  1. You and Jennifer both have awesome aesthetic eyes, Pat. Very nice image, this one. Hey, and you only have to wait a couple more days for the re-opening...heh, heh. Matt Smallwood
  2. Come on, Dave. I want to see you travel coast to coast in the Triumph.....
  3. Ever checked out the videos on Youtube where guys drive on Tail of the Dragon south of Smoky Mtn. NP? Similiar type of highway and it's popular with motorcyclists, too. Matt Smallwood
  4. Yes, a Big Congratulations is in order, Dave. Awesome feat in two weeks. Did it ever get lonely out there? And, yes, Alex, there are a lot of people, including moi, that would like to go out and accomplish a similiar task. Who am I kidding, though....EVERYONE who patronizes this forum would like to do it.....heh, heh. Now, if I had the vacation time.....hmmm. Matt Smallwood
  5. It seems like you just left Florida days ago, Dave. You're moving along quite nicely. And you did it at the time of year that it's not sweltering worm or freezing cold in just about any locale on your Hypotenuse Trail. Outstanding, Dave. Hard to believe you're almost to Seattle. Of course, I only look at this forum every three or four days...seems longer to you, huh.
  6. Looks like a good idea to me, Dave. Anyone with a GPS device gets an idea what the location looks like. You ever Geocache? Seems like it might help in that pursuit. Jennifer Bremer does....remember her Indiana 92 post at the end of last year? She was going to try and find a cache each county in like six months? I need to ask her if she met her goal. And hey, completing your Hypetonuse Trail in 14 days is a heck of a pursuit, too. Best of luck to you.....AND HAVE FUN!!!!! Matt Smallwood
  7. Oh, that's got to be a quiz question, RoadDog....am I right?
  8. I love the ride of my '94 Dodge Intrepid. Very nimble and responsive and a pretty soft ride to boot. Only kind of sorry the mileage is not better than Alex's Cadillac....high 20's on flat highways at 65-70 mph. Guess you can't expect excellent highway mileage at those speeds. Matt Smallwood
  9. 25-27 mpg from a '97 Cadillac? Me thinks that was the small Cadillac......am I correct, Alex?
  10. How can we really BELIEVE that this chasm in Ohio is the perfect pothole. Any got a pic? Chris, Brian....anyone?
  11. I strongly suspect some type of virus activity, Becky. Update the definitions on your PC and do a scan at the very least. No need to apologize....right away I knew that couldn't have been you sending six newsletters in one day. Matt Smallwood
  12. Thanks, Denny......I didn't know it was contained in a book....heh, heh. I'll have to give it a read one day. Matt
  13. Anyone ever read the story about a young Dwight Eisenhower, I believe it was, who led the first road trek across the country in a caravan? I recall he speaks of cars breaking down left and right. And the atrocious road conditions in the 20's. Certainly, in the mountain, plains and desert West, most every roadway must have been unpaved. Probably dirt and gravel in their best conditions....rutted mudholes at their worst. And he had the resources of the post-WW I military at his back. It boggles the mind in this day and age, the military backing this expedition. How awesome would it be if the military footed the bill for one of our road trips? Heh, heh. Ooooooh, what we could do........ Matt Smallwood I was mistaken, Eisenhower made the trip in 1919.....and here's some of the story via the FWHA. http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/interstate/brainia...rinterstate.htm
  14. Hey Chris, I checked out your flickr site last week....lots of cool images, I must say. Any idea what town this was, or was closest to, as you were driving in western Maryland? Has this road been branded "Scenic 40" (I don't know if I like that designation) or MD 144 by the state of Maryland? Is it called something else? I live in Wilmington, DE. Perhaps it's time for a day trip...heh, heh. Matt Smallwood
  15. Another awesome photo, Rick. I've seen your website pics also. They're simple, yet very elegant. I think you have an incredible eye for the aesthetics of any road or object. Keep up the good work. I'm curious, does anyone pay you to take photographs? Someone should be..... Matt Smallwood
  16. I count 30 counties that you've completed, Jennifer. You've mapped out quite a task for yourself. Especially since you might have to uncover objects in snow and ice in an Indiana winter for the next three months..yikes!!! Well, maybe the Midwest will have a mild winter, huh..that'll work to your advantage. Do the northern counties not thaw out until April? You wouldn't considering giving yourself until say September or October, 2008? I can't guess how determined you are, but wouldn't that be more realistic for 62 counties? But then, at least you live centrally in Indianapolis and are never more than 200 or so miles at the beginner of each journey, at my estimation. I wish you and Pat the best of luck !!!! Matt Smallwood
  17. I'm not a coffee drinker, Rebecca. So, I have to make the funniest choice....Liquid Asphalt. Would that be an awesomely thick espresso, with almost a food-like consistency????
