  1. I believe I own the lone Vibe in American Road Magazine Forum's fleet of Matrices and Matrix derivatives and I'm quite happy with it. Around 34 MPG and enough room in back to sleep occasionally.

I definitely had been considering the Vibe when I ended up buying the Acura TSX used instead. I still admire the Vibe, and actually like the look better than the Matrix. I am glad to hear that it works well for you Denny.

  2. Who is the audience? Members, visitors, AR subscribers, the world? Are they vacationers with casual interest, or road geeks, or…?

Are the purposes to inform concerning directions, history, artifacts, attractions, then/now…or what?

How will it be used? Pre trip planning, on route in motels, in the car, in conjunction with GPS, photo geotagging….?

How and where will people get a copy? Related….what is the form, paper, CD, website….?

What are the criteria for choosing a road / project? Popularity, geographic location, novelty, historic interest, potential size of audience, member interest, access to needed vintage resources for directions, available images/ads …..or?

Question 1: I think the audience would be limited, but would be a mixture of most of these groups.

2: As I still do not use GPS or take a computer on vacations, I would be one who would use it in preplanning, and be looking over my map during the trip.

3: I think that internet or CD copies would work allowing buyers/users to print their own copies. Maybe hardcopies would work if they were to be distributed to businesses along the route.

4: I think a popular route such as Route 66 or the National Road would be best for a first trial as it would help see what the market would be, could get funding from advertisers, and would be good from the historical approach even for those who would not be able to travel the route.

I would see that a basic route instruction, with some land marks that remain being highlighted would be a good first approach, and then more bells and whistles being added if the interest warrants the effort.

  3. I just wanted to let you all know that America On Wheels has a new display opening this weekend on American Oval Track Race Cars. I have posted some photos on the Flick'r account. These are not the final photos as the show gallery display does not open until this weekend, but I could not resist taking some photos while I was in cleaning tires and helping out today. It was very cool to be working on the tires of an A J Foyt Coyote that could be the same one I saw him drive at Pocono Speedway about 100 years ago (okay, maybe not that far back, but close). I hope some folks get to stop in to see them.

  4. Dave,

We have been staying a bit above freezing here, but south of us got snow cover yesterday, canceling John McCain's outdoor rally in Quakertown. About 50 miles north of here, Tobyhanna had 16 inches of snow yesterday, but we just had lots of wind and rain. And it just started up again, just to make the World Series more interesting if they try to play tonight.

    GO PHILLIES!!!

  5. As much as I like AMCs, when they jacked up the 12-year-old Hornet Sportabout and stuck a Jeep-derived driveline under it, it fairly screamed, "We're in deep dookie here and are scrambling to stay alive!!"

Which is the truth. They were desperate, and they invented the Subaru Outback, just too soon.

I don't own an Outback, but we have a Legacy wagon with AWD and love it.

  6. ........100 pounds too large made me chuckle.

Most of my former dogs were in the 70-80 pound range. One Black and Tan Coonhound I had was lighter in weight, but extremely long legged. At the time I had a Cavalier Station Wagon with a sun roof. I often drove with the roof out, and the seats down. Champ would stand on all four with his head completely above the roof of the car. I just had to learn to use just the outside mirrors as all I saw in the rear view was his chest. I think he may have cause a few accidents as people turned their heads to watch him as we passed in opposite directions. I do sure miss having a dog, but make do with my son's Great Dane, and my daughters huge Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. But I do not miss the shedding of hair in the house.

  7. Keep,

Sounds like the trip is off to a great start. I normally prefer a road trip this is only half planned, and there is leeway for improvising as you go. It sounds like this trip will be a lot of fun.

Since I am not traveling for a while, it will be fun to be traveling vicariously with you. Have some fun for me...

  8. This board software has something kind of similar, Dave. If you click the "view new posts" link on the forum's main page, you will see a list of threads with new posts. To the left of each thread's title is a little orange square with a little white right triangle in the corner. Click it, and you will go to the first post in that thread that you haven't read yet.

Thank you. I never realized that feature was there. That makes this much better for my methods. Maybe I will next start to read the instruction books with new products and software before I start using them. Thanks for the help.

  9. Hi Dave,

Do you know what software is used to run that Forum? I'm wondering if this is a limitation of the software that we are using. I'll have to connect with our webmaster.

    Thanks,

    Becky

I do not know the name of the current software they are using. I know that the owner of the forum has updated a couple of times, but as long as I have belonged (since May of 2007), the British Car Forum has had that feature. I am sure if your webmaster contacts Basil, the "forum emperor", he would be willing to help. He is a good guy. PM me if you need me to contact him for you...

  10. It looks like the foliage should be really nice this weekend on the South Mountain of the Lehigh Valley. I will be heading over to Goodman Stadium for the Lehigh football game, and this will probably be the best week for the colors as the team is on the road the next two weeks. I need to take the Triumph out a bit this week then to admire more of the color as it develops. Some of the trees are pretty good here already.

  11. . I still hope that and feel that next month's grounding is only temporary though that could be wishful thinking.

There may be more to it but and I'll admit to being biased but it appears to be largely political and at least partly the fallout from a labor dispute. Here is an article from about a year ago.

I sent out a bunch of emails with links to friends so and my Congressman to see if we can make this go away...

  12. The Queen was in town yesterday and I took the opportunity to get some pictures. She'll be back on the 21st for what is her last scheduled visit. I hope to be there for the planned tribute that day. Although no event is scheduled, she will stop in Madison on the 20th and 23rd. Tribute events are planned for Louisville, Memphis, and several other cities as she heads home to New Orleans. All scheduled stops are shown here.

A shot of yesterday's departure is here

    Denny,

The Delta Queen has been in our plans for some future trips, but now it sounds like we will be denied the opportunity based on the decisions of bureaucrat and/or legislators. I took the time to sign the guest book. Who knows if the DQ can be saved, but thanks for giving me the heads up to try and help.

  13. It does sound like large geographic counties should consider the split into separate counties when the population growth makes that more efficient and practical. Counties are often fairly compact here in Eastern PA, so travel is not often a major consideration here. Keep us informed of changes in this situation. It seems like it could be an interesting story that we won't hear much of in the Lehigh Valley.

  14. We had the loss of our long time companion and travel buddy, Bo the Malamute Wonder Dog this morning. I hope I don’t sound flip, because there are tears in my eyes, but I know how to deal with grief. When one door closes, you open another,,..,so we are going on a road trip.

Sheila and I are thinking maybe Southern and Central Utah and Northern Arizona, inspired by beamerchef and the 1917 Motormen. We will be posting, but perhaps not my regular daily trip details.

I have access to bemerchef’s great material, and I invite other suggestions. We have some fixed commitments here tomorrow, but I’m thinking we will get on the road Friday of Saturday.

    Condolences are not necessary.

Keep the Show on the Road! :)

    Dave

    Dave,

If you are going to get to the Logan Utah area, you may wish to consult our own Brian Atkinson's website relating to Scenic Route 89. I got some advice from him when Peg and I were in Salt Lake City for our son's volleyball tournament and wanted to get to Jackson Hole and Grand Teton. Brian gave me a step by step route with restaurants and sites, and we had a marvelous time taking advantage of all the great information he provided.

Enjoy your trip and take care my good friend.
