Yes, there are a lot of the 67b's still in use..Beebe, Newport,

Searcy and even the very small towns between Newport and Corning. And

yes, the VERY old 67 can be seen in stretches next to the railroad

and you can see ROAD CLOSED signs by the old bridges. Very cool.

And to be honest, 67 is still the fastest route between LR and St.

Louis. So many people want to take I-40 to Memphis and go up I-55 and

that is just a waste of time and visually boring. ;)

How can I forget..it is one of the very original ones. Cherokee Pass is

a great place to see when you go North...kind of an Oasis and really,

the only eating places between PB and Federicktown. Greenville is a

cute little town but nothing much there.

I believe that Roseners did rebuild..and though that is a divided

highway area, that part of 67 still has a lot of charm. The Whole

Farmington to Bonne Terre area is pretty cool.

Oh, Park Hills has the huge mounds of sand too!

"Yo",

When you signed up for our group, you signed up for every note that

shows up here. Try going to our Yahoo site and adjust your message

delivery to "No Email" or "Daily Digest". "Don't send me too many

Well, most of my archives are AUDIO tapes but in 1989 or so, I did

video tape an old FoJo sign, the Call of the Wild Museum, Ozark Trading

post and anything that looked old and "cool." I will see if I can post

That is GREAT! And yes, I hope they preserve it. Also, in Minturn, the

road splits in a very odd manner.

Yo Tim,

I agree with you about getting so many messages in your Inbox - I

don't like that either; but as my co-moderator Pat indicated, the

group is what it is - we are an active group of road warriors! But to

avoid having a flooded Inbox, I can elaborate on my co-moderator's

message.

When you go to the Yahoo Groups page and log into your account you

have a the choice to change your message delivery setting to "No e-

mail". You will no longer get e-mail, and to read messages, you will

need to read them at the Yahoo Groups website. There, you can pick

and choose which messages you want to read. That is what I do.

The other option is to have a "daily digest", which delivers a bunch

of the groups' messages in one e-mail. You get fewer messages, though

a bunch are inside that message. I don't prefer that option, but

that's just me.

So, there's two options for you....the group quieting down to reduce

the amount of messages to your Inbox is not an option! LOL

A bigger shovel will work. LOL

I try to read every msg - during my nearly 36 years of

govm't service (military and civilian) I learned how

to read msgs and filter out what I didn't want to

read. Thus I can go thru 25, 30 msgs in very little

time.

Or if things are to overwhelming, simply delete all

the ones pertaining to one group - then when you have

a moment or two, go to the group site and pick out

only those you wish to read.

Works for me - keep them cards and letters coming!!

Happy Traveling

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions. Brenda and Tyler and I went

camping last year and it was a disaster. lol The two of them love to fish..

that was the highlight of our trip. I have a muscle disorder and I cant get up

off the ground if I'm camping so we decided to put a blow up mattress in the

back of the truck and well lets just say with those tire things in our blazer

(look like big humps) the mattress (queen size) was squashed and it was VERY,

VERY uncomfortable.

The bathrooms at the place we were staying was grose. The other campers kept

walking through out campsite (Not to self: if we ever do this again dont ever

stay near the lake part where everyone has to walk through your space to get to

the water). We told ourselves we'd try again this year but we just purchased

our first home and a lot of the money we were saving for summer fun went to the

move instead.

Thats one of the reasons we were so excited that Tyler got to go with my parents

for the summer.. he gets to travel and have fun while we are hard at work moving

and getting the house together. Our little guy will be gone till the last

weekend of this month.. we are anxious for him to get home soon.

I didnt have time to read all the comments that came through my box but wanted

to at least get back with you on this one and let you know that I apprecaite

your stories.

Talk to you soon

We live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, actually Greensburg, 30 miles from Baton

Rouge.

My husband grew up traveling all over Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. His dad

worked for Chicago Bridge and Iron and they moved about every 6 weeks building

bridges, tanks, etc., that are still there today. My son lives in Destin,

Florida. He said to fill up in Mobile, Alabama because there is no gas past

Mobile right now. The best way to travel cheap is to tent. Do you tent? I

have slept in the back of a pick-up truck with a mattress in it and a camper

shell on top. Gets pretty cold in there when it is cold. A tent is actually

warmer. That is why cold drinks are in aluminum cans because they get cold so

fast (metal on pick-up truck) and tents are nylon and plastic and are warmer.

