Thanks for the response Denny!! Yes, NC is in there also. Two-lanes

would be nice for a while. We really do not have any area in mind

that is why I posted to get an idea of what is good and not worth the

time. We have approx. 7 days to go from Myrtle Beach back to

Richmond Va for our road trip. I have looked into the smokie

mountains and found the Carolina Outfitters and that looked good and

exciting especially the white water rafting. We are also going to go

to Rock City in GA/TN. We did want to see some of the country side

in KY but not sure where to go. Got any ideas?

I am not sure what you ment by (What group is this?)!

HI Patsy,

We will be going to Ashville to see The Biltmore castle, then I found

the Carolina Outfitters it looks interesting. Other than that we

have decided on going to Rock City/Chattanooga TN. We have approx. 7

day from leaving Myrtle Beach to go home near Richmond, Va. Got any

ideas? What about KY?

Thanks for any help

We drove to Asheville this spring. We took 40 from Knoxville through

the Appalachian Mountains and stopped at Hartford for lunch. There is

a neat small cafe just as you exit off of 40 next to a stream and an

outfitter. We had lunch on a deck overlooking the river and the

mountain with a dog that decided we were friends. Asheville is great

as their downtown never went through a renewal so it is full of funky

shops and places to eat. It swings at night but it is also fun during

the day. There are many places to see so if you are planning to go to

Asheville, let me know. We then returned on the Blue Ridge which is a

wonderful drive and then turned north or west on 321 to Knoxville -

the drive is just a delight.

Have a great time

I took a variation of this drive in 1996. The scenery is mostly

natural - the lake, woods, farmland - pretty slim on roadside

architecture. Most of the classic rustic cabin courts and restaurants

are farther north on the ?Circle Tour.?

If you stop in Ludington, be sure to visit Ludington State Park.

Besides the beach, tall sand dunes, and a great display of buildings

constructed by the WPA, there is a long concrete walkway/boardwalk

adjacent to the park entry drive. The walkway is unique in that

almost every inch is stamped with what appears to be a non-repeating

pattern of leaves, animal tracks, etc. ? the nature of the park.

Never seen anything like it before.

Yahoo's groups offer some very nice features including those that allow us

to share pictures and other items. But the available space is,

understandably, limited. I've often compared it to a refrigerator in a

college dorm. Obviously, sharing responsibly is important and has become

even more so with the recent increase in "room mates". It's mostly just

common sense: Only put in appropriate stuff and take out anything with a

passed expiration date.

But at least one space saving technique is not obvious at all. When looking

at a single picture, three sizes are listed. "Screen size" is what you are

looking at, "thumbnail" is the small version used for displaying multiple

pictures at once, and "Full Size" is a version that most of us can't even

see. Only the person posting the picture and the group's moderators can see

it. I believe that Yahoo keeps these large versions around so that the owner

can order prints from them. For the group, they serve no purpose. A couple

of examples show thumbnails of 1KB each, "Screen size"s of 17 & 28, and

"Full size"s of 79 &139. It's typically the case that the unviewable "Full

size" picture takes up much more space than the smaller pictures that we can

see. All that it takes to prevent this is to delete the "Full size" version

of any uploaded pictures. For the owner, a "Delete full size only" link is

available above the full size picture. Go ahead and upload at any size,

Yahoo will sort out what it needs, then delete the full size copy. If you

want more control over things, "Screen size" is a maximum of 400 pixels in

either dimension so you can do your own cropping and sizing before upload.

If you do it that way, there will not even be a large version to delete.

I certainly don't mean to discourage use of these eGroup features. Some

folks have pointed us to images on Webshots and other similar services and

some of us have websites where we can post pictures and other junk. That's a

fine way to share things if you already have such a setup or are comfortable

with that sort of thing. But the eGroup's photo section is there to be used

and it's easy to do that. It's also something that is more or less

guaranteed to be accessible by every member. But it's also easy to abuse and

I'd like to think that Pat & Jennifer can be spared the task of deciding

whether to throw out your wilted spinach or my beer.

While in Manitowoc be sure to see the Maritime Museum.

They just did a bunch of renovations. They have a ship

engine that you can make run (full size!), many

antique boats on display and of course the U.S.S.

Cobia (submarine) that you can tour.

