Kip Welborn, Route 66 Association of Missouri Motor Tour Committee Press Release: The Route 66 Association of Missouri Announces its 27th Annual Motor Tour: “90 Years of Route 66—Let’s Get Wild” on September 9—11, 2016 The Route 66 Association of Missouri will hold its 27th Annual Motor Tour, “90 Years of Route 66—Let’s Get Wild”, on September 9—11, 2016. Our first “hub-and-spoke” Motor Tour last year got rave reviews, so we decided to do it again this year. The “hub” for three days of Missouri Historic Route 66-focused travel and fun will be Kirkwood. One “spoke” will be a trip to the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park and back, and the other “spoke” will be a trip to Sullivan. We will visit several “hidden gems” of wildlife along Route 66 near St. Louis as well as celebrate 90 years of Route 66 by exploring a special exhibit on Route 66 in St. Louis. On Friday, September 9th, Motor Tour registration will be from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Best Western Kirkwood Inn in Kirkwood. The Motel is holding a block of rooms until August 26th. For reservations, Tourists must contact the Motel directly at (314) 821-3950 and mention the Motor Tour. Each paid registration will receive a dash plaque and window decal. Guides identifying places to visit and sights to see, including activities and things to do in the area, will be provided. A set of driving instructions will also be provided. T-shirts and other memorabilia will be available for purchase. A mini-tour on Friday will be a special presentation just for us at the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park. Aviary experts will introduce us to several raptors and other winged creatures. The cost to attend this optional activity is $7.00 per person. Seating is limited and may sell out. Members of the Association who register early will get the first chance to attend this special event. On Saturday September 10th, check in will resume at 8:00 a.m. After departing at 9:00 a.m., the Motor Tour will follow the eastward “spoke” to the Missouri History Museum inside Forest Park in St. Louis. There we will view the special exhibit “Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis”. The museum is free and open to the public. However, we have arranged for a special guided tour where Museum personnel will guide us and talk about the display in more detail. There will be a $3.00 fee for this optional activity. As always, Tourists may create their own itinerary and stop anywhere they like. At the Sunset Hills Community Center (just two miles away from the Motel) that evening, a hearty and delicious meal of fried chicken and roast beef with all the trimmings will be served. Details regarding the evening’s activities will be announced later. On Sunday September 11th, a nondenominational service will be held at 8:00 a.m. at the Motel. The Motor Tour will depart at 8:30 a.m. and follow the westward “spoke” to Meramec State Park outside Sullivan. On the way, we have arranged to take a private tour of the Endangered Wolf Center located near Eureka. On this special and in-depth optional activity, which costs $20.00 per person, you will learn why there is more to the wolf than just the word “predator”. As always, Tourists may choose to stop anywhere they like. Lone Elk Park, an under-appreciated place right on Route 66 in St. Louis, should also be visited. View the bison and elk which roam freely here, and learn what the U.S. Army did here in World War 2! The Motor Tour will end with a box lunch at a pavilion inside Meramec State Park.
