Guest dona Posted May 6, 2003 Report Share Posted May 6, 2003 Mike, I belong to a couple of other groups and lurk on a couple. I am a Moderator on one. They have all been hit as well. I also go to several newsgroups that are on 4 different servers. They are all getting hit. It is not just this group not is it just Yahoo. In some cases, the Moderator may just be catching them and getting the messages deleted before most of the members get them. We had one post at 4 AM yesterday and as luck would have it, I was up early and caught it before anyone else saw it. The ones that are going around now, are joining, posting then disappearing. Like Bob said, if the list was moderator approved, that might cut down some, but there are still those that are willing to wait on approval, then post and disappear. Their addresses are usually bogus, so they don't care if anyone knows they are there. Schools out and the kiddies are all online playing. One of the things they are going for is harvesting valid e-mail addresses. Do an online search for "Mail Brokers" or "E-mail brokers". Selling addresses is big business. Once I get back from a little Route 66 trip this weekend (starting tonight @ 5pm!), I'm going to look into seeing what I can do to tighten the belt a little more. I may resort to automatically banning anyone with a blatant pornographic e-mail address....whether they post or not. But I may look into what Bob Worley mentioned yesterday. We'll see. I won't have computer access this weekend, so I won't be able to get to my "remove" or "ban" buttons until Sunday night. So you all behave! This morning early, another lady from days gone by on Route 66 passed away. She would have been 90 on this coming Halloween. She was born on a farm in Kentucky. Moved to St. Louis with her sister.. they worked in a curtain factory. In fact, her sister was one of the early ones that got a social security card, (at least that is what she told me). Jessie married Pete in 1939. Pete was from Webb city, another city of the highway. She never could say what year they moved to Devil's Elbow and ran the Munger Moss Sandwich place and specialized in barbecue, but she did say " The day they opened the Hooker cut off, business died." The moved here to east of Lebanon in 1945. There was a restaurant and filling station here. Restaurant was called Chicken Shanty. In the spring of 1946 they opened Munger Moss Motor Court. Rooms rented for $3.00 a night. Floors were cement and included a bed, chair, and dresser. No air conditioners, or tv's. This lady worked hard... in the restaurant, in the motor court.... told me once that at the end of the day, she had gathered up the money, gone to the house on the grounds, was counting the money, and fell asleep. Next morning, a worker came by to wake her and found her with all the money scattered around, and for a while was scared that something had happened because it was all over the place. Also told the tale of ordering meat from salesman, and then it would come in on the train, and they would have to go down to the depot to pick it up. For the period after the war, it was hard to obtain sugar, toilet paper, and some other necessities. Think too, that she had a genuine love for the road, and for Munger Moss. We met Jessie and Pete in 1971. Munger Moss was 25 years old at that time. She lived behind the motel all these years except for the past 2 and half years. So she still claimed her part of the hill. Would daily stop in and check on what was going on. The first couple of Association car tours, she was out here and enjoying it. Jessie and Pete spent the first summer showing us the ropes and working with us. Pete was like a father to Bob. He passed away in 1974 from throat cancer. Jessie was featured in a documentary film made of Route 66 back in the 80's, I think... I know it was filmed in the restaurant before the big dining room was converted to a lounge. This crew was from Minnesota, and I did get a copy, but it is not real clear any more. She always could talk about Munger Moss and the highway. She knew every trooper on the road... said once that a small fire broke out at the station, called the fire department, and was told sorry, they couldn't come because they were outside the city limits. That didn't stop her, she called her buddy, the highway patrolman, and the fire department was here very shortly thereafter, and the patrolman was here stopping traffic. Pete and Jessie adopted a daughter named Kathy. She has spent each day at her mother's side in the care center. Jessie ended up going there after she fell on ice and broke her hip. Her sister Della passed away a year ago January. They both had been in the care center. Della worked at Munger Moss as clerk for a good many years, and spent couple of years with Bob and I in the motel. Memorial services will be this Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 at the Homan Howe Funeral Home here in Lebanon, Mo. Anyone who would like to send a card to Kathy Hudson can send it to her in care of 1336 E. Route 66, Lebanon, MO 65536... My regards to a grand lady......... Rest in Peace. Would like a recommendation of a good place