Slim,

Arrived home from a great road trip/vacation Sunday night. Stopped at many

places you mentioned, thanks for the tips. We were fortunate enough to get to

tour the barber shop/museum in Julesberg. The owner was most gracious, giving us

the run of the place & even giving us background info on many items. A most

hospitable individual, unfortunately, I've forgotten his name.

The Genoa Tower was an interesting stop, a bit creepy I might add. We had to

travel the superslab at that point & driving by, it appeared people were in the

tower enjoying the view. Stopping,

we found 3 vehicles that hadn't moved in ages & filled with stuff. The sign to

the museum said open,

the door was open but no lights were on & no one was around. It too was filled

with stuff. The "people" I thought I saw in the tower were dressed mannequins

with tattered clothing that waved in the strong wind. I thought of Norman Bates'

mother. A couple of pictures were taken & we got back on the road. Quickly!

I found some great old alignments on the drive back. We traveled on dirt,

gravel, a bit of brick, original concrete both semi-pristine & nearly

undrivable. We followed the old alignment I marked out

as much as time & driving conditions allowed. One exciting "discovery" was a

bridge on an apparent gravel PPOO alignment that had a duplicate a few miles

farther on an original narrow concrete section that is named Old U.S. 36. I

believe this was in western Missouri. (My notes are at home.)

It seems that driving across Missouri on the PPOO U.S. 36 corridor must be what

it was like to drive U.S. 66 back in the sixties. They appear to be gradually

converting it to Interstate & we drove

on all combinations of roads. 2-lane became 4-lane back to 2-lane, then they

became limited access & back to 2-lane.

Hey Ted,

I would be very interested in any details of your PPOO trip. I collect

PPOO ephemera, but never drove it, or took the time out to map

the old alignment details.

I took a similar trip a few years back - I drove US 24 from SE Michigan

to Manitou Springs to go to the Society for Commercial Archeology

National Conference in Manitou Springs. The Colorado / Manitou

Springs area is the ultimate tourist trap - be sure to take the cog train

up Pikes Peak (don't drive it first as funny things can happen at 14,000+

feet), Garden of the Gods, Santa's Village, and perhaps 60 or more

vintage cabin camps and motels lovingly maintained by their new Polish

and Russian emigre owners. The conference was headquarted at the

Rainbow Lodge. I couldn't get a room there as it was booked solid, so

I stayed a few places down at the formerly named Okla-Tex Court - the

first place in the area to have indoor plumbing. Make sure you drive the

whole way E - W through towns on Old 24 - Colorado Ave. and N - S

on Old 85 - Nevada Ave. and bring lots of film.

If you are taking US 24 back part ways be sure to stop at the Genoa

Tower in Genoa, CO - a great old tourist trap tower - see six states!

http://ican.editthispage.com/genoatower/

It used to front right on US 24 but it is long gone and now backs on

I-70.

Also, before I forget, when you leave Big Springs, NE the first town

into CO is Julesburg. The barber in town is located in the old Ford

Garage - which he has turned into a mini-museum with cars, Oregon

Trail, Lincoln Highway and Julesburg memorabilia. He's only open

a few days a week when he cuts hair - ask anybody on the street

where it's at.

Hit that road!

yer pal,

slim

Ken,

Sorry I haven't responded until now, I had already abandoned my computer by the

time you posted.

I hate to admit it, but we passed by the geographical center although we did

stop near by. They have historical markers along 36 telling the traveler that

the geo-center is nearby. Kathy took my picture by the sign but we decided not

to search out the real spot due to time constraints. (It seems I often have that

time constraint problem-too many photos & too many old alignments I think.)

Greetings Ted,

Since you will be returning home on US 36, be sure to make a stop at

the "Geographical Center of the Conterminous United States", which

will be 2 miles north of US 36, just outside of Lebanon, Kansas. Not

much there except a marker, flagpole and flag, small chapel (which is

very, very cool), an abandoned motel, and a picnic pavillion. Just

being there in the center is an awesome feeling. Great place to kick

back for a packed lunch and have some total peace and quiet for a bit.

Have a great and safe adventure! Travel on!

God Bless and Happy Trails.

P.S. LHA stands for the Lincoln Highway Association, right? At first,

I thought that you were cruising on the association. (;D

My system was infected, had been crashing right-and-left for a several days but

is working fine now.

This virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee antivirus

systems.

The virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system.

It is sent automatically by messenger and by the address book, whether or not

you have sent email to your contacts.

Here is how to check for the virus and how to get RID of it (takes about 2

minutes):

1. Go to Start, click on Search or Find optiom

2. In file folder option, type the name jdbgmgr.exe

3. Be sure you search you C: drive , all subfolders and any other drives you may

have.

