  1. That is disturbing news about the financial situation. It's too bad they find themselves in that spot, and I sure hope they are able to figure out a way to solve it.

I wonder, though, if they might have more visitors and a bigger draw/appeal (and, thus, less of a money issue) if they had placed it along a more "nostalgic" route, such as Route 66.

  2. Remember that feature of TVs a few years back where you could watch 2 shows at the same time with what was called "picture in picture"? Well, this is not exactly the same, but I photographed non-digital pics I took circa 1988-1997. Maybe someday I'll get 'em all scanned in and placed online somewhere....

It's funny how old pictures reveal a lot about your past that you had forgotten, in terms of people and events.... Wonder where some people are today....

  5. Amongst taking pictures, snow shoveling, and a few other things done during the "Blizzard 2011 Snow Day" I had, Wednesday, February 2, 2011, I found myself watching old car ads online. It's not like I didn't have other things to do ... it was just a cool way to spend a part of the day. I noted a bunch of my favorites; the results are the links below.

At the end, I'm including a few 2011 Super Bowl commercials.... I had hoped my Dad's home-town Steelers would win, but the Green Bay Packers win includes one person that connects to the 1985 Chicago Bears, who won the 1986 Super Bowl 25 years ago ... Wayne Larrivee. Wayne was the "voice of the Bears" in that 1985 season and, 25 years later, he was the voice of the Packers for their win this year....

  8. I've posted pics of old roads (Route 66, the Lincoln Highway, etc.) and pictures of the "road ahead" from various trips and drives. But, one type of road I had not taken pictures of until December 18, 2010, is a BRAND NEW road. I'm not talking just new concrete/pavement ... I'm talking ... brand new ... as in NO pavement had been in that spot previously. For this photo shoot, the "Stearns Road Project":

    http://www.stearnsroad.com/

Stearns Road was extended from IL RT 25 to Randall Rd, providing a much-needed 4-lane bridge across the Fox River between Elgin and St Charles. The only other bridge crossing the Fox River between St Charles (IL RT 64) and Elgin (US RT 20) ... is a very small 2-lane bridge that goes through the heart of South Elgin.

    In this pic...

    http://www.stearnsroad.com/Images/support/exhibit.pdf

...the yellow line between Randall and McLean is brand new road, as is the purple line between McLean and IL RT 25.

The extended (brand new pavement) Stearns Road was opened to traffic December 16. I took my inaugural drive on it that Saturday, December 18, and snapped the following pictures.

"Who's going to pay attention to your dreams?" ... The Cars ... 'Drive'

  9. I went to an HO slot car race at a local slot car show earlier this month. I have been working with the promoter to have the slot car racing weekend at America On Wheels, and we have now set the dates so that we will have a sanctioned HO race on Saturday, July 16 and an open track with possible IROC type racing on Sunday July 17. There will be vendors both days.

That is great news, Dave! That should be a wonderful weekend at AOW. Not sure I'll be able to attend, but I'll be there in spirit.

I thought it might be fun to put a small animated display (maybe 4 feet by 3 feet) in the front window, but I don't want to spend a fortune (a couple to a few hundred, max) and I know models can run into a lot of money. Maybe what I should do is scout Ebay now that I know that something exists.

    Dave,

Yes, models can run into a lot of money. But, along with eBay, check CraigsList and such. You can (sometimes) find a great deal!

I have this layout of my HO scale train...

    http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/collection/Cort_TrainRoom_JPG.html'>http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/collection/Cort_TrainRoom_JPG.html

...but not everything is HO scale. Some cars are HotWheels/MatchBox variety ... and some buildings ... well, I'm not sure what scale they are exactly.

The reason for the "not to scaleness" of my train set up ... is because of the limited HO scale cars/trucks available. At least, it had been limited; I haven't bought anything new for the train table in YEARS, so maybe a better selection of HO scale cars/trucks now exists, but when I was buying, it was rather limited.

I enjoyed this display at the museum in Victorville CA:

Sorry you had that experience, Dave.

In all of my yearly travels, I haven't had any run-ins with bed bugs. Course, most of the time ... with the exception of my Route 66 trip in 2009 ... I spend the evenings at homes of family and friends. Still, I've seen enough hotels that I'm glad I've been lucky enough to not have the "bed bug" experience.

Oh, cool ... I, sometimes, spend too much time studying photographs like this when a business or restaurant has them up on display. I've always been fascinated by how buildings and places and towns/cities change over the years ... and what was "commonplace" in different times....
