  1. We encountered a problem this morning w/ two guests posting SPAM to one of our member's photo gallery. As a result - we are removing some of the guest privileges related to viewing images. They should still be able to see them and search. However, rating and commenting on images has been removed as a guest privilege. I am open to discussion on this -- but, sadly, think that we do need to take these measures to protect the Forum from further SPAM attacks.

We have banned the IP addresses of the individuals responsible for the SPAM. And, we are working on removing the comments from the gallery.

    Comments and suggestions are welcome.

    Best,

    Becky

  2. I strongly suspect some type of virus activity, Becky. Update the definitions on your PC and do a scan at the very least. No need to apologize....right away I knew that couldn't have been you sending six newsletters in one day. ;)

Thanks for your understanding! Computers are great - when they work correctly!

  3. Greetings. I just opened my mail box to find multiple newsletters sent from our account. However, it was not sent by us. I do not know how these messages were sent. I am working with our webmaster to find out exactly what happened.

You have our apologies for this inconvenience. We are working to correct this problem immediately.

    Sincerely,

    Becky Repp, General Manger

  4. Hi everyone! My name is Michele. Obviously new here. I was born and have lived in Indiana all of my life. I grew up loving road trips. I remember a particular trip to Maine where I sat in the front seat of the family station wagon between my parents and had a map of my own that I followed as we drove.

I've always preferred a road trip when possible but have never taken one that was focused specifically on a road. That changes this spring. We will be hitting the road and driving US 6. Because of a variety of reasons we are splitting the trip into two separate trips. We will head west from Indiana and drive all the way to Long Beach. Later this fall we will finish our journey by heading east to Cape Cod.

Having grown up just a mile off of US 6 in Indiana, I'm familiar with that part of it but would love any tips on things to see if you've been there, done that.

    Hi Michele,

Welcome aboard! And, welcome to all the rest of the new Forum members. I apologize for not posting for a while -- it's been really busy in the American Road offices.

US 6: A few tips - Be sure to contact the US Route 6 Tourist Association. There is a link to them on our Resources page: http://www.americanroadmagazine.com/resources/resources.html

Also, Joe Hurley, a contributing editor to American Road magazine, writes a regular column for us on US Route 6. Additionally, a few years ago, Joe and the photographer who accompanied him on his cross-country walk on US Route 6, did an overview article on US Route 6 (I believe it was in our Summer 2005 issue). You may find the articles useful in helping plan your trip. There is an electronic index of all of our back issues created by American Road subscriber and Forum Member Rick Etchells.

Personally, I've been on some great stretches of US 6 (and some bypassed alignments of US 6) in Utah and Nevada. I highly recommend them!

    Take care and safe travels!

  5. I would say my most treacherous trip was coming home from Cinci a few years ago. It was two days before Christmas and I heard that snow was forecast (ALLOT of snow). If I didn't leave right away, I wasn't going to make it home for the holiday. I started home, and snow had already started to fly. Eight inches came down by the time I hit Dayton. People were going under 15 miles an hour on I-75. People trying to pull off the road - all ended up in the ditch. The wiper blades kept icing up and I had to periodically grab the blades (while driving) and snap them so that they would keep working. I was really glad when I FINALLY got to Toledo and the snow had let up (some 8 hours later).

It was also my first time driving in snow in more than 13 years! Needless to say, I was pretty stressed out.

  7. This email (posted below) just came in from the second platoon to whom we sent packages. I confess, I got teary-eyed reading it. I am still overwhelmed by everyone's generosity - making it possible for us to send the packages.

    Thank you!

    Becky

It is citizens and organizations like your's that have definitley boosted our morale and make this deployment a little easier for our Soldiers.

If you could send us your mailing address, we seems to have forgot to save it with all the excitment opening our packages.

  8. It has been pretty quiet at the American Road Garage, what with everyone spending as much time as possible with family and friends

Denny went off on his annual Christmas trip, this time to New Orleans with stops along the way to visit some of the civil rights monuments and sites. Then he connected with Alex in Jackson, Mississippi and did some blues places. The rest of us followed his journey on his web site.

The garage was decked out for the holidays, complete with snowflakes in the office window and red and green ribbons tied on the new tires. Now that we have those credit cards, headquarters sent us down a bunch of punch card receipts with Christmas bows printed on the face. Real festive!

