  1. THE ROUTE 66 ASSOCIATION OF MISSOURI PRESENTS OUR 28TH ANNUAL MOTOR TOUR This year’s Motor Tour, “Down by the Riverside”, will be in the traditional point-to-point format on September 8-10, 2017. Look for the registration flyer included in the meeting notice mailed to you recently. A registration fee of $25 dollars per car applies. Registration and a roadie gathering will be on Friday, September 8th between 4 PM and 9 PM at our host, the Best Western Plus Coach House Inn at 2535 N Glenstone Avenue in Springfield. Call for reservations at (417) 862-0701 by August 25, 2017 and ask for the Route 66 Association Motor Tour rate ($79.99 plus tax for one king or two queen beds). After gathering for a brief driver meeting at 9 AM on Saturday, September 9th, we will journey eastward on our own. We will tour the Bennett Spring Fish Hatchery at 1 PM. This tour is free and no reservation is required. The Days Inn & Suites at 97 Ozark Drive in Cuba is the host motel on Saturday night. Call for reservations at (573) 885-0100 by August 25, 2017 and ask for the Route 66 Association Motor Tour rate ($50.00 or $55.00 plus tax for one king or two queen beds, respectively). The Wagon Wheel Motel on Historic Route 66 at 901 East Washington Boulevard, Cuba is a unique lodging option. Call (573) 885-3411 to learn more about this vintage boutique motel with lovingly restored rooms. Beginning at 6:30 PM on Saturday night, Dottie’s Family Restaurant will host our festivities. Their regular buffet meal with dessert is $10.99 per person, subject to change and paid at the door. You may arrive at Dottie’s and dine whenever you like. Discuss the day with other roadies, look at the Route 66 murals, listen to a presentation on Route 66, and place bids in the Silent Auction. On Sunday, we will leave around 9:00 AM and continue our journey eastward (no drivers meeting). The Motor Tour will end at the Dogwood Shelter inside Route 66 State Park with a BBQ lunch by Super Smokers. After a noon lunch, a walk “Down by the Riverside” to the Meramec River will be offered, weather permitting. Cost of lunch, including drink and dessert, is $15.00 per person paid in advance. Proceeds from the Motor Tour’s Silent Auction go directly to the Preservation Fund. To donate Route 66-themed items, please bring them to an Association meeting or to the registration desk. Contact Tonya Pike or Robert Schulz for more information or to arrange pickup. Remember—your donations make the Silent Auction fun for all AND raise money for preservation! We must receive your signed registration form and payment by August 25, 2017. Check the Association’s website or Facebook page in case any details change. Or contact Robert Schulz at (618) 799-8021; schulz@htc.net or Tommy Pike at (417) 865-1318; furyon66@earthlink.net.
  2. Hello: Attached please find our press release for the 2016 Route 66 Association of Missouri Motor Tour to be held September 9, 10 and 11, 2016. I would appreciate it if you could include it in your magazine or online site. I also attach a picture of some of the fun loving tour goers from last years tour. If you have any questions or need further information please let me know. As always thank you for your assistance. Kip Welborn, Route 66 Association of Missouri Motor Tour Committee Press Release: The Route 66 Association of Missouri Announces its 27th Annual Motor Tour: “90 Years of Route 66—Let’s Get Wild” on September 9—11, 2016 The Route 66 Association of Missouri will hold its 27th Annual Motor Tour, “90 Years of Route 66—Let’s Get Wild”, on September 9—11, 2016. Our first “hub-and-spoke” Motor Tour last year got rave reviews, so we decided to do it again this year. The “hub” for three days of Missouri Historic Route 66-focused travel and fun will be Kirkwood. One “spoke” will be a trip to the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park and back, and the other “spoke” will be a trip to Sullivan. We will visit several “hidden gems” of wildlife along Route 66 near St. Louis as well as celebrate 90 years of Route 66 by exploring a special exhibit on Route 66 in St. Louis. On Friday, September 9th, Motor Tour registration will be from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Best Western Kirkwood Inn in Kirkwood. The Motel is holding a block of rooms until August 26th. For reservations, Tourists must contact the Motel directly at (314) 821-3950 and mention the Motor Tour. Each paid registration will receive a dash plaque and window decal. Guides identifying places to visit and sights to see, including activities and things to do in the area, will be provided. A set of driving instructions will also be provided. T-shirts and other memorabilia will be available for purchase. A mini-tour on Friday will be a special presentation just for us at the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park. Aviary experts will introduce us to several raptors and other winged creatures. The cost to attend this optional activity is $7.00 per person. Seating is limited and may sell out. Members of the Association who register early will get the first chance to attend this special event. On Saturday September 10th, check in will resume at 8:00 a.m. After departing at 9:00 a.m., the Motor Tour will follow the eastward “spoke” to the Missouri History