1. I always check the price of real estate, have for 30 years, no matter where

we went. I always picked up a real estate guide and even called a few phone

numbers. You (not me) could have bought a brick house ON THE BEACH in Destin

for $70,000. At that time, our $22,500 house notes were killing us ($220). The

same spots where the $70,000 houses were then are million dollar hotels now.

2. To have some time with the kids, we took my oldest son, his wife, and their

two baby boys on a Labor Day trip (5 years ago this coming up labor day). We

took our 31 foot camper and stayed ON THE BEACH, first row, looking at the water

in the only on the water campground in Destin/Sandestin. Wonderful! It's still

there. My little dil said, "I could live here." My son said, "Really?" They

came home, put up a for-sale sign, sold their house, packed up and were gone in

no time and are still there. Now, the grandchildren live in Destin and there's

one more boy. Be careful folks, when you give them wings, they fly.

3. My son and dil had a couple of friends come over like this past winter

holiday for the weekend to see them in Destin. They were all standing in line

at a good restaurant. (You always stand in line at a good restaurant in Destin.)

The guy friend and whoever was standing behind him struck up a conversation.

Where you from? What do you do? Oh, really? I need a manager for my

construction company. You manage your father's construction company? Three

conversations later, friend was hired. They came home to Baton Rouge, put up a

sign, the husband left immediately for the new job in Destin and bought them a

house over there. Wife sold house here and packed up and moved. They were

moved into their new house a few blocks away from my son in 2 months. Woe!

Only complaint? The house they left in Baton Rouge for the same money is 10

times? or more the house they have in Destin. She already had an

appropriate-for-the-beach cosmetic surgery over there, so the money must be

worth

it, big time. By the way, the same surgery here costs a lot less. My son

says the projection is for 12 more years of growth/boom in that area. They are

building a new bridge from Sandestin to Freeport, so that will make three

bridges crossing over.

4. My favorite places to eat in Destin?

#1 McGuires Irish Pub: always a line, everybody else copies THEIR potato

skins, and THEIR brownie fudge sundae, they have an 18 cent Senate bean soup

that you have to always get, of course homemade rye bread, great traditional

Irish fare especially the Shepard's Pie and the lamb chops. Not everybody has

lamb, you know. It is also a microbrewery and everybody is always singing

there. The atmosphere is great. They also have like $100,000 worth of dollar

bills hanging from the ceiling. You can ask for a sample of a type of beer

before you buy it (just in case you don't know.)

#2 The Pancakery: always a line, Dean Martin-Frank Sinatra music, stuffed

chickens and moose that talks and moves on the walls, coffee pot really brewing

right on your table, fresh squeezed orange juice, apple smoked bacon, every kind

of pancake and crepe you ever heard of: wonderful. Oh, bakery inside with

EVERYTHING. Oh, did I tell you they make their own Italian beef sausage.

Wonderful.

#3 The Broken Egg: always a line, like eggs 50 ways, we get the crab/shrimp

omelet, apple smoked bacon, fresh squeezed orange juice, homemade everything,

wonderful. They have every type of Eggs Benedict, but different that you never

heard of.

5. Did you know you can get your scuba certificate in one weekend for $99 from

some Fort Walton outfit?

6. Did you know you can scallop (with snorkel and hand net) right at Mexico

beach and see all kinds of fish and underwater creatures? Warning: the tide

goes out and your are stranded. They say that there are like 40 boats per night

stranded out on the glass flats till the morning tide comes in and it is deep

enough to get their boats back in.

Jim,

I'm really embarassed now. Right before I left, I remembered reading a good

summary of that "game" in the not so distant past but couldn't remember

where. I should have thought of AR right off. I'll brush up (and blush

down:) when I get home.

I had not intended to make any daily progress announcements here (I'm trying

to use a mailing list for that) but... since I just now finished yesterday's

stuff and... since you've unintentionally given me an opening and... since I

still have a little Yuengling to finish here on the patio of the Quaker

Steak & Lube in Sharon, PA, I'll go ahead and mention that the first day

actually from sixty-two (there's only gonna be 2 more, this time) is ready

at http://www.dennygibson.com/rt62east/day02/index.htm

Denny,

It looks like you're showing more interest in US62 than highway officials

did back in 1925-26 when Kentucky governor William Fields did everything he

could to kick that road out of his state. You may recall "Numbers Game" in

Vol. 2, No. 1 of American Road.

I look forward to your trip reports.

Don't forget the time I was coming home from Paris via Memphis and caught a

flight with Uncle Barry - neither of us knew it of course. When Uncle Barry was

coming down the ramp he saw a huge crowd of relatives there to greet him home

from his business trip, what a nice surprise!!! But the truth was that they

were really there to greet me coming back from my summer in Europe. We all went

out to eat together to celebrate, of course!!!

Thats great. I dont travel as much as you do.. but you tell wonderful stories

and I like to hear them. Dentin Texas? Was that right? We are in Oklahoma

City... dont know how far that is from Dentin but I bet it isnt far.

Love road trips.. but with gas prices where they are we arnt doing much

traveling either. My mother and father live in Florida (old people lol j/k) and

they have a camper and for the summer they took our 13 year old up to see

relatives in Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan. He was pretty excited about the

road trip "in style" as he calls it with Nana and Grandpa's trailer in tow..

Talk to you soon

Got a postcard in the mail the other day from a local church

offering a vacation Bible school with the title "Ramblin' Road Trip".