We have been telling each other about the gifts we got for Christmas. Mobilene got a new fancy radio, that receives not only AM but also that new FM frequency. As soon as there are a couple of FM stations on the air, Keep says he may buy one. RoadDog was all excited about his Route 66 calendar, and Dave Reese got some HO model cars for his slot car track.

Cityboy1968 got a new GPS but it “only” has 750,000 points of interest. Poor guy! Then he got a Delorme Atlas to back it up. No chance he’s getting lost! Eyerobic got a new GPS.

etchr66 has started posting. They have been members since the early days, but have just hung out most of the time, until now. Glad to see you with the gang at the garage! And they are experts, having done the whole of Route 66!

Did Becky tell everyone what Thomas got her for Christmas? Seems he is a little short on gift ideas, so he finally asked her before Christmas what she wanted. She said “You can always get me attire. You know a girl always likes attire!”

He didn’t see a reason to get her just one, so he went all the way and bought her four, complete with rims! What a guy!

We mounted them on the rims the night before Christmas, and he put them under the tree Christmas morning. Boy, I bet she was surprised!

Keep the Show on the Road!

Hee, hee, hee! I like that, attire. . .

Actually, I got coffee mugs that he had specially made with artist renderings of my dachshund puppies! (We had to buy the tires earlier in the year.) Now I can drink "liquid asphalt" or "American Roadhouse blend" java in style!

    Happy New Year everyone!

    Becky

  9. Greetings everyone. In order to ensure that folks have an opportunity to submit nominations for this coffee - we are going to open up the nominating process today. We'll hold the vote next Saturday - since it is a holiday week. That way, hopefully, there will be sufficient time for everyone to submit their nomination. You may post your nominations here or email them to me at becky@americanroadmagazine.com.

Best wishes for a safe and Happy Holiday! :D

I'm going to hold off on the vote for this one more week - as the holidays are still upon us. I don't know about you - but, we've had so many holiday functions to attend our heads are spinning!

Be safe and have a Happy New Year everyone!

  10. This just in from one of the platoons:

"Ms. Repp, I would like to Thank You and all the people that supported us with gifts and packages I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas.

    Thank You."

    Sincerely

    Sergeant First Class

    Richard Perez

I've attached the photo that he sent of his platoon, too.

Thanks everyone! Your support for this project made a difference to these soldiers serving their country.

It's time to name that American Road Espresso! Please cast your vote for the name of the new American Road Espresso. If you don't see a name that you like, we enourage you to make a nomination. We will add your nomination to the voting options. The person who nominates the winning entry wins one pound of American Road Espresso.

Voting ends Sunday (December 16, 2007) at midnight.

    Have fun!

  13. Although I don't drink coffee, I would cast me vote for "American Roadhouse." Maybe you should come up with an extended line of coffees and hot chocolates that can named with "catchy' names.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.

    Safe Travels

Great minds must think alike! We are now offering an extended line of coffees. MANY flavors (Hazelnut, Mocha, etc.) and many varieties (French Roast, Brazilian, Espresso, etc.). Hot chocolate and tea is also available! Our next vote is going to be held this upcoming weekend to name our American Road Espresso.

  14. Hi Gang,

Jim Ross supplied me with the number of other folks deployed with Shelly Graham's sister - there are six of them deployed to assist a chaplain. We're sending goodies to all of the soldiers and the chaplain. We'll get their care packages out this week.

THANK YOU EVERYONE! Together we will have shipped to over 40 brave men and women currently serving our country.

    :D Becky

  15. Get your own “Personal American Road Shopping Assistant”

I have discovered a way to do my Christmas shopping from my easy chair. I had a list of terrific items I wanted to buy at the American Road store for friends and family, but the thought of ordering them, waiting for them to arrive, then packing and reshipping each was daunting.

Becky agreed to take my American Road shopping list, and send each package for me, along with a card. And send me a total. My own “shopping assistant!” I thought they were for the rich and famous!

I asked her if she would do this for others...and I think she said “Yes.”

Becky, did I understand you correctly?

Keep the Show on the Road! Dave

PS I got some neat free gifts for me as well...I don’t know exactly why I earned them...but maybe Becky can tell the rest of us how that “free gift” thing works. -

YUP. Happy to help anyone shop (shopping is one of my favorite things to do after traveling America's backroads!).

The FREE gifts: THE WAY IT WORKS: We have an offer of spend $50 and you get a free gift with your order. You spent 50 a few times over - so, a free gift for each $50!
