I been on route 6 far east as Danbury Ct and west as Wellsboro PA. Some day I will make my first coast to coast trip. I live on LI, NY and have been on a lot of US 20 in NY west of Rochester, into some of it in Mass. I remember being on US 20 when I was 16 in NY and found out that there were routes that used the same number across the country. Since 1970 I have wanted to take each coast to coast route starting with US 20. I understand that roads change hands so state, feds, county, towns, pass off roads to each other for any reasons. Though maintenance responsibilities change there is no need to change the roads original route number. Even when an old alignment is totally bypassed and the new section gets the original route number there ought to be a law that the old road be indicated with the original number followed with the letter H indicating the original route. A boon to tourism and a readily marked detour when a major accident causes the new alignment road to get blocked.

There was a website that listed every US route and there alignments. It made it very easy to retrace the old routes. Thing is I can not remember that website's name. It is similar to the: usends.com.

Glad you got good news. I lost my job back in 2007 and have not been able to get back to where I was financially. Though after 2 years I started a landscape maintenance business and snow. It has grown painfully slow. Though I have been able to hang on. I gave this little bio to say I know what you have been going through. We just have to keep plugging on. Maybe someday I will afford my first coast to coast trip. -
Living blocks from US 20, some people have all the luck. I know that I am repeating myself though that summer in 1970 when we were driving upstate New York to find an antique car. My dad had a endless supply if oil company road maps when they were still full sized and well laid out. I was in charge of mapping out our trip. But I repeat just incase the both of you, knightfan and Denny G have not heard it before. I saw a 1956 US hwy map in my dads stack of maps. There I discovered that there were numbered routes (I knew that there were state and US routes as well as Interstates with numbers at the time) though I was surprised to see that there were numbered roads that went coast to coast still the same route number the whole way. Being we were on US 20 at the moment of my enlightenment I had to do my first coast to coast road trip on US 20. Some day it will happen.

My dad, godfather, and I were towing home my first car. I was 16. We found a 1935 Buick 3 window coupe in a storage building at a Junk Yard a little bit south of Watertown, NY. Side note my dad was in the Army 1935 - 37 and served at Camp Drum, later named Fort Drum. Which is outside Watertown. Anyway, when I saw a railroad bridge, over a railroad bridge that was over a road, I thought it was something special. Special enough to ask my dad to stop the car and let me take a photo. Where is that photo now?

How far are you away from US 20 and why is it your wife's favorite route? I am not so much against going through downtowns or suburban areas. It just may come down to the amount of time. So as a trip takes more time the costs go up.

Anyone see this US 20 website? http://www.historicus20.com/ One day I hope to take US 20 From New York the left coast. Then down the Pacific Coast. I have been on US 20 from Rochester, NY to Pittsfield, Mass, then a bit in Boston. So I will probably will pick up 20 near Eire, PA. I do not know if I can handle modern US 20 before getting past the Great Lakes. I not a fan of hitting every traffic light going through inner cities. Though I did find going through Bethlehem Penn educational. No one can understand how large a business Bethlehem Steel was until you go from the south heading north and seeing all those old Bethlehem buildings, not just the size of each building but the number of huge buildings. Japan never had chance.

Never seen a odd name dealer. And GM now names dealerships by the town they are in. As to mistakes, that is why it is said we grow old to fast and smart too slow.

Favorite Scenic Place To Photograph Vehicles!?

I do not have a favorite place to photograph vehicles. Though I think that any view that would make a good photograph would make a good background. -
I can see closing an unsafe bridge. Though a bridge that old and unique should of been left to stand as a monument to itself. Because it could not function as a road way does not mean it stopped being able to add it's visual enrichment.

I prefer the Impalas from 1960 to 1972. Oh, even though I had a 1967 Impala Convertible, 283, power glide, for me it now has to be a 4 dr hard top.- 1 reply

I do not read or post much here for a while. Though I remember you and your story. My first car was a 1935 Buick 3 window coupe. Bought it in 1970. Sold it in 1995. Still miss that car from time to time but it was time to let it go. You should try to contact you Congressman and Senators office seeking help with your disability claim. After you exhaust that then get a lawyer as Dave said. I lost my good job in 2007 when the economy took a dive. Used up UEI. Many interviews. Still do them though always come up short when they can hire someone young for a lot less money. Age with many jobs industries no longer there has made finding work hard. Which led me to start my own landscape business. Lucky I had all the equipment that I needed to start my business so able to start up with very little money. I am in good health though who knows how long I will last at this being I am 60. Is there something that your health can allow you to start a home based business using computer skills? If so maybe a move to an area that has the need for your skills will help generate business. I have a 2001 GMC Suburban, 5.3, OD, 3.42 rear, 21 hwy. Was to take me coast to coast discovering all the old US routes. So far I have only been on US 20 in parts of MA, NY. Parts US 6 in CT, NY, PA As the Dodger fans use to say: wait till next year. I'll be able to afford going coast to coast. We have to stay positive. Side story I had a 1967 Impala convertible, 283, powerglide. Black, black interior. That car rode nice. Wish I had it now for a road trip as well. Tough call to take the 67 or the 01 suburban.

My mom and dad met working for Wright Aeronautical in Patterson NJ. My dad had a car and gas ration cards. So they commuted from the Bronx to Patterson. My mom said she made pistons or the cylinders for the radial engines. I can not remember which one of those two parts. I think mom said it was for B 24's. My dad said a boss took a liking to him, promoted then taught him how to use a slide rule and he would run the engines on test stands. Break them in and make sure they were ready to go. Part if his job was to record engine data. Such as horse power curves, oil consumption per hour, specific fuel consumption curves. This data then went with each plane. In the old movies when the pilot would ask the navigator do we have enough fuel to make it to reach the coast, my dad's SFC curves would enable the navigator to determine the distance they had left on the fuel in their tanks. That generation including my uncles did not talk much about the Big One. Though I had uncle in the Army Air Corp. He spoke in general. That he was in Africa, France, Italy. He did not say much in detail. Though he held the B 17's in high regard. He said I never saw planes shot up so bad and those B 17's would still make it in. Then he said the B 17's replacement, bad memory again I think it was the B 24. I think he may of called them the Liberators. What I do remember is he said they called them (the B 17's replacement) Flying Coffins. One hit and they would go down. Any way so much for my bad memory and wishing I had asked more questions from my grandparents, aunts and uncles. If you guys ever make it to NY. In Rhinebeck is the Rhinebeck Aerodrome. Air Field and museum where they fly early vintage aircraft and have museums set up in old hangers. About an hour north of NYC on the Hudson river.
