Our part of Missouri was absolutely beautiful this weekend and, of

course, we tried to take advantage of it. Fired up 'Lil Red

Saturday and T-topped west on 66 to check out a place south of

Leasburg, Ozark Outdoors Riverfront Resort, that had been

recommended to us. It's on the Meramec River, one of our favorite

bodies of water. What a beautiful spot! We made a reservation for

a couple of days this week and can hardly wait.

Stopped at the Town Tavern in Bourbon on the return trip to soak up

some "localism" and to check out the new owners' beer garden. Also

stopped at our favorite place on Missouri 66, Meramec Caverns, and

enjoyed a small campfire overlooking the river. We keep returning

to this place and never grow tired of it.

Met Jane near Villa Ridge on the return trip but she didn't

recognize us and just kept going. (Phoned her Sunday to give her a

proper tongue lashing.) Sunday found us just enjoying the beautiful

weather from our new deck, doing some driveway tailgating, and

suffering through the Cards-Astros game (and already dreading

tonight's Rams-Colts outcome - - sigh)....Bliss

I 'm from knoxville, Tn and thats great news to hear about US 25E!

From the Citizen Tribune, Morristown?, TN - 10/28/04

Grant to fund a study of 25E

Ray Snader, Tribune Correspondent

U.S. Congressman Bill Jenkins (R-TN) announced

Wednesday initial funding for improvements to

U.S. Highway 25E has been approved.

Jenkins said the U.S. Department of Transportation has approved

the use of $120,000 for the development of a corridor management

plan for the U.S. 25E corridor stretching from the Kentucky state

line at Cumberland Gap to the intersection of U.S.25/70 in Newport.

The U.S. 25E Byway Committee, a group seeking to have 25E

become a National Scenic Byway, will develop a plan to identify the

intrinsic qualities of the corridor and "how they can be developed,

promoted and protected for the enjoyment of the traveling public,

and to increase tourism related travel in the region," Jenkins said.

According to the congressman, corridor management plans are the

central tool used by byway leaders to organize activities,

investments and planning goals for the communities and partners

supporting the byway.

Highway 25E is part of the Dixie Highway, the first federal road to

make a north-south connection in the United States. A portion of

the highway also follows the historic Daniel Boone Wilderness

Trail through Cumberland Gap.

Right on, Bro! Just returned from a '66 cruise to CA from St.

Louis. Paid just over $2 per gallon here and up to $3.25 in CA

for "high octane" (minimum of 91 octane required) gas required by

our supercharged Monte Carlo. Don't care -- just kept on truckin'

and payin' the price. The big Chevy averaged over 27 m.p.g. on the

trip that included many, many miles of 75 and 85 m.p.h. in AZ, NM,

TX, and OK. Smoked several "ugly road" wannabe hot rods and would

gladly pay the price again for such awesome fun. God bless Route 66

and Chevrolet.....Bliss

mile trip then you'll use 150 gallons of gas. At $1.50 a gallon

that's $225; at $2.00 a gallon that's $300. When you consider what

we all usually end up spending on a 3000 mile trip an additional $75

isn't all that much. A few less margaritas over the course of a

trip would make the difference.

At least you didn't say "Stopped at the Town Tavern to soak up some Bourbon and

T-topped west on 66..." I love creative cut-and-pasting to create messages

having no relation to what was actually said. I also wish the powers that be

would give me a day off to enjoy some foliage other than that outside my

classroom window.

Please drive carefully. :-P

Nice pics. I always liked the scenery around eastern Tennessee...it

reminds me of the Ouachitas. A small correction on the Packard in

the Antique Cars folder. The 1949 Packard was still the "pregnant

elephant" body style...here's a snap of a 49:

The car in your photo is somewhere between a 1952 and a 1954. I

used to know a guy who had a 1951, which was very similar except for

the large cormorant hood ornament on the 51 model...the last year

for the Packard icon:

By the way, the Merc coupe on page 3 is a 1951 model.

That looks like a Marsh arch bridge. I had no idea there were any

in Tennessee. Most Marsh bridges are in Kansas, but the coolest one

I know of is in Cotter, Arkansas:

> AS WINNER OF THE

> SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AWARD FOR PRESERVATION

>

> In our last e-newsletter you read about the nominees for the

> SUSTY for Preservation. This award is given annually to a

> person, company, or institution that supports preservation or

> restoration of historic or culturally significant entities. The

> recipient must demonstrate a clear connection between their

> endeavors and tourism. There were three nominees for the

> SUSTY--one of them was Hampton Hotels' Save-A-Landmark

> Program. For those of you that voted, you made a difference!

