Hi Tom,

Thanks for the information on the other railroads and roads. You are right

in that the roads came after and followed the railroads as much as possible.

Both forms of transportation were of equal importance to our country. Hard

to be a road buff and not have a love for railroads as well.

As a railroad buff, I'm very familiar with what US routes follow what

railroads. I'm sure the railroad came first, and it was easier to put the

road in an

existing corridor rather than build a new one. For example:

Great Northern: US 2

Burlington: US 34

Rock Island: US 54

C&NW/Union Pacific: US 30

Milwaukee Road: US 12

Norfolk and Western: US 460

They don't necessarily follow each other all the way. For example, 34

veers

away from the Burlington in eastern Colorado and wanders off into the

mountains. 460 gets away from the N&W west of Bluefield and sort of gets

lost in

Kentucky.

In the east, the Pennsylvania Railroad follows US 30 from Philadelphia to

Harrisburg, and again through Pittsburgh. In between, the PRR veers to the

north

for a while.

Jim,

I'm curious about the subject in general and one route in particular.

First, the general. Were the number of alignment changes (including

various City, Alt and Byp routes) on U.S. highways in St. Louis

abnormally high compared to other metros? Why so much jockeying

around? Are there resources other than old maps (which may or may not

be very accurate) which you use to research these obscure changes?

I'm personally interested in knowing more about U.S. 50's alignments.

When did it change from Manchester Road and what is now Missouri 100

to multiplexing with U.S. 66 through Pacific? Can't remember if it

was here or somewhere else, but I thought I read a reference to an

early 66 also being on Manchester before its alignment moved to

Watson Road and through Pacific. Is that accurate?

I'm also curious about U.S. 50's Mississippi River crossing changes.

What bridges in what years. I've seen various maps with various

bridges serving the main line, but don't have a good overview or time

line.

Obviously, answer as much or little of this as you want. (Same is

true for anyone else who wants to jump in.) I'm just babbling my

curiousities out loud; I don't expect to get an entire article

reprint at no charge. :)

Rick,

1934 Missouri map and 1941 AAA Tour Guide (Western

Editon) show 50 coming in on Chouteau, then

Manchester.

Official Missouri state map, 2001-2002 aligned with

the interstate.

In Wendell Trogdon's book, Lonely Is the Road, he

puts U S 50 crossing the Mississippi on I-255, then

leaving the interstate and following Lindberg Avenue

across the SW ede of the city, before merging with

I-44, heading west and leaving I-44 about 30 miles

from St. Louis. On the more recent Missouri maps I

have (1965 and 2001-2002) Machester Road is signed MO

100.

A search of other mapping sites, such as Streets and

Trips and MapQuest do not show a U S 50 designation

inside the city. My guess would be the route got

buried under the madness called Interstates.

This is a heads up for history fans. There is a program on History

Hi Mary,

Your trip sounds great. There are so many really good routes you

could take to get to Santa Fe, NM. Just stay off the Interstates if

you want to see and experience America!

You have already gotten some good suggestions from group members but

I thought I might add my "two cents" so to say. Why not stay on

Highway 50 pretty much all the way to Santa Fe? You will have to

leave HWY 50 in La Junta, Colorado and take HWY 350 to Trinidad then

I-25 over Raton Pass. The advantage of staying on HWY 50 is that you

will be passing through the small towns that provide the greatest

photo opportunities. And on the last leg of the trip you would be

following the Mountain Branch of the Old Santa Fe Trail. What better

way to get to Santa Fe from the "states" back east? Just a thought.

If you decide to try the Santa Fe Trail route let me know as I live

in La Junta and could show you some interesting historical sites in

the area. That is if our schedules coincide - I'll be doing some

work on Route 66 in Arizona the last week in April.

Good luck with you trip. Half the fun is planning it :-)

I have a feeling that your deep south and my deep south might not be quite

the same. Most folks that read bluegrass and horses in the same sentence

will likely think of Kentucky. In fact, bluegrass all by itself generally

means Kentucky. To most US residents, that's not "deep south". But,

depending on where you are in Canada, Fargo, ND, could be "south" and

Topeka, KS "deep south";-) What states are you planning to visit?

<Sigh:(> I hope they show it again. the last show was half over before I

read about it.

I took a tour bus to the Keys back whan I was in college (1967). One thing

I remember well was how they used pieces of the old rails for railings on

the bridges. My favorite place was the Bahia Honda Bridge. They simply

laid the road bridge on top of the old railroad truss.

Rick,

I think it safe to say that St. Louis did have an abnormal number of alignments.

Part of it may have to do with being on the Illinois border, meaning any changes

across the state line were apt to have an effect on the Missouri side. Most of

what I know about St. Louis came from primary research by Jim Powell.

