Keep the Show on the Road!
Mississippi is one of my favorite states to visit. I “discovered” along the Hypotenuse the village of Georgetown. The businesses had moved out to the highway and the old downtown and city park were left to their fate. An old grocery store and proud old bank were still recognizable, but the highlight was the park. Video 11 Georgetown, Mississippi http://www.vimeo.com/973959 The swings and merry go round were still used. The tether ball post with its broken chain stood abandoned, but the small gazebo was still used. I’ll post stills of Georgetown later, but for now, enjoy a brief glimpse of 1940’s America. Video 12 Mississippi River http://www.vimeo.com/973975 My father had a grand baritone singing voice, something I definitely did not inherit! One of his favorite songs was Old Man River, and he often said in his later years that he wished he had seen the river. He never did, so I planned to play a recording of him singing along the Mississippi. I found the opportunity in Vicksburg, though the people near the car must have thought I was a little nuts to play an old scratchy recording on the car radio while I made my video. The recording is from a performance of a service club choir he belonged to in the late 1940’s. Video 13 Wild Turkey http://www.vimeo.com/973979 This Thanksgiving dinner “on the hoof” was living safely within the Vicksburg National Military Park, assuring a long life! It is the only “wild turkey” I have ever seen, though I used to drink his namesake occasionally to avoid rattle snake bites. Evidently it worked. I am snake bite free. Keep the Show on the Road! mobilene
What a nice tribute to your father. You are fortunate to have that recording. For many of us, our family's talents are never captured. Of course, every time I hear Old Man River, I think of Stan Freberg's version, Elderly Man River.