> Hampton Hotels' Save-A-Landmark Program won the SUSTY for

> Preservation award! You've read about their projects in

> AMERICAN ROAD. To date, they have refurbished 19 landmarks

> in North America spending almost $1 million.

>

> One of Hampton's notable projects included refurbishing a

> larger-than-life Santa! The World's Largest Santa Claus

> (standing 48-feet-tall and

> 33-feet-wide) was originally built for the 1962 Seattle World's

> Fair and was relocated next to the world famous Santa Claus

> House in North Pole, Alaska. Hampton reports that "giving Santa

> a makeover in the St. Nick of Time - December 2000 - was no

> small feat." Restoring the statue required building a nearly 60-

> foot-high tent around the figure, heating it to nearly 50

degrees in

> below zero temperatures (paint doesn't stick in cold weather

> conditions) and using 10 gallons of red, 5 of white and 3

gallons

> of black paint."

> So, a hearty "Ho-ho-ho and way to go!" to Hampton from

Hi gang. After doing a routine review of the American Road Yahoo

Group, I've noticed our Photos Section is at 89% capacity. Basically,

we're running out of space! If you could, please check to see if

you've got any photos on there that can be deleted or possibly moved

to the Files Section. For those of you that receive these messages

via e-mail, the link to the webpage is:

Hi Bob,

I have recently become involved in Geocaching, so I spend a bit of time on

the www.geocaching.com website. They have a link to http://gpsinformation.net/

which has just about all the GPS info you could ever want (maybe TOO much!)

but it's a good start. Some of the links are recommendations by other

geocachers, so they're first-hand opinions. I recently was given a nice little

hand

held GPS, but it's not here with me and I can't remember who made it. I'll

let you know when I retrieve it from Afton. Have fun ... and Happy New Year!

Sam got us through our son's diaper years, put new sneakers

on our car and pickup truck and furnished part of our house.

They have a nice deal for uploading digital pictures and picking

up prints at your local store. But a new BJ's has been built closer

to home and I'm a convert. Prices are comparable and the BJ's

is in the new megalomart across from our imfamous (soon to

reopen) anthrax post office!

"Cashed a microwaved paycheck and I still have some junkmail

in a little biohazard baggie". . . . Chris

While attending the Nevada Governor's Conference on Tourism I learned

of a new project promoting travel on U.S. 95 from Indian Springs in the

South to Lovelock in the North and all points in between. This stretch

of highway covers 9 counties in Nevada and takes in Death Valley in

California. This area has a wild and well preserved history that

remains largely untouched because much of the lands are U.S. Forest

Service and BLM. Go to www.nevadasilvertrails.com for a map and list

of communities along the Trail and then visit the area to "COME ALIVE

ON 95".

I'm glad to hear that the El Vado just might still be there

this fall as we have not yet made it to Albuquerque on out Rt 66

jaunts but will at that time.

I always hate to see where a site has been but no longer exists.

Howdy Road Warriors,

I got a some cool books for Christmas - one being "More Ghost Towns of Texas

(Baker)" and now I got an itch for some ROAD TRIPS! I've always been

satisfied using my big ol' Texas road atlas, but I thought I might extend my

toolset with a GPS, so...

I would like to get some recommendations from the experts out there on a good

handheld GPS unit. I'm pretty much a neophyte when I comes to GPS. I went

to Fry's Eletronics at lunch and got overwhelmed with the choices. Nobody

there was any help either (i.e. greasy-headed pimple-faced high school kids

wearing white shirts and neckties that don't fit or stay tucked in....)

Anyway, I don't need many features -- just maybe longitude and latitude,

compass, and a real-time "you are here" map with streets, etc. Also, I'd

like to stay under $300. The Magellan 300 sort of fits that category.

thanks in advance for any help!

When pictures are uploaded, three copies are actually produced. One is the

small (90 pixels wide) thumbnail, one is the larger (400 pixel wide) Screen

Size, and the third is the original full size file. The first two are all

that the general membership can see. The full size file can only be viewed

by the original poster. There are hints that this can be used for ordering

prints but I haven't been able to find out how. So that full size copy is

pretty useless and that's where a lot of space is consumed. I'm pretty sure

that tremendous savings would be seen if we just deleted these full size

files. Instructions, from Yahoo help, are:

"You can still delete the larger version, if you choose, by clicking the

"Full Size" link on the sharing version page to see the full-size version.

