Guest Kathy Weiser
Hi all - Whew! It took a whole year, but I've finally got Route 66 covered, town to town all the way from Chicago to Santa Monica. The new "web within a web" covers not only the vintage icons of these many small towns and cities, but also the history predating the Mother Road. You'll also find tons of photographs, legends, ghost towns, and even a few ghosts that I bumped into along the way. I am still looking for great stories to add to the Personalities and Legends of the Road section. Come take a look if you haven't visited in a while, Thanks, Kathy http://www.legendsofamerica.com/66-Mainpage.html

Guest Dick Bublitz
Becky - You told us you had a remarkably beautiful cover photo from Oregon. I just viewed the shot on the web and it is a tempting invitation to find that spot and negotiate those curves! The rest of the pics from inside the issue look equally exciting...hard to decide which direction around the country to head for next. Only the lead truck of the leading cab car derailed. Somis is 20 miles east of Ventura. Seventeen of the 18 passengers and crewmembers on board were treated for minor injuries, and one passenger was hospitalized, said Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham. Two people in the cab of the dump truck were hospitalized with serious injuries, according to Joe Luna, spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department. The train was in “push” mode, that is, the locomotive was at the rear of the train pushing the cars. The Coast Line, formerly part of the Southern Pacific, links the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas. CN freight train derails on former BC Rail line PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Nine cars of a 144-car Canadian National freight train derailed 25 miles south of Whistler about 7:15 a.m. Friday, the railroad said. The site is on the former BC Rail Squamish Division in the area of the Cheakamus River. One of the derailed cars, a tank car loaded with sodium hydroxide, went down an embankment and was reported to be leaking. The remaining eight cars were empty center-beam lumber cars. According to a Canadian Press story in the Edmonton (Alberta) Sun, local health officials issued an advisory to residents to avoid the river, where dead fish have floated near the banks. Despite the tank car leak, however, a B.C. Environment Ministry official said tests showed the pH balance of the river had already begun returning to normal. Sabotage suspected in Utah trestle fire; FBI investigating HELPER, Utah - The Federal Bureau of Investigation is examining an alleged "sabotage" fire set July 24 on the Utah Railway’s Gordon Creek Bridge as an act of terrorism, according to a story in the Provo (Utah) Daily Herald. The bridge is 9 miles southwest of Helper. The locomotive crew stopped prior to crossing the bridge with their train after spotting the fire. "They were approaching the bridge; they saw some smoke ahead, and based on the area, they used their better judgment to slow down and investigate it," said FBI Special Agent Brent Robbins. "The train, had it gone over, might have actually broken through the bridge." The crew found a smoldering fire, which caused an estimated $4,000 in damage. Ties on the bridge were burned through, and the state fire marshal believes an accelerant was used on the fire. Robbins said there's nothing near the bridge of a sensitive nature, but the agency must still investigate the fire as possible terrorism. "Nobody has made any claims," Robbins said. "We're not sure if it was some kids goofing around, or somebody who had a grudge against the railway or the coal mines, which the railway services." The Utah Railway is offering a $2,500 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Protesters block CN main line after canceled meeting WABAMUN, Alta. – Dozens of protesters blocked a Canadian National main line Friday to express their anger at what they called the company's poor response to a freight-train derailment and oil spill on the lake near where they live, according to a story from the Canadian Press published in the Calgary (Alberta) Herald. Residents of Wabamun, 40 miles west of Edmonton, said CN failed to show up to a scheduled meeting to update them on efforts to clean up the spill on the lake and keep fuel oil from spreading in the water. The freight train derailed 43 of its 140 cars on August 3. Some of the cars contained Bunker C fuel oil, used in liquid asphalt and to power barges and ships. Fifteen of the tank cars, as well as a tank car loaded with lubricating oil, began leaking into the lake. “There's an army of CN vehicles here with equipment to fix their track, and yet we're fending on our own here,'' said cabin owner Don Goss. “The trains are rolling and there's virtually nothing happening as far as cleanup. They're telling