Regarding "Whose Names Are Unknown" - it's available thru amazon.com (why

not!!!)

I sometimes wonder if there is any book amazon doesn't have access too.

I recently found another title, subject being life in the 1930's and 1940's

depression era oil fields. As I recall, since the book is in Maine and I'm in

Memphis, the title was "Diddy Wah Diddy". I bought it from Amazon or Allibris,

tho a search for it just now didn't bring it up.

Wilson Pickett-- Sang such great roadsongs as "Mustang Sally",

and "In the Midnight Hour". Called the Wicked Pickett either for

his way of singing are off-stage antics. His CD is on my jukebox of

top-ever albums, which will give you a good idea of how I rate his

music. The movie "The Commitments" was about an Irish band's

struggles to play that great southern soul music. Pop a Pickett CD

in and get ready for some good driving. He was 66. Interesting. I

did some great cruising and partying to his music back in the

sixties.

Sanora Babb-- Talk about your day late and dollar short. She wrote

a highly acclaimed book on the migrants from the Great Plains during

the Dust Bowl era which was scheduled to be published, except

someone else beat her to it, and her manuscript was put on the

shelf. Only recently, was "Whose Names Are Unknown" published. I

have not read it, but have heard it is quite good. Probably, the

only person I can think of with as bad of luck would be Elisha Gray

of Highland Park, Illinois, whose patent for the telephone was

beaten to Washington by a couple of hours. That is why we have Bell

Telephone instead of Gray Telephone.

By the way, the fellow who beat her book to publishing was J.S., or

John Steinbeck, to you and me. His book was "The Grapes of Wrath."

Perhaps we wouldn't have the moniker "Mother Road." I wonder what

she called it? She was 98.

Donald Fry-- founded the Fry supermarket chain in Arizona and

California. He opened his first store after World War II. I have

not been out to these two states yet, so am not familiar with these

stores, but I admire anyone who builds his own business from the

ground up.

Jim Gary-- Mr. Dinosaur out in the New Jersey area. He created

many excellent dinosaur scultures out of junk 50s to 70s car parts

and I believe even had an exhibition at the Smithsonian. I

absolutely love to be driving down the road and look to side to see

something you don't usually see. His work fits the bill. If I ever

get out to New Jersey, I'll definitely get out to see his stuff.

Several of his pieces are on display at a children's park in Camden,

and, I believe by his home. He was 66.

Feel free to add anything else you know about these people.

So, I haven't missed any route 40 messages then. Too

bad.... evidently a lot of the roadies are coming over to

this group. That's not a bad thing. Yes, and I agree with

you that should bring a coast to coast walker some hot

java. Geez, that's pretty brave doing it in the Winter.

Remember, Mark (the Perfesser), he did it from early spring

to fall. That's gotta be a little easier, although Mark

may have started when the temps were in the thirties some

nights in the Appalachians, too.

Thanks for the information. I have several thousand albums and 45s

and would love to find a way to put them on CDs. Until now, I

wasn't sure how I'd go about it. Just proves that if you wait long

enough, it will come. Wasn't there a movie about that at one time?

I have a 200 disc CD player and love it, however, many friends are

almost driven to violence because I am prone to doing the guy thing

with the remote.

Now, I'll be able to hear that great stuff, some never pressed onto

a CD while I cruise those great old roads.

NOTE: You may have seen part of this ditty already; if you did, the stuff I

typed to day starts at "Part II")

Quinn, Natalie and I chose the coldest weekend of the year to trek the

Lincoln Highway from Dixon IL to Aurora, IL....cold as it was, it was a

blast!

Before Hitting the Lincoln, we trekked across the awesome old US 51 bridge

at LaSalle Peru...then took US 6 through LaSalle, an old industrial town on

the Illinois River...stopped at Abe's L-P Family Restaurant in LaSalle for

some excellent grub in what had to have been an old Lums! Got some flavor

from one of the patrons, who complained about the fish, but ate the fish,

then attracted Natalie's attention with a nice belch (bringing a "warm"

reaction from Natalie)! Two buildings down we found an awesome piece of

signage at Rudy's Liquors (a bit of eclecticism in and of itself)...several

cool buildings don Route 6 before you hit the "ugly" road (I-39)...

