This is a photo of an [historic] Oklahoma state Route 66 shield that I found in

the "signpost forest" located in Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, Canada during my

recent "roadtrip" thru Canada and Alaska.

The story is that in 1946--the year the original Alcan hwy was finished--a

soldier was recuperating from his injuries and was lonely. He decided to put up

a sign telling the miles to his home in the south 48. I caught on and has grown

to approximately 20,000 signs; growing by about 2,000 each year.

I'm sending this to you all in hopes that it will be of interest to the

"roadies" and someone with greater skills than I can post it for all to enjoy.

Sorry about the old "Okie" in the photo....

I can tell you that NW Wisconsin (North of Eau Claire) is REALLY pretty in

the fall....my inlaws live in Spooner, WI about 50 miles South of Duluth (US

53 and 63 are the main arteries through there) and that gets really pretty

up there...if you get up in that neck of the woods and come across a "Mac

Lake Tavern", my sister in law Kelly runs the place; stop in and tell her I

said hello..Tsingtao, Kip

This is a request for any interested preservationists to log onto

www.monticelloenews.com

and cast your vote to "rehab and repurpose" the Old Piatt County Jail. (lower

left hand

corner of the web page) It will only take a moment and I thank you for your

support.

The jail is located in Monticello Illinois, 1 block east of the late twenties

alignment of the

Pikes Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway, one of the early transcontinental named

highways. By

that time, the PPOO had been realigned from New York to Los Angeles.

The Old Piatt County Jail was built just after the Civil War (around 1867) It

was in operation

continuously until earlier this summer when a new jail was completed. Before it

was retired, the jail

was purportedly the 2nd oldest operating jail in the state of Illinois. The

County Board now wants

it demolished.

Any preservation votes are GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

Thanks, Pat, for the link to the article and photo about the Drake. Maybe it

wasn't the coolest looking old motel, but the sheer glee expressed by officials

at its destruction would make you think they had just rid the world of an

infectious plague. The developer of the new retail center was described as a

visionary, while the word "blight" was used at least four times in connection

with the motel. This article speaks volumes about the greed and shortsightedness

of urban developers and tax hogs. Visionary? Hardly. A visionary would find

creative uses for historic buildings such as the Drake and the other motels they

bragged about razing. Unfortunately, now that the Supreme Court has taken a

large-tip Sharpie and marked out the part of the Constitution they didn't like,

people like these will soon set their sights on other so-called blighted areas,

like "eyesore" housing developments and business districts that in their minds

are no longer generating enough revenue.

Thanks for taking a look at my website's new addition. My hope is to

be able to chronicle all of the through-routes that would have carried

motorists to and from Chicago.

I started with the route 66 corridor, and knew that one named trail

that predated 66 as the marked route from Chicago to St. Louis was

known as the Pontiac Trail. I also knew that the Pontiac Trail was

partially sponsored by the B.F. Goodrich company. Surprisingly, I

found very little info about the Pontiac Trail, but a lot of

information about the main roads actually used by the early motorists,

regardless of how they may have been marked.

So far, the web page has a little about what I DO know so far

concerning the Pontiac Trail, including a complete transcript of a

descriptive article from the August 1915 Illinois Highways magazine. I

also have information from my research into some guide books from the

year 1914, including a valuable insight as to why all of the early

highways were oriented from Jackson Boulevard and Michigan Avenue in

Chicago (referred to as the"Route Center," in the 1914 Automobile Blue

Book). I have postcard images of what that intersection looked like in

that era, as well as some images of Garfield Park, which the motorists

would have passed through on their way in or out of the city.

Future updates for which I already have some research completed will

include routing information from touring guides of 1915, 1917, 1920,

and 1923.

So, if you have not already done so, please check out this "work in

progress," and give me your comments.

In Memphis, 64, 70 and 79 co-sign coming in from the east on Summer. 70 and 79,

and probably 64 cross 72 in the south western part of the city on Poplar. In

downtown everything crosses 61 and 51 - 61, 70, and 79 are co-signed across the

I-55 bridge into West Memphis, probably 64 also, while 51 goes it's lonely way

north and south..

78 also runs into downtown Memphis on Lamar; 72 comes in on Poplar and winds

up with everything else in downtown Memphis.

Mo 100 is also the original alignment of US 66 AND US 50 ;)

A couple of months ago, I had the opportunity and inclination to

do some hiking in the Smokies. I decided to make a road trip out of

it as well and got good pictures of some roadside goodies. Once

again, these photos can be found at

http://community.webshots.com/user/babyboomerbob

I started out heading east out of Knoxiousville on I-40, until I

reached the Sevierville exit. I headed south toward the Great Smoky

Mountains National Park, keeping my eyes peeled for photo ops. My

first stop was at the Route 66 Roadhouse <Rte. 66 Roadhouse>, now

sadly defunct. You may think it a bit odd so find a place with such a

name in Tennessee, but its name is quite appropriate, since it's on TN

SR 66:)

At Sevierville I continued south on US 441 which was already

becoming a traffic nightmare. It was peak season for fall foliage

tourists, so progress was slow. I turned off the main drag to get a

photo of the courthouse <Sevier County Courthouse>, then shot a neat

looking restaurant <Cobbler's Restaurant>. Notice how empty the

street were. And this just a block from the conjestion of 441. I'll

have to stop in some time.

