truss

bridge that is simply to old, beat up and narrow to keep in

service. The city wanted to preserve the bridge, or at least a part

of it, but lacked the funds.

In other local bridge news, the new US 11 bridge in Loudon opened

friday to rave reviews from those who drive that route daily. The

new bridge is wider, safer, and easier to drive. The old bridge, so

I hear, will be demolished in sections. It's going to be a tricky

busniess if they use explosives so close to the new bridge. The

camel back gave 75 years of service to travelers and will be missed

by all who love old bridges.

Both camel backs at Kingston, the US 70 bridge across the Clinch and

the TN 58 bridge across the Tennessee, are in the process of being

replaced. I already have good pictures of them.

I'm not at all surprised to hear the Hiwassee River bridge is going

to be replaced. I didn't know that it once was a toll bridge.

Gotta get down there and get pictures soon.

The loss of all these bridges makes the Walnut Street Bridge in

Chattanooga all the more precious. Susan and I just got back from a

day in Chattanooga, and took a good number of pictures of the

bridges there, along with the amazing changes that downtown

Chattanooga is experiencing. A fuller write up will follow.