After a few minutes on the interstate, got off to hit the Lincoln (SR 38)

at Rochelle...on the way West, we cruised through Rochelle on to Ashton...a

cute little town with several old buildings from the Lincoln Highway

era...here, we followed the "original route" for a spell, till we got to the

gravel and saw nothing but ice! Took a minute for a photo op, admired the

scenery, and moved on...

From Ashton we followed 38 to Franklin Grove...enroute you come across 4 of

the highway markers placed by the Boy Scouts...they are in amazingly good

conditon!

Part II

Got to Franklin Grove, which is a neat little hamlet chok full of the

Lincoln Highway--complete with highway markers painted on electric poles.

The downtown area is very picturesque, and there you will find the HI

Lincoln Building, the National H'qarters of the Lincoln Highway Association.

Had a nice conversation with the proprietor, who was prepping the place for

some music that evening...it has been a labor of love fixing the place up,

but is in excellent shape for a building that is 246 years old!

On the way out of Franklin Grove, got some pix of an old bridge tressell

outside of town and a piece of old highway leading to it...it was here that

I realized that I did not take the laws of self preservation seriously

enough--it was about zero, and my fingers had pretty much lost all sense of

feeling by the time I got back to the car...the day they come up with gloves

that allow your hands to actually function I will be happy!

Got to Dixon that evening; stayed at a marvelous Comfort Inn just outside of

town! For under $60 we got a suite with two TV's; since it was an icebox

outside, Quinn and I kicked back, Natalie watched her TV, we all had pizza

and went to bed with a smile!

Saturday, we toured Dixon, which is a real pretty little river town with the

coolest Arch north of the MO/Ark Border (and I include our Gateway Arch in

that equation)! Behind the Arch is the Nachusa House, reputed to be the

oldest Hotel in Illinois and across the street is the old Lee County CH--an

awesome structure, as are most of the old Courthouses in Illinois! (across

the street is the "new" Lee County Courthouse, which makes one wonder why

the dumped the "old")...just down the street on the right hand side you will

find a chunk of the Berlin Wall which is pretty cool...across the river is a

statue of Abe Lincoln, reputed to be the only one with Lincoln in uniform...

We headed East from Dixon back to Rochelle, where we saw the awesomely

restored Standard Station and Rochelle's cool little downtown, complete with

the "Hub" Theatre and its great marquee! Left Rochelle and headed east,

stopping at Malta to honor the "seedling mile" (without the marker, you

wouldn't know there was anything significant here), and cruising through

DeKalb, where Quinn reminised about her college days visiting a friend she

had there (Quinn was raised in nearby St. Charles, IL). We headed from

there to Quinn's brother's house in Batavia; her brother took me on a tour

of the Lincoln from Geneva to Aurora, the end result being the awesomely

restored Lincoln Highway Shelter in Phillips Park in Aurora...it is a very

good idea to have a good map of Aurora before trekking the Lincoln through

Aurora; it winds all over the place there!

All in all the three of us had a great time! I posted a slew of pictures

(Lincoln Highway Trek and Lincoln Highway Trek II-V) in the Photos Section

of the American Road Website in the "photos" section...enjoy! Tsingtao, Kip

Anybody remember the radio station out of Del Rio, Texas, back in the

50's?? Send your cards and letters to Jesus, thats J E S U S, care of this

radio station. XREF, in Del Rio, Texas.

Yeah, the station was in Del Rio - the transmitter was across the

border in Mexico and I think they were shoving about 250,000 watts in the

flower pots over there. They were called "Border Blasters!!" We could pick

them up, clear as a bell, most nights clear up in New England!!!!!!!! Lots

of good music of all types.

Those were some wild times along the border back then. I remember my

dad, who was a ham radio operator, complaining about the Mexican ham's who

would run their amature radio rigs off those big 250,000 watt

transmitters - those cats could broadcast to Mars and beyond with those

rigs.

I've found that guitar-rock with trebly guitar and cracking drums

seem to do best on road trips. Some of my favorite rock albums of

this ilk are "Girlfriend" by Matthew Sweet, "Listen Like Thieves" by

INXS, "Happy Town" by Tim Krekel, "Echo" by Tom Petty & the

Heartbreakers, "Unchained" by Johnny Cash, and "Talk is Cheap" by

Keith Richards.

I've also listened to the Navajo radio stations in Arizona. One of

the big dogs out there is KTNN 660 AM, Voice of the Navajo Nation.

