I was recently "lazy" and found a great deal in Tucumcari. The EconoLodge right

off of I-40, on what used to be 66, is exceptional. It was $39.99 a night, had

free wireless and was nicer than some Hiltons I've stayed in. The place was

spotless, the furniture nice, the bed comfortable, the staff friendly and the

interent fast. It's right down the road from Del's restaurant, which has been

there a long time, and has OK food, but nothing exceptional that I've found.

We stayed at the Wigwams in Holbrook, AZ and Rialto, CA and found both more than

satisfactory.

Yep, I think we stayed in the same motel. We use travel coupons. Can't remember

where we ate. Not too much internet in motels in 1998.

We recently stayed at La Posada in Winslow, Arizona. (Yes, the one of "standing

on a corner" fame.) It's an old Harvey House and is wonderful. The rooms were

great and the food in the Turquoise Room is great. It's not a diner - it's a

very upscale experience - but it's wonderful. If you're a train fan, you can

watch the 100 plus trains a day out the window of the restaurant.

They told us they're being written up in Travel and Leisure soon, so I doubt

I'll be able to afford them again. But, I certainly enjoyed it this go 'round.

The park, however, is still closed due to the 2004 fire.

There's also a Sinclair on 66 in Lebanon, MO, on the west end of town

where Business 44 gets back on I-44.

I believe (correct me if I am wrong) that they have donned the place up with

some 66 stuff...there is a station on that end of town that did that and I

recall green being the primary color...Tsingtao, Kip

If you'd like to see the Chicago icon Marshall Field's before it

rides off into the sunset and becomes Macy's-Chicago, you've got

until the end of December. Here's hoping Macy's will keep some of

the Field's traditions like the Walnut Room and that great clock

outside the building. Of course, there are the Frango Mints and the

Christmas windows and the huge tree in the Walnut Room. You hate to

see an icon like this place go.

So get out there and face the big crowds at the Christmas windows

one last time at Marshall Field's.

Probably the best way to visit Chicago on a weekend is the local

train system called the RTA. You can get a weekend pass for two

days for $5. Compare that to the horrendous parking ripoff prices

downtown and it becomes even a better deal.

Of course, you'll come into Union Station, an old and beautiful

structure worth visiting in its own right. You'll be impressed by

the huge waiting room. However, the direction signs around the

place are more than a little confusing.

I should mention that you'll be near the eastern terminus of Route

66 at Union Station. Just down the street to the west on Jackson is

that great place to eat called Lou Mitchell's which has been there

since the 20s. They serve breakfast and lunch so be there before 2

PM. Their food is outstanding and I especially like their coffee

and homemade toast and marmalade. You could make a meal out of this

alone.

You will almost always encounter a line there, it is that popular.

However, you'll be offered donut holes to pass the time and ladies

get Milk Duds (sorry guys, another example of sex descrimination).

Two other warnings about Chicago. The Loop has a 10% sales tax,

ouch!!! Plus, if you're driving the tollways to Chicago, you'll be

paying twice as much as natives unless you have an I-Pass.

Keep on Down that Two Lane Highway. RoadDog

Last June I traveled most of the way from El Paso Texas to Chicago on

US 54 - I stopped at Jefferson City and took the Interstate the rest

of the way - underestimated my travel time and had to take the

interstate the rst of the way in order to keep my arrival schedule.

Here in El Paso, we have heard about the importance of this roadway

for interstate commerce connecting Mexico to the Midwest so I decided

to take US 54 towards Chicago - I was heading for the Rotary

International Centennial Convention and a visit with my brother.

Because I had a limited amount of time to make the trip, most of the

time was spent driving and looking out the window and I did not take

any time to actually visit any of the areas that I passed through.

I would be interested in hearing any travel stories about the route

and any recommendations for places to stop and visit along the way.

Many thanks in advance!

I heard on local radio yesterday that Macy's claims they are keeping

most of the traditions at Marshall Field's. The name will not change

until next September. I agree that Macy's is making a big mistake in

removing the Field's name.

Those coming into Chicago to Union Station can use the free trolley

shuttles that stop at Adams just east of Canal Street to go to most of

the popular destinations, including the museums, Marshall Field's,

Navy Pier, north Michigan Avenue, etc. Union Station is an amazing

place--and is Chicago's last remaining passenger rail station that is

still used as a functioning terminal.

If anyone does decide to drive into the city, expect to pay up to

$20.00 for parking in the heart of the Loop. However, you can park in

the area around Union Station for less that half of that and take that

same free shuttle downtown. Some of the parking lots at Harrison and

Clinton are about $6 to $7, and are also near the Blue Line rapid

transit line, which costs $1.75 per trip.

Anyone who wants to contact me offline, I'll be happy to help give

travel info to anyone who needs to get around Chicago. And, in the

holiday spirit of shameless self-promotion, I will also conduct tours

of 66 in the Chicago area for a very reasonable fee. Give me a ring if

you would like a Windy City Winter 66 tour!

I'd say you got to be around Normal, Bloomington, Peoria, IL - Everything

seems to run thru that area - but doesn't 14 end in Chicago??

Sorry, I must have accidentally hit the send button, but to continue,

crossed US 14, US 52, US 24, US 136, and ends by US 150. What is the

road and what state is it in?

Hint, it also marks the western edge of some major urban

Hi John...

I've found that the original 66 is a near-contiguous stretch that separates from

"new 66" from Daggett all the way to Essex...there also appear to be some

earlier non-66 alignments NOTH that diverge from the 1926 routing. I'd love to

compare notes at some point.

adam

<<Hello Adam,

I, too, have been researching this. The early

alignment of the National Old Trails highway differs

greatly in some stretches to what became Route 66. And

not only in California. Many changes occurred after

the post-1926 numbering: one was the relocation of the

highway between Daggett and Lavic. I hope to develop a

paper on these early routings someday in the near

future, ha, ha. Let me know if anyone else out there

is doing the same. Happy Roading.>>

Speaking of "What State?"

Is anyone besides me (I'm 58) old enough to remember those map puzzles in the

Saturday Evening Post? For the younger folks, the SEP was a weekly magazine,

NOT a newspaper. It's best known as the venue for Norman Rockwell, whose art

decorated many covers of the magazine.

The map puzzles consisted of little circles lifted from road maps. There

would generally be one town name visible and maybe part of another. Plus some

numbered highways and maybe a river or something. You had to figure out what

state

it was in.

Those suckers were HARD.

47 sounds right to me...although its ending before US 150 looks

questionable...appears to end just outside Champaign at the intersection

with SR 10 but the maps I have dont number the route betweeen Mahomet (where

it intersects with US 150) and SR 10...this all takes place just West of

Champaign...the route otherwise foots the criterion and Chicagoland is only

a stones throw away! Tsingtao...Kip----- Original Message -----

You are starting the MISSOURI tour in Litchfield Illinois??? Hmm,

mighty suspicious--I think we are going to have to check your passports

and run you through Homeland Security screening!
