For all you George Reeves & Adam West fans out there, there's a new place to pay homage: Holy Artifacts, Batman!
-
I like it!! How do we get them? Pretty well covers the whole thing. --RoadDog
Well, since it appears you'll be joining us, you need not worry about the aquisition of one. I'm in the process of creating a little something for the participants.

Pat,
If you have add older version of Delorme's US Street Atlas (vers. 9 or earliers) I have an overlay file that
contains the complete Indiana routing. Let me know.

I sure don't have that. The wife is rather fond of Streets & Trips.

Bill,
They were unharmed, as they were in Lincoln when it took place. Their house was fine, and wasn't actually part of the Pig Hip. However, the Pig Hip was a total loss. I heard about 95% of the contents were destroyed...all the memorablia, pictures, you name it....gone forever. From what I hear, Ernie will still be serving up Pig Hip sandwiches in June, at the site of the Pig Hip, during the Illinois Route 66 Motor Tour.

Greetings & welcome aboard, Gus! I really enjoyed your intro in the other section. I know fellow poster Kip Welborn makes sure his 3 year old daughter Natalie experiences the same thing you're having your daughter experience. Hopefully Kip will drop by and give his thoughts.
I'd say after you leave St. Louis, about an hour up the road, make Stanton a stop:
-Meramec Caverns
-Antique Toy Museum
-Jesse James Museum
-Riverside Reptile Ranch
I know it's not far from where, I'm guessing, you'll be sleeping over in St. Louis, but Meramec Caverns also has a sizable camping facility. The Stanton Motel up at the interchange with I-44/66 is well worth the stay. I know further up on the western fringes of Joplin, there's a permanent little amusement park (at least it was the last time I was through there last year). It's kinda like one of those traveling amusement parks you see that move from shopping center parking lot to shopping center parking lot....but it doesn't move. Just curiuos, how far west are you expecting to go on this trip?

Glad to hear you'll be joining us! As of last Sunday when I reserved, Jean there said they had only 1 double and the rest were singles. However, not certain how many total they still had available. *If* by some freak of nature you call and they're all booked up, there are still some good looking motels just up the road....The Star Motel, Holiday Motel, and Caveland Motel were decent ones as I recall. I was down there just yesterday on a scouting trip of my own. Let's hope it's 85 & sunny when we're there like it was for me yesterday! For more lodging choices, here's a link to Cave City's lodging page: http://www.cavecity.com/lodging.htm
From what Denny & I have been told, the following have reserved:
-Me & Jennifer from Indy
-Denny from Cincy
-Kent & Mary Sue (code name "Bliss") from St. Looey
-Bob (code name "Baby Boomer Bob") from TN
-Fran & Dolly from Cuba, MO
If anyone knows of anyone else who has reserved or is at least planning on going and hasn't yet made a reservation, please post it here.
Thanks!

We like to think it will encourage folks to join the forum. It's a little "reward" for those who took the time to sign up with us.

Just to give everyone an update, Denny made a scouting trip to Cave City this past weekend. As of then, there were still some teepees still available, but CALL NOW if you even think you might go. Also, due to Denny's field work, he discovered what we're 99.3% sure is an old alightment of the DH. Mapquest satellite images somewhat confirm these findings. So, hats off to DG for the find we would've likely bypassed. Just a mere 5 weeks til the cruise!

Would you happen to know what "CB" stands for?
-
Glad you're coming Bob and hope Susan & Kevin can make it, too. I've heard no complaints so assume that making reservations has gone smoothly. We're not yet at risk of Wigwam overflow but I believe we have reached critical mass. I count five teepees full so far and plenty of time (and teepees) remain.
It appears the folks at the Wigwam haven't paid their domain fee, as the site is currently parked. I wonder if they even know they have a website, as this is the one previous owner Ivan John created.

Welcome, Jack! I think what you're looking for might already exist. Check out the link here, and look under the "Are back issues available?" topic. This can be found on the American Road web site.

Just wanted to add a little note on this topic. One of the folks on the trip with us that weekend was featured on a local PBS program, "Across Indiana". The film crew was along with us for part of the day on Saturday. There are even a few quick shots of my light blue coupe in the segment. Here it is: Mike McKeel

Sad news tonight out of Broadwell, IL. The Pig Hip was destroyed by fire late this afternoon: RIP Pig Hip

There's a passionate debate going on in Indianapolis pertaining to the old Michigan Road through Indianapolis. A group wants to rename a portion of it to Martin Luther King Jr Street, while other want to keep things the way they are. This is a common issue in several other cities that have also changed to MLK. The story is in the link:Michigan Road

And by the way, did you notice that one of your party was behind the tree. apparently watering the forest Tell him he was spotted.
I was wondering how long it'd take for someone to spot me back there!

Hi all....just posted some pics from a fall foliage trip we took in October into southern Indiana and Kentucky. It's in the Gallery and can be found here:

Alright, now I'm *really* ticked we got that extra 4" of snow on top of the 10" we already had on the ground last weekend. But, it looks like you had a swell time neverthenonetheless. I'm really looking forward to doing a Sweetheart Cruise, as I've heard about the legend of the Cruise for several years. Ahh, we'll see what kind of weather 2008 brings!
-
For those of you interested in going, here is the URL for the Wigwam Village. Definitely worth a look:
So far it looks like we've got five confirmed vehicles for the weekend. Hope to see YOU there too.

Just wondering, is there a Lincoln Highway guidebook out that covers Indiana? Specifically, a kind of guide that gives turn-by-turn driving instructions? I bought Brian Butko's "Greetings from the Lincoln Highway" last week, and it inspired me to explore the 1913 alignment from the IN-OH state line to South Bend. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Count my sister Dolly and I in also. Just made reservations for Friday and Saturday, and will also leave St. Louis on Friday. Looking forward to seeing all of you and having a great weekend!
Fran in Cuba, MO.
Fran, I fully expect a full cooler of hops & barley from you to keep our "spirits" high as you used to for everyone traveling Route 66 through Cuba.
As a side note for everyone attending the cruise, as Denny mentioned, I'll be following the west alignment of the DH out of Indy on that Friday. Prior to the start of it, we'll be kicking off the drive at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis where we'll pay homage to the creator of the DH, Carl Fisher. What better way to start a DH journey than to remember the gent who got the whole thing started?

We stopped at the ruins of Two Guns and photographed the Mountain Lion cages. I did a 360 degree panorama which I’ll post somewhere when I get time.
Don't forget you can post images right here on the forum. Just click here for instructions: http://americanroadmagazine.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=28

Brian,
So was the Lincoln still a good place to stay? I know it's one thing to lose a classic motel that's seen its better day, but to lose one that's still well-maintained and has good clientele is a tough one to lose.

Hi Pat and Denny,
Just talked to my sister, Dolly, and we are interested. Sounds like it would be a great trip for us and a chance to see old friends and also make new ones. Our Missouri Association meeting is being held on April 14 here in Cuba at Bob's Gasoline Alley....so we couldn't make it that weekend, but any other would be fine. Let me know of any plans you've made so far.
Fran in Cuba, MO.
Thanks Fran! We'll keep your date in mind when setting up the schedule.

Thanks for the heads up, Denny. I had not heard of this coming out, so this is a pleasant surprise. Look forward to picking it up.
Pat
P.S...and a hearty happy birthday!!