4. Click "Find Now"

5. The Virus has a Teddy Bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe--DO NOT OPEN IT!

6. Go to EDIT (on the Menu bar) and choose "Select All" to highlight the file

without opening it.

7. Now go to File (on the Menu bar) and select Delete. It will then go to the

recycle Bin (clear/empty the bin)

8. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK SO

THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOK.

a. Open a new email message

b. Click the address book icon next to the "TO"

c. Highlight every name and add to "BCC" (blind carbon copy)

Friends-

This is not a virus it is a hoax. It is a good idea to check any

virus warnings out at one of the many virus hoax sites before

deleting anything on your computer. I use the Trend site and the

F-secure site.

-Becky R.

http://www.f-secure.com/virus-info/hoax/

The following information is a segment from

http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/hoaxes/hoax.asp

---------------------

Description

JDBGMGR.EXE is the Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java. It uses an

icon of a bear.

The contents of the hoax message vary, but it advises Hotmail users

of an email virus, jdbgmgr.exe, that is spreading via MSN Messenger.

This message is a hoax, and Trend Micro advises users to not forward

it.

If you have accidentally deleted the file in question, you may visit

Microsoft Product Support for recovery procedures for various

Microsoft Operating Systems.

Greetings Allen,

Due to server difficulties tonight, Dona "Misty Owl" asked me to

forward her reply to your E-Group post:

If your computer is crashing a lot, it is probably the Blaster virus.

The teddy bear/jdjgmgr is NOT a virus. It is program that comes

installed on Windows. This hoax has been making the rounds for some

time. Please do not forward that message to everyone in your address

book ;-) When your friends find out they have deleted the file, they

will be wanting to know how to replace it. There IS a file that was

making the rounds that says it is the replacement file for the jdgmgr

bug, but is in fact a virus. This is a two-part hoax/virus.

If you're out west, mostly in California with a few places in Arizona and

Nevada, have a burger, fries and shake or Coke at an In-N-Out Burger. In fact,

that's all you can have as that's all they sell. They go to great lengths to

let folks know that they cut their own potatoes, leaf their own lettuce, slice

their own onions and tomatoes, and it's all done on site, in sight of the

customers. They also advertise that there are no microwaves or steam tables to

be found in any of their restaurants.

They just moved into Arizona a couple of years ago, having been in California

for the previous 50 or so years.

Check out their web site at http://www.in-n-out.com/.. You see people wearing

their t-shirts all over this part of the country.

The food at the Crossroads is OK ... typical Midwestern fare, including

horseshoes. The decor and atmosphere are exceptional ... looks like something

from

the early 1960s. Kudos also for having Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins on the

jukebox.

The Rock Cafe, however, is terrific. Dawn has learned her lessons of

multiethnic cuisine very well. It doesn't matter what I order at the Rock Cafe

-- I

know it will be very good or excellent. I think the quality of food there

matches many higher-priced restaurants. The Rock Cafe is one of the treasures of

the

Hi All,

Recently my daughter took a road trip from her home in Memphis, TN, to

the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She took one of her older

Rottweilers, Lady, with her.

I noticed, after I posted the URL for my daughters,

er, Lady's, web site that the URL split into two lines

- here it is again, and if it splits you'll have to

highlite and paste it into your address window.

Denny,

If you're ever in the San Diego area again, another great road to take eastbound

from San Diego is California 78. You can pick it up at I-5 just north of town

and take it all the way through the mountains, through the towns of Ramona,

Santa Ysabel and Julian, and into the desert past the Salton Sea and north to

just west of Blythe where it runs into I-10. Or you can head south at Brawley

on California 86 to intersect with I-8 at El Centro. Both routes give you a

great choice of scenery across the southern part of the state.

Following up on another great Landrunner suggestion, I just drove US

80 from Phoenix to El Cajon. If there had been no time constraints, I

would have driven on to Balboa but when it became quite "citified", I

peeled off to visit friends. After a stint on Calif. 94 (a

wonderfully curvy surprise) my return was largely on I-8 with a

couple of side trips to see thing I had missed. The tale is at

Guy,

Once again you have out done yourself. The ‘What’s New’ section of our web

site showing the Flagstaff meeting and the Kingman event are great. For all

those friends of ours that could not make it to Arizona for these two events

are able to see and read a little of what went on at them. You and Dennis

are for sure the eyes and ears of the road. Every event or get together that

is held on the road should have the two of you there to record it for

posterity. I was at both places and still found your photos and text to be

of interest. I look forward to viewing Dennis’s tape as well.

I want to thank you publicly and say that with out your recording the events

that we have done the last few years they would not have been as successful

as they were. Your professionalism, passion and friendship take us to

another level. You enrich all of our lives by your work and generosity.

