Melanie,

If you see this before you leave - yell real loud

when you pass the Kennebunk exit on the turnpike

(surely you can't be crazy enough to try and drive

route 1 between Kittery and Portland???). We live

about 200 yards or so east of the exit off Route 35

so maybe we'll hear you and yell back. LOL ROF

Safe trip.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

I do SCA events on weekends (Society for Creative Anachronism). I have

become a little more particular about which events I attend. As an SCA

merchant, sales are definitely down. I've retooled my inventory to bring in

more sales, but that only helps so much. People still attend SCA functions

(mostly the larger ones), but are spending less with the merchants.

I've rediscovered the joys of camping. I just blow up an air mattress

in back of the wife's Voyager, zip two bags together, and we can take

the dog, too! We find hotels that allow us to take pets, but it's

like jumping through hoops trying to meet their requirements. We did

manage to convince one clerk that our shepherd-husky mix weighed 50

pounds, as they had a weight limit. She really weighs about 80.

I wish we could take 2 cars so we could pack some gear, like folding

chairs, my cast iron pot and pan, a cooler full of good things to

eat, Jesse's toy collection (or at least one ball and one we can

fight over). We manage some, but it's a royal pain to set bedding up

with too much gear. Pitching a tent would be easier, and we're too

lazy for that!

I have..mainly due to paying for our wedding and back to school needs

for my 13 year old new step-daughter. We pretty much park our cars at

home on the weekend and just hang out there. Trying to pay off wedding

.. Fast food or a diner and Red Roof or Quality Inn is a

typical night on the road....lol. I have to admit that I'm

kind of lazy sometimes, whatever is within a mile of the

interstate are the businesses I patronize. Though I do

search out good local restaurants on occasion, and once in

a while a local motel.

Just hijacking this thread - I've read the book "Road Food" but my

experiences with some of the resturants listed seems that this book

lists more "novel" resturants, not necessarily "good" resturants. I

also have visited their Web site (same name) and there are

opportunities for individuals to add recommendations. I also remember

reading in William Least Heat Moon's book "Blue Highways" that he had a

working hypothesis - the greater the number of calendars behind the

diner counter, the better the diner's food.

Other than the well-established national resturant chains (all

the "Mackie D's for grown-ups), how do you separate the good from the

bad on the road?

Walter,

Understood about gas prices in the UK. I heard a commentator on the radio

yesterday cite some facts about good old supply and demand. He said that in

spite of escalating prices, Americans are actually driving more! Until the

demand changes, we can expect to keep paying more, unfortunately.

New Mexico: I was in Roswell last year with the lovely Shellee Graham and her

son, Trevor. The UFO museum there is actually quite an attraction. I think you

will enjoy it. Since you will be in that area, one suggestion I have is to make

your approach to Roswell through Fort Sumner and visit Billy the Kid's grave. In

addition to the grave site, there is a nice visitor center/museum.

Cheers,

Yup, DC...it's really hard to separate the good from the

bad on the road. I've eaten at poor diners and good ones.

If I found an awesome one, I'd definitely post it on this

group.

Anyone have any suggestions in West Virginia, Kentucky or

southern Indiana? I plan on travelling along the I-68 and

I-64 corridor next month. I would be willing to venture

fifty miles or so for a good meal.

I will have made 6 trips to the lower 48 by the end of this year. Cost of

gas just means I rent a smaller car. At home I always drive a Subaru for

the mileage anyway.

We just returned from a trip through Northern Idaho. Beautiful country with

great roads. I look for old run down businesses and houses when I travel.

Found plenty on a side trip up a canyon from Wallace to Burke, Idaho. Old

silver mining territory.

Not only do I look for old buildings to photograph, I also build models of

old structures. Some of my work can be see at my website:

Hey Matt...I've never had a meal here, but I hear Joe Huber's Family

Restaurant in Starlight, IN is worth a stop. The Hubers have a good

sized winery, orchard, restaurant, and now a petting zoo. It's about

20 miles northwest of Louisville, so it's not far off I-64. The drive

to it is along a nice twisty two laner through some of southern

Indiana's finest scenery. Be sure to stop at their farm market for

some apples & the winery for a nightcap down the road. :-)

Hello Walter & Group!

I don't know if this little tid bit of info about a place that I had visited a

few years back would of any interest for you folks!

It's the VLA Radio Telescope in New Mexico. It's just off of Hwy 60 about 60 mi.

west of Socorro NM.

Here's the site adress. www.vla.nrao.edu/

This was a neat place to visit!

For those crossing New Mexico in the direction of Tucson - if you

have the time of course - try this:

From Las Cruces, take I10 to Deming and head north on US 180 to

Silver City - a nice short stop is the City of Rocks State Park.

Nearby Silver City is the Gila Cliff Dwellings from the Anazazi at

the Gila Wilderness Area.

The drive north takes you along the Mogollon Rim and into Edgar,

Arizona - follow the signs for US 60 West or Highway 260. Either one

takes you to a great mountain resort area - Show Low, Arizona and the

Fort Apache Indian Reservation.

Before continuing west again on US 60 - load your camera - the ride

across the Salt River Gorge is spectacular. Every turn out is worth a

stop.

The ride to the bottom of the gorge is full of mountain switch backs

and lots of Oooh's and Aaah's but is only half the journey - after

crossing the Salt River at the bottom, you climb all the way back to

the top with a lot more Oooh's and Aaah's along the way.

US 60 leads to Globe, Arizona where you can pick up Highway 77 south

to Tucson or continue on US 60 to Phoenix and take the Interstate

south to Tucson.

This trip covers a lot of scenery - desert - mountains - cactus

fields - scrub pine forests - vistas that cannot be appreciated

properly in the pages of a travel magazine - these need to be

experienced and put on video or slides and enlarged on a living room

wall while you try to explain to watching chair bound explorers the

majesty of what they are seeing.

Hope you have the time to see it all - I made the trip in 4 days from

El Paso, Texas with an overnight in Silver City and Show Low and

Tucson - mostly driving - I had been to the City of Rocks and the

Gila Cliff dwellings on previous day trips.

Enjoy!

I agree whole heartedly on this trip. On our cross country trip in 98 we took

that exact route.

Try it, you'll like it. Attached ias a pic post card of Silver City.

Darryl,

Some very cool buildings on your web site. I also love your waterfall

effects. I am trying to learn how to do these dioramas for my slot cars too.

Thanks for sharing.

Enjoy!

I can't speak for the NM portion of this drive but I can second the

"spectacular" rating on Salt River Canyon. A couple of years back, before I

had even met him, thelandrunner answered a request for suggestions with a

route out of Phoenix, through Globe, the canyon, and Show Low. After that

trip, I'd follow him anywhere.

My "journal" from that day, with a few pictures of the canyon, is here:

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.
