  1. Some of us (Bliss, RoadDog, & me) joined the group crossing the Chain of Rocks and heading to the Route 66 Festival in Springfield, MO, and Roadmaven made it for the street cruise. Great weather for both the drive up the old road and my first street cruise. Some of Friday's fun can be seen at http://www.dennygibson.com/rt66fest07il There will be one more day of posting with Sixty-Six connections then two days of PP-OO.
  2. A very nice report that enforces my desire to get there. I'm guessing you got the idea of posting the trilogy's episode one last from George Lucas. It seems to have worked out well for him.
  3. Yes, the full name takes too long to type so I only use it where that's a chance of confusing him with his evil twin, Keep the SNOW on the Road. That strikes me as extremely strange. Is it possible that it really is an "after the fact" map from 1936 that's trying to show all historical alignments?
  4. Zoomify works quite well. The map is readable and easy to navigate. Does Zoomify somehow greatly reduce the storage so that storage online is feasible or is this a one time experiment to test the technology with storage ultimately planned for CD only? What is the the storage requirement for a map like this?
  5. So that means that we shouldn't always believe KtSotR when he says he's wrong? I'll add my welcome and share my hunch that you'll be able to add plenty to the "good stuff" here. I hope that Anderson, IN, routing makes sense in real life. As I mentioned earlier, MapSource gets pretty confused through there but I suspect it's a software/data issue.
  6. I figured I'd make a Broadwell decision at the last possible moment. If I find myself nearing Springfield with sufficient time, I'll probably pick up the expressway and include it. If not, not. The Cozy Dog will be open after the parade. I know because I encountered last year's Grand Marshall there after the cruising was done Think Cha Cha Muldowney will stop by for a dog this year?
  7. I plan to meet Bliss at 4:45 for the cruise (I believe I'll have an open seat if you're interested & Liz allows;-) but that shouldn't be a problem. The other side is a little different, however. We can reach Broadwell from just about anypoint on the route in an hour and a half or less if we want to jump on the interstate. Of course, every member of this forum could also spend a day and a half (or more) covering the same distance. Getting to the Pig Hip at 2:30 could mean a little clock watching and attraction picking on the way north.
  8. I didn't have to ..."wonder what that is" but I did wonder how you found your way around Cincy without my help. Oh, that's right. Somebody's got a new GPS that must include Ohio maps. I think that's the second time KtSotR has commented on the great pictures from your new camera but I was biting my tongue. I'm glad you 'fessed up before Jennifer busted you. I haven't yet seen the Rose display myself. I think it's there through the end of the year so I should be able to make it. Of course, some of the stuff is there full time and that includes the wall of baseballs where you made a minor goof. I believe there are actually 4256 balls there representing all of Pete's hits and not just the 4192 that was, erroneously it turns out, reported to have broken Cobb's record. Apparently a recount reduced Cobb's hits to 4189 so the hoopla and headlines weren't quite accurate. But 4192 is what was celebrated and what will be remembered. Ooh, ooh, I forgot to mention that, while I didn't wonder what it was, I did wonder where it was when I saw the Zip Dip picture. That's a place I didn't know about and will have to try soon. Glad you came over to find that for me.
  9. Thanks to Ron Warnick's Route 66 News for this link to a Springfield newspaper article on the upcoming festival: http://www.sj-r.com/News/stories/16564.asp The article mentions that a formal dedication of the marker at the Pig Hip site is scheduled for 2:30 Friday. I'm pondering whether to try to cruise north at a pace to include that. It's just over a week away. Anyone else from here joining Bliss, RoadDog, Roadmaven (we think;-), and me at the bridge Friday morning?
  10. Kip, looks like the attachment didn't take. A guess (because I've done the same thing:-) is that you didn't click "Add This Attachment" after browsing to the picture. I've taken the liberty of attaching the copy you sent via email to this reply.
  11. Are the jr. versions useful/usable? As I suspect you are aware, there is currently an eastern US jr. on eBay. Mike is an avid map and music collector who lives in Arizona. My contact with Mike has been through the Route 66 e-group at Yahoo for which he serves as MC and general organizer for the group's breakfast gatherings at national events. I believe that Mike owns one of every oil company map ever printed with duplicates of the common ones. I guess that might be a slight exaggeration but only a slight one. His collection may include auto trails era stuff but I'm not aware that it does. Mike is a member here and may occasionally browse but has not posted since the e-group->forum move. Mike also has the distinction, along with Alex Burr, of having a "letter to the editor" in American Road Volume 1 Number 1.
  12. The federal Highway site does show a Rand McNally PP-OO map they identify as 1927 ( http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/infrastructure/pikes02.htm ). It isn't an "offical" guide, of course, and only shows the high level city-to-city routings. As map collecting has become a bit of a sub-topic here, I'm curious about the wheres & hows of finding auto trail period maps. I occasionally visit eBay and once in a great while do a general web search but you serious collectors must have better sources.
  13. Looks like another good trip. If that is indeed a bridge abutment in the picture, then your buddy must be walking on the old roadway. True? I've encountered a number of car shows in various small towns. I try to walk through at least once and am usually rewarded by finding at least one thing I haven't seen before. I guess at one time I thought it an extraordinary stroke of luck to happen upon a show. But, while it's certainly a stroke of luck, it is, understandably, not all that extraordinary when traveling two-lane roads through small towns during warm season weekends. And I enjoy every one of them. Bummer about the camera. I don't know whether it's the nature of the beast or its handler but it seems I've had a lot more accidental damage to digital gear than I ever had to film gear.