to spend the night on Route 66 around Pacific/Eureka area. On Saturday, we will connect with US 61 to Cape Girardeau. From there we will take state road's to connect with US 51. Will also travel on part of US 62, 68 and finally on the Dixie Highway to Cave City. For our return leg, we will continue on US 31 to Louisville returning to US 50 West via US 150. We will be staying in the Cave City area Sunday and visiting Mammoth Cave National Park. Guest brownwho63 Posted May 8, 2003 Report Share Posted May 8, 2003 We've never stayed at the Gardenway either but Tombstone, Duck, Jackrabbit, and Red Hare spent their first (and last) night there a couple of years ago prior to the Halloween Cruise. Said they would not recommend the place. A really first-class place to stay in that area is the Six Flags Ramada Inn, a former dairy barn with part of the original interior walls preserved. Other good stops in the area include the Meramec Caverns Motel just south of Stanton and the Budget in St. Clair. Guest Ted Bachman Posted May 8, 2003 Report Share Posted May 8, 2003 My wife & I are leaving early Thursday for a 1 1/2 week road trip, driving from Chicagoland to Denver via the LHA (including the rejected route from Big Springs, Nebraska down to Denver). Our return will be via the Pikes Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway corridor (basically U.S. 36) from Colorado Springs back to Central Illinois, then home. I've marked (guessed) the old PPOO alignment on the various Delorme state maps, based on a 1926 PPOO guide, and will drive as much of it as time (& my wife) will allow. (She already told me no dirt roads.) Does anyone know of any "must see" roadie locations along the PPOO? We've driven the LHA before but have not found huge amounts of information on the PPOO. Our kids adored the sunken playground area in the center. Also saw the big baseball bat at Louisville Slugger and the goose in Hazard. We made the trip to do research for "Roadside Giants," a book for older kids about larger-than-life signs and buildings. Hope it can be one more way to interest kids in history, especially of roads and travel. Also filmed a brief segment there for a roadside-themed PBS show next summer. There are some neat old businesses around Cave City, including motels with working neon along US 31W. Guntown Mountain amusement park sounded fun but was a disappointment, pretty run down. Also took US 25 (also Dixie Hwy), 23 ("Country Music Highway"), 60, and 50 on the way back to Pittsburgh. A controversial name change we came across was the Daniel Boone Parkway - it was renamed for Congressman Hal Rogers in June when tolls were removed. Boone descendants aren't too happy. Across the road is the Gardenway; it is an old 66 hotel, but don't know what the accomodations are like. About 2 miles SW of there on old 66 is the Tri County Truck Stop, which is about as good a breakfast nook as you will find on the highway...if you are looking for a food/drink stop on 61...about 10 miles so of Cape there is a town called New Hamburg (which is on a farm to market road a mile off 61.) In New Hamburg is a place called Schindlers which apparently serve the best bologna burgers in the world...cute little town/neat little place...have a great trip! Tsingtao. I collect PPOO ephemera, but never drove it, or took the time out to map the old alignment details. I took a similar trip a few years back - I drove US 24 from SE Michigan to Manitou Springs to go to the Society for Commercial Archeology National Conference in Manitou Springs. The Colorado / Manitou Springs area is the ultimate tourist trap - be sure to take the cog train up Pikes Peak (don't drive it first as funny things can happen at 14,000+ feet), Garden of the Gods, Santa's Village, and perhaps 60 or more vintage cabin camps and motels lovingly maintained by their new Polish and Russian emigre owners. The conference was headquarted at the Rainbow Lodge. I couldn't get a room there as it was booked solid, so I stayed a few places down at the formerly named Okla-Tex Court - the first place in the area to have indoor plumbing. Make sure you drive the whole way E - W through towns on Old 24 - Colorado Ave. and N - S on Old 85 - Nevada Ave. and bring lots of film. If you are taking US 24 back part ways be sure to stop at the Genoa Tower in Genoa, CO - a great old tourist trap tower - see six states! http://ican.editthispage.com/genoatower/ It used to front right on US 24 but it is long gone and now backs on I-70. Also, before I forget, when you leave Big Springs, NE the first town into CO is Julesburg. The barber in town is located in the old Ford Garage - which he has turned into a mini-museum with cars, Oregon Trail, Lincoln Highway and Julesburg memorabilia. He's only open a few days a week when he cuts hair - ask anybody on the street where it's at. Navigator and I cruised out to Shady Jack's in Villa Ridge this morning and dropped off a set of Caddy wheel covers, a leather coat, and a Levi jacket complete with a Busch logo and a KSHE Real Rock Radio patch for his March of Dimes auction next weekend. Left Jack's and headed to Alton and up the river road to Grafton