    Lucille Hammons ran this station with her husband, beginning in 1941. After his death in 1971 she continued running the station for many years until her own death at age 85 in 2000.

    The legend is that the owners of the station bought a set of $10 counterfeiting plates from a traveling salesman in the early 1930s during the Great Depression. Eventually the counterfeit $10 bills were traced back to the owners, who were arrested. The station closed and never reopened.

    That tow truck in the background was the basis of Tow Mater in the movie Cars. There weren't allowed to use the name so it was dubbed "Tow Tater" instead.

    This photo was taken in June 2007, about a year before fire destroyed the cafe. It has since been rebuilt and thanks to the rock wall exterior, looks much the same.

    Bob Waldmire was a well-known artist who traveled up and down Route 66 in this 1972 VW Microbus. It now resides in a museum in Pontiac, IL.
