Hi Shellee,

You may have already considered this idea, but what

about including the statehood day for all eight

states? Arizona would be one of those "teen" dates

that you're looking for, landing on Valentine Day.

(Kinda symbolic considering Valentine is a town along

66 in Arizona).

God Bless and Happy Trails.

Hi Shellee,

I've heard many Route 66 historians tell me that they're not 'car guys,' and

that 'car guys' aren't interested in Route 66, but without a road, why a car?

and without a car, why a road? So here are some car related dates. I don't

know how many listers know that Route 66 and Pontiac share the same birthday

year. They are both turning 80 in 2006. The other car dates are for cars that

would be my car of choice for a cool Route 66 cruise.

January 9, 1926 - Pontiac Introduced at New York Auto Show

July 14, 1953 - Corvette Introduced

September 9, 1954 - First Production Thunderbird Completed

April 17, 1964 - Ford Mustang Introduced

January 27, 1965 - Shelby-Mustang Introduced

Many thanks. Maybe now I can get my wife on the ferry from Milwaukee

(a land wherein I was born and raised) to Ludington, MI.

You want to surf over to http://www.michigan.org for that. I bet they

If I'm not mistaken, there's a ferry to the Apostle Island National

Copper Harbor, MI for a fact)

I'm guessing $55 for the car and $80 a head because that's what it

costs from Milwaukee. For exact costs, go to

Go to the National Railroad Museum while you're there, too. There are

a couple B&B's to check out, but not that close to Lambeau Field.

Shenanigan's, which is owned by Max McGee. For you who aren't diehard

Door County has some of the best camping anywhere. It's the part

between Green Bay (the body of water) and Lake Michigan. Bring money

for a fish boil. http://www.doorcountyvacations.com

A weekend outing along two of Ohio's Scenic Byways has just been posted at:

http://www.dennygibson.com/oh66plus

Since I started an "opt-in" mailing list for this sort of message, I have

dropped bulk mailings to folks that I only "guessed" would be interested.

But, I've decided that this group might be an exception since new members

just keep showing up. Labor Day is almost here so there might not be any

more multi-day trips before spring but there could be. There will certainly

be some next summer and if you would like to know when daily updates happen,

just sign on to the "On The Road" list at:

http://www.dennygibson.com/listmailer/?p=subscribe&id=1

And you can always see the whole compliment of old stuff starting at:

I would say that the bridge has been "functionally obsolete" for 30

years...I would also say that there is at least a 50% chance that it was the

bridge...Tsingtao, Kip

They moved the McDonalds from Henderson across the bridge to Point

Pleasant...they put a new bridge in right their and the McDonalds was in the way

so it had to be torn down and rebuilt.

Nice to meet you...

Jan

Hey thanks Jandara!

I always wondered what happened at that site! When the Mothman Prophecies

came out, The cities named turned a light on upstairs (so to say) & this bridge

site came to mind. It had me wondering if this was indeed the site.

I always had a strange feeling about this bridge site when ever I looked at it

as I had passed by.

I never could figure out why, Until now!

Thanks for your enlightenment about this!

When I was in a hurry, I use to stop by the McDonalds at Henderson Wv. on 35

to get something to eat for on the go!

Boy!............What a small world this is!

At the roadside rest in Gallipolis Ohio they have a piece on display which is

the same piece that broke causing the bridge to fall... it was a huge metal bolt

type thing... can't remember what it was called though.... theirs a plaque

telling about it and what they believe happened to cause it to fall.

Jan

As I recall, the real problem with the Silver Bridge was the steel, not the

design.

The 2005 version of the San Bernardino Rendezvous happens in a few days and

this year it forms the backgrpound for the Route 66 Federation gathering and

Steinbeck awards. I am now officially on my way via parts of Route 66 and

some Arizona attractions. The first day consisted of flying to Phoenix then

driving to Jerome, AZ. It has been posted at

www.dennygibson.com/rt66fest05

and the rest of the trip will follow.

