Old US 40: Located at Shadeland Ave. & US 40, Eastgate Mall was originally an open air mall built in 1957, anchored by JC Penney and Sears. After a newer mall was built 5 miles east in the mid-70's, Eastgate declined. It was revitalized in the early 1980's as a "consumer mall", housing several discount stores and a food court. My first job in 1986 was in the food court and this is the entrance where I went into work. Sad to see it this way, as it was a bustling place back in the mid-late 80's. It's been closed since 2004 and its future is uncertain.
