Utah has only two interstate highways, I-15 and I-70. We are lucky

We were “lost” in the same area about three years ago in an extended

camping trip. I got on Highway 12 and thought I was never going to find

I-84 Utah - splits off I-15 north of Ogden up by, uh, Elwood, Garland. Runs

north into Idaho to I-86 up around Rupert then west to Portland, as I recall.

It was repeated in Cincy tonight and I only missed the first 15 minutes (I

missed the first half of the original broadcast). So this time I got to see

Wigwam Village #2 (with Brian, Sarah, & kids) and the World's Largest Catsup

Bottle (with The Big Tomato). An interesting & fun show and next time I'm

gonna see it all.

Hi all!

Pat and I are leaving for Atlanta and will be gone for a week.

We know that the current system of member approval and short

moderation of new members works well, since we have been spam free

for some time now! But it requires our attention, and we will be

away for a week without Internet access.

So, during that time we have changed the status of the list to

automatic member joining, and any new members who join this week will

not be moderated.

I hope not, but there could be spam this week. We will deal with any

offenders when we return. If we can find access before, we will try

our best to address it sooner.

Time to hit the road,

Thanks Matt,

I'll have to look perhaps the US 11 may be a good idea, however, as

much as I love the Skyline, hauling a long trailer around those curves

and especially the downside of the mountains, is white knuckle time for

hubby. We are newbies with the trailer, and need to err on the side

of caution right now. Nothing good north of Harrisburg? There are

some mildly hair raising points on I-81 south of Binghamton in PA.

I'll have to get the exact routes, but we have found a couple of lovely

ways around the Princeton NJ/Eastern PA area. Meandering up to 287

North. When I find them, I'll put them up for anyone interested.

Other beautiful drives include along the Hudson River on the East side,

old farms, horse farms, etc. And of interest, but not so lovely are

the "mental institutions" that have been closed for a long time.

Abandoned, they conjure up all sorts of thoughts, and imaginings. I

do remember my mother saying if we didn't behave we would "drive her to

Poughkeepsie".

Hi Darlene,

Oh girl, I love your understatement about the

"beautiful drives include along the Hudson River on

the East side, old farms, horse farms, etc". LOL

Those "old farms" are estates of the rich and famous

- There is a rich history wrapped around the men and

women who settled along the Hudson River. Statesmen

and politicians called the Valley home, including

Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose estate at Hyde Park was

both his refuge and his final resting place. Several

estates in the Mid-Hudson region are connected with

various branches of the Livingston family, whose

members included war heroes, political figures, and

one of the five authors of the Declaration of

Independence (who, incidentally, swore in George

Washington as the first president of the United

States). The Mills and Vanderbilt families were at the

center of New York society life at the turn of the

last century, their estates redolent with the opulence

of the American Renaissance. The Hudson Valley's lush

landscapes drew artists to its beauty, inspiring the

Hudson River School of Painting. Some of the finest

known examples of this artistic movement are on

display in Olana, home of Frederick Church. Check this

web site: http://www.hudsonriver.com/estates.htm

Route 9 from New York north to Castleton-on-Hudson

is rich in history going back to the Revolutionary

War. Here also, about 10 miles north of Hyde Park, you

will find the Old Rhinebeck Airdrome - check out their

web site:

http://www.oldrhinebeck.org/default.htm

Watch a re-enactment of an WWI dog fight, take a

ride in a 1929 Standard Bi-plane.

While not strickly on this ride, West Point, home of

the U S Military Academy, on the west side off 9W is

realtively easy to get to - coming north take 202/6

out of Peekskill along the western edge of the New

York State Military Reservation and cross the bridge

to 9W. I think that's the Bear Mountain Bridge. Go

north on 9W for a little over 5 miles to West Point.

It's easy to go either north to I-90 and back to U S 9

- or just turn around and go back across the Bear

Mountain Bridge.

Wherever you go in this region, do NOT expect to

make it a day trip. There is so much history and so

many things to see here - Oh, I almost forgot

Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. If you linger overnight,

beware, you may see the headless horseman!!!!!!

What a great response!

Yes, it was a bit of an understatement I suppose. In light of time

constraints. Olana has been on our "list of things to do" for a long

time. Frederic Church is one of my favorite Hudson River artists.

Being new at this, I am not sure about what roads qualify as

interesting - any off the beaten path, or just cross country roads

like Rt 20 and Rt 66 etc.

We live in the midst of a ton of history here also: Saratoga

Battlefield and Monument, Schuylerville (original Saratoga), Saratoga

Flat Track, Lake Champlain - birthplace of the US Navy,

Fort Ticonderoga (Last of the Mohicans), Cooperstown, Grant's Cottage,

Adirondack Great Camps and many more.