In downtown Manitowoc there is a tavern/restaurant

called the Fat Seagull. They have great food and a fun

atmosphere with lots of local memorabilia. It is at

807 Quay Street. Try the Split-tail sandwich...

There is also the Rogers Street Fishing Village and

Museum. It is a small open air museum- but a fun stop.

Our family stopped at the Hamilton Woodtype and

Printing Museum. It has all the wood letters for

printing in all sorts of sizes, old printing presses

and a menagerie of other things. One of the stranger

museums I have been to- but fun.

I don't know about 'cool' for the older non-chain motels, as they often

get pretty bad after a few decades of use. As long as you are not

coming through on a Packer game weekend, there will be rooms in motels

in that general area. Most of the motels are south of Lambeau Field

near Oneida St and US 41. A new one just opened at Lombardi and Ashland

east of Lambeau, though, but I forget its name, it has a northwoods theme.

> (6) Same for a neighborhood saloon where the die hard cheeseheads

> hang out?

Any sports bar in the Green Bay area will do for that, there are several

good ones in the blocks around Lambeau Field. :-)

With the re-enovations, there is now a full-time sports bar, 'Curly's

Pub', INSIDE the stadium, too.

Also, check out the 'Titletown Brewery' in the former CNW station in

downtown Green Bay. Great food and beer. The former passenger platform

is open for trackside 'patio' style dining during warm weather and

you'll have CN freight trains going right past your table.

> (7) Are there any "must-see" or "must-stay" lodges/motels on the Lake

> Michigan coastline in WI?

I would check out Door County. Keep in mind that the Lake Michigan side

is less 'touristy' and more like old Door County than the Green Bay

side. Definitely do a fish boil while up there.

Beyond Door County, most of the cities along the shore have at least

some sort of lakefront resort hotel/motel, with little mom-and-pop

places scattered here and there in between. The quality ranges from the

very modest all the way up to the Ritz-Carleton in Chicago.

Oh yea, the recently completed PGA Championship was played on the

lakeshore between Manitowoc and Sheboygan and the Whistling Straits

course is open for 'daily fee' play (make reservations well in advance).

OTOH, Kohler's big resort 'The American Club' is located well away from

the shore in Kohler, WI.

Another IMHO 'must see' is the newly expanded Milwaukee Art Museum, the

Calatrava-designed addition is already a midwest landmark.

Well, folks, after some fits and starts and moves to another state,

Friends of the Mother Road's modest little celebrity autograph

auction finally is underway on eBay.

We had planned to make the requests for autographs much wider in

scope, except that a Mr. Paul Harvey gave us a check very early in

out 2003 fund-raising that pretty much covered our preservation

costs that year and then some. So the autograph hawking got put on

the back burner.

Anyway, here is a list of what's for sale

-- Al Unser autographed photo from an Indy 500 winner's circle shot

and an iron-on T-shirt transfer logo of his children's charity.

-- Buck Owens color autographed photo.

-- Robert DeNiro autographed photo.

-- Michelle Phillips autographed photo. (She's of the Mamas and the

Papas fame, and the photo ... yowsa!)

-- Jimmy Buffett engraved autograph photo (not a real autograph,

regrettably ... but at least his secretary didn't try to pull a fast

one)

-- R.E.M. autographed photo (current lineup)

-- Former Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller autographed photo

-- Clint Eastwood color autographed photo

-- Kris Kristofferson autographed CD and an autographed program from

his Texas Music Hall of Fame induction last year

All these folks have a link, however peripheral, to Route 66.

Shannon Miller, for instance, resides in the Route 66 town of

Edmond, Okla. R.E.M. once covered "Route 66." Clint Eastwood filmed

a couple movies on Route 66 and once shopped at Wrink's Market in

Lebanon, Mo. Al Unser is from Albuquerque. You get the idea.

Remember, all proceeds go to Friends of the Mother Road Inc., a 401

©3 nonprofit. To find more about us, surf to

www.friendsofthemotherroad.org

If you want to find these items, do a search called "for Route 66

charity." It won't list Kristofferson's items, however, because his

name is too darned long to fit that into the description line. Just

do a Kristofferson autographed CD, program" search, and you'll find

it. You also can find it by searching in my seller's

handle "rwarn17588"

Happy shopping, folks!

