I would have to dive into the road map collection to see when each of

the following routes passed through, but the intersection of Jackson

and Michigan in Chicago has been part of many important highways over

the years.

In the named highway era, the intersection saw the Dixie Highway, the

Pontiac Trail, and the Yellowstone Trail, perhaps more.

During the early years of the Illinois State Highway system, the

intersection was the starting point of State Bond Issue Routes 1, 4,

5, 6, 18, 19, 21, and 42.

US highways to use the intersection included 14, 32, 34, 41, 54, and 66.

I can't remember but I believe I was on it today. This is day 3 of my US

421 trip.

Started out Thursday in Michigan City, IN and made it into Wilmington, NC

tonite.

I left Bristol, VA this morning - the first part of the trip today thru

TN was a crazy

rollercoaster mountain drive. More on this later.

Happy new year everyone!!

I have a query that puzzles me to no end. Why is American Road, and

other roadie groups for that matter, in the Finance category in Yahoo

Groups? Shouldn't it be in transportation maybe? Hmmm.....

Matt,

When we created the group in 2002 (Has it been that long?), we did select

transportation groups as our category, but for some reason we got put into the

finance section.

Due to the near impossiblity of contacting a living being at Yahoo to ask

about that (and other issues we've had questions about), we've not been able to

find out why our location in the Yahoo Groups world is where it is. But we're

glad you found us anyway! :)

Hi Matt,

While Yahoo's directory structure and categorization seems odd, if

you

drill down to the deeper level where this group is located, we are

in

the right place, according to their categorization.

At the top level "Finance", it doesn't make sense (which is what you

see in the URL), but our group is actually located down as follows:

Business & Finance > Transportation > Highways and Roads. Here is

the

URL to that category (and we are at the top!):

http://www.smallerurl.com/index.php?id=i15zgiv

Hope that helps!

Hi Kids,

Maybe it's just me..... but with the current price of gasoline, I think

"Finance" for a driving group is appropriate, no?

It's funny how that happens...

I also am a member of the yahoogroups of "TentCamping" and "Station

Wagons" and "National Parks" and "Wildlife/Nature" "Environmental

Issues" (can you tell a trend here--at least the *roadie* part?

<grin>)...and I'm a moderator/owner for "GuamAlumni", a local San

Joaquin County yahoogroup, and some other more obscure groups. Also

a member of a few high school/college reunion groups and a group for

those married to persons from Japan/Asia (there are special cultural

strangenesses that happen with this situation and we all

commisserate with each other on this regard <grin>). Because I'm a

professional writer, I'm also a member of bunches of writing

groups... technical writing, copy writing, freelance writing,

freelance editing, and so on. And, since I *love* photography, I'm

also a member of those as well. I don't contribute to most of

them... I usually just lurk... and there are some that aren't very

well moderated that fill up with so much spam and junk that I'm

about ready to just cancel my membership as well... <sigh>

I don't remember how I found this group (maybe I was searching for

websites for great roadtrip recommendations?)... but I'm happy to

have found a bunch of kindred souls who *love being on the road*!

It's the freedom of the road that just gets my creativity flowing

and makes me feel *alive*... yeah!

Anyway.. thanks for being such a great group--I'll dig up some more

pictures of our most recent road trip and post 'em. Is anyone here

planning on seeing a Chinese New Year Festival/parade this year in

February? Last year my wife and I stayed at a La Quinta Motor Inn

in San Francisco (corner of Van Ness and Geary)... and used the

transit (Metro) busses to get around <we originally got to SF by way

of BART from Pleasanton> ... and we not only explored JapanTown (on

Geary) but also the Russian Neighborhoods (on Geary near 22nd

street)... in addition to standing in the rain and watching the

Chinese New Year Parade in Chinatown... What a nifty experience!

How many groups do you belong to total, Dave? And geez,

how do find the time to read messages if you get them in

your inbox daily? Though, I gotta admit, yahoo is very

generous to offer NOT to send email or just the weekly

digests to each member. Very nice feature....