us there is, but we're not seeing it.'' The provincial government said it would issue an environmental protection order to force CN to take certain steps as part of the cleanup within a certain time frame. Government spokesman Robert Moyles said CN's cleanup of Lake Wabamun's shoreline and efforts to contain the oil slick were continuing, but Alberta Environment was not satisfied. “They are still working to try to contain it on the lake. It's still spreading. It has breached some of the booms,'' Moyles said, adding that CN ran out of booms and was bringing more in from across North America. CN also contacted experts in San Francisco on birds affected by oil spills. Residents were still bringing in oil-slicked water birds for cleanup at the village arena. Hugh Wollis, a biologist with Alberta Fish and Wildlife, said volunteers had cleaned up several dozen birds, but had to destroy some of them. Wollis said his staff was out on the water Friday to determine what areas needed cleanup first. Most important is the shallow water around the shoreline where young fish live and birds go to find food. Wabamun Mayor Larry Burton said the village, which takes its water from the lake, is having it trucked in and has a five-day supply in its reservoir. He said he doesn't know what the long-term solution will be if tests show the lake water is unsafe. According to a story on the CTV.ca Web site, a senior CN manager in Alberta eventually came out to address the protest leaders and ask for a closed-door meeting. That meeting ended with an apology, a commitment to full disclosure of further clean-up efforts, and a central command center that would detail health risks and provide other information about the fuel oil spill. Protesters then disbanded, allowing the reopening of the railroad line. CN said waterfowl rehabilitation experts should be in the area by Friday night. EPA sues Union Pacific over Utah chemical leaks SALT LAKE CITY — The Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday filed suit against Union Pacific for the incurred costs of removing and investigating substances from a Utah site, according to a story in the Deseret News of Salt Lake City. Court documents state that hazardous substances, including lead and arsenic, leaked at the Union Pacific Eureka Mills NPL Site in Eureka. The site, about 80 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, has residential areas nearby. According to court documents, between 2001 and 2002, the EPA cleaned up 71 residential properties in Eureka. Federal officials also set up a program to voluntarily test the blood of children at risk each year. The EPA also established educational outreach programs for nearby residents and a voluntary program for "in-home soil and dust sampling." According to the newspaper, the federal government has asked that the court declare Union Pacific's liability so that company would be required to recover any further costs incurred by the cleanup. The suit did not state an exact dollar amount. Unused Illinois trestle catches fire during demolition VENICE, Ill. - A fire Friday morning damaged about 50 feet of an unused wooden railroad trestle in Venice that is in the process of being torn down, according to a story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Rich Kanzler, bridge and buildings foreman for the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis (TRRA), said workers were using a cutting torch on the rails when part of the trestle caught fire. He said no one was hurt. The trestle was one of several rail approaches to the McKinley Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River and links the Illinois suburb of Venice and St. Louis at Salisbury Street and Interstate 70. Matt Vanover, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Transportation, said the trestle is being dismantled because of safety concerns. "Some of the ties were sagging," Vanover said. He said the demolition was being done under an agreement among the TRRA, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and Venice. The trestle has been damaged by fire at least three previous times. About 1,000 feet of trestle was destroyed in a fire in 1948, and a Post-Dispatch story noted that it was the third fire there in 11 years. The bridge was built in 1910 to carry Illinois Traction System streetcars and interurban cars into St. Louis. It was named for William B. McKinley, founder and president of the electric interurban system that eventually linked Champaign, Decatur, Bloomington, Peoria, Springfield, Staunton, and other central Illinois communities with St. Louis. Streetcar service lasted until 1958, and freight trains of successor Illinois Terminal Railroad Co. continued to use the structure until 1978. IT was taken over by Norfolk Southern in 1981. McKinley Bridge was also used by automobile traffic, and