I thought the card was cute (note the Bible verse in the shield:), so

I scanned it and, since it was a single image, put it in the photo

section of the newsgroup under the BabyBoomerBob folder.

BTW, is anyone having problems getting their posts to get

through? I finished my Dixie Highway writeup sunday and sent it in.

Two days later, it hasn't shown up. It's likely floating somewhere

out there in the Twilight Zone:) It's about 14K, whick I didn't think

was too long but I may be wrong. I might split it up and try again.

Happy Motoring,

I watched AmericanRoads1 last night and just now finished AmericanRoads2 and

greatly enjoyed them both. The whole Yellowstone Trail is unknown territory

for me. The insets of sign photos identifying the roads is a nice touch.

Is it possible that this is the only place that the famous Bremer Route 66

Sofa can be viewed online? Quite a coup there, Toshio.

It's not only pretty good, it's the oldest Sixty-Six site on the 'net and

offers some of the best directions around. Group member Swa Frantzen

maintains the site and verifies those directions personally whenever he can.

Not a relative, but in 1959, on my way home from my

last Navy duty station I stopped in Memphis to see my

then 1? year old daughter.

After my visit I took the bus out to Memphis airport

for a flight to Boston. There was an older woman

sitting beside me and we got to talking. When I

mentioned I was from Kennebunk, ME, she exclaimed that

she and her family had had a summer place in

Kennebunkport in the 1920's and 1930's and did I know

the wonderful gentleman who had done their yard

maintenance - a Mr. Burr. Mr. Burr was my grandfather,

I told her, much to her amazement. It's nice when

complete strangers express such great feelings for

your relatives.

Happy traveling.

Guest Toshio Koshimizu

Pat,

Thank you again for your kind hospitality in Indianapolis

when we visited.

In my last mail here, by mistake I didn't mention about

our trip on IL Route 66 and we could meet many nice people

gathering at White Fence Farm for IL Route 66 Motor Tour.

As Jennifer noticed in advance our visit to the promoters

of the Tour, they could recognize us soon after our arrival

and welcomed us very, very warmly. On Route 66, we could

easily find many interesting points by the maps and photos

Jennifer gave us.

Thanks again and say hello to Jennifer.

Regards,

Toshio

Toshio,

Greetings! I've really enjoyed viewing your slide show from your

trip. It must've been difficult to go through the hundreds of

pictures you took to decide which ones to put up on your web site. It

was a pleasure taking you on a brief tour of Indianapolis & hope we

can do it again.

Wish I could say the teepees No. of PB were still there; alas they have been

gone many years...there is a cool motel on 66 (which may have burned) called

Roessner's in the Bonne Terre/Flat River (Park Hills) area...I always

thought it was cool because it was right on the highway...there is also a

cool park down near Farmington called St. Joe State Park; there is a really

nice swimming lake in the park; the beach is made out of the limestone they

pulled out of the lead mines...Tsingtao, Kip

Hi Denny,

I should have used the word AWESOME! Ha Ha Ha! I have been to a few route 66

sites & this one by far exceeds them all!

No offence to the other sites, But this site even has a chat room that started

just a few months ago.

I noticed also that Alan Jackson may be making a song for this historic route!

Check out his brief "Guest Book" note,

I believe that it was dated Jan. 16th 2005 or somewhere around that date! The

comments & stories from people from all over the world are very fun to read!

Mr Frantzen deserves alot of credit for maintaining such an "AWESOME" site!

It's not only pretty good, it's the oldest Sixty-Six site on the 'net and

offers some of the best directions around. Group member Swa Frantzen

maintains the site and verifies those directions personally whenever he can.

Yes, Denny - it is a coup! I granted Toshio exclusive rights to the

images of our Route 66 family room - I didn't even put any photos of

it up on *our* website!! LOL

I have made at least two posts in the past week or so to the group

Ya know, Denny, I'm surprised too we don't have any pics of our Route

66 Family Room on our web site. Not thumping my chest, but we've got

some pretty cool stuff, that, now that I think of it, only 4 other

roadies have ever seen: Toshio & Hiroko, and Randy & Melody May. I

think that'll be fixin' to change! I'll post a note once it gets done.

However, if you look really close in Toshio's picture of our futon, you

can barely see on the bookshelf T. Repp's "Empires of the Amusement"

standing proudly above the rest...just to keep it on topic. :-)

Also Denny, we're heading down to French Lick, Indiana Saturday to tour

the West Baden Springs Hotel with our Corvair club. Ever been there &

would you want to ride shot gun??

Hmmmmm. That upholstry design looks familiar. There's a restaurant

(forgot the name:() in Kadoka South Dakota with booths upholstered

with that same design. It's on the main drag, which is a

decomissioned stretch of US 16.

It's currently open for tours, but not "business". However, a casinon

is coming to French Lick, so the locals are hoping it'll inspire

someone to purchase the hotel (for $30 mil) and re-open it.

The Badger travels between Manitowoc, WI and

Ludington, MI. There is a second new ferry that runs

between Milwaukee and Muskegon, MI. There may be more

in the future from what I understand!

If you have time you should certainly go up to

Bayfield- but that is about a 3 or 4 hour drive from

the Manitowoc Area. They have many cruises and a ferry

that runs across to Madeline Island.

There is a ferry from the top of Door County to

Washington Island. That is pretty darn fun!

Of course Wausau is just a couple of hours away!
