Hello everyone! You have some GREAT suggestions and are asking some GOOD questions.
Since the topic has been raised, I will let the cat out of the bag. We are pleased to let you know that we are working on a motel/diner guide. It is taking some time, however, as we want to do it right. We welcome your input and help in the project. If you have suggestions, experiences, descriptions, photographs, we welcome them. You may e-mail me at becky@americanroadmagazine.com.
At present, you may find this useful - a short list and a brief description of the motels that have been featured in our Memory Motel department is on our site at http://americanroadmagazine.com/memory_mot...mory_motel.html.
Also, I'm happy to let you know that we do have a list of advertisers on our website - it's accessed via the button in the upper left corner labeled "Request Card" on all of our website pages. You will find their phone number and a hot link to their website on the page. You may also fill out the form at the bottom of the page and request information from all of the advertisers directly through us (eliminating the need for contacting each of them individually). The Request Card may also be accessed by clicking on the white banner on the left side of the page saying "Request FREE information from our Advertisers." AND, beginning with the Spring 07 issue, we are including a Reader Request Card in the magazine - where you may request information by simply circling the number correlated to the advertiser on the ad index in the magazine - and return it to us.
We greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts and suggestions. We are always interested in learning how we might best serve our readers.
Dream well and drive safely on the AMERICAN ROAD!
Best,
Becky Repp

This is indeed sad news. I would encourage anyone that as soon as they catch news that a historic motel is in jeopardy (one that is not too far gone to save) - let us know. We can always start a letter campaign and get media attention for it. Additionallly, we anticipate that the American Road Foundation (which is moving forward) will be able to be of assistance in these matters as well.
Best,
Becky

You are correct - there is quite a story about Meteor Crater, Meteor Crater Observatory, Nininger, Rimmy Jim, and Harry Locke. I love Locke's cartoons of Rimmy Jim . . . there are some reprinted with permission in Romance.
I'm enjoying reading about your trip. . . Keep those posts coming.

Hackberry is great. Good people running the store there. I remember when Bob Waldmire ran the Hackberry Store . . . seems a long time ago now!
For a blast from the past, be sure to stop in at Twisters in Williams. Tell them hello from us.
If you are going to stay another night in Arizona between Williams and Santa Fe, I HIGHLY recommend staying at the La Posada in Winslow. The food at the restaurant is top notch - one of the best meals of my life. It's a blast from the past - they were operating in traditional Fred Harvey fashion during our stay there a few years ago. And, don't forget to stop in at Roadworks - near the famous "Standin' on a Corner." Diane is a sweetheart - and be sure to send our best (you can visit her site right now via the link on our homepage in the bottom left hand corner or via the link on the page for our on-line reader request card ). The Museum in Winslow is a great stop, too. If you've never been to Petrified Forest, it is very worthwhile - 66 used to run right through the park. Too bad some of the old roadside attractions once in that section were demolished. . . I could go on and on about places to see in Arizona and on your way to Santa Fe. But, I don't want to ruin all the fun. But, I will say that another great stop over is the El Rancho in Gallup - a definite must.
Enjoy and be sure to keep us posted and send some pics from your trip!
Boy, I'm flattered to get advise from you! Thanks!I got your post too late to stop at the diner across from the Powerhouse. Shucks! But we did stop at the Powerhouse.
We made it as far as Williams today. We spent time in Kingman and got a few photos of the Beale and the Beckman Hotels, great Route 66 and National Old Trails landmarks, noted in my 1921 Automobile Blue Book. In fact there is an ad in the Blue Book for the Beale with a nice interior photo.
The road between Kingman and Seligman is described in 1921 as …graded to Hackberry, good road through Truxton Canyon to a point 6 miles east of Peach springs, ten miles of poor rough road through canyon near western end of Yavapai county followed by fair to poor going to Seligman… .. Today it is a beautiful, smooth ribbon of asphalt through lovely desert vistas.
At Hackberry we stopped at the General Store run by John Pritchard and his wife. I don’t see why anyone would take the freeway when there are places like this to stop and visit on the American Road! I don’t recall the general store when I came this way in 1962, but it was here. I think John said it was still operating as a general store as late as 1972. John has a nice bookstand of great Route 66 material and tons of memorabilia so I picked up a few items
Places like the Hackberry general store are the equivalent of the roadside attractions that lined our two lane roads in days bygone. A must stop. He has a beautiful Corvette parked out front, and several old gas station pumps outside, plus lots of signs. Reminded me of my days as a gas jockey for Associated (Flying A) in the late 50’s. Out front he has lots of Route 66 items and even an Automobile Club of Southern California National Old Trails sign. Does it get better than this?
We stopped at Vanilla. It was the site of the Truxton Canyon Indian School in 1921. The National Old Trails road ran along beside the Aitcheson Topeka an
d Santa Fe line right in front of the old Indian school. As we were there a Santa Fe freight train screamed by.
We stopped at the Caverns Motel at Grand Canyon Caverns, but the dinosaur was gone. It broke my heart. There was a plywood dinosaur at the entrance, but big boo was no more. We spent the night here in 1962, and the place is as I remembered it, paint job and all, minus the dinosaur. Sadly the motel was closed for the winter, or we would have stayed. Great site!
We may spend another day in Williams. Lots of Route 66 stuff to see and enjoy. If anyone has a suggestion of what to see, let me know. We will head east toward Santa Fe soon, as we have to Keep the Show on the Road!

