...I have a second opportunity! Yep, my nephew will have his first sibling in a few months. Wonder if his sibling will be into cars, too...?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my role as uncle & am looking forward to being an uncle again. My "corrupting skills", originally developed for friends' kids, have sharpened with my nephew these last 3+ years. Still don't know why kids like me so much....

:) Thank you, Denny! It's the new leaner/meaner me ... just maybe not as mean as I'd like sometimes...HA! Sure hope we can meet up sometime this year.

Looking good!....but did the rehab folks cough up a few bucks for the free T shirt ad?

Hard to believe I've finished my 36 sessions of Cardiac Rehab for my 11/11/2011 open heart surgery; last session was 04/13/2012. I plan to return to the facility via their monthly fee, but I have to find a new job first. Wouldn't mind some other dreams/goals coming true, either...just sayin'.

Some people have likened CR to watching paint dry, but not for me. It made me a bit more "lean'n'mean". More importantly, it was fun, thanks to the nursing staff & fellow rehabbers.

Becky calls this a community, but it is practically a family, with new members adding terrific insights and valuable information and experiences.

Dave ... I see this phenomenon on most boards/groups to which I post and am a member. It is simply amazing how people grow to be a family, even when you've never met in person. This is part of the reason I started doing my road trips way back in 2003 ... I wanted to meet the people behind the screen names ... and I've had a blast every year.

    ABOUT A MONTH TO GO!

    Will you join us?

    2012 anniversaries...

...35th of my November 1977 (1st) open heart surgery

    ...25th of my March 1987 (2nd) OHS

...20th of buying my 1st car (1979 MC, October 1992)

...10th of buying my 1972 MC (March 2002)

...3rd of buying my 1979 Caprice Classic

The ONE fall I HAVE to put my MCs away early (11/11/2011 open heart surgery), we don't have a measurable snowfall requiring tons of salt until JANUARY 2012.

THEN, the ONE spring we have summer-like temperatures & gorgeous sunny weather in EARLY March, the MCs don't come out to play because I can't justify the expense of full insurance [winter months, my MCs are on comprehensive only, cheap to keep!] due to unemployment.

So, most likely, only my 1979 Caprice Classic will be at the Jump Start Cruise Night Party.

I'm posting the possibility of a new networking/brainstorming group to numerous boards/groups; the more diverse the experiences represented, the more likely the ideas exchanged will be beneficial to multiple people. I see this as a way to share info about employment, health issues, automotive interests, etc. You do NOT have to live in Chicagoland to be a member & participate!

    Possible initial meeting dates...

    ...Sunday, 04/22/2012 (afternoon)

    ...Tuesday, 04/24/2012 (evening)

    ...Saturday, 04/28/2012 (morning)

    Possible initial meeting locations...

...Elgin IL's Colonial Cafe ("meeting room" area)

...Elgin IL's Gail Borden Library (meeting room)

    Who is IN?!

I've been networking & sending resumes as much as possible, but nothing so far. My background is mostly customer service, including a Help Desk job working with Advance Ship Notices through EDI. The last job wasn't exactly what the title indicated. I've been researching non-profits, but those are struggling.... I'd love to get into marketing in some capacity, radio, writing, event creation/hosting (done a number of gatherings in the Chicago area, though I'm told that doesn't count as "professional" experience), etc.

I'm not panicking...yet. I've kept busy by going through stuff in my room, lots of Nephew Time, attending workshops/presentations, finishing my 36 sessions of Cardiac Rehab (definite PLUS), etc.

  12. You definitely are a car guy Cort. You nailed all of them except the ES 350, which is a Lexus.

Ah, yes. Heh ... some of those, I didn't think I did have correct...ha! And, thank you.

My company does a lot of work with auto and motorcycle manufacturers; things like new product development, customer satisfaction, early buyer studies, etc. We specialize in something called a "car clinic" where we invite owners of cars from a particular segment (e.g., midsize owners, minivan owners) to come in and give us feedback on a prototype vehicle being developed by one of the manufacturers. We try to determine the relative strengths and weaknesses of the new design and provide feedback to the manufacturer so they can make whatever changes they deem suitable before the car is released into the marketplace. Because of the long lead time in vehicle development, this process typically takes place 3-4 years before the planned release of the vehicle.

