Hi all-

Well, we're hitting the road this weekend (finally!!) and 66in' it to Seligman

where we're staying for 2 nights (I just love that place....and I'm hoping to

catch Angel, wish me luck!)....then off to the Grand Canyon via the Sunset

Crater and Little Colorado River Gorge route.

I'm wondering if someone can help me out. We were planning leaving Seligman

very early in the morning to start the drive through Flag, Sunset Crater, and on

into the GC....but I know that once you get to Sunset Crater, you have to pay an

entrance fee. Is there a particular time it opens....and if you get there

before they "open".....do you have to wait? We're leaving at the crack of dawn,

and will be at the entrance to Sunset Crater long before 8:00 a.m.......is this

a good idea? Does anyone know how that works amongst Arizona parks? I don't

want to get there and not be able to get in.

Thanks,

Nicole

Nicole,

Sunset Crater National Monument is run by the U.S. National Park Service.

Unlike many state parks, national park units are generally open all night.

The entrance stations tend only to be manned during normal business hours so

if you show up before 8:30 am or so, you'll probably get in without paying

(though they'll catch you on the way out unless you spend all day in the

park).

Check the NPS website (www.nps.gov) and click over to Sunset Crater to check

it out.

Thanks to everyone who responded, including those that emailed off-

list. My problem has not just been with Route 66, but also a couple

of non-road groups, too. I've emailed Yahoo Support, but of course

I've either received the run-around or no response.

Perhaps that's the reason that it's solid semis late at night between

Another thing that I believe happens is that truckers who *KNOW*

While I can't prove it, I'm certain that's the case along U.S. 20

Scott,

It seems more folks were hit with that virus then first thought. I know that

three of the four machines here at my house were hit. It took me all day

Tuesday to get it out of them. So it looks by the lack of volume on the

e-groups that some of our friends might have it too.

At this time I am seeing more on the American Roads group then the Route 66

e-group.

By the way I have the information on the Rendezvous which I will be sending

out in a day or so. Look good so far and if it all comes together as planned

it will be successful.

There used to be an ampitheatre at Southern Illinois University at

Edwardsville (just east of St. Louis) where they held concerts of all kinds

(The Mississippi River Festival? Bet Ron or Emily would know)...for all I

know it may not even be there anymore, but it was a great place to see a

concert; saw everything from Van Cliburn to the band Heart there...while I

can't say Edwardsville has little to offer in the way of cultural arts,

because it does by itself, I can say that if this place still exists it

would be a wonderful resurrection project. I would also say (again, not

speaking for "how little there is to offer in the way of cultural arts")

that Santa Rosa, NM, with their beautiful parks would be a great choice...as

would most any city along Route 66 (i.e. Pontiac, IL, Rolla, MO,

Springfield, MO, Claremore, OK, Clinton, OK, Tucumcari, NM (they manage to

hold two roadie gatherings in a month, so they must have something going

on!)...Tsingtao, Kip

Hello out there - it's been a while. I've been busy at work

and had to go to Atlanta for a week. Can't recommend

Atlanta (a big rich suburb similar to Dallas and DC area)

but I did get to drive home on the 1920 Dixie Highway

route between Marietta, GA and Florence, KY. When

I get my pics developed I will post them on a web-site,

and send you an update.

I missed the late Tom Lutzi's estate auction which featured

a large collection of Lincoln Highway memorabilia. I will

try to get a prices realized listing from the auctioneer for

reference. Already the stuff is appearing on ebay including

a 1915 Official Guide to the LH starting at $500. I was

interested in getting the guide but it wasn't listed at the

auctioneer's web site. Also of interest was an Army medal

for the 1918 Army Convoy on the LH. Also, a metal Lincoln

Highway Tire letter opener, and a large collection of Lincoln

Highway Cigar stuff. Tom had three concrete markers that

were also auctioned. I would be interested in hearing from

any attendees.

Isn't that the truth? I remember going to an auto show some years

back. I checked out a Dodge Caravan and asked the dealer what made it

different from a Plymouth Voyager.

His answer, and I quote, "The nameplate."

I'd fix up a Voyager like a minibus and the Caravan for hauling stuff

if I was in charge at Chrysler.