Museum inside Forest Park in St. Louis. There we will view the special exhibit “Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis”. The museum is free and open to the public. However, we have arranged for a special guided tour where Museum personnel will guide us and talk about the display in more detail. There will be a $3.00 fee for this optional activity. As always, Tourists may create their own itinerary and stop anywhere they like. At the Sunset Hills Community Center (just two miles away from the Motel) that evening, a hearty and delicious meal of fried chicken and roast beef with all the trimmings will be served. Details regarding the evening’s activities will be announced later. On Sunday September 11th, a nondenominational service will be held at 8:00 a.m. at the Motel. The Motor Tour will depart at 8:30 a.m. and follow the westward “spoke” to Meramec State Park outside Sullivan. On the way, we have arranged to take a private tour of the Endangered Wolf Center located near Eureka. On this special and in-depth optional activity, which costs $20.00 per person, you will learn why there is more to the wolf than just the word “predator”. As always, Tourists may choose to stop anywhere they like. Lone Elk Park, an under-appreciated place right on Route 66 in St. Louis, should also be visited. View the bison and elk which roam freely here, and learn what the U.S. Army did here in World War 2! The Motor Tour will end with a box lunch at a pavilion inside Meramec State Park. Tourists might consider touring Fisher Cave inside the Park on their own. Visit missouri66.org to download a registration form, find more details, or check for updates. Or visit us on Facebook at facebook.com/missouri66. 6. Here are some photos an info about one awesome piece of viaduct across the river from Memphis TN...the first bridge that carried vehicular traffic across the Mississippi South of St. Louis. https://rudkipon66.shutterfly.com/ Enjoy! SGF, Kip
  7. Here are the pictures and the story of this years motor tour. It was a great time, and thanks to all who participated! SGF, Kip https://rudkipon66.shutterfly.com/
  8. Hello all! This years Missouri Motor Tour was exceptional, and I thank all those who joined us and made it special! After the tour, we stayed at the Boots Motel last night, and had an awesome time in an awesome place! One thing happened that I wanted to bring to people’s attention. Last night while staying in Carthage we were visited by the owner of the Best Budget Inn just east of Carthage (across SR 96 from the Kel Lake Motel and the “Crapduster”, on the left side of SR 96 (Route 66) going West), Paula Farmer. She is a very nice lady, who is trying to get business for what is by all accounts a very nice motel. Apparently she gets some promotional help from Gary Turner, but the motel has not been able to draw in a lot of Route 66 travel. We drove by there today. As we had to get back to St. Louis, we were not able to see the rooms inside; however, folks that have stayed there advise that it is a nice place. From the outside, it appeared to be a nice, clean motel. There are picnic tables outside, nice benches outside the rooms, hammocks on the second floor. They have 66 flags at the entryways. Paula would like more folks to visit Carthage and all it has to offer (and it has a lot to offer!). She wants folks to stay in Carthage and hopes all motels in the Carthage area benefit. She would just like hers to be one of them. If you are looking for a place in the Carthage area to stay, include this in your options. I don’t often get sought out by the owner of a motel, so I figure there is something special about it. A place to add to your options traveling Route 66 through Carthage. For more information visit their website: http://bestbudgetinn.homestead.com/ There will be more forthcoming about the tour and our stay in Carthage at the Boots (may take a few days—have to go through a lot of pictures!). SGF, Kip
  9. Here is an article about Posey County, IN purchasing the Harmony Way Bridge outside of New Harmony, IN, In my view this is the difference between nothing happening and something happening; I am not sure it means something good is going to happen...SGF, Kip http://www.courierpress.com/news/local-news/southwest-indiana/posey-county-to-assume-ownership-of-closed-new-harmony-bridge_07503377
  10. It is an interesting story and amazing how a little bridge over the Wabash could stir up as much controversy as it did. SGF, KIp
  11. Great article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch today about the infusion of Tamales into the Mississippi Delta along Highway 61: http://www.stltoday.com/travel/hot-tamale-trail-history-culture-and-food/article_6ac19b7e-54dc-5da7-985a-b041e63fda90.html They are big down there! SGF, Kip
  12. We recently visited our niece Robin in New Harmony, IN (the golf cart capitol of Indiana, for your information). While there we came across an amazing bridge, made all the cooler by the signs on top of the bridge letting you know where you were going. I put pix of the bridge and a little history on my whatever you call it: https://rudkipon66.shutterfly.com/ cut and paste on your server and enjoy! SGF, Kip New Harmony IN is north of Evansville, IN on the banks of the Wabash River.