Back-Road Haunts, Along Georgia's Coast

By CHRIS DIXON

SPEEDING down Interstate 95, you can easily drive from

Savannah, Ga., to Kingsland and the Florida state line in a

couple of hours. But those blessed with time can take the back

roads from Tybee Island, the northernmost in a chain of barrier

islands along Georgia's Atlantic Coast, and move a lot slower.

The low-country landscape is one of marsh and pine, palmetto

and live-oak forests, and even the local roads bypass most of

the islands (there are bridges to only three of the many islands

in this 100-mile stretch), leaving them protected and pristine.

They are places with names like Wassaw, Ossabaw,

Blackbeard and Sapelo. On this stretch, even a weekend trip can

seem like a journey to places untouched by time, with the croaks

and buzzsaws of frogs and crickets and the spooky hoot of the

whippoorwill calling like ghosts from the past. . . .

GREETINGS FROM AMERICAN ROAD!

I've been hearing from some of you over the past week. We

appreciate your e-mails and phone calls! We've been busy

processing gift subscription orders, Hitching Post orders, and

updating addresses for those of you that moved over the past

few months. I even had the privilege of processing a gift

subscription for a couple celebrating over 50 years of marriage (I

hope to be that lucky someday!).

A few of you have called to check on the status of your Winter 04

copy of AMERICAN ROAD. It should be arriving in your mailboxes

any day--if it hasn't arrived already. If you do not receive your copy

by the beginning of next week (and you subscribed before

October 15)--please let me know and we will send a

replacement pronto.

You will find the announcement of the Two-Lane Trivia contest

CHRISTMASTOWN, USA

Featured on ABC's Good Morning America and dubbed

Christmastown USA by journalist Charles Kuralt, McAdenville

will once again provide visitors with a breath of fresh, Yuletide

air. 2004 will mark the 49th year Pharr Yarns, the textile company

that built the small town around one of its mills, has

orchestrated the Christmastown USA display of over 500,000

miniature lights.

There has always been more spirit than money in McAdenville.

The majority of the 600 residents are employees of Pharr Yarns.

Despite financial distress that has plagued the town in recent

years, its residents continue to spread holiday cheer; a tradition

that lured over 500,000 vehicles through the small town last

year.

The Christmastown USA display will run December 1- 26, 2004.

For more information, call (704) 824-3190.

SANTA'S WORKSHOP

How many of you have ever had an inquiry from a youngster to

visit Santa in his workshop?

You may have taken the wide-eyed tot to a mall to have their

picture taken with the jolly elf. Next time you encounter a

youngster (or one of us older folk looking for some holiday

magic!) consider a trip instead to Santa's Workshop in North

Pole, New York. Yes, you heard correctly. Santa's Workshop

opened its doors in July of 1949.

The seeds of imagination that resulted in the building of this

fantacy village came about when a father told his young daughter

about a baby bear whose adventures led him to discover Santa

Claus and his North Pole Workshop. The child's plea to visit this

fantasy world led Julian Reiss, a Lake Placid businessman, to

construct the frozen, year-round attraction on Whiteface

Mountain.

up about 2 miles of 11 - getting back to 81 took about 10 miles

going south on 11 - what a great slalom race course!!! We've talked

about curvy roads - this qualifies in spades.

Trip from Maine to Memphis took 22 hours over 3 days of terrible

weather. At one point, the first day, we messed up, missing 33

south from E. Stroudsburg to Reading. So we went west on I-80 to I-

81 and south. At one point traffic was reduced to 35 mph in driving

snow - at that point it was nearly 4PM so we decided to call it a

day in Fracksville, PA, - about an hour north of Harrisburg. Such

is life.

Perhaps we will be able to cover U S 11 thru Virginia on the way

back to New England the end of January - weather permitting.

Y'all have a wonderful Christmas - maybe everybody will get some

of those old highway guide books in your stockings.

I would like to make a coffee table book on Highway 41, admittedly

because I was born about three blocks away from it, but that won't be

in the book.

What will be? My working subtitle is "The Official Highway of the

National Football League." It starts in Miami, right about where Pro

Player Stadium is (this Cub fan will leave out any references to the

Marlins), goes through Tampa, about a block from James Stadium (my

first name is Raymond's last), Atlanta, Nashville, Indianapolis,

then, saving the best for last, Chicago and Green Bay, which are

probably the subject of some good books by themselves. 41 also runs

half a mile from Milwaukee County Stadium, which was torn down even

though the good people of Milwaukee voted AGAINST Miller Park. Twice.

The Packers played half their home games there from 1965 to 1999.

It's not too far from that seminal influence that every true football

fan knows, whether they love it or hate it, called Notre Dame, and

I'd like to do a book on Jesse Harper, who coached Knute Rockne as a

player, and worked as ND's athletic director while Rockne coached.

Guidebooks are few and far between, since 41 isn't too historical in

it's own right, but I have maps already. Now all I need is the

independence to go on the road trip, and a good camera.