wound up owned by the city of Venice. The railroad trestle portion that burned, to the east of the river bridge, passes over Illinois Route 3. The highway was closed for about 45 minutes because of the fire. UP names new general superintendent to Portland OMAHA — Union Pacific has named Todd Wimmer general superintendent – transportation services of its Portland Service Unit, the railroad said. The appointment is effective immediately. Wimmer replaces Ken Hunt who was promoted to assistant vice president – operations in Los Angeles. As general superintendent – transportation services, Wimmer, 33, is responsible for the operation of about 90 trains a day over nearly 1,500 miles of track in Washington, Oregon, northern Idaho, and northern California. Wimmer joined the railroad in 1991 in the engineering department. His last position was superintendent – transportation services in Wichita, Kans. Wimmer graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. Guest Bakerhab@aol.com
Here's the latest news from Brian McKay, he sounds chipper, and he's back on the road again. I believe that Brian will have the 'moment' that he refers to. His journey so far has been nothing short of a miracle. Helen Date: 9/29/2004 11:08:20 AM Pacific Daylight Time From: brians1930nash@yahoo.ca To: bakerhab@aol.com Morning Helen. I am on the road again as Marie said. I am currently travelling on hwy.49 and I am in Calaveras County. The area is absolutely wonderful. The roads are busy which makes it interesting and active. The road from North Fork was a real challenge with elevations ranging from 1200 ft. to 4000 ft and narrow steep roads that are easily as dangerous as those in Oatman. The spirit of those early goldseekers pervades everything here. At some point in this area, I will be crossing paths with my Great-Great Grandfather. He came to CA in 1849 or 1850. We had a letter from him and know he made it to Sacremento so I will cross his path sometime in the next two days. I wonder if there might be a "moment" to indicate it?. For those of you that believe that "it is not an accident". Unfortunately, I broke an axle in North Fork. Marie was able to get Pat Hoole to get one from my garage parts at home in Victoria and she sent it Fed/Ex and I replaced it on monday. Fun! Highway 99 is too busy for me so I have to make my way along the side roads and #49 as best I can. It is not as much fun as "66 was but it still has its moments. Brian...... Guest Ted Bachman
THANKS to ALL who took the time to cast your preservation vote. For any who are interested but have not yet voted, there are still a couple of days left. The web address is: www.monticelloenews.com See the bottom left corner of the web page to vote. Ted ----- Original Message ----- From: Ted Bachman To: AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, September 24, 2004 2:40 PM Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Preservation Vote This is a request for any interested preservationists to log onto www.monticelloenews.com and cast your vote to "rehab and repurpose" the Old Piatt County Jail. (lower left hand corner of the web page) It will only take a moment and I thank you for your support. The jail is located in Monticello Illinois, 1 block east of the late twenties alignment of the Pikes Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway, one of the early transcontinental named highways. By that time, the PPOO had been realigned from New York to Los Angeles. The Old Piatt County Jail was built just after the Civil War (around 1867) It was in operation continuously until earlier this summer when a new jail was completed. Before it was retired, the jail was purportedly the 2nd oldest operating jail in the state of Illinois. The County Board now wants it demolished. Any preservation votes are GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! Guest Alex Burr
Kip, From a New Englander who, even tho he's not a baseball fan, is still proud of the BoSox I thank your for your kind words. As for your Cardinals, they tried - just don't forget the Red Sox "unofficial" motto; "Wait until next year!!!" Guest Denny Gibson
If I had any sense AND had been paying attention, I could have been there. This was a gorgeous weekend and I had nothing that I absolutely had to do. I did get out a bit and drove through Hueston Woods. Trees are just starting to turn and I thought about how they might look in a week or two. I figured I might try to get back to Brown County, OH, to catch the color. Two weeks ago I visited the five covered bridges there and remembering that made me think of Parke Co, IN. I knew of the many bridges there but not about the festival. I see that it extends through next weekend so I may make it yet. My weekend isn't entirely clear but I might work in a Sunday shot. --Denny > -----Original Message----- > From: Pat B.