Hi.
I'm SOOO jealous. I love that stretch of road.
Ok - tell everyone at the Powerhouse hello from American Road.
Take a look at the book Route 66: The Romance of the West (I think they carry it there in Kingman so you can flip through it there)-- you'll find some really cool information about Grand Canyon Caverns in there - it was once going to be Dinosaur City. We stayed at the motel there a few years ago - everything was still up and running at that time. And, I haven't heard anything to the contrary.
Be SURE to stop at Cool Springs - check out their link on our home page (the full banner at the top) it is a restored service station - and also now a museum - out on the stretch toward Oatman. The owner is a great guy and he won a preservation award for his work on the station.
There's a great diner across from the Powerhouse in Kingman - you'll know it when you see it. Really good breakfasts.
Have a wonderful time!
You mean I can remain an auto trails virgin and still get a kick on Route 66? Sounds great (swell) to me. Thanks for the suggestion on a good bookstore in Kingman. I’ll stop there.I did pack my 1921 Arizona, etc Automobile Blue Book so I have the National Old Trails directions and I’ll do my usual Then and Now photos if there is an opportunity.
I went to the web site you suggested and looked at the motel. I think it is the same color it was in 1962! I remember a bigger dinosaur than is in the pictures, but maybe I’m wrong.
Back in ’62 it was a first class stop, and a little spendy for a young couple. I haven’t been on that section of road since then.
Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it, and for helping to Keep the Show on the Road!
Dave

SAVE YOURSELF MONEY AND HEADACHES ON YOUR NEXT TRIP
When you and your family of four are packed in the minivan on the road this holiday season there is a new service that allows you to get information that you need -- for free.
Instead of giving in to the knee jerk need to dial 411, save yourself the buck fifty or more and dial 1-800-Free411 instead. The call is totally free and you receive the same exact database of listings you would have if you had called the old directory assistance number.
Jingle Networks launched this free service in September of 2005 and since then has saved consumers more than $150 Million and has processed over 120 million calls. A recent survey showed that 71 percent of consumers strongly believe 411 services should be free of charge.
The way it works is callers request the number they need and listen to 10-15 seconds of direct advertising spots before connecting to their requested listing. While consumers have learned to tune out most advertising (whether TV or online) as background noise, they will likely be happy to hear the brief spot of commercial since it is usually targeted to exactly the type of listing they had requested.
So say you want the number for Blue Cab in Detroit, you might hear a Red Cab promotional offering of $5 off your next taxi ride across town, that’s even more savings. Some users report up to $20 savings a month by using Free411 services.
AMERICAN ROAD TWO-LANE TRIVIA
The 4th person that responded to me via e-mail with the correct answer to the trivia question (below) won a copy of the DVD "National Park" series by Questar. Discover the treasures of America’s National Parks. Retail value $49.95. The winner is Mike Ward of Mesa, Arizona.
Trivia Question: What is the name of the individual whom the M*A*S*H character Radar O’Reilly, from Ottumwa, Iowa, is likely based on?
Answer: Donald Shaffer
*Special thanks to the QUESTAR for sponsoring the AMERICAN ROAD TWO-LANE TRIVIA QUESTIONS.