I didn't bother to take any pictures in Pigeon Forge. That's the

kind of place I just want to get on through. I do have a story about

it, however. One dark, rainy morning Susan and I were driving through

Pigeon Forge when we noticed traffic getting slower than usual. I

could see a police car with its flashers on and figured there'd been a

wreck. There was a trooper in the right lane, motioning us to turn

right. Okay, I thought, detour time. It wasn't until we saw the line

of cars turning into a cemetary that we realized we were in a funeral

procession. Perhaps the fact the trooper was holding his hat over his

heart should have clued us in:)

Technically speaking, US 441 ends at the park boundary and

resumes at the Qalla Cherokee Reservation. Through the park it's

Newfound Gap Road. I headed up toward the gap getting a couple of

pictures on the way. The Chimney Tops <Chimney Tops> is a popular

hiking spot and the side of the road was already cluttered with cars

that couldn't find a parking place in the lot and just pulled over on

the shoulder. One of Susan's sisters once hiked the Chimneys with

some friends in the middle of winter with ice all over place, carrying

a cooler of beer:) Not a smart move, IMHO:)

Newfound Gap Road is one of only two roads I know of that has a

"pigtail". The road does a complete circle and crosses itself as it

climbs the mountains. <"Pigtail" Sign> The only other road I've seen

like that is the Iron Mountain Highway (US 16A) in the Black Hills of

South Dakota. Anyone know of any others? Enlightenment is always

welcome.

When I got to Newfound Gap I headed west on the Clingman's Dome

Road to its end at a big parking lot <View from Clingman's Dome

parking lot>. There are several trailheads here, the most popular one

a paved trail (wheelchair accessable) to the top of Clingman's Dome,

the highest point in the park. And the highest point in Tennessee as

well.

It was so nice getting away from all the traffic and being out in

the woods all by myself. Well, pretty much by myself:) There were a

few other hiking parties, but not enough to spoil the serenity. The

foliage wasn't much to speak of (a bad year, all around:() So I've

only posted a few self explanitory pictures. Andrews Bald is known

for it's magnificent June display of flame azaleas, so I've also

included some pictures from a 1988 hike at the peak bloom time.

After the hike, I decided to head down to Cherokee and take more

pictures. There was one certain motel I wanted to find. So I headed

south down Newfound Gap Road. When I got to Oconaluftee Visitor's

Center, I saw a new road sign. "Caution. Elk Crossing". I smiled

knowing the program to reintroduce elk into the park was going well.

I wish I could have gotten a picture but the traffic was horrible and

there was no place to pull over:(

US 441 resumes at the entrance to the Cherokee Indian

Reservation. A new sign is being raised, using both English and the

Cherokee language <Welcome..., Seal...>.

By the time I reached Cherokee I was famished. It was 2:30 and I

was ready to eat the roadway when I pulled in to the locan Shoney's.

After lunch I looked across the highway and realized I'd reached my

destination...the Pink Motel.

Let's just say it's a real eye catcher. And the neon sign is groovy:)

Actually, there's a lot of neon left in Cherokee. I took several

pictures of signs, all too many showing what I guess are supposed to

be Cherokee Indians...wearing Sioux war bonnets:( Ah, stereotypes...:(

One other thing I wish I had photographed was one of the street

signs. Many of them are also bilingual. The Cherokee alphabet that

Sequoya created is quite beautiful.

By this time it was late in the afternoon, so I headed to I-40

the quickest way I could and went home.

Happy motoring,

It occurs to me that US 23/33/40 come together in Columbus,

OH. And I know they're no longer signed through Indy (only

around the city on I-465 now), but 521/31/40 met there as

Broad, Southeastern and Meridian Sts. I think I'm correct

on those street names in Indy.

Anyone know if MO 94, which runs along the Missouri River,

used to be signed as a US highway?

To my knowledge, no. I checked as far back as 1956 and found no US

designations.

maps ever showing any part of MO-94 as having been a US highway.

Here's another trivia question: What is the highest consecutive numbered US

highway duplex? An example would be US 70 and US 71.

How about US 59/70/71/371 in De Queen, AR? You could also throw in US 70B

and have 5 US routes.

US 65/82/278 in southeast AR

US 64/67/167 along Future I-30 from Beebe to Bald Knob, AR

There's also the I-30/US 65/67/70/167 in Little Rock, and I-55/US 61/63/64

in West Memphis. East of West Memphis, there is I-55/US 61/64/70/79.

AFAIK, all these are mostly secret, as the US routes are only signed on

overheads. There is I-530/US 63/65/79 in Pine Bluff, which is fully signed

at one point. There is an interchange that is I-530/US 63/65/65B/79/425.

New trivia question:

What is the shortest distance that any US highway spends in one state?

US 340 crosses the Potomac River from Maryland into Virginia. Less than a

half mile later, it goes into West Virginia.

The other candidate might be US 60 in Illinois, between the Ohio and

Mississippi Rivers.