and the Loading Dock. Live music and a food line about a mile long. Had a few brews and listened to the band before heading back south to Piasa and the biker bar (forget the name) there. There must have been hundreds of bikes there, as well as two clubs selling stuff -- the Outlaws from Peoria and the Hell's Angels from "Hellinois." Ain't life grand? In the next few days, her office is going to do an assessment of the Boots Motel's viability for the National Register of Historic Places, then will pass along that data to the current or future owners of the Boots. However, she needs something I don't have. This is where a few members of the list might contribute. We'll have to meet up in Oatman for some brewski's, maybe do a little exploring near/around Cool Springs! I love that stuff! I can point out where on the 4th of July last year a car went off the cliff (driver was drinking of course) where Jackie (Oatman resident and faithful 66er) and I drove out to after to see the damage. The car was still way down there attempting to be towed out by a long cable cord, all 4 tires bent under the belly of the car like a MatchBox toy, with the car completely flipped upside down. I still am amazed the guy lived. Too bad Mr. Turm-m-m-m-el couldn't join us! Although he'll be out here soon enough, I'm sure! I live in Bullhead City (13 miles away) so it's just down the road for me. I've been wanting to get to the Oatman Hotel to have a few spirits, because I haven't been in there in a while. We usually go to Judy's for that, but nothing beats that "Oatie" atmosphere at the Hotel. Sounds kinda cheesy.....but I've always wanted to take that stretch of road late at night, thought it would be really cool. Well we finally did one night a few months back coming back from Kingman......with the scenery (especially in the moonlight) and desolation, you'd think you were on Mars. Not passing one car, not coming across any form of civilization! Even Oatman late at night looks deserted, when in reality everyone is just up behind the Main Street sleeping in their homes. Such a beautiful and unique place......my favorite place to be. (Aside from the newly discovered Havasu Falls) Not to mention, we went up to Sitgreaves Pass a few months back at 2:00 a.m. to catch one of the metor showers, and it was a tad cloudy, but it was still awesome. Then we heard some heavy rustling up on the hill at Sitgreaves and it scared the crap out of me, so we took off pretty quickly. I was a little disappointed that I get so creeped out up there in those Black Mountains, but geez, if you ever wanted to get away with the "perfect crime", and never to be heard of or found again........those parts of the woods would be the absolute perfect spot! It was probably just a little burro, but at 2:00 in the morning, I wasn't taking any chances. Too many scary movies as a kid I guess. Hope to see you on the road (or in Oatman!) In 1999, it was my indecision about stopping at this very building that was partly the cause of what I've called "falling into a canyon". I had to finish the west bound trip in a rental and without actually getting to Oatman. This past June I stopped (carefully!) and realized that someone had been quite busy even though no one was there. I left a note and hoped I might hear something about the reconstruction. Your message was the first I've heard that work continues and the having a name lead me to a little history about the place. Everything on that list is something I (dave, again) enjoy and endorse. she also wrote: *Everyone's* stories, including yours, about their road trips are welcome, whether they are eloquently written, or in travelogue format, or whatever. If you don't like talk about the roadside, diners or motels, that's OK. No list or discussion is going to appeal to everyone, and you can choose to read only certain posts which are of interest to you. However, that doesn't mean that people shouldn't post about what they enjoy about road trips and I don't want any posts to be discouraged. well said, we don't want any posts to be discouraged okay here's the deal from where I (dave) see it... I love the roadside as much or more as any of you but for me the idea is to GO and the roadside is the part of the trip where you pull over and stop for awhile, sure we need nutrition and gas and proper rest but LETS GO!!! Example: Former US 99 between FIfe and Federal Way, the obvious landmark is the Daffodil Motel neon sign, kind of a floral version of the Holiday Inn sign. You can view the sign online via posts and you can buy a book that has a close-up of the sign and I can tell you a juicy story about the Daffodil Motel BUT Where do we read about what it is like to drive down Old 99 in the night, down a long tangent towards a radius and a vertical curve over the county line watching the Daffodil Motel sign approach and pass by, another mystery in the dark? What I am suggesting is to get off of your (semi-) collective roadside butts and DRIVE.... down in flames again, dave PS there is nothing like seeing a bunch of lit-up semis going the other way on I-5 in the night, around the big curve not far from the Daffodil Motel...