  13. A couple of weekends ago we took a trek up to Dubuque, IA, following the Great River Road through Iowa. Here is a pictoral Chronlogue of the trip. click on the link (or paste it into your browser), clik on pictures and videos and you will find TWO parts of pictures of our trip. Hope you enjoy it. 15. Just to let you all know, the Palace met its goal and will be purchasing their digital projectors on March 31! Thank you to all who contributed. SGF, Kip
  16. I will just say that with 6 days to go they are only about 1300 short of their goal.
  17. Hi! Another movie theatre is threatened by digital technology...this one is the Palace Theatre in Spooner WI (birthplace of my better half, Quinn Grimes). There is an effort underway to raise funds necessary to keep the theatre in business. At this point, there are only 7 days left, but they are over $57,000.00 with $60,000.00 being their goal. If anyone is interested in contributing, visit the link below (you may have to copy and paste in your browser: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/788447619/the-palace-project Thank you for your support! SGF, Kip
  18. Thanks! Next time make the cruise into Helena and go to the Delta Cultural Center...great place to learn a lot about the area. SGF, Kip
  19. On October 11, Quinn and I made our annual trek to the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR. Traveling there requires an intimate connection with US highways 61 and 49, particularly US 61, which will--aside from a few miles here and there, take you through the Delta in Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi. It is 4 lane in Mississippi but you can still take the vast amount of the original alignment all the way to Clarksdale. Here is a link to THIS years trek...push the link (or copy and paste onto your browser), then click on "pictures and videos" then clik on the blues festival batch. A great reason for a blues highway column if there ever was one! http://rudkipon66.shutterfly.com Enjoy! SGF, Kip
  20. Quinn was perusing the Riverfront Times, a popular and widely read weekly St. Louis magazine, which this week published its equally popular “Best Of St. Louis” issue. To her pleasant surprise she found that one of the honorees was the Neon Heritage Preservation Committee of the Route 66 Association of Missouri! (the Committee was designated as the Best Kept Secret in the People and Places Section—p.29. I would have sent a link but could not find one—if anyone can please post!) The Committee, comprised, in the words of the RFT, of “four windbreaker-wearing guys (Jim Thole, Esley Hamilton, Bob Gehl and David Hudson) who look as sporty and ready to drive off into the sunset as Martin Milner did in that old 1960’s TV show Route 66” were honored for their help in restoring several neon signs in the St. Louis area: Quoting From the article: “This unbeatable “Team Neon” has obtained cost share grants to relight the night from the US National Park Service’s Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program each year they have applied, beginning in 2008 with the Donut Drive-In in South St. Louis. Two other old neons in the metro area now shine again thanks to their efforts: The Luna Café in Mitchell IL and the Crestwood Bowl in Crestwood MO. (they also were instrumental in the restoration of the neon on the Munger Moss sign in Lebanon.”) A BIG SAL-UTE TO THE EFFORTS OF THE COMMITTEE AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE COMMITTEE FOR BEING PART OF THE BEST OF ST. LOUIS! SGF, Kip
  21. Here are a few pix from this years Route 66 Association of Missouri Motor Tour, themed "Rockin to the Devil, Rollin to the Saints!" It was held September 6, 7 and 8 and ran from Carthage MO to St. Clair MO. Hope you enjoy these and remember next year will be the 25th Annual Motor Tour for the Route 66 Association of Missouri. To follow the proceedings, visit the Associations website: www.missouri66.org. http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0AZM2Ldo2bt2bCSA SGF, Kip
  22. Hello: Just wanted to advise of another theatre that may be forced to close because of digital technology. It is the Melba Theatre in De Soto, MO (home of Fo Jo Studios!), which has been a lifeline for many a theatre goer for its 67 years. There is a great article about it in todays Post Dispatch: http://www.stltoday.com/entertainment/movies/efforts-under-way-to-save-historic-melba-theatre-in-de/article_a004d660-1183-558d-9e39-f404bdc95b79.html paste in your browser and see a very cool old place. 25. Quinn, Natalie and I took a little trip away from reality this weekend and we picked quite the place--the Water's Edge Motel, on the Lake of the Ozarks, in Gravois Mills, MO. I will say I have never been a huge Lake of the Ozarks fan, probably because my exposure is with the area that is innundated by outlet stores in Osage Beach. When we got to the Water's Edge, we found the exact opposite of the hustle and bustle--we found a wonderful place to stay, on a very quiet part of the Lake that you would swear was not part of the largest, busiest lake in Missouri. We checked in, we swam, we bar-b-cued, Natalie almost learned how to play Badmitton...and you just got a chance to forget about reality. Another big part of the enjoyment were "our hosts", Bob Swengorsh and Robin Norman, who have turned this place into a great place to visit. They made us feel completely welcome, and, as fellow members of the Route 66 Association of Missouri, we chewed the fat about Route 66, and about Highway 5, the blue highway that passes right by their front door. Highly recommend that you plan a trek to Gravois Mills and stay with these fine people...151 Highway 5 Gravois Mills, MO 65037; 573-372-2201; www.watersedgeotel.net SGF, Kip