Blue Star Hwy. is the way up the lake. I take this drive every year after my

stay in Three Rivers. It hugs Lake Michign. I would advise staying in St. Joseph

instead of Benton Harbor. Silver beach located on the lake there is

beautiful. The small downtown area is restored with lots of shops and places to

eat. Easy on the street parking. Holland and South Haven also are on the lake

with beautiful motels. As you drive up the lake you will see many motels that

are well kept. This is a favorite part of my Michigan trip. There are many old

fashioned sites to visit in Holland and you can buy yourself a pair of wooden

shoes if so inclined. Now that you brought this up I am wondering if anyone in

the American Road group has done research on the old House Of David located in

Benton Harbor. I have lots of books, mementos, post cards and pictures that I

have taken over the years there. Would love to hear from anyone with info. I

visit here every year trying to collect and learn more facts about

it........Jane

I can answer a few of these, since I used to live near Wisconsin and

had a buddy who once lived near Manitowoc.

I dunno about must-see, but there's the Villa-Vista in Ludington.

If you're taking a car, it'll be about $50 for the car and about $45

for each passenger. But rates vary on the season. Here's a link:

I've heard good things about the Bay Motel on 1301 S. Military Ave.,

(920) 494-3441, near Lambeau. It's been there since 1958, runs from

$36 to $78 a night, and it has a restaurant on the premises. There

are other vintage motels in that area, but I haven't heard any

recent reports about them.

Fuzzy's is former Packers lineman Fuzzy Thurston's bar. There's also

the Stadium View and 1st & 10 around there. Kroll's also is a famous

bar/restaurant west of Lambeau that serves cheeseburgers with a

smidge of butter on them.

And you may already have this planned, but make sure you DO check

out the Packer Hall of Fame. It's a wonderful museum, and the pro

football fan I am, I had tears in my eyes watching a video clip of

Vince Lombardi give a speech.

From Benton Harbor north is MI 63 (Lake Shore/Blue

Star Highway) to South Haven - becomes MI 2. You will

have to get onto I-196 at Exit 41 - becomes I-196/U S

31. Continue north on I-196 to Business I-196 into

Holland - then U S 31 north.

Local area folks may have a way to miss the I-196

Drive the shore - stay off those Interstates - take M63 north out of

Benton Harbor

along the lake, it turns into Blue Star Highway later, continue thru

South Haven

(may be signed as County Rd 2 or Adams Rd.), stay to the left to continue

on

Lakeshore Dr. at the Y just noth of Glenn. At Douglas make a right on

Center St.,

and then a left to continue north back on County Rd. 2 - Blue Star

Highway. North

of Saugatuck the road turns northeast - you will cross I-196, then in

about 2 1/2

miles you will turn left at a Y to continure directly north on County Rd.

2 - Blue

Star Highway (or may be signed as 58th St.). Continue directly north -

cross

I-196 again, don't get on US 31 but continue north on Washington St (Bus.

I-196

and Bus.30) into downtown Holland, at 32nd St. bear to the right to

continue

following Bus. I-96 on Michigan Ave. Continue north on River Ave.,

don't take

the right to follow Bus I-96 on 8th St. Stay north then turn left onto

W. Lakewood

Blvd. It ends at Lakeshore Dr. - turn right and you're travelling north

along the shore

again. Continue north on Lakeshore Dr. - it turns into Sheldon Rd. in

Grand Haven.

In downtown Grand Haven turn right on Washington St., and then after a

few

blocks left on N. Beacon St. - US 31 to continue north. Follow the US 31

business

loop through Muskegon. Continue north on US. 31 and there's another

business

loop through Pentwater. At the T with US 10 turn left for downtown

Ludington.

Here's the link for the S. S. Badger car ferry:

http://www.ssbadger.com/defaultContent.asp

$49 for the car + $47 per person.

This is the water route for old US 10 which starts at the Detroit River -

Woodward Ave.

The ferry takes about 3 1/2 hours. Hope for good weather - there is a

swell and sometimes

some nasty wave action on Lake Michigan. Get a behind the ear

seasickness patch from

your Doctor.

Sounds like fun.

Howdy folks,

Just wanted to let you know that my touring photo exhibit "RETURN TO ROUTE

66:

Photographs from the Mother Road," will be in Kansas City, Missouri from

October 19 - December 7, 2003.

I will also be doing a talk there on Saturday, October 25th. (I'll be

nervous

enough so don't worry about making the talk ;) - No, it will be a nice slide

show of many Route 66 images, some in the show, some not.).