  14. Interesting article on some historically significant roads I know next to nothing about.
  15. I didn't know that. With nothing to support it, I had thought the PP-OO disbanded with the advent of the US Highways. I'm guessing it was just to get those last penciled changes published and that there is a copy hidden somewhere in Anderson, Indiana.
  16. I've started to reply to this post a couple of times but found myself heading towards some long and useless dissertation. I wanted to express my doubts about any sort of wholesale posting particularly regarding tracks. Routes might be useful (and maybe tracks, too, but I'm dubious) and I've even tried being the first. It turns out that file suffixes must be specifically allowed and the ones I've tried (GPX, DMT, ANR) are not on the approved list. I suggest allowing GPX files only. They are really a specialized version of XML so I believe they are safe. DMT, ANR, etc. may also be safe but I'm less sure and I believe we can get by without them. You've suggested that the PP-OO route discussed in another thread might be worth sharing. I've directly shared that with Pat using a DMT file and just this morning posted it at my own website with a link in that thread. If GPX files were allowed, I might have uploaded it here as an attachment. Similarly posting the proposed route of our Cave City, trip might have been useful and posting it for next spring's trip to ??? is a possibility. So, he didn't miss being lost and backtracking to see the sights?
  17. I believe I've plotted something pretty close to the 1926 PP-OO between Springfield, IL, and Greenville, OH. There are some roads missing or sliced through by interstate and there is some true weirdness in Anderson, IN, but I think it's usable. At least I intend to use it The forum doesn't allow uploading GPX files but I've posted my route at http://www.dennygibson.com/temp/maps_etc/ with the title "springfield2greenville.gpx" for any who would like to take a look. This file matches Delorme SA2008 maps. I've also found that I can bring the route into Garmin Map Source and manually tweak it to its maps. (Hopefully, this will give me a route that is completely accurate on the Garmin Quest GPS.) That route is posted as "Gspringfield2greenville.gpx". Visiting Anderson should be interesting. Apparently, the route changed there between 1925 and 1926, the 1925 guide has the town detail's north marking reversed, and there may now be some one way streets or closures involved. I base that last comment on the fact that I can't get what I think is the right path to route with MapSource and its behavior strikes me as avoiding some east-west streets (10th, 11th, 12, 13th) is some directions on some blocks. Curiously, it does route with DeLorme so MapSource could just have bad data. That's something all maps have. I believe that the 1926 PP-OO Guide that KtSotR has shared is the last one published but who knows. The PP-OO secretary may have penciled in a bunch of changes just before they shut down the office.
  18. When I encountered that last night while plotting with SA2008, I just assumed there was no bridge. I'm not very quick with the imagery stuff. The pictures are not nearly as sharp in Google Earth (which I do get to now and then) but no bridge is detectable. I'll let you know in a few weeks unless you or Pat get there first. BTW, spot checks seem to indicate that the PP-OO finale did track with ABB 53 in Illinois as you suggested.
  19. You've got that right. My eyes lit up when I saw the "pagoda" roofed Knupp's Auto in Greenville but I soon realized that the Annie Oakley Park sits there now. But there are lots of other things to look for and I've entered 444W into my cell phone in case I need "quick service" in Anderson, IN. Dave Schul's very good (but not entirely current) website says it ran from Frankfort, OH, to Lafayette, IN. (http://www.marion.ohio-state.edu/fac/schul/trails/state/hub.html). I'll have to look into that. Big thanks!!
  20. KtSotR: From your statement that the PP-OO is 47 on the map, I'm guessing that named auto trails are white on black (reinforced by the fact that 22 looks to be the NOTR). If correct then I'm bursting to know what named auto trail 36 is.
  21. DON'T PANIC Those are all known and valid PP-OO routings (see earlier comment regarding "a highway that couldn't make up its mind"). Much of the PP-OO's earliest route in the east was shared with the NOTR (US-40). The 1924 map seems to still be this way in Indiana although eastern Ohio has already jumped to Steubenville (the jump to Wellsburg is yet to come ). Those are wonderful maps and the photos come through great. I have downloaded all eight. They don't fit my current quest but I believe KtSotR will be addressing that with some stuff from the 1926 PP-OO guide. KtSotR: Until I get the time to pump stuff to it constantly, I have ample room on my server. I'd be happy to loan you a cup of disk space if desired.
  22. From Springfield, IL, east to Greenville, OH. At some point in the (I hope) not too distant future I'll be covering the section east of Greenville to Cadiz so you might want to keep that handy. As things stand, I may have a pretty good handle on things between Springfield & Crawfordsville if the PP-OO's route is the same as the ABB Route 53. As you can see, roadmaven & mobilene did an admirable job of keeping the maps flowing in your absence. I hope the visit was great fun but imagine you're ready to switch from visitee to visitor. Welcome back.
  23. I finally got enough time to do what I believe is exactly the same thing mobilene did the other night. That is plot the directions for Route 53 from the ABB pages he posted on modern roads. There are definitely some expressway slicing going on. Particularly, as mobilene mentioned, west of both Danville and Decatur. Of course, we're not completely sure this is the PP-OO route but, assuming it is, I think I have a fairly good modern-road route for this section. I've already sent Roadmaven an SA2008 compatible version of the file and would be happy to do the same for anyone else who is interested and has SA2008. For others and to see if it's allowed, I tried attaching a GPX version of the route to this message. It isn't (allowed that is) but I'd be happy to send that to anyone interested, as well.
  24. A pretty cool use for some lottery winnings. They look good although I do favor the more authentic (Can a cement tent be authentic?) Frank Redford design. I'd like to see a night time shot of that neon sign.