Is your company hiring? This sounds like something that would be right up my alley in terms of interest and abilities. Sounds fun and interesting, too.

And yes, my newest car (and daily driver for now) is my 1972 Monte Carlo. I put a lot of miles on my other cars too. When the weather is bad I do my best not to drive any of them and I drive Sharon's Ford Escape instead. If I decide that I really need to have a new car I am inclined toward further impracticality, so maybe a Miata, Mini Cooper S or a Corvette. I can never quite stop stalking cars on ebay though, so my next new car is likely to be another old one. :P

LOL! I'm only laughing at this because I see myself in it ... almost exactly ... with the exceptions of the Ford and the Miata, MCS or Corvette. BUT ... I'm always checking out craiglist, ebay, etc. I'd love to add a 1989 Caprice Classic to my car family, but so far, I haven't found anything suitable or (at this point) affordable. Ugh. Anyway, somehow I missed (or forgotten, perhaps?) that your '72 MC is your daily ... that's sweet! Have you joined the First Gen MC Club, by chance?

I too do not care for alphanumeric auto badging, nor do I particularily care for renaming of models. That said, I give Ford credit for the Mustang, currently the longest-running continuous nameplate sold in the US. Every model year since it's mid-year introduction in 1964.

This does not count names like Impala, which first debuted in 1958 but has not run continuously in every model year since. No Chevys were badged "Impala" from 1986 through 1992, and again from 1997-99.

The Mustang took the longest-used name title in 2009, after Pontiac dropped the Grand Prix nameplate that had appeared every model year since 1962.

If one counts light trucks, however, then the Suburban is by far the longest-lived nameplate, having been used by Chevrolet/GMC since the mid-1930s!

Glad you mentioned the Suburban! I started reading your post and kept thinking, but the Suburban far surpasses even the Mustang. :)

    Thank you, Mike.

    Hmm....automotive market researcher? Tell me more...that sounds...interesting.

As to the question you posed, sad to say, some of those I don't even immediately recognize, and I like to think of myself as a car enthusiast. Of those, these jumped out at me immediately as ones I definitely know ... CTS (Cadillac), 300 (Chrysler) and MKZ (Lincoln). Without "looking", I believe the 9-3 is a SAAB and the CC is a VW...I think. A few of the other ones I've heard of, of course, but couldn't tell you with certainty the manufacturer. Example, I want to say the M3 and M45 are either BMW or Infiniti, but not sure. The ES 350 has me thinking Mercedes Benz. Golly geez, maybe I'm not that much of an enthusiast after all ... HA!

And, I had to do some calculations ... your newest car is a 1972? That's your MC, right? What is your daily driver? My newest car is a 1987 model, but my daily driver (for now) is the 1979 Caprice Classic. Sadly, I'm thinking if I want to get hired I should get a newer and/or a "more presentable" car. UGH.

  16. I've never stayed there but I've heard good reports about the Ohio House Motel in Chicago from Route 66 travelers.

I, too, have heard nothing but good reports in the last few years about the OHM. I've never stayed there, but we drive past it on the way to Northwestern for all of my heart-related appointments/checkups. They seem to have spruced it up a bit over the last few years.

A word of caution, however ... the last time we were in Chicago (early January for another follow-up for my 11/11/2011 open heart surgery), they were just starting what appeared to be "major" road construction, particularly around the OHM. I don't know what they were doing or how long that is going to be the case. You might want to check into it before making plans....

FOLLOW-UP to STOP RE-NAMING MY CAR!

In case you missed it, Drew created this timeline graphic:

    gallery_51_134_3277.png

I have some possible follow-up ideas; this is just the tip of the iceberg. NO, this is not a "domestic bashing" article; that wasn't the intent. The article idea was mentioned almost a year ago. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to write it ... partly because of my own disappointment in a certain unnamed division of GM that opted to turn the Celebrity into a monte carlo AND an impala, by way of the Lumina. Recently unemployed, I had time to dig into it; the more I dug, the more intrigued I was.

    For the record, I've never owned a Toyota/Honda. My vehicles include 5 MCs (1972/1976/1979/1981/1987) & a 1979 Caprice Classic (w/NO connection to front-wheel drive).

