Drive the loops between historic Denver Mountain Parks: 40 Winding Miles from Golden to Evergreen to Morrison
While many of the Colorado Byways are remote, this one is not. In fact, a little more than 15 miles west of Denver, it’s an easy day trip, and beautiful hikes, delicious restaurants, and local breweries await a byway visitor.
Two historic routes combine to make this byway: the Lariat Trail Scenic Mountain Drive* (1913) and the Bear Creek Canyon Scenic Mountain Drive* (1930s). Both are listed on the National Historic Registry, so perhaps it’s not surprising that the Lariat Loop Scenic & Historic Byway is one of 13 National Byways in Colorado. This byway takes the traveler back to when motoring was a Sunday afternoon activity.
The role the byway has played in Colorado and Denver’s history is one of the reasons it is truly unique among byways. Intertwining stories of major dinosaur discoveries, prominent families, celebrity cowboys in the form of Buffalo Bill, and significant Native American figures, the Lariat Loop encapsulates the narrative of Colorado’s Front Range. It marks the spot where Denver collides with the famous Rocky Mountains. More: HeidiTown.com