So, have you been to Amarillo and seen Palo Duro Canyon? Don't go in the

summer: too hot. Go spring or fall. Have you been to that Dinosaur Park like

Southwest of Dallas? Great! You gotta go. Walk in the dinosaur footprints

when you walk down the creek. You can really see the footprints better from

above the creek, then go down it and walk in the cool creek. The only thing is,

you can't see them good after a big rain; but you usually don't get a big rain

in July or August. But, if you go too early in the summer or spring you will

have big water so you can't see the footprints and, they won't even let you go

back by the creek or you might not obey the rules and go ahead and get in when

the water is rushing too fast. If you just get a cheapo tent, and a little

Coleman stove, a couple of water jugs, sleeping bags, lantern, flashlight, and

picnic food, you can afford to take a trip. The big expense will be gas. State

and federal parks will cost sometimes as low as $6-$12

dollars per night. We even stopped and got out the Coleman to grill cheese

sandwiches and make coffee on the side of the road for lunch. McDonalds and

Burger King and restaurants can run up the money for a trip. Eggs, bacon and

biscuits on the Coleman are wonderful. What you do is get a flat rock. You put

an 8" baking pan on the flat rock inside the cast iron dutch oven with the lid

on, on your Coleman or even a fire and the biscuits will bake up beautifully.

The canned biscuits will keep in your ice chest in a zip-lock bag. You don't

want the paper carton of the bisquits to get wet. Just get a couple of 1/2

gallon jugs for tea and water or Crystal Lite. That's cheaper than canned

drinks. You can brink a box of hot choc packs for the kids or if you don't

drink coffee if it's cold. You are right, the biggest expense is gas, but if

you camp in a tent in state or federal parks, cook you own food, make your own

drinks, you can afford the trip. All you really need is a gas

card. Most parks will take Visa or MasterCard. Not all of them will take AM

EX. If you get ready to go for it, I can give you plenty of meal plans to cook

on the fire or the Coleman. You can really cook anything that you eat at home.

You need as magnalite two burner griddle or a heavy griddle. That will do

pancakes, burgers, bacon, eggs, steaks, dogs, anything. Be on the look out for

a camp coffee pot: stainless steel. The Academy might have one, but sometimes

they are hard to find and you need to look for them in junk stores. The extra

water jugs are for dishwashing. You need a plastic dish tub to wash your

dishes. Once you go a couple of times, then you know what you need. Lawn

chairs, of course. Rain stuff, of course. Firestarter for building your fire.

There are probably some great places to camp within 30 miles of you, okay 50,

but that is not too far to have a great time. I know lots of people that camp

and never really go far from the house. Start gathering

up your stuff a little at a time, like citronella and bug sprays for mosquitoes

and sunscreens and hats. You might can start picking up camp stuff at garage

sales. Just make sure you have all the tent stakes and the stove works before

you leave your house. Luxury is the blow up mattresses and you need a

plug-in-the-car air compressor for those or you'll never get them blown up. I

did a lot of camp cooking with a plan ole electric skillet with a lid. That

will do a lot and big cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew is a life saver.

Love road trips.. but with gas prices where they are we arnt doing much

traveling either. My mother and father live in Florida (old people lol j/k) and

they have a camper and for the summer they took our 13 year old up to see

I'm an American who has been living in Germany for more than four

As part of the Celebrate 2004 campaign, St. Louis came up with a great idea in

River Splash, a series of concerts Thursday through Saturday nights through

August 21st. The free concerts are on the riverfront under the gateway arch. As

part of the events, the Eads Bridge is closed off and turned into a food venue;

you can have dinner on the bridge, take in a spectacular view of the river and

the city. There is a video show shot onto a wall of water coming out of the

mississippi river highlighting the best of St. Louis past and present--part of

that being Route 66 and ted drewes-- and there is a great fireworks display.

Taj Mahal, Wyclif Jean, los and Los Lobos will be playing in upcoming weeks.

The splash will conclude with a FREE concert featuring BB King and Dr. John.

Parking is not bad--even on a baseball night--and there is nothing like taking

in some great music on a beautiful night under the Arch...Quinn and I went down

last friday and had a great time! So if you are in St. Louis you might want to

check it out. You can see more about it on the website www.celebrate2004.org.

And remember, if you can't make it to St. Louis in August, you got a great

chance to see our fair city by joining the Route 66 Association of Missouri for

the 15th annual motor tour, September 10-12! Tsingtao, Kip

When I came back to get my daughter, we then travelled all over the place,

As we are walking down the road, a guy comes over and says Wendy! Heather!

We were clueless. He was a teacher from Montpelier, VT who was following the

forgive me if i'm being repetitive...