For a "Reader's Digest" summary of my "car family", see this article I wrote for Motor Gnomes:

    http://www.motorgnomes.com/2012/01/pictures-a-family-of-cars/

Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but they don’t share the complete tale. And, the complete tale might be a bit wordy, so a brief “Reader’s Digest” version….

1973. The newly-redesigned Monte Carlo was named Motor Trend Car Of The Year … and I was born. Coincidence? Fate? Ironic twist?

  18. It was common practice, at least in Southern California, to control auto traffic to one way on treacherous mountain roads, sort of like we control traffic at road construction sites today. Of course the controllers didn't have two way radios, so the last car in the convoy was given a token, in my experience often a red flag on a stick. The token was then handed to the controller at the other end to signify that the last car in a convoy had come through. It was a big deal for me as a youngster when we got the flag. :gavel:

    I can imagine!

Though obviously not the same, this reminds me of how big of a deal it was for us kids (my sister and I, that is) to have a semi honk back at us when we did the yanking motion on road trips. What a blast that was.

Spring is a great time to be a sports fan, with NCAA March Madness, the start of baseball season, near the end of the basketball & hockey seasons, soccer season, etc. Watching the Cincinnati/Ohio State NCAA game & anticipating the upcoming Kentucky/Louisville match, I thought about rivalries between cities, particularly those of all the different Chicago sports teams. What other cities/teams have rivalries?

    CHICAGO vs DETROIT

Thank you, Dave and Denny ... I sure appreciate the support! Dave, I've already started taking advantage of the local community college ... sure has been helpful in making connections, etc. And, Denny, trying hard not to let it ruin things for me ... and the "nephew time" has been awesome...something I wouldn't have experienced if I still had a job right now....

Anyway, I'm sorry I haven't visited here lately, but it has been a hectic few weeks...

    ...job hunting/applying

    ...COBRA/continued health insurance

    ...transferring 401k into IRA

    ...projects I want to do

    ...tasks I have to do

...continuing my 36 sessions of Cardiac Rehab

    ...writing

    ...considering a "mini road trip"....

I've also attended a few workshops at our local library, including small businesses/non-profits & job search techniques/processes. I plan to attend a few more workshops, including a networking group.

Luckily, unemployment was authorized, but it'd be nice to be employed. I'm still in a daze & frustrated by recent events, particularly going from 4 straight years of stellar reviews to no longer having a job. I have a variety of experience as a CSR, Help Desk Specialist & Web Content Associate. I also have experience/training in radio, writing, editing, file organization, event creation/hosting. So, I'd love to get into radio or writing or marketing/advertising.

Meantime ... I've had some AWESOME "nephew time".

03/02/2012 [the anniversary of the Faith (Batavia IL) COB 1998 church sanctuary fire for which I was the Building Committee Chair], I took my nephew to the Hawthorne Hill Nature Center in the morning; we watched CARS in the afternoon.

03/09/2012, I took him to the HHNC & a fire station in the morning; we watched CARS 2 in the afternoon. PICS of this adventure:

    STOP RE-NAMING MY CAR!

This editorial was fun to write, partly because I love history & timelines of cars, roads, etc. I suspect the fact that I enjoy timelines is part of the attraction/addiction I have to watching the brackets as teams advance & others are eliminated in the NCAA basketball tournament....

    Toyota Camry. Honda Accord.

Since 1982 and 1976 respectively, these two models have evolved and changed with the times, without enduring a name change. Similar history can be traced for such entries as the Honda Odyssey. The first one wasn't much about which to write, but Honda persevered with the name and developed it into a top seller in its segment.

While some examples of continuous monickers don't celebrate similar history, the names have stuck. For instance, the Nissan Quest, first available in 1993 (with a re-badge model sold as the Mercury Villager), is today in its fourth generation even though none of the variations have particularly resonated with buyers.

Yet, American manufacturers have a knack for giving us a plethora of different names for virtually the same model. GM, Ford and Chrysler do this, perhaps too well.

  24. Dave,

Now THOSE are AWESOME. Simple as that. I've looked through old family post cards, pictures, etc., and something about them always just makes me pause and really "take them in" ... studying the pictures, wondering what the writer was thinking as they wrote it ... wondering if the writer wondered how the recipient would appreciate it, etc.

    Thanks for sharing these!