I gotta admit that I like "cruisin" the radio dial when travelling; 1) it is

the challenge of finding music I can stomach; 2) if you can find a little

local station it gives you some flavor of the area you are cruising

through...

if I am at a loss, I try to keep a few CD's on hand to fill in the gaps..try

to keep it eclectic (these lists also change daily, depending on my mood):

--X-More Fun In The New World (do NOT let the name of the band fool

you--awesome cover of Jerry Lee's Breathless...--Doors-LA Woman (the title

track may be the best road song ever!)

--Dylan/The Band: Before The Flood

--Talking Hands: Sand in the Vasoline

--Pink Floyd: The Wall (for those times I cruise by lost icons and get

really bitter)

--Bruce Springsteen: Darkness on the Edge of Town

--REM: Document

--Elvis Presley: Singles

--The Sun Records Story

--Elvis Costello: Anything off the first 3 albums

--The Pretenders: The Pretenders

--The Breeders: Lush Life (if only for the song "Cannonball!)

--(once I hit Glenrio) Ry Cooder....

--And dont forget your Blues Music: Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Elmore

James, Charlie Muselwhite, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, James Cotton

(sorry, I am partial to the Harmonica), Honeyboy Edwards, Buddy Guy and

Junior Wells, etc. etc. etc.

"Wayne's World" imitation...

I'll have to dust off the 33 of Hejira, Tim...haven't listened to that in

I, inadvertantly, solved my "music while traveling" problem. The way traffic

is these days one really is taking a chance digging a CD out of the pile and

putting it in the CD player. I recently bought a 1997 Cadillac (hey, the price

was right and it gets 27 mpg at 70mph - what more you want???) and in the trunk

is this little black box. It's a CD player with a 12 CD cartridge in it. Load

the cartridge up the night before at your motel, put it into the little black

box in the morning and cruise with your tunes all day long. Ain't technology

wonderful!!!!!!!

I had the opportunity to drive across the country last spring. I

especially enjoyed the leg through northern Arizona and New Mexico,

where I spent the whole day listening to the Navajo radio

station. Most of the time I couldn't understand a word they were

saying, but it added an extra dimension to the trip through their land...

24/7 - music of your life. Check this out.

I make up a list of the stations in the areas I'm going to be in. When I

loose the station and can't find another, I just switch over to my CD.

I had the opportunity to drive across the country last spring. I

especially enjoyed the leg through northern Arizona and New Mexico,

where I spent the whole day listening to the Navajo radio

station. Most of the time I couldn't understand a word they were

saying, but it added an extra dimension to the trip through their land...

is these days one really is taking a chance digging a CD out of the pile and

putting it in the CD player.

I'll listen to local radio (the 'scan' function is one of my 'Ain't

technology wonderful!!!' things) for what might be going on as a

'flavor' thing, but I also have an iPod that I plug into the sound system.

The iPod eliminates ALL of the bulk and messing around that comes with

CDs and the earlier cassette tapes while packing enough material to run

my own radio station. My iPod is full of mostly radio hits from the

1960s through 1990s plus lots of 'classic' rock and other more obscure

stuff that I find interesting, nearly 3000 seperate song files in all -

almost 10 days of stuff if played straight through! I have it organized

into playlists that duplicated my favorite older cassette tape mixes or

I can simply set it to play songs from its entire library in random

order. Truly a 'radio' that only plays stuff that I like and all in a

package that is no larger than a deck of cards. I consider it to have

been the best $300 that I have ever spent - a REAL 'Ain't technology

wonderful!!!' thing! :-)

As for specific roadtripping stuff, besides the radio hits (I am

especially partial to 1970s R/B and disco and 1980s 'New Wave' tunes),

one interesting tune that I first heard during a road trip in late June

of 2004 was 'Move Ya Body' by Nina Sky, this while scanning the local FM

radio as I was driving southbound through Chicago on the Edens/Kennedy

expressway just after sunrise. It is a light, simple 'urban' tune that

fit perfectly into the setting.

