  1. I will be staying at the Hyatt Regency across from the Alamo on the River Walk, and I am looking for restaurant and other suggestions for our week in town. My employer of 32 years has an Alumni Club and they plan two trips per year with a corporate subsidy. The Lifetouch Alumni will be meeting March 15-18, but I will be there a few extra days this time and all suggestions are appreciated. I also found out that my son's USAF assignment has changed, and he will be moving to San Antonio for a year of training starting in June, so there will be additional trips to the area in the near future as well. Thanks for all the help I know I will receive from this wonderful group.
  2. Dennis, Great story and write up. And let me know how you like the Moxie. I do not drink any other carbonated beverages due to a medical condition, but I do make the exception for an occaisional Moxie. I always have a few on hand, and several Moxie tin signs scattered in the house. I used to keep running out of Moxie as my son would offer each friend a taste, and then I would find an open container missing one sip sitting on the counter the next morning. The empty nest syndrome does help keep the fridge stocked with Moxie.
  3. I have never been to Woodstock IL, nor have I spent Groundhogs Day in Puxatawney PA, but I have attended a very pleasant small town festival, Puxatawney's Groundhog Festival in the summer. It uses the Town Park with rides, crafts, wonderful foods, and a great small town atmosphere. And the townspeople had a great assortment of teaching pamphlets for teachers in the Chamber of Commerce building that my wife used for years with her 3rd grade students. Definitely worth a look!
  4. That is great news...sounds like things are happening in the western part of our Keytstone Commonwealth. It was about 8 years ago when Peg and I did a section of the LH from Gettysburg heading west as our first 2-lane adventure in our then new marriage. It was a great start for our marriage, and we have been doing more 2-lane trips ever since. Thanks for the posting...
  5. I want to thank everyone on this list for the assistance in my new two lane experiences this year, and for the friendships I have made through this forum in both the yahoo and forum guises in 2006. The contests, information, and camaradarie have been most welcome. I want to wish everyone a SAFE, and HEALTHY 2007 with minimal times on four lane roads and the Interstate system. Happy New Year!
  6. The only few minutes I saw, Vanna did not know if she had ever been on 66, but when she heard it went through Texas, figured that she probably had been on Route 66. It is probably good that she is not on Jeopardy.
  7. Congratulations Alex... I had not checked again until today, but you had beat me to the guess. I was busy scanning old negatives from Pocono Speedway from the 70's, and church camp at Hickory Run State Park, and came over to the forum for a respite. I will learn to check each day. But it is hard to win out over such a road trip expert. Great contest...and great winner.
  8. Alex, What a wonderful idea. I have already passed this on to a few other hobby lists. And have yourself a safe and Merry Christmas.
  9. I will be looking forward to your review early in 2007.
  10. It does not matter to me. I find that my schedule is different each week. Also, I have never used a chat room, and seldom use IM either. Mostly email or telephone are my methods of communication. Those who have a preference should select, and I will drop in sometime when I am free...
  11. A BIG THANK YOU!! to Richard Etchells for all his hard work. This is a great tool. Your hard work is greatly appreciated.
  12. Boy, That was easy. I only wish my other requests in my life were rewarded as swiftly. Looking forward to the release of the index. THANKS.
  13. Is there some place where there is an index of all the issues of American Road? I know as a teen I had indexed all my Car & Drivers, Car Life, and such magazines in a card file so I could find articles from my library faster. If there was an index of the locations mentioned in the past magazines, it might help selling the remaining back issues, and make it easier for us to find what we have in our own piles of the past issues we own.
  14. Dennis, I am looking to pick up a copy of Cars this week too. THat was so much fun. Check out the HO slot car towing rig I made for a recent HO slot car race from a Kellogg's cereal toy...it can tow the car completely around my track.
  15. Just came home from a few days in North Central PA. We were able to have lunch in Coudersport PA on US 6 at Fezz's Diner, a 1954 Silk City Diner. It definitely was a restoration of love, and the diner had originally been in Bethlehem PA, just next door to Allentown. It was a good meal, fun decor, and a great memory refresher. I also stopped at PA-47 and I-80 at a PA chain, Quaker Steak and Lube. Although not a vintage place, it is a lot of fun and Great Food. I know they are also in other states, but they started in Sharon PA. The kids meals come in cardboard NASCAR cars. There are motorcycles, race cars, and even a very nice 60 Corvette on the hydraulic lift in the Bloomsburg restaurant. If you see a Lube coming up as you drive the roads of America, you owe it to your self to stop in for wings or a Lube Burger. And order the antenna of onion rings or get the hot chips with your entree. It is fun...
  16. Not what I would consider historic preservation, but it is better than the fake stone work over many local diners here in the Lehigh Valley...
  17. Thanks Alex for another Hudson Highlight. And by the way, on 10.29.1954, the last 1954 Hudson is produced - many consider this the end of the “real” Hudson, although the marque continued to be produced until 1957 as a badge-engineered Nash
  18. Great news, and great images on the pdf as well. Thanks for sharing. Maybe when my son gets stationed in Enid OK I will do some exploring of 66 in that area. Thanks again.
  19. I know what you mean Denny. I find most of my vacations end up being a combination of both. When driving, I take the Interstate for the first 30 minutes or so from home before branching off as I have covered the local two lanes more often, the look for the routes I really prefer to drive. When flying somewhere, I often take the Interstate to the first location to get acclimated to the area, and then start the exploration trips. But I know our relatives in New Hampshire could not understand why it took so long to drive from Allentown PA to Bennington VT to visit. I don't think they will ever get it either...

Is it as interesting as it looks like it should be? (bad sentence construction I know)
  21. This photo has a great Vintage Postcard look to it. Thanks.
  22. I don't remember Harvey House in my travels. What was their geographic area? What was the era that they were in their prime? Thanks for educating a fellow traveler...
  23. I have posted photos from our recent trip to New Mexico in the Reese's Pieces album in the sited gallery. Comments will be appreciated.
  24. From the album: Reese's Photo Pieces

Many quaint shops are in courtyards and streets in Old Town.