Some historic (i.e., rustic) accommodations are being used so internet

access will be spotty.

I was going to hold off on this until I had more material, but it's

ready now.

I've started a Weblog that aims to be a clearinghouse of news related

to Route 66, called Route 66 News. The URL is www.route66news.org.

You can surf over there now and read new items, including an article

about the 10th anniversary of the California Route 66 Association and

a terrific post from The Fat Man Walking site.

I plan to post new material there daily. But this is not only my Web

site, but yours. If any of you out there on the e-group have something

going on, like an event coming up, a neat experience or important news

about a business or attraction on the road, contact me. News tips also

are appreciated.

You also can comment on the stories posted on the site. I'm moderating

each comment to filter out spam, but I promise I'll try to deal with

your comments or questions promptly.

Also, if you have a link that's not already on the big links list, let

me know. If it pertains to 66, I'll put it on.

More will be coming this week on the El Vado situation, as soon as I

track down more information.

Thanks for your help in advance.

All,

Thanks for the valuable input.

I decided to take the Kancamagus Scenic route. It is a visually

stunning 34mile drive through the valley. I did a complete loop till

Conway and came back through the valley. While going to White

mountains, I had a stopover at Woburn, MA. From Woburn, I took Rte

95N to 93N.

The only issue was some rain and lot of fog. I missed out on some of

the fall visuals from the scenic overlooks because the fog covered

the mountains. Overall it was a great experience.

I will try and post some of the pics in the photos section soon.

Kevin,

I really enjoyed the pics of Maysville. My wife's brother lives near

Maysville, so we sometimes go up there to visit. I like the area, and

especially like to camp just across the river in Ohio, straight across from

that wall.

We usually go there for the 4th of July, when they have the fireworks on the

river. We like to go out on his pontoon boat, and watch the fireworks from

the river. The river gets really crowded at that time, don't it?...LOL. Thanks

for the pics, and you have a good day.

Hi folks: Since the price of gas blew my budget, and my car really

can't make long trips due to problems, I've been walking around

Maysville, and Mason Co., Ky. in search of 'roadie' things. I hit on

ghost signs (Wall dogs) and got a nice collection of ones in

Maysville, and Augusta, Ky.

I've posted my first set, of Maysville's wall dogs on the local BBS

gallery. I've enhanced all of them to bring out details.

Since I just uploaded them, they may be moved around, so go here:

http://www.maysvillekybbs.com/gallery/search.php?c=8 and type in

'ghostsigns' or 'walldogs' to dig them up.

If you still have problems, e-mail me, or drop me a note here and I'll

see if I can help.

I'm going to be writing up an article on general wall-dogs to go with

these photos. I'll post it here, when It's written.

Kevin, great idea. Not only shows us signs we may

never see, but also some nice buildings in a nice town

some of us may not get to visit. again, great

idea--and they came up very easy even for this

beginner. John w, ipilot66@yahoo.com

Hey Ron:

Congrats on a great looking site.

Looks like it is going to be a great resource for folks who want to

know what is going on on Route 66 these days, as well as a nice forum.

Updated daily? I think the last time I saw my website was in July.

I'll add a link to you once I get in there and start messing under

the hood.

Hello: I would like to submit an article for publication in your magazine.

It is an article on the Arch on the Missouri Arkansas border on Highway 61

(there's a pic of it in Tim Steil's book on highway 61). I have a few pics

to add, historical and otherwise. Let me know where to send it and what you

need. Thanks, Kip Welborn

As promised earlier this year, the Drake Motel on US 40 in Indianapolis

came down this week, much to the joy of the Mayor of Indianapolis:

http://www.indygov.org/pr/20051109a.htm

The tone of the press release portrays what the Drake has been

recently, and not what it once was 40 & 50 years ago. And with its

demise and the addition of another retail strip plaza to the landscape,

this country just got a little more generic.