On the full-size version page, click the "Delete full size only" link and

the full-size image will be deleted."

Only the original poster or the group administrator can do that.

As for moving photos to the Files Section, that would only be a temporary

solution, at best. The size of both sections is limited (photos = 30MB,

files 20MB) so it would also fill up soon enough.

Aside from deleting the essentially useless full size copies, the real

solution is for all members to be good citizens in their use of this shared

space. Only post goodies that are of interest to the group and delete items

when appropriate.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Thanks Denny! I got an email from list member Chris earlier this

morning with the same message. So I spent the better part of my lunch

hour deleting those full size images. Still have a few to do, but I

shaved off about 6MB to 68% capacity. So we've got some new breathing

room. Some of those images were in excess of 400kb! I was a little

puzzled as to the warning I got from Yahoo about nearing capacity,

since we didn't seem to have a great number of pictures posted. Live

& learn!

That is a nice looking motel...too few of these still

exist.

Congrats to the people who helped preserve it. And

geez...how many motels will give a double room for under 60

bucks these days? Not many.

Sorry to all. To make it up, I'll post a few more pictures in

I only have experience with one GPS unit so I'm hardly qualified to offer

advice on the various makes and models. But I'll pass along my experience

for what it's worth. I have a Garmin III Plus that I bought in 1999. This is

the prism shaped unit that has evolved into the Garmin GPS V Deluxe. There

are smaller and more "pocketable" units but I use this almost exclusively in

a car and didn't find it all that awkward the few times I've used it on foot

or bike. The high contrast screen is readable even in some pretty fierce sun

light. The resident map covers the entire US but is limited to major roads.

More detailed maps with secondary roads can be downloaded from a computer.

My unit does not include point to point routing but it appears that the

current version does. One of the few complaints I've had is the 1.3MB of

loadable memory which is often too small to hold all the maps covering a

days drive. The current model has 19MB so this is probably no longer a

problem. Even with these improvements, the current product costs less than

my five year old unit did and it includes a 12 volt adapter and a CD of

downloadable maps. Both of these were overpriced add-ons in 1999. The fact

that it is still going strong after five years of fairly heavy use speaks

well of Garmin. List price is about $320 but it can be found for under $300.

Please consider this something like a review of the product and not a

recommendation. There may be better and lower priced units that fit your

requirements better.

Hi Russell!

When do you think that you'll be in OKC? Are you lodging here in OKC,

is so where? If scheduling works out, we could meet in Arcadia at the

Round Barn. Have breakfast buffet at Hillbillie's across the street

from the barn. Of course, JR just lives a couple miles away. :)

Where's your final destination?

A lot of museums and places are closed on Sunday's. Also, a decent

snow storm is scheduled to hit then. It's 7 degress with the wind

chill right now, so be prepared. Head out early, or even earlier.

Best to make your 66 stops while you're heading west this time.

As Pat said, the Totem Pole Park is on 28A about 3 1/2 miles east of

66 on the south side of the road.

Melissa knows a great authentic Thai restaurant not far from here.

YUM! Good BBQ at Up in Smoke in Galena, KS! Great locomotive photo op

there too! Great souvenirs at the Seaba Station in Warwick, OK.

Keep me posted. Hope we can hook up. Here's my number: 405-737-3739

God Bless. Safe Travels.

Guest John Wm. Ridge

Scott,

I would like to suggest that you consider the Yellowstone Trail, "A Good

Road from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound," as at least a significant part of

your road trip. That was one of a very few important named transcontinental

highways beginning before route numbers were implemented. See

www.yellowstonetrail.org to get the basics and then do contact us for ideas.

While we have been researching and writing about the YT for several years

and we have the route quite well identified there is a great deal of

exploring and discovery to be done. It is just beginning to be

"rediscovered" and you could help lead the way.

For instance, you might travel for a bit with the antique car owners who

will be traveling from near Seattle, Washington, to New York late in June

and back in July.

There are hundreds of miles of road following the original route, including

hundreds of miles of gravel with small towns way off the tourist track. A

great drive. And very, very little forced Interstate.

I must also mention the road to and through Stewart, British Columbia, and

Hyder, Alaska and the road along the Salmon Glacier. It is world class and

relatively undiscovered. Include side trips to Prince Rupert and Kitimat.

This area is truly unforgettable, especially if you are camping at least

part of time.

We hope to hear from you about the Yellowstone Trail.
