  1. Although I am driving from Allentown PA to Rodanthe, NC, this is not really a road trip in the normal sense as we are planning one stop overnight on the way south, and have not decided the return route yet. I am heading using the Chesapeake Tunnel/Bridge route south with a hotel stay overnight. What I really hope to find from this group is a number of restaurants to try in OBX, as well as some interesting places to visit around Rodanthe besides the obvious Kitty Hawk and The Lost Colony, plus an overnight suggestion for the northern trip.

After 36 hours at home we will fly to Albuquerque hoping our son is still in training at Kirtland AFB. If he is, we will not be needing as many day trips, but if he has returned to Okinawa by the time we arrive, we will want a number of day trips as we are booked for a week in the Nativo Lodge. We have been to Sante Fe, Tinkertown, El Malpais, the Unser Museum, Old Town, Madrid, Sandia Tramway, and the petrogylph site in the past. I wonder if anyone has information on the Wild Wolf Sanctuary which is west of Albuquerque, or other reasonable suggestions in the area. We are also always on the lookout for new places to dine, but we are not adventurous eaters of spice food.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  2. Well, I am finally the coordinator and creator of an event at America On Wheels museum in Allentown PA. This weekend we will be holding our first ever slot car race when East Coast HO Road Racing brings one of their tracks to the museum for a sanctioned HO race on Saturday. Also on Saturday Carerra USA will be bringing one of their digital 1/32 tracks to the museum to allow patrons to try it out on Saturday. On Sunday, the ECHORR track will be available for patrons to try the hand at running an HO car on a quality track. On both days we will have vendors from multiple states selling slot car sets, tracks, cars, and parts in several scales, and my display case of slot cars will be there as normal too.

One of the racers who will be participating on Saturday is Henry Harnish who won the first Aurora/Ford Nationals on the Today show at age 15. Admission to the slot car show includes admission to the museum, and our changing collection of transportation. Our current show is 100 Years of Chevrolet that includes a 1918 V-18, a 1953 Corvette, a 1955 Nomad, and 1967 Camaro Indianapolis Pace Car, plus much more. You can see some of the museum and get an idea of what a slot car show includes by watching

I hope to see some of you at America On Wheels this weekend.

  3. Dave,

Those are terrific pictures! Is the '52 Bel-Aire color original? I can't recall that tone. In any event, it is a beauty! (BTW, I'm campaigning ;) for two tone paint jobs on new cars...and you have several vintage examples in the collection.)

I looked twice at the tires on the red Corvette. They must be vintage! They look like the old nylon or fiberglass models we used to sell when I worked in a service station in the late 50's and early 60's.

    Love to see this stuff!

    Dave

Keep the Show on the Road!

    Dave,

The color looks similar to the Bittersweet that is listed as a Chevrolet Color for 1952, but the museum car looks a bit lighter/brighter.I do not know how accurate the website is either, but this is a really fun show. I will need to check out the tires with a closer inspection this week...

    Take care Buddy,

  4. America on Wheels in Allentown currently is opening our new exhibit featuring many firsts from Chevrolet's 100 years in business. We are awaiting the 1911 Little in a few weeks, but we have a 1967 Indy Pace Car Camaro, a 1953 Corvette, 1 1918 V-8, a 1962 Chevy II with less than 1500 original miles, and a 1955 Nomad among many others. You can see some of my photos of the show on Flickr, as well as a

I made to promote the Slot Car Weekend I am running at the museum on July 16 & 17. It is fun to be able to combine two hobbies into one and share them with the community.

The Chevy show will run through March, so stop in at 5 North Front Street, Allentown PA if you get a chance...and let me know if you are coming so I can try to join you for a personal tour...

  5.

So now I'm thinking that after I return, I might sell the 1958, and buy a "less vintage" big ol' car (heavy sedan). Then I'll use it to target some regions in USA and Canada for further investigation on future trips. Maybe a 2000 Mercedes-Benz E320, or some such. Can't imagine doing a lot of traveling in a tiny car, despite the much better mpg. For me at least, something like the Smart is smart for commuting and shopping, but not for heavy-duty highway adventures.

    Tom

Tom, at that time you may wish to look towards a MINI as they are not small on the inside, but get better gas mileage and are fun to drive! You can road test our MINI Clubman when you are in Allentown.

  6. Tom,

When I have made the Allentown to Annapolis run, I have gone I-78 to Harrisburg, and pick up I-83 till I get close to Baltimore. From that area it does get congested. You can also take US 15 towards Gettsyburg instead of going directly south through York. There are parallel roads that you can follow for most of the stretches until Baltimore comes into play. I often end up jumping off and taking an earlier road until we decide we need to make up some time, and then I return to the Interstate. I too avoid I-95 like the plague most of the time...