It's where I heard traditional Navajo songs go back-to-back with

Creedence Clearwater Revival. Very cool. I've also taken a shine to

American Indian music artist Bill Miller (his greatest-hits album is

on iTunes). Miller isn't Navajo; he's from Wisconsin. But he seems to

do a better job balancing folk, rock and American Indian music than

anyone out there.

Yeah,Jim, I saw that in the internet piece I found. Let me see if I can find

it again. Well, here's a good history of the whole affair:

http://www.ominous-valve.com/xerf.html

Long article - but the meat about how it came about with the Wolfman and

how it led up to his participation starts with the paragraph "Fire From Below"

- the Wolfman Jack paragraph follows under "Howlin' From the South."

I remember my

dad, who was a ham radio operator, complaining about the Mexican ham's who

would run their amature radio rigs off those big 250,000 watt

transmitters - those cats could broadcast to Mars and beyond with those

rigs.

U.S. 54 from western Illinois to eastern Kansas. It worked quite well.

Guest Kevin Mattice

After reading many of the posts regarding this topic.

I found a song that connects me with the road. If you get a chance

listen to:

George Straits - "Road Less Traveled"

There's a road a winding road that never ends

Full of curves lessons learned at every bend

Goin's rough unlike the straight and narrow

It's for those who go against the grain

Have no fear dare to dream of a change live to march to the beat of a

different drummer

And it all might come together

And it all might unraveled

On the road less traveled

For the road less traveled ain't for the faint of heart

For those who choose to play it safe and never stray too far

Me I want to live my life and one day leave my mark

And it all might come together

And it all come unraveled

On the road less traveled

I've chosen a pathway I may not endure

One thing's for certain nothing for sure

And it all might come together

And it all might come unraveled

On the road less traveled

For the road less traveled ain't for the faint of heart

For those who choose to play it safe and never stray too far

Me I want to live my life and one day leave my mark

And it all might come together

And it all come unraveled

On the road less traveled

I bet there are some great stories on roads and radio that could be

penned for the American Road Magazine, hint, hint. :-) Let's see

some, please.

The group Los Super 7 has a 2005 CD entitled "Heard It On the X":

http://www.lossuperseven.com

Great book about the X stations:

Border Radio: Quacks, Yodelers, Pitchmen, Psychics, and Other

Amazing Broadcasters of the American Airwaves

Amazon link for synopsis: http://tinyurl.com/l7msz

Nowadays, I love driving the Texas roads near the border and

listening to conjunto music.

does anyone have XM Satellite Radio? Since I'm growing weary of

stations playing the same 30 songs and the new oldies station playing

stuff from the 80's (no joking!), I thought I'd look at this as an

alternative. I've been in the process this winter of restoring ole blue

(http://circlecitycorvairs.tripod.com/id27.html) and decided to look at

a new stereo system while the car's in pieces. At Mal-Wart, their

stereos on display are hooked up to XM and that's what caused me to

look into XM. I especially like the various "Decades" channels of music

they have (40's, 50's, 60's, etc). Any of you had any experience with

it & if so, is it worth the $12.95/month?

Yes---I love it and definitely feel it is worth the $12.95 a month(maybe

a little less on a yearly subscription.) I am a broadway showtune lover

and that type of music is almost never available on conventional radio

so when I could get an entire channel with nothing but broadway I went

for it. The dj's are literate too and the chat is intelligent. XM is

also available on the web and a car subscription gives you access to XM

on the web at no additional charge.

It should also be pointed out that *excerpts* of copyrighted material

That's a great song, Kevin! I'll have to look for it.

I'm a bit surprised no one had mentioned "Ramblin' Man" by the Allman

Brothers. With a line like "I was born in the back seat of a

Greyhound bus rollin' down Highway 41", it's a natural:)

Mainline Florida by Eric Clapton

and

Gator Country by Molly Hatchet

when out on the road.

One fun road in that area is FM 1314 between Cedar Park and Mineral

Wells going past Key Largo. Fun, lots of curves but not as many since

they straighten the road some.

Channel 2 out of Houston had at one time printed a series of guides for

all of Texas from their News Magazine "The Eyes of Texas" Maybe they

are still in print.

Have fun.

Just added a photo of one of the Renault Winery Bottles.

Not quite the giant "Cat Soup" bottle, but it's a bit of fun.

I noticed. We also have not one, but two giant "roadside men" here.

Hope to get a few shots of those very soon. Always looking for the

often obscure examples of "Googie Architecture" as well.