Guest Stephanie Hedgepath

I will be in the Canton, Ohio starting tomorrow. Are there any scenic

areas within easy driving distance that anyone knows about? Any really good

antique shops (I'm mostly into traditional/country antiques).

Darlene,

Treasures from Olana, some of the Church paintings, is at the

Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown now - I believe this is the last few

weeks of the exhibit but I'm not sure - I saw them in June -

spectacular! Also, their Native American Collection, the Thaw

Collection, is outstanding. Really a beautiful and exquisite art museum

just south of US 20 and Cooperstown is a gem of a small town.

Ron,

The site of the 1909 Dosie Creek Bridge is on the original, unpaved alignment

between Stroud and Davenport. If you have "Oklahoma Route 66," see the map on

page 93. Otherwise, traveling eastbound from Davenport, about a mile out of town

you will cross Dry Creek. At the top of the next hill the paving curves sharply

left; the old dirt road continues straight. Dosie Creek is about a mile down

this road. About a mile east of the bridge site is a T-intersection with the

Ozark Trail obelisk. From there, several turns on section line roads take you

into Stroud.

Speaking of the Ozark Trail and their 1918 convention in Miami, one of my most

prized road-related artifacts is an authentic lapel pin from the 1916 Ozark

Trails convention in Oklahoma City. As we learned from the John's post, the

Trails has a fascinating history. I'm not sure if the obelisk at Langston, OK is

still there. Guess I should check that out since I'm only about 30 miles from

there.

Yeah, you're right Darlene, Skyline wasn't built to easily navigate with

large vehicles and/or trailers. That happens when you build a highway on

the ridge line of the Shenandoahs. As a matter of fact, commercial trucks

can't travel on it at all with the exception of delivery vehicles for the

lodges and gas stations, I suppose. I remember braking quite a bit with a

small sedan.

And unforunately, I haven't been to that part of New York state or PA...only

been as far north as Allentown in the Pa mountains. Fortunately, Alex Burr

has. Give it up, Alex....lol. He and I are also members of the US 40 Yahoo

group....

Ah, yes, Allentown - been thru there. Sometimes

going to, or from, Memphis, I'll take 209 between

Milford and Marshalls Creed, PA, then cut off 80 onto

33 to Route 22. Now theres a stretch that will curl

your toes - the Easton/Bethlehem/Allantown corridor on

22!!!! Wall to wall traffic going way, way to fast,

even tho it's multi-lane!!!!! You don't DRIVE that

corridor - you survive!!!

Happy traveling.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Oh Alex, do memories of that stretch of 22 come back - white knuckle

time. Seems like everyone is in a NASCAR simulation but

nobody told you!

Cheers, Carol

The Lincoln Highway ( http://www.lincolnhighwayoh.com ) goes through Canton

and the section east of there is quite nice. Near Minerva you can even drive

several miles of brick. A couple of official byways, CanalWay & Amish

Country, are near by ( http://www.byways.org ). To the south, the historic

Zoar settlement is one of several historic sites in the area. The next issue

of AR, currently pictured on the group's home page, has an article on the

Amish Country Byway, I have some pictures of Zoar and its surroundings at

http://www.dennygibson.com/DayTrips/Trip5index.htm, and of the LH around

Canton at http://www.dennygibson.com/ohlh0405/day01/index.htm . I can't help

you on the antiques. I may be one but I don't know much about shopping for

them:-)

I forgot to mention - came thru that 22 corridor

back in 1988 after my Hudson car club national in

York. They were doing construction. 'tis a real

thrill to be going thru those concrete road barriers

on either side with 18 wheelers in front of you and in

back - and everybody is going between 70 and 75. This

was around 6am before the work started. If anybody

had so much as sneezed there would have been fur,

feathers and busted car/truck parts all over the

place.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

Suggestion - pick another moderator for the week?

Spammers are on constant duty, looking for easy prey.

I run US Highways Yahoo group, and have two 'backup' moderators, folks I

trust, and a couple more in mind if I lose them.

Greetings All,

To respond to a couple of questions raised about Vol. 1, No. 2:

Denny: Yes, the Ohio Scenic Byways insert is universal. Ohio people are special.

I thought everyone knew that. ;-)

Bliss: Rocinante - I can't answer your question about the V-6. I will refer this

to Mr. Brusca and we'll try to publish the question and the response as a letter

in #3 or #4.

Joe: If you had to read "Don Quixote" in Spanish, I think I speak for many in

saying, Better you than me!

We greatly appreciate all the feedback. Please send us letters for our Write of

Way department. Raise any on-topic issue that you like. All the praise is great,

but we would like to see some other comments or hear about your vision for

American Road. Send your mail to me at: jross@mockturtlepress.com. Thanks!

Jim R.