Today, October 2, the American Road Yahoo Group is 2 years old!

Thanks to everyone for making this a great forum for all of us two

lane road dogs. We currently have a membership base of 201, and

hopefully we can eclipse the 300 mark by this time in 2005.

There has been plenty of hearty discussion during these two years

that have hopefully educated us all on various aspects of historic

highway travel, be it preservation, promotion, or just the tales of

those wandering the lost highways of America. We look forward to

hearing more in the years to come.

Happy trails!

Actually, building on the same platform has been

around for years. American Motors did it in the 1960's

(designed a mid-size car, the Classic - up scaled it

to the Ambassardor, down scaled it to the American)

and even before that. Hudson in the 50's and earlier

- only thing different between Commodores and Supers

is the trim package.

Go back to the 1930's and put the Chrysler output

side by side. Take the nameplates and trim off and

tell me the difference between a Plymouth or Dodge -

without looking at the ID plate.

Hi gang.

Good to hear that some issues are hitting mailboxes already. They

were just mailed by the printer late last week. For those

subscribers who haven't received their copies yet, its on its way!

It generally takes 2 - 3 weeks from when it was mailed.

Emily,

If I win the Lotto....I'll buy it for you and give it to you two lovebirds as

a gift...as long as I can stay

in the "Unkle Chesty Suite" anytime I drive through....

Times are tough, we all know that...and there are lots of folks out there

hanging

on by their "plasma tubes". ($80?....heck, I gotta try that).

One thing you can do is make the following kind of offer. Tell the seller,

that you will

pay $10,000 more than any other offer, IF he will "hold the paper" (Land

contract/contract for deed).

Offer him a juicy percentage, say 9% (or higher, if you have to...that's

better than a CD).....till you can sell your place....and get

established.....say

a 5-year balloon.....further out (7 years) if you can swing it. Once you sell

your house, tell him that you will give him whatever equity you have and that

it will go towards the purchase price. Then plead the Route 66 preservation

cause....get a petition going....do anything you can to make it appealing to

sell property to you and Ron. Work the city council. In your mind, "pretend it's

THE BLUE SWALLOW ( I know you're very fond of it). Once, your home is

sold....and you've put your equity into the motel.....you can approach normal

mortgage

channels for a conventional/commercial(?) loan, if he wants to get out

quickly.

Get a great washing machine and dryer, clean the rooms, wash the bedding....

then invite us roadies over

for a B-B-Que and suds. As I said, I'd give you a free-weekend of my time as

a carpenter/fine painter to help start to touch the place up....FREE......

One VERY IMPORTANT thing is get a great real estate lawyer.....if they don't

just do real estate, take a pass. You want someone you knows the true

in's-and-out's. I know a couple here in Chicago who would advise you, but you'd

be

best off getting a Missouri based attorney.

The NEXT IMPORTANT thing to do is arrange to meet the owner and....WALK THE

PROPERTY.....as you

talk about preserving the property as a Route 66 icon. Does he really want a

developer tearing "his home down".

You and Ron are REALLY wonderful people and very dedicated to the road....our

prayers are with you.

Now, I gotta go and get a ticket for the weekend lotto drawings......

Best of luck,

Unkle Chesty

I am posting this message, as per Scott's request, to the e-groups.

We were invited to the meeting that Scott talks about but being that I was

going to AZ for meetings and events I could not make that meeting. They will

be having another meeting this week which I will miss also as I am going to

Vegas for the SEMA show (Helen & Harry Baker & Jo Ann Webb are already

there). If any of you are in the LA area and can attend the meeting and show

Route 66 support contact Scott for details.

The leaders of this movement called me yesterday and brought me up to date,

as did Scott's report. This is the first project that the folks in West

Hollywood have gotten involved with when it comes to Route 66. The city has

not gotten involved and is taking a wait and see attitude, which this group

is working on bringing them into the process.

We have passed this on to the Los Angeles Conservancy for their support too.

Thanks

Subject: Irv's Burgers

BEGIN MESSAGE:

..........

On Thursday evening, October 28, I journeyed on over

to West Hollywood to represent the Route 66 community

in a meeting to discuss the future of Irvs Burgers.

I almost felt bad for the developers (the Seltzers)

and the gentleman representing Peets Coffee (Peter).