  7. I saw it was mentioned before, but I was wondering if anyone had some opinions of the place. The location is on Central Avenue close to the Kimo Theatre, meaning I can do some foot exploring photography, and it is not a bad drive to Kirtland AFB where our son will be residing temporarily when we visit. Please let me know if you have had any experience with this hotel, good or bad. Thanks.

  8. Just to get things started ... if you were driving a "slightly used" car (i.e. 1958) across the USA, what tools/spares would you bring along?

Other than a healthy credit card and your AAA telephone number.

Plus, one thing I've always wondered about: when you're traveling, do you do anything special to keep your car safe in parking lots (motel, sight seeing, restaurant, etc.)?

    Thanks.

    Tom

    Tom,

In 1958 I am not even sure if we locked the car. We normally stayed at motels that had one space in front of each motel room, and you parked right outside your room. Our family never traveled with tools as my Dad had no clue, and passed on his do-it-yourself knowledge to me, which is why I do have a credit card and AAA card when traveling. With a trunk like your MB, you should have everything of value well hidden from prying eyes.

Now I would carry the spare tire and jack, and some flares and reflectors to make a broken down car visible. My cell phone would be my next tool to use to call AAA.

  9. Cort,

On the slot cars, I get them at hobby shops, from on-line dealers, on eBay, and at slot car shows like the one we are having at America On Wheels on July 16 and 17, including racing, available track time, and vendors of new and used slot items as well as custom HO slot bodies from a dealer known as "Resin Dude".

As to the lack of versatility of the Clubman, it won't work well for hauling lumber or snow blowers, but it will hold several weeks worth of luggage when the rear seats are not being used. We will use our Forester for times when we need to haul lots of stuff, or in bad weather or we need ground clearance. The MINI is just plain fun to drive, and is great gad-about type vehicle around town and for shopping and two-lane road trips...

  10. In the last few months, a new museum opened in Allentown. The Mack Truck Museum is a new location for the majority of their collection, except for what is on display at America On Wheels museum, about 2 miles away. The location of the new museum is the former Mack Truck Research and Development location inside their Test Track. The building is now their Sales Center and Museum. Truck deliveries are made their to customers, including a recent large delivery to UPS.

But the new museum keeps much of the technology of the former purpose of the building, with crane tracks in the ceiling, and even the former "silent" room for testing the sound volume of new vehicles is used as a display. You can see photos of the museum here. Now there are two great transportation museums in Allentown.

  11. This was something I wanted to start doing here in Allentown around 1980, and I was always too busy. I wanted to pick about 10 intersections in the city, and a few other sites in town too, then go back around the same date every 5 years and take the same photos over. But of course I have been too busy (or lethargic) to ever start the project, and now with only about 25 years of life expectancy, I wonder if it would be worth the project time as the duration will be much less...

  12. Tom,

First I must say I am so glad to see you are posting here.

I have known Tom for a few years when we both joined the British Car Forum concerning our Triumph TR3's. My wife Peg and I got to meet Tom in person in November of 2009 when we went to Old Sturbridge Village for Thanksgiving where Tom has been a serving as a farmer raising crops in a historical fashion. He also introduced us to the New England Air Museum where he volunteers in research. So you know that Tom is interested in much of the history of any region.

As you work out your details Tom, I am sure that Denny, Dave, and others will be able to give you lots of great advice. Keep posting here, and at the BCF. Peg and I await your visit for her Bread Pudding and much more.

  13. Cort,

I had not checked the links, so I did not realize we were talking small scale. I keep adding to the slot cars, having gotten a few more including a nice Porsche Targa in Red with a Black top in HO

    Dave,

What scale buildings are you going with. I may have some extra HO scale buildings if you are interested. Some are built and some are kits.

  14. We just traded my wife's 2003 Subaru Legacy Wagon for a 2011 Subaru Forester Touring. Better gas mileage, and our mechanic had thought the head gasket on the old one was showing signs of starting to leak. This will be our new take stuff to the campground car with better ground clearance for snow too.

I also just added the 2009 Vespa but just for around town. I am half way through the Motorcycle Safety Program. It was nearly 45 hours on the pad yesterday in temps between 32 and 36 degrees with a stiff breeze. I am a bit stiff today, but if I pass the course, the Vespa with its CVT will be a breeze to ride.

  15. I have only driven a few miles through Idaho so far, when I went from Salt Lake City and then to Jackson WY. The return trip to fly home did not include Idaho at all. And between air fare and TSA situations, and the cost of trips, travel may be curtailed for a couple of years for us too. I will continue to research future travel to the area though in hopes of improvements again. It is a beautiful region of our country.
