Old US 40: Indy East Motel, once called the Mohawk Motor Hotel. Yet another one of the classic motels in Indy the mayor is targeting to shut down due to crime and prostitution. They keep hanging on, though. -

Old US 40: Located at Shadeland Ave. & US 40, Eastgate Mall was originally an open air mall built in 1957, anchored by JC Penney and Sears. After a newer mall was built 5 miles east in the mid-70's, Eastgate declined. It was revitalized in the early 1980's as a "consumer mall", housing several discount stores and a food court. My first job in 1986 was in the food court and this is the entrance where I went into work. Sad to see it this way, as it was a bustling place back in the mid-late 80's. It's been closed since 2004 and its future is uncertain. -

Old US 36: After turning east onto 36 (38th St.), travelers would have seen the impressive Crown Hill Cemetery, the 3rd largest non-military cemetery in the U.S. Several notables "residents" include President Benjamin Harrison, John Dillinger, Carl Fisher, poet James Whitcomb Riley, and author Booth Tarkington. -

Old US 36/52/421: Crispus Attucks High School, the alma mater of Oscar Robertson. In some circles he's considered the greatest basketball player of all time. "The Big O" led Attucks to Indiana high school basketball championships in 1955 and again in 1956 before moving on to college at the University of Cincinnati, then on to the NBA. -