ROUTE 66 BICYCLE ODYSSEY
Recently, Jim Ross, co-founder of AMERICAN ROAD Magazine met Michelle Thompson. Jim
reports that Michelle is a 35 year-old Chicagoan who has taken leave of her consulting
business, turned her apartment and her dog over to a house sitter, and has hit the road
on a bicycle journey to spend time with her brother in the Los Angeles area, who has been
suffering from oral cancer for the past two years. Tired of feeling helpless, she finally
decided to take action, so she set up a web site, got some advice on cycling, which prior
to this endeavor she has never done, then bought a bike and pedaled onto Route 66 on
October 21. Her goal is to reach Los Angeles by the Christmas holiday while raising
awareness and money for Oral Cancer Research along the way.
You may visit Michelle’s website at http://www.route2outsmartcancer.com. You may also
make a donation to the Oral Cancer Foundation via her site. AMERICAN ROAD Magazine would
like to assist in Michelle’s valiant efforts by allowing individuals to subscribe to
AMERICAN ROAD and have a portion of the proceeds donated to the Oral Cancer Foundation.

Jim,
Thanks for sending us this update.
AMERICAN ROAD wants to help out Michelle in her efforts to raise awareness for this horrible disease. We wish Michelle a safe journey and hope that we can set up an on-line chat for everyone to be able to visit with her once she has completed her trek across US 66. In the meantime, we have set up on-line account where people may purchase subscriptions (gift or otherwise) and have a portion of the proceeds donated to the Oral Cancer Foundation ($2.00 for a one-year subscription order or $3.00 from every two-year subscription order). The donation will be made by AMERICAN ROAD as a donation in recognition of Michelle and her efforts. The specially coded links following this post may be used to access these url addresses.
Please continue to keep the AMERICAN ROAD Forum apprised of Michelle's progress Jim.
Best,
Becky Repp

Hi-This is Rock from Amarillo, Texas. Our family vacations were taken in the car headed west from Minnesota. No surprise that I am an avid roadster. I've lived in many parts of the west, and have traveled extensively throughout. A big fan of natural hot springs, I've had some interesting adventures seeking a remote soak. The west has provided many opportunities for off the beaten path travel of all sorts.
I am a graphic designer, and have worked with travel and tourism concerns in small, rural communities throughout the west. Lots of dinosaurs and cowboys in my portfolio. We moved to Amarillo this summer, where there are new opportunities for exploring the local highways and small towns. Hey, I can visit Ol' 66 whenever I want!
Rock
I haven't had a chance to get back to you re: your e-mail. LOT'S going on this past week . . . too long a story.
It was very nice to hear from you. I looked at the map you did, nice work. Please e-mail me when you have some time.
Thanks!