  18. The flap over naming a roadway after Addams kinda reminds me of a story I heard years ago. Seems Joe DiMaggio's estate wanted the city of San Francisco to name something after him. The city offered a park, and the estate thought a bridge was more appropriate. I don't know that they budged....anyone know if a park exists with his name? I kind of agree with the city, DiMaggio was a heck of a ball player, but didn't do anything like change our society. Addams, I think she's deserving of a roadway. Matt Smallwood
  19. I personally am fond of US 30 across PA. I know its eastern section is kind of far south for you, Gherkintrude.....it actually goes through the center of Philly on its path to NJ. I wouldn't recommend travelling the section from Chambersburg to Breezewood on a rainy evening either. Those curves are SOOOO much sharper if you barely see the centerline in the pea soup fog that I experienced on one journey eastward....lol. Yeah, and semis that aren't making local deliveries are banned or discouraged from travelling the stretch near Breezewood....yes....... But US 30 does have some points of interest west of Breezewood, and it does veer northward from there. In Bedford and Somerset County, the highway follows high ridges....beautiful overlooks. I personally have checked out the SS Grand View Hotel wreckage on Mount Ararat. What a shame it burned and fell down the side of the mountain in 2001. Here's a link that discusses the hotel..... http://www.preservationpa.org/files/publications/Risk93.htm. And a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article that discusses it's history and the fire that destroyed it..... http://www.postgazette.com/regionstate/200...7ship1027p2.asp. That and there's Fort Ligonier and the Lincoln Highway Association museum. I haven't seen either, though I hope to one day. There's this whole issue with a job that gives me less vacation than I had two years ago... Matt Smallwood
  20. Jen, You take some nice images. I dig how the gloss of the blue paint really stands out on your Corvair, esecially in a dusk photo like this. That paint job is amazing, too. Matt Smallwood
  21. Congrats, Alex!!! I would have probably guessed you on the old Yahoo board, too. Now, about this board, only 10 posts so far. You gotta step it up....heh, heh.
  22. I'm Matt Smallwood. I'm a little younger than some of the members, at 41, but I've learned so much about two lanes on this forum and the National Road forum......especially from Frank and Alex. You guys are wellsprings of knowledge. I live near the eastern end of US 40 and the National Rd., in Wilmington, DE. Have since I was a child. And my parents hail from the western end, in and near the town of Effingham, IL. So, I've driven the I-70 and US 40 corridor probably a hundred times......about half of them with my parents. Dad wasn't a big fan of flying so we NEVER flew to Illinois to visit relatives on vacation. Geez, we even got visit the Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska on one trip. That's probably why I'm a big fan of the road trip and American roads in general. Though no one in my family is. My brother and sister would rather fly to any local over 100 miles away. Not me.....on last count, I've driven through or visited 43 of the 48 continental states.
  23. Isn't there a car museum or display in one casino on the Strip???? Let me do a search. Or does someone know of one on the Strip. Matt Smallwood And we have a winner!!!! Sorry, couldn' t resist that casino-oriented pun. The Imperial Palace Hotel at 3535 Las Vegas Blvd. South has an auto collection. That give you another place to go in Vegas, Jen and Pat? Matt Smallwood
  24. I did okay.....I guessed on 3 and 5. Missed 7 and 9.
  25. Yeah, Historic Landmarks, too. I used to be a member but I don't get much time to explore in IN.....I live south of Philly in Wilmington, DE. I highly suggest visiting the Huddleston Farmhouse in Cambridge City, IN to anyone interested in the western part of the National Road. It's the home of the In. National Road Assn. Got a personalized tour (just me) about three years ago. That's what happen when you vacation in the fall, winter and spring. Matt Smallwood
