  1. Thanks for the reply, Dave. I do have one more place that hosts pictures. Geocities, but they put ads on them. I'm still in SE Nevada, riding parts of the Silver State trails. I rode a part of a narrow gauge railroad grade that went from Pioche to Jackrabbit, a real ghost town with not much there any more expect the frame and pulleys for the mine. That would make an interesting post, but not many pictures and it was motorcycle only. You can get to Jackrabbit off hwy 93 niorth of Pioche with 2 wheel drive and see the mine and some fallen down buildings. There is a historial maker at the turnoff. Dale
  2. I posted two pictues in one thread that added up to 435k. Now any time I want to make a reply it says "Max. single upload size: 65k". That means I can never uplaod another picture. I have been using URL links and now I am out of space with my server. Dale
  3. Dave, no I am not going to follow the Lincoln Hwy in Ibapah this year. Doesn't look like much of it is old road. I may next year. Heading south for the winter, at Pioche, NV now looking at old mines. Dale
  4. Sorry to have interested in other things the last week and not checking in, I was at the Bonneville Salt Flats watching the motorcycle land speed meet. I have made up a picture of my tracks: http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwit/pics/Jakes.jpg Started on a dirt road off hwy 50, 3 miles east of Moorman's Ranch (They wont let you go through the ranch) and ending on the paved road near Ruth.
  5. This is a picture of Jakes Summit now. Quite a difference from the one that Dave posted. Tried to take it in the same place. http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwit/pics/Jakes_Summit.jpg Dale
  6. A couple of us went on about same ride today on our dirt bikes. We went through the buildings (new trailers) at Mooreman's Ranch from the west of there. A Lady came driving out in a pickup and didn't want us to go though their property. Made us ride down the pavement 3 miles to a public road and come in the way I took Sunday. We only went as far as the dike in the mining area, no sence in riding the bypass road to Ruth and come back short on gas. Dale
  7. Thanks to all of you on your nice replies. Dave, After downloading my tracks to Delorme Street Atlas I could see how the road would have gone straight across and the 4x4 section was a way to get around the mines. Thanks for the links. Here is another picture at Jakes Summit looking in the direction of your picture. Lot more trees now. http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwit/pics/LincolnHwy10.jpg Roadhound, We were able to hit the paved road a mile or less from Ruth and drive into Ely for lunch. It is a nice section to drive, other parts are wide graded roads now and don't have the feeling this part has. DennyG, Didn't want to stop and take pictures of where 4x4 was a must. For a long time I thought high clearence 2 wheel drive was you needed.
  8. After camping at Illipah Res, 40 miles east of Ely, Nevada, I dicided to take the old way to town. Started near Mooreman's Ranch and drove across Jakes Valley, nice old road looked like this: http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwit/pics/LincolnHwy1.jpg Starting into the climb the road was still good: http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwit/pics/LincolnHwy2.jpg Another picture going up hill: http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwit/pics/LincolnHwy3.jpg Saw the first making heading east since leaving new hwy 50. http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwit/pics/LincolnHwy4.jpg At about 7000' ran into the first pine trees: http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwit/pics/LincolnHwy6.jpg Not far after that, arrived at Jakes Summit: http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwit/pics/LincolnHwy8.jpg Road downhill wasn't bad, but neaded high clearance: http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwit/pics/LincolnHwy9.jpg After a nice down hill ride of 4 or 5 miles, came to mine property. The road for the next couple of miles ran on top of a dike they made. After leaving the dike the road got worse. Lucky, there were more sign here. The road had steep up and down hills, some over solid rock making 4x4 a must. The road ended near Ruth. I didn't see Reipetown or Kimberly. Don't if the last section was made after the mines dug up these town or not. Dale
  9. Thanks for the info, Dave. I just got back from a ride in Jakes Valley near Moorman's Ranch to Ruth on the 1915-1916 Lincoln Hwy. When I get URLs on the pictures I took, I'll post them and a story in a new thread in the Lincoln Hwy section of this forum.
  10. Hey Dave, I have been using Garmin MapSource 2008 and Benchmark Nevada book. Was checking out parts of Lincoln hwy east of Schellbourne to Stone House in the pickup and was all graded roads. Planning on driving to Ibapah after going to salt falts and seeing the motorcycles race. Still haven't gone between Moorman's Ranch & Ruth, Nevada. Friend was trying to find it from Ruth to Moorman's Ranch and was stopped by mining company fences. Next week we will try from Moorman's and should get over Jakes Summit. The section from Illipah west goes up a dirt road to almost Hamilton and follows another main dirt road down to the turnoff to Belmont Mill. Can't find anything about Rosevear's Ranch. Lincoln Hwy web site says the highway than went over White Pine Summit before going over Pancake Summit. You wouldn't have to pass another summit as it is flat between there??? Dale
  11. Sorry not to get back to you sooner, Dave. That picture is where I was at. Next year I can walk up the hill and take the same picture for you. I'm at Illipah Res, NV now, next week I'm planning on taking the 1913 Lincoln Highway from Moorman Ranch to Ruth, Nevada.
  12. Here is the spring with a fence around it, about 200 yard west of the other picture. That looked like a cottenwood tree to me in the other picture. I can't believe that the first picture on the other post counts on the 500k.
  13. I made a mistake (first one) I was on the north side yesterday and checked out the south side today. You can go to the springs, they are dry. Here is a picture around Plank Springs. There is a cement foundation from something later.
  14. I drove saround the south side of Stonehouse exit yesterday and didn't see much on that side odf the road. Was going to drive US 40 to Pumpernickel Valley, but the mine has a big pipe acorss the road. There was a crossing, but they had some steel plates in the way. You can US 40 from Pumpernickel Valley to the pipe, but you would have to turn anround and go back the same way. Old US 40 from Valmy west only goes for a mile or so. The pavment stops and the road turns north across the tracks to a ranch. Keep Out! West bound I-80 covers old US 40 from there to Stonehouse. I'll may look at the north side of Stonehouse today. Dave, try getting a Benchmark Nevada book, I like it beter than Delorme.
  15. There two trees north of Fresno to mark the center of hwy 99 in California. A Palm tree and Deador Ceder were in the center divide of the four lane highway. The Deador Ceder was cut down in the last couple of years and a new one been planted. Check for it as you drive by. I saw it on California's Gold a few years ago.
  16. My further research in a 1921 California - Nevada Automobile Blue Book shows that the road at that time followed (was on top of) a railroad bed between Valmy and Golconda. No railroad could have gone over Golconda Summit, and my maps show one that swings far north to skirt the hills. Thus the oldest alignment in my videos was built after 1921. ================================================================================ ==================== I was camped on Golconda Summit when I stumbed on the thead. I drove the old road over the railroad grade, some place it looks like it may have been paved at one time. Some of the places where the road bed was raised, you had to drive beside it because a narrow bridge would be out. I went from the Golconda-Mides Road to Pumpernickel Valley off ramp. There are a couple of historial placks a long the way. For a bonus, got to see a large 3 point buck deer, it ran away and jumped a fence without any effert. Dale