My husband & I moved East last year from Colorado, where we lived for 11 and 8

years, respectively. in 2000, we purchased a condo on the mountain in Steamboat

Springs, & we lived there until we moved last fall. In May, we went back out

there & cleaned the house out & up & are now renting it to vacationers...if any

of you find yourselves out that way, or decide you'd like to GO that way, please

consider staying at our home, it's a truly special place, we'd love to have you,

and we can give you oodles of "locals" inside scoop on what to do while you're

there. I can also probably work out a special deal during certain weeks for

members of this group. :)

Thanks!

Melanie,

I'm Matt Smallwood, and also a member of the American Road

group, and the US 40 group...so, obviously, I enjoy travel,

too. Four or five of my friends and I have rented homes in

North Carolina and West Virginia over the last five or six

years during the winter or fall. I live just south of

Philadelphia in Wilmington, DE.

I might contact you soon about renting. It looks like an

awesome place. And a home is never like a condo or

hotel.....this I know. The hardest part will be getting

everyone on a plane to fly to Colorado....heh, heh.

Bye,

Matt Smallwood

The closest you will get for now is looking at our web pages. The farm one

hi matt...we'd love to rent the house to you, please do keep us in mind (in

fact, it's just off US40, which is the "main road" through steamboat :) ). i

really do agree that it is an "awesome" place, we still consider that place

"home" (although, it is a condo). there's plenty to do there year round, and i'm

happy to answer any questions. incidentally, i have several friends from

wilmington, all of whom i worked with at glacier national park...that's a town

full of rocky mountain lovers, eh? :) i'll b eheading to wilmington next summer

for the wedding of one of these friends....a bit of small world again :)

If you find yourself on old 66 between Springfield

and Carthage (the route is now MO 96) there are

several old garages - on is in Avilla), long past

their prime and falling in, but they do show the

architecture of the times.

Coming westbound out of Springfield you'll follow MO

266 for the old alignment (West Chestnut east of I-44

- MO 266 west of 44). 266 runs into 96 just west of

Halltown.

Just to the east of Carthage, there is an old 66

alignment. It's part of Lakeshore Road.

Happy, and safe, traveling.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

Rosessner's Motel is alive and well on 67. Love to drive from St. Louis to

Cherokee Pass on 67. Rosessner's includes a wonderful restaurant with home

cooked food. They did have a fire but that was quite a while ago and the motel

is in great shape. Regular stop on my drives. Take off and do this drive about

five times a year. This is a good day trip from my house......Jane

Thats great. I dont travel as much as you do.. but you tell wonderful stories

and I like to hear them. Dentin Texas? Was that right? We are in Oklahoma

City... dont know how far that is from Dentin but I bet it isnt far.

Love road trips.. but with gas prices where they are we arnt doing much

traveling either. My mother and father live in Florida (old people lol j/k) and

they have a camper and for the summer they took our 13 year old up to see

relatives in Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan. He was pretty excited about the

road trip "in style" as he calls it with Nana and Grandpa's trailer in tow..

Talk to you soon

Got a postcard in the mail the other day from a local church

offering a vacation Bible school with the title "Ramblin' Road Trip".

I thought the card was cute (note the Bible verse in the shield:), so

I scanned it and, since it was a single image, put it in the photo

section of the newsgroup under the BabyBoomerBob folder.

BTW, is anyone having problems getting their posts to get

through? I finished my Dixie Highway writeup sunday and sent it in.

Two days later, it hasn't shown up. It's likely floating somewhere

out there in the Twilight Zone:) It's about 14K, whick I didn't think

was too long but I may be wrong. I might split it up and try again.

Happy Motoring,

I watched AmericanRoads1 last night and just now finished AmericanRoads2 and

for me. The insets of sign photos identifying the roads is a nice touch.

Is it possible that this is the only place that the famous Bremer Route 66

Sofa can be viewed online? Quite a coup there, Toshio.

Not a relative, but in 1959, on my way home from my

last Navy duty station I stopped in Memphis to see my

then 1? year old daughter.

After my visit I took the bus out to Memphis airport

for a flight to Boston. There was an older woman

sitting beside me and we got to talking. When I

mentioned I was from Kennebunk, ME, she exclaimed that

she and her family had had a summer place in

Kennebunkport in the 1920's and 1930's and did I know

the wonderful gentleman who had done their yard

maintenance - a Mr. Burr. Mr. Burr was my grandfather,

I told her, much to her amazement. It's nice when

complete strangers express such great feelings for

your relatives.

Happy traveling.

The closest you will get for now is looking at our web pages. The farm one

is in my sig line. My daughter hiked from Key West to VA, then did ME a few

years ago. I followed in the van for 6 months. Her journals and pics are

here....

The van mentioned at the bottom of the journal entries is now mine. I have a

white one and a red one ;-)