It does not matter to me. I find that my schedule is different each week. Also, I have never used a chat room, and seldom use IM either. Mostly email or telephone are my methods of communication. Those who have a preference should select, and I will drop in sometime when I am free...
Hi Dave,
American Road staff are very excited about the on-line chat. We are planning on having discussions on specific topics and/or discussions with various guests to converse about issues of importance, relevance, or particular interest to American Road's readers. The on-line chat would give individuals a chance to have a real-time discussion with fellow road trip enthusiasts, experts, authors, preservationists, etc.
We are looking forward to hearing from you if there is a guest or topic of particular interest that you would like to propose.
Best,
Becky Repp

According to an article in the Altoona Mirror, the subject of the most recent American Road Diner Days may be in trouble. The article, available here, says that a Rite Aid pharmacy wants to tear down Grubbs Diner in Huntingdon, PA. This is clearly not a done deal and quotes from the county planning director indicate that he's not exactly in favor of the move.
Denny,
It looks like the owner of Grubbs Diner would keep and move the diner elsewhere if the Rite Aid comes in . . . am I reading that correctly?
Do you think letters from American Road & American Road readers might help? If so, let's start writing!
Becky
-
Dave,
I am SO glad you asked this question. We are actually in the process of compiling an index. One of our dedicated subscribers, Richard Etchells, is putting a complete index of American Road articles together. A partial list of everything that he has indexed to date will be posted on our website in the near future. We'll post an announcement with the link once it is up.
Happy travels!

I've just learned that the restored Peter's Creek S-Bridge is to be dedicated on Friday the 17th. Fron the Ohio National Road Association website:
I won't be there (Curse that paycheck addiction!) but maybe some other Buckeyes can attend.
Denny,
If you hear of anyone planning to attend let them know we'd love to get some pictures of the bridge dedication (we'd need info about who's in the picture & who's doing what, etc. . . + info about the bridge/dedication) for possible inclusion in an upcoming issue of AMERICAN ROAD.
Thnx!

Pat,
That is excellent! The Sign Museum does wonderful work. Don't know if you saw the American Road project department in the Autumn issue -- if not, there's an article on the American Sign Museum that talks about some of the challenges they face in their efforts to preserve some of these treasures.

DEVIL’S TOWER TURNS 100
Northeast Wyoming
Devils Tower became the first national monument in the US in 1906
Mateo Tepee is the Native American name for Devils Tower National Monument in northeastern Wyoming. A tribal legend has it that a giant bear scratched his way up the volcanic neck while chasing seven young Kiowa girls to the top - thus forming the gouges that adorn the tower’s side.
President Teddy Roosevelt proclaimed the unique rock and immediate area a national monument in September, 1906. The tower was brought to the world’s attention most prominently as a landing platform for extraterrestrials in Steven Speilberg’s classic sci-fi film “Close Encounters of The Third Kind.”
The spectacular rock formation known as Devils Tower and the surrounding countryside, home to a myriad of plant and animal life, attract visitors from around the world (and, according to Speilberg the Universe!). Visitors delight in the beauty of the area and enjoy the activities offered at the monument. American Indians consider the area sacred, a place for prayer and renewal.

FAMILY FUN & LEARNING IN TEXAS
Learning may not be on a vacation agenda, but most kids can't help but walk away a little smarter after visiting any of the children's museums in Texas. Some of the Texas cities that offer children's museums include Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, Lubbock, Midland, San Angelo, San Antonio, Texarkana, and Tyler. Each uses hands-on exhibits to engage children's interest in a variety of subjects.
The Fort Worth Zoo created an eight-acre Texas Wild! area that highlights the abundant, unique, and varied wildlife of Texas. Kids and adults can reach for the stars at the McDonald Observatory in West Texas. Telescopes at the observatory offer a remarkable view of the stars and planets in our solar system. The site for the telescopes was chosen because of the high ratio of cloudless nights and the distance from artificial lights. Star parties are held on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights and are open to the public.

Hello all. I've heard from Patrick Singleton - another US 99 enthusiast. Patrick is going to draft a template letter that we will obtain input from highway preservationists, enthusiasts, etc. on and then post on the Forum for those interested in expressing an opinion to the task for working on the Interstate/Columbia Bridge project.
Stay tuned for more information!