Here's the schedule for the next 15 months, hopefully, it will be in your

"hood." If not, please consider a lovely 2-lane roadtrip to get there...

Hehe.

Thanks and regards,

A small shield shaped Rt. 66 sign from the '50s

From the Quay County Sun:

Dean's Restaurant closes doors for last time

William Thompson

Earnest Dean Missildine and his wife Domie are getting out of the

restaurant business. Tucumcari's long-standing Dean's Restaurant will

serve its last meal today. The restaurant has been at the corner of

Route 66 and Mountain Road since 1978.

Domie Missildine, struggling with the emotions of closing her

business, nevertheless said it was a relief to be retiring.

"I have a lot of catching up to do at my house," she said. "I'll have

more time for my grandkids."

Her husband said he is grateful to all the customers who passed

through his doors. "We just want to thank the people of Tucumcari and

the surrounding area for their support and patronage over the years,"

he said. "We are going to sell the place and retire. I may come up

with another venture someday."

Bonnie Elliott once worked at Dean's and then became a regular

customer at the popular restaurant. "They have the best homemade egg

noodles," said Elliott. "I am on a salt-restricted diet, and the

cooks here were able to fix anything I wanted without a lot of salt,

and it still tasted good." Missildine mentioned the many truck

drivers who frequented his restaurant. "Word has gone up and down the

highway that we are closing," he said. "Truck drivers have been

coming in and shaking hands with me."

Everett Deane, a full-time truck driver, has been eating at Dean's

since the early 80's "I'll miss Dean's. That's all there is to it,"

he said. "The people here are really nice, and it always had a

comfortable atmosphere." Deane ate his last plate of huevos rancheros

inside Dean's Tuesday before heading out on a run to Iowa. "They make

the huevos rancheros here with just the right amount of pizazz," said

Deane. "The pizazz was always consistent."

The Missildine's son, Marty, was a part-time cook at the restaurant.

He said he was proud of the food served at Dean's. "There was a pride

factor with all the homemade food we put out," he said. "We served

what the customers asked for. Most places don't cater to personal

tastes."

A number of celebrities have stopped to eat at Dean's over the years.

The Missildines said they recall Western film stars Ben Johnson and

Dale Robertson dropping by. Also, Drew Carey, Tanya Tucker and a

member of the Oak Ridge Boys have eaten at Dean's. As of their last

week of operation, the Missildines employed around 15 people.

A message search shows there is some interest in bike riding in this

group. And, I'll bet there are some bikers like myself that love the

old retro, single speed pedal brake bikes, too.

After it was confirmed that my left knee cartilege is torn and my

street running days were over, I found an old favorite activity to

revive which allows me some good healthy exercise again without

worsening my left knee.

Have any of you folks tried bicycling as a regular exercise?

I prefer riding a single speed, pedal brake bike known today as

cruisers. Today's metal frame technology has made big improvements

over my old Huffy cruiser. Bikes today are lighter and stronger.

Here is one of my more energetic biking routes:

http://www.2wheeltech.com/biking/gmap.php

after you open the above page, click on Submit in the left menu, then

go to the Search Routes and look for one entitled: "Port to park and

back" then click on it.

You should see a bicycle route for Benicia Ca. that I sketched out

for this program

Kancamagus Highway between Conway and North Woodstock

is a beautiful drive - coming from the south take I-95

to Portsmouth, then Route 16 north to Conway.

In North Woodstock, just one attraction that's well

worth the stop is Clarks Trading Post -

Happy Traveling.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Mike, I think your sidebar explanation is right on. I believe that you and I

established some time ago that we're the premier trivia geeks around these

parts. You don't get that way unless you spend way too much time surfing the

net. Others probably enjoy it as much as we do, but they just don't want to

admit it. :-)

I want to thank all who made suggestions for my upcoming trip to Wisconsin

and Michigan, which begins tomorrow. After leaving the Dells, we will go

to Manitowoc to take the ferry to Ludington, Mi and travel north along the

lake to the UP of Michigan. Then west to Northern Wisconsin, over to

Duluth, MN and eventually back to Kansas City. I will send an update as we

progress on the trip and are able to get Internet access.

Looking at the other contest winners I feel like I'm in some lofty company (or

at least with some people who sit and stare at a computer all day).