See you all down the road a piece. I'm also working on a disguise

that will get me some Milk Duds at Lou Mitchell's (women get them for

stopping in, but not men). I dated my wife exclusively when she got

me a hand drawn map by Bob Waldmire, of Route 66 fame. His dad, Ed

Waldmire, invented the Corn Dog on Route 66. The stand, Co-Z Dogs

(pronounced Cozy Dogs) is still running as far as I know.

Hi......

Highway 41 runs about 6 blocks from my house in the burbs north of Chicago. I

have driven it to where it ends in North Michigan because my son attends

Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI.....on the shores of beautiful

Lake Superior.

You can still get a shot and a beer for $2 and a glass of wine is $1.50. NMU is

also the site of one of the Olympic Development Centers....truly God's

country......and a fun town.

Has a truely majestic cathedral in the heart of town.....

Hi Kevin, Thomas and all you other roadies,

Sorry that it has taken me this long to make my comments known. My laptop's

mother board crashed; of course it happened three months after the warranty

ran out. Although I have since replaced the laptop all my old data was gone.

Or so I thought, it seems some items that were in a pending file were saved.

This being one of them so I will now add my thoughts to this theme.

Sorry that I did not also post here about the upcoming trip to DC. I will

see that all future e-mails will be posted to this group.

Also Kevin please NO Mr. Conkle, I go by many names but Jim is the correct

one. And as a fellow roadie and friend even 'ol buddy' will do.

I too have felt that sometimes e-mails seem to be 'laying down the

gauntlet', challenging someone's point of view and even at times they may

sound hateful. Knowing most of these folk's passion, love and devotion to

the road we must sometimes step back before making judgments. All of us!

We may not all agree on every issue but we do agree on the most important

ones it seems.

Take care and have great holidays.

Subject: Re: [AMERICAN_ROAD] AMERICAN ROAD and PRESERVATION

I am that individual that stated that this email list does not mention much

in the way of preservation on it's main page.

Reread my post.

Tom, where in my post did it state that I was talking about the magazine?!

My statement said that nowhere on the main page of this yahoogroup does it

have a statement of preservation.

My post was in regard to the necessity of triple posting due to hurt

feelings, egos & what was exchanged on the 66 list. Ok, so I may drop the

term 'editorial differences' which probably should have been stated "posting

differing point of views". However, that was exactly the reason that some

people left the 66 group last July. I tried to point out that the 66 group

doesn't seem to have the issues it may have had. I was hoping that maybe

those who left the 66 list may consider coming back.

My efforts didn't seems to work. It seems that a lot got 'read into' my

first post on this group.

Some posts that are not being crossed post, just to name 3 items:

1. Mr. Conkle posted on the Route66 list about getting a group to go

Washington DC campaign trip in February 2004 about 66 preservation funds. I

wonder why he didn't post here?

2. There has been active discussion of National Trust & Historic

Preservation. Topic came about in the discussion of the sale of the Boots &

what may happen if a large retailer is involved with it's purchase.

3. Sale of Amboy originally posted on 11/26/03.

These 3 topics should be enough for list members here to try the 66 list.

Also, Tom, the few people that did respond to my post, I replied in direct

emails to them. This was to keep this list uncluttered. I will gladly

share those emails on this list, if you like.

Again, my posts have said nothing of you or the magazine or anyone

associated with your publication.

Kevin

P. S. Do I subscribe to your periodical? No, as far as any magazine, I look

at an issue or 2 before subscribing.

To the individual who thinks AMERICAN ROAD does not care about

preservation, I pose only one question: Have you ever read our

Yo:

We had our "last meal" at Spencers yesterday...had to have the

"special"--salisbury steak and mashed potatoes w/vegatable....took in the

place and got pics inside and out! It was sad, sadder than HoJos or the

Parkmoor...everyone was talking about how sad it was that the place was

closing and how they'd been coming there since they were so high...my

favorite waitress was there. Heather has been there for 10 years and if

there was a poster child for a waitress on Route 66 she would be it! She'll

chat it up with anyone about anything and its always "what can I getcha,

dear"...hopefully all will work out for her...I looked about for memorabilia

and they don't have the usual suspects...they usually had their menu copied

but were out of it...I have, however, a copy of the menu which I am going to

look for; if I find it I will send it to anyone who wants one (like you,

landrunner)...just get me your name and address...I contacted the Post

Dispatch and I think Kirk Johnson contacted Channel 2 news, so hopefully

Spencer's won't go silently into the night...happy eating! Tsingtao, Kip

Yo Unkle Chesty,

Why you smooth talker you can call me anything but late for dinner.

Hope you have been up to no good as usual. I am still waiting for the sequel

to the book.

Take care and have great holidays.
