  1. I think a weekend sounds about right. That gives you some time to scout around plus have some fun with the rally. Not sure about myself. I had kind of brushed it aside partly because the closest I have to a regular navigator would want to make it a day trip and I'm not all that interested in dashing to and fro. I'll give it some thought.

I'm guessing that the NR guide you mentioned might be the one from the OHS ( http://www.ohiohistory.org/about/nrtg/ ). If you don't have it, I highly recommend getting one before heading out. It's free. I believe all four of Ohio's surviving NR S-bridges are between Zanesville and Wheeling. Plus there are some brick segments and other goodies. Guerney County has their own signed tour with a guide that's usually available as a PDF here but there seems to be some problem downloading it today.

Yep, that is the guide I was refering to. Seems to be very well put together. I've had it a couple years and may be able to finally test the contents (we have not driven that section). I think I may even have the Guerney county one too, have to look when I get home. From what I've seen and read it looks like it would be a nice area for a fall drive.

  2. Denny,

Thanks for posting the link. We are contemplating driving down from MI for it. Thinking of making a weekend of it. Are you participating? I have to get out my National Road Guide and refresh my memory, but aren't most of the S-bridges etc. between Zanesville and Wheeling?

  3. Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have an Auto Trails Survey Or Clason's or similar Atlas that has a page denoting the pole markers used for the old auto trails? Like this:

For a project this winter, I'd like to paint up some full size versions to hang in my garage with my other stuff. I have been looking for one online and haven't been able to aquire one yet. If anyone has one and wouldn't mind sharing and scanning a copy I would be extremely appreciative!

    Thank You in advance,

  4. Thanks for posting the info on stitching. I just took a few pics recently and was going to look online for stitching software, nice to find links with feedback. On another note, I had to laugh, I had seen that some of you had posted about 3-D photography and Stereo Realist cameras. I have my grandfather's Stereo Realist and had been shooting with it until recently (expensive for mounting). Then I peeked at Mobilene's blog and saw his post about old Kodak cameras (another thing I have recently gotten into w/inhereited cameras). It is interesting seeing how many common interests there are here besides the roads.

  5. Thanks Dave,

That helped tremendously, was able to go back to Google and pull up the satellite view, zoom in and presto, "Old Lincoln Highway" appeared labeling the road near Jakes summit. Being a Midwesterner I haven't familiarized myself with the maps out that direction yet. I'll keep working at it, Thanks for leading the blind!

Most recently Dale has been in and around the area east and north of Ely, Nevada. I have shown it in green on the map below from Moorman’s ranch on the west to Ruth on the East, and over Jakes Summit.

He has wandered further afield, but that is the general location of the most recent postings.

I’ll answer your question about directions in a minute.

Oh, and if Dale is around today he will certainly correct my errors!

Keep the Show on the Road!

  6. Great pics, looks like it would be a fun trip, be it by 4 X 4 or by bike. Question, I am trying to find the area on Google maps (quickly as I am at work, so I may have overlooked it). What town or landmarks would I look for to locate that area? Additionally, can anyone recommend online resources for tracing the 1915 route (again I just started looking, figured I save some time by asking).

    Thanks,

  7. Dave,

The old magazines aren't easy to come by, just have to be persistent in keeping an eye out. I have an interest in the subject due a Great Uncle who built trailers and motorhomes in the 20's and 30's, even have the original patent paperwork! I am on the constant look out for anything related now. I think we are a rarity in that area of interest.

We got an old Sunbeam T-9 toaster (better $$$ than Ebay) and some other old kitchen decor items and a crate and something else for display in the garage. Ebay is both a blessing and a curse. The antique shops around here aren't really that good anymore either. We chanced upon a couple shops that had stuff in Allen MI, but there was still plenty of serious junk that had to be looked over. We've found that if you travel around, you find that different regions will have totally different items from one another. The other strange pattern we noticed is you'll see something you haven't before, than go to another store or mall and see a couple more of the same. Go back in a month or two and find none.

As far as finding road ephemera, few and far between here too. You may chance upon some 50's era, but that is the extent. Back to Ebay we go....

Oh, did you see the two Lincoln Highway signs that sold on Ebay? One of them went for $900 the other was over $700, ouch! My pockets aren't that deep.

  8. DennyG,

No problem, I knew when I posted that it would be a tough one, figured I'd ask anyways... Trip was more scenic that anticipated. Plenty of roadside architecture if you kept an eye out, Mottville has a couple of real nice old 20's-30's vintage gas stations and a nice (decommissioned) concrete arch bridge. Got a couple of deals on antiques in Allen, where there are quite few stores if that is your interest. Also stopped at the new RV History/Hall of Fame museum in Elkhart IN. They are putting together a nice collection of early campers and motorhomes if that is your interest (one of mine). I didn't realize US-12 was such an old route, auto, carriage, indian path and originally a migrartion route for Mammoths. Better than taking I-94!

Mobilene, what and where is Mt Baldy?