If you will email your address to me at pathfinder66@earthlink.net I will send

you a photocopy of the article. I think it will answer most of your questions.

Regards,

Jim R.

Welcome Phaedra! As a native and lifelong resident of Tennessee, I

think I can point you toward a few nice places.

I see you are a horse lover. Well, the best place for horses is

Kentucky Horse Park, north of Lexington, KY. The state has preserved

a working horse farm and has added venues for shows and races.

http://www.kyhorsepark.com/

A little ways south of that is Renfro Valley, KY, home of the Renfro

Valley Barn Dance. In the heyday of radio, the show was broadcast

all over the south, featuring the best in country, bluegrass and

gospel. http://www.renfrovalley.com/

Closer to my neck of the woods is Rugby, TN. The town was created as

a place where landless British gentry could try their hand at building

a new life in America. The community wasn't succeessful, but they

left some neat Victorian homes and buildings.

Hope this helps!

yes yes....deep south....south....i guess i want to see more than just the deep

south. i definately want to go to kentucky, and georgia, and tennessee, and

alabama, and mississippi, and north carolina....probably not everywhere on this

trip though! i'm really open to everyone elses guidance.

Denny Gibson <denny@dennygibson.com> wrote: I have a feeling that your deep

depending on where you are in Canada, Fargo, ND, could be "south" and

Topeka, KS "deep south";-) What states are you planning to visit?

I don't even have to look at his website to tell you that Alex has a fine

knowledge of the delta...if you ever want to take a trek through a major

part of american music history--the blues--highway 61 between Memphis and

Clarksdale--with a side trip on 49 North to Helena AR, situs of the

preeminent FREE blues festival in the country (usually the 2nd weekend in

October), the Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival, and another side trip

down 49 South out of Clarksdale to Tutweiler, MS, situs of the final

resting place of Sonny Boy Williamson, and the place that WC Handy allegedly

"discovered" the blues, is a trek worth taking...and Clarksdale MS has so

much to offer (and some of the finest people you will ever meet) as

well...enjoy the ride and have some grits and country cured ham on the way!

And don't forget the snack of choice, RC Cola and Moon Pie! Tsingtao Kip

One more way off thing...if you want to go as far south as you can get (and

especially in light of the "Overseas Highway" posts) US 1 from Miami to Key

West is one of the most spectacular blue highway drives imaginable, and Key

West (especially off tourist season) is one of the neatest places in the

world! Tsingtao Kip

Make use of Kinko's stores in Tulsa or Oklahoma City, Pat.

Real easy to use their self serve computers in most

places...put a credit card in the server next to the

monitor and double click on IE on the desktop. I used to

work for that company....they paid me poorly, but I'd still

use their services. Also, you'd be surprised how many

truck stops have internet kiosks....not as easy to use

though. Keys often stick and the track balls are awful on

most kiosks.

Have a good trip. No doubt this "secret" operation will

involve road and/or Corvair photos and admiration. I'm just

guessing.... lol.

Hi Jim and all...

When I was a kid, my folks would toss my sis and me into the back of

their Ford Country-Squire station wagon and drag the family across

the US from New Mexico over to Pennsylvania, New Jersey (to visit

grandparents and aunts, uncles, cousins), then over to Montana (to

visit friends) and then back down to New Mexico....

So... in the days before too many Interstates, we'd see things like

the giant Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox in Bimidji, MN; the Black

Hills in the Dakotas; lots of "Mystery Spots"; Stuckey's Running

Indian "rest-stops"; Howard Johnson's; and so on.

I remember staying at a strange motel before flying overseas--it was

on the El Camino Real in Milbrae, CA (what's sort of the 101 freeway

now)... This motel was done up in the "traditional Spanish Colonial

Style"--with the adobe-look and red-tile roof... it had a *raised

swimming pool*... and if one took the stairway with the neon sign

advertising a restaurant down below, you'd come across a restaurant

designed to look like a Spanish Galleon's interior... with all the

nautical-style fixtures... The restaurant and bar had a large window

across from the bar that looked into the swimming pool... so you

could see the swimmers just messing around and some folks doing

the "aquatic ballet" stuff.

That pool made an impression on me as a kid... I still remember

eating my cheeseburger and watching the underwater antics of the

folks in the pool.

Ah... to be on the *road* again!

Guest rwarn17588

-- The Coliseum Ballroom in Benld, Ill., is for sale. It can be yours

for $210,000.

-- State Farm Insurance has become a big sponsor for the "Cars" movie.

Its Web site includes a "coming soon" link to "Cruisin' Route 66."