Jeff Scarbrough brought up another good subject for discussion. And

that is really great local radio stations to listen to while

cruising down the road.

I'll listen to my tapes and cds, but I also like to tune in AM and

FM stations, the first thing road warriors had to listen to while on

the pavement. I can remember trips with my parents where we HAD to

listen to THEIR music. That was complete agony.

These days, I also check out stations for local color. Sometimes I

have found out about a great nearby festival. Other times, it was a

fantastic restaurant that I might otherwise have driven by.

These days, I have a lot of luck with AM stations in small markets,

where businesses can advertise for cheaper than on FM. The areas to

the far left or right of the dial are a good place to start off your

search. Sometimes, just a scan will do it.

Listening to the Navajo stations is something I'm going to do on our

Rt 66 trip in the fall.

I remember some great listening we did back in '95 when we cruised

western Louisiana and heard those great Cajun/zydeco stations. One

frequency in New Orleans played nothing but jazz and other 'Nawlins

influenced music.

Another great trip was along US 52 in southern Ohio, along the Ohio

River. It was just about gloaming and the shadows were casting and

the hills looming above made the station playing nothing but

bluegrass just seem to be right.

The Florida Keys have especially great stations. You can find out

all that's going on and hear some great fishing programs.

What we need now is for some of you road people to give your ideas

and especially any special shows available while travelling. Giving

some numbers would be helpful as well. I didn't write them down on

our trips, I now wish I had. Perhaps, there are even some good

parent-kid stories out there.

Keep on Down that Two Lane Highway and Keep Tuned In. --RoadDog.

Guest Jennifer

Regardless of the validity of the arguments of the two sides of the

debate regarding the posting of the Tribune article, I am not going

to address in this posting; I'm closing this from further discussion

due to the tone this thread has taken.

Debate and discussion are fine, but must be civil...we have strict

rules against the sort of comments made here this afternoon, as we

wish to maintain a good environment here for the benefit of all

members.

Because personal views often differ, please familiarize yourself with

our SPEED LIMITS, which set boundaries and explain the atmosphere we

hope to maintain.

-New members will be approved and moderated for a short time until a

history of appropriate posts is established. We welcome new members;

unfortunately, we've started this policy to protect the group and

prevent spam.

-NO FLAMING! Flaming is any derogatory or insulting remark directed

at another list member. This doesn't necessarily include comments

critical of persons outside the list, however, such as actions by

those who would destroy roadside landmarks. Remember, the list isn't

a battleground for personal arguments. Acts of flaming will generate

a reminder. Continued infractions will result in banishment.

-Keep your posts on topic. Off-topic posts should be sparing and

labeled OFF-TOPIC.

-No profanity & off-color jokes.

-Kindly keep posts road-related and aimed at the group in general

rather than one person. Private email should be used for one-on-one

chat.

-Computers have made us lazy but we ask that you please make a real

effort to only include parts of a prior message pertinent to your

response. Simply hitting "reply" wastes space and forces everyone to

scroll through threads that may get long.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping this list a great place to

visit.

when you cruise through St. Louis, three stations worth tuning into are KDHX

(88.1 FM) our local public access station which plays a wide variety of

music (including great blues from 4-6 p.m. M, W-F and a great cajun show 4-6

p.m on Tues) and WEW AM 770 perhaps the most eclectic batch of ethnicity you

will find anywhere (great Polka show on Sundays!). Finally, hats off to

WESL, 1490 AM, a wonderful soul, R and B and blues station out of East St.

Louis with some of the greatest DJ's you will find anywhere.

Proposition for a thread: what are your favorite stations to listen to out

on the road or in your town? I would like to know whats good to listen to up

and down the road...Tsingtao Kip