Although I was the only Route 66 enthusiast that was

present, there were about twenty members of the

Burger Brigade present, as well as Irvs Burgers

operator, Sonya. It seemed at times like we were

teaming up and attacking the Seltzers and Peter.

Before getting into details about the status of Irvs,

let me step back a bit and explain a little bit about

the situation in West Hollywood. First of all, West

Hollywood is located in Los Angeles County, west of

Downtown Los Angeles. The post-1936 extension of

Route 66 took the highway through the heart of West

Hollywood on Santa Monica Boulevard, just east of

Beverly Hills. West Hollywood is notable to Route 66

enthusiasts as the home of Barneys Beanery.

Irvs Burgers opened in a tiny stand at 8289 Santa

Monica Boulevard in 1950. In the almost 55 years

since, this little stand has undergone a lot of

changes. From the standpoint of a preservationist,

there is little appeal in the actual structure that is

Irvs Burgers. This tiny little shack lacks adequate

parking, and barely holds enough space for cooking.

Not being a red-meat-eater, I cant say if their food

is any good or not, but it definitely has strong local

support.

Original owner Irv still technically owns the

property. The business, however, is currently

operated by a woman named Sonya (I didnt get her last

name, sorry). Sonya came to the United States with

her family about twenty years ago from South Korea,

and she took over the business about five years ago.

Unfortunately, Irv is getting up there in years (hes

in his late 80s) and has recently signed a long-term

lease with the Seltzer Brothers, who are developers in

the area. The nature of the lease seems to indicate

that the Seltzers are in possession of the property

and therefore can determine its fate. Irv was not

able to attend the meeting.

A quick little side note here that is very relevant.

The property sits on the corner of Santa Monica and

Sweetzer, just east of the heart of what is West

Hollywood. It is located in an area that is highly

commercial along Santa Monica, but extremely dense

residential just off the main strip. There is also an

old auto repair shop on that same corner that in fact

sits on the same property. The shop has been closed

for a number of years.

The Seltzers have already removed all EPA hazards from

the lot that would prevent a new restaurant from being

opened. They have already hired an architect and come

up with a plan for a 1400 square foot building to

occupy the entirety of the property. And they have

already signed a lease with Peets Coffee to open a

store in that new building when it is opened.

However, Peter, the Business Development person (I

dont know his official title) from Peets indicated

throughout the meeting that he and the company he

works for did not want to enter West Hollywood without

the support of the community. He indicated that his

company would be interested in helping Irvs Burgers

and Sonya relocate to a new location. He also

indicated that if someone were to come along and

assume their lease with the Seltzers, the company

would happily step away, if that were what the

community wanted. He seemed genuinely sincere in

saying so.

The Seltzers, for their part, have indicated that they

are losing money on the property, and therefore must

build this building and get one tenant to pay for the

entirety of the lot. Sonya and Irvs simply cannot

pay those bills.

After hearing everyones stories, and adding my two

cents to the meeting, and asking a few questions, here

is where I personally believe that we stand in terms

of Irvs Burgers. The Seltzers seem to fully be in

their legal right to close Irvs and tear it down.

They seem intent on doing that. Peets, for their

part, seem more than willing to attempt to move the

structure and relocate Sonya and Irvs in a new

location. The structure itself does not seem movable.

The City of West Hollywood was not present at the

meeting, and I do not dare to speak for it.

My recommendation on this action is as follows. I

would like to ask the City of West Hollywood to assist

in looking for a new location, preferably near its

current location and preferably along The Mother

Road, for Irvs to move to. I would also ask the

City of West Hollywood to grant Peets Coffee some tax

breaks in exchange for assisting in the relocation of

Irvs Burgers. This seems to me to be the only

logical solution to make all parties relatively happy,

so that it is not a complete loss for anyone involved.

At this point, however, there are going to be more

meetings of the Burger Brigade, followed by another

meeting with the Seltzers, Peter, and the Burger

Brigade. That should all happen sometime this week.

Once those meetings have occurred, I will let everyone

know where we stand, and then ask for an action team

response when the time is right.

In the meantime, if anyone on the group has any

first-hand experiences at Irvs, please contact me

right away. Well need that support up front.